Notes: Alif Lam Mim- Shaikh Faisal

Tafseer Surah Baqarah: (“Alif Lam Mim”)
by Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(morning dars 4.03.11)
Surah Baqarah
1. Alif-Lam-Mim [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]

30 different interpretations!
Ibn Kathir says no one can understand what “alif-lam-mim” means except Allah
-- Only Allah knows the meaning. It is haram for you to base you aqeedah on dann (suspicion). And suspicion never replace the truth. The prophet refused to explain it
So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding (3:7)

--Crazy Shia distort the verses to attribute knowledge of unseen to their imams
--Shias aim is to attack character of Sahabahs, Prophet (saws) and Allah (tala)!
--They are a Jewish conspiracy
I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (5:3)
The leader of the Iranian revolution, Khomeini writes: 'Every prophet came to establish justice on Earth. His aim was also to establish justice but he was not successful. The same is the position of the Seal of the Prophets who came to reform human society and establish justice but failed during his lifetime.' (Ittihad wa-yak-jihati:15)
“Allah often lies and does mistakes” [Usool-al-Kafi, page 328, Yacoob Kulayni, Vol. 1]

We ask Allah for guidance every day and that guidance is to be found in the Qur’an
--Best Tafsir of "Alif Lam Mim" is the tafsir of Ibn Kathir and he refused to give an explanation of it. We hear and we obey, don’t ask questions
--Mutazillites try to explain it because they are rationalist and want to have an answer to everything (they worship the aql-their own intellect)
--They say that there are no mansooqh- abrogated verses. This is their defense agains kufaar who say Quran is no longer applicable
--Quran has abrogated/abrogating verses
(eg. Allah first said: don’t come to salat drunk, later Allah said: no drinking period)
--Qur’an was revealed according to circumstances
-Surahs revealed in Makkah are short and focus on Tawheed
-Surahs revealed in Madina are longer and focus on Shariah

--To be successful in implementing Sharia, we have to teach people Tawheed first. After giving them Tawheed, they’ll accept Islam and then they will implement Sharia on their own
--> sharia4uk, sharia4usa = these use the wrong approach for dawah
--When Rasul(saw) sent Muad ibn Jabal to Yemen, he said call the people to Tawheed
And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder. (23:71)
Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad ) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. (33:21)
--You need to follow the example of Muhammad(saw)
--> Correct approach= tawheed4uk, tawheed4usa

Compilation of the Qur’an:
--Qur’an was compiled during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr following the great losses at the Battle of Yamaama (on the outskirts of Riyadh today)
--Qur’an was compiled into one dialect during the Caliphate of Uthman--> compiled the Qur’an in the Qureishi dialect (Qur’an was revealed in 7 dialects) but compiled into one dialect in order to avoid confusion/fitnah

Surah Baqarah
2. This is the Book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].

Taqwa- to place between yourself and the wrath of Allah a barrier by doing what is fard and abstaining from that which is haraam

Things you are not allowed to doubt:
1. Not allowed to doubt its completion
Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur'ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). (15:9)
--If you doubt one word of the Qur’an, you’re a kaafir
Shia say: The main compilers of Qur'an interpreted changed corrupted and perverted the Holy Qur'an. (Al-Ehtijaj, Page No. 257)

2. Not allowed to doubt in its accuracy

3. Not allowed to doubt the hikmah / purpose of the Quran
--What destroyed the people before you was their excessive questioning
--We hear and we obey
--If you don’t have answers/don’t understand, you stll have to obey
(eg. Why is pork haram? Because it gives you the characteristics of pig (ie. lack of ghayrah) Why is gold haram for men? wearing it takes away from poor people except for women because it is natural for her to adorn herself. But you cannot have men wearing it in order to avoid zakat/show off/imitate a woman besides you’re supposed to focus on akhira)
"And our duty is only to convey plainly (the Message)." (36:17)
Rasul(saw) said: “Whatever I forbid you, abstain from it and whatever I command you to do, do what you are able to there from; for, those before you destroyed not but for their incessant questions for their Prophets and their disagreement with them.” [Bukhari, Muslim]
--Surrendering to Qur’an and Sunnah is a condition of your Shahadah
--We’re not permitted to have one foot in Islam and one for in Jahiliyyah
--Excessive questioning done only by those who are looking to apostate
O you who believe! Enter perfectly in Islam (by obeying all the rules and regulations of the Islamic religion) and follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan). Verily! He is to you a plain enemy (2:208)
But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission (4:65)
--A man asked Rasul(saw) a question and he wasn’t happy. So he went to Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr asked, did you ask Rasul(saw)?. The man said “yes” so Abu Bakr drove the man away. So went to Umar. Umar asked, did you ask Rasul(saw)?. The man said “yes” so Umar chopped off his head and no one thought he was over-reacting
It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error. (33:36)

4. Not allowed to doubt on the justice of the Qur’an
Cut off (from the wrist joint) the (right) hand of the thief, male or female, as a recompense for that which they committed, a punishment by way of example from Allah. And Allah is All Powerful, All Wise. (5:38)

5. Not permitted to doubt the source of the Qur’an
--All the words came from Allah.
--If you doubt the source, you become a kaafir
