Notes: Importance of Zakat/Salat - Shaikh Faisal

Surah Baqarah: (Importance of Salat/Zakat)
by Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(morning dars 4.09.11)

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Quran, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad SAW). And verily, they had been before in manifest error (62:2)

Surah Baqarah
1. Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].
2. This is the Book (the Qur'ân), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqûn [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]
3. Who believe in the Ghaib and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and spend out of what we have provided for them [i.e. give Zakat , spend on themselves, their parents, their children, their wives, etc., and also give charity to the poor and also in Allah's Cause - Jihad, etc.]

Al Ghaib (the unseen)
--Allah is al ghaib.  Allah ‘tala will expose His face to the inhabitants of Paradise
--Prophets&messengers are al ghaib
--Human soul is al ghaib
--Punishment of the grave is al ghaib (you are not allowed to doubt the punishment of grave)
The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you. Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die). Nay! You shall come to know! Again, Nay! You shall come to know! Nay! If you knew with a sure knowledge (the end result of piling up, you would not have occupied yourselves in worldly things), Verily, You shall see the blazing Fire (Hell)! And again, you shall see it with certainty of sight! Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)! (102:8)
--The hardest thing Allah (swt) is asking you to believe in is the hell-fire. Why?
1) Because whenever a man rejects Muhammad (saws) he will be in hellfire
2) Every time your skin melts out, our skin will be replaced to be burnt again
Surely! Those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) We shall burn them in Fire. As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment. Truly, Allah is Ever Most Powerful, All-Wise (4:56)
3) It is not difficult to believe in Allah.  Before the Battle of Badr, Abu Jahl made dua t Allah so the Arabs believed in Allah (swt) but they had issues to believe in hereafter/resurrection
--Only the Muslim has the proper understanding of his creator
-haraam for Allah to indulge in human actions
-haraam for Him (swt) to lie
    -haraam for him to oppress
You [true believers in Islâmic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah (legal ways, etc.)] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden), and you believe in Allâh. And had the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) believed, it would have been better for them; among them are some who have faith, but most of them are Al-Fâsiqûn (disobedient to Allâh - and rebellious against Allâh's Command). (3:110)

Importance of Salat
--The scholars differ whether or not praying takes you outside the fold of Islam:
--If you don’t, we chop of your head but bury you in Muslim graveyard (Imams Shafi/ Maliki)
--If you don’t pray, we chop of your head and not bury you in Muslim graveyard, but bury you in the graveyard of the kuffar (Imam Hanbali)
--If they don’t pray, don’t chop off the head, just bury them with Christians not Muslims (Imam Hanifa)
--Ibn Taymiyyah: One who abandons the salat, that person is a kaafir
But if they repent, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for a people who know. (9:11)
--This verse was sent down after the Sahabahs asked “what if their shahadah is fake?”
3 conditions to be accepted into Islam:
1) Belief in al-ghaib (the unseen)>>> Allah‘tala/Akhira
2) Salat
3) Zakat
The difference between a kaafir and a Muslim is Salat [Sahih Muslim: Kitab ul Iman: Book.1, Number.147]
--The first thing Allah (swt) will look at on the Day of Judgment is salat
--If your salat is not intact, Allah (swt) will not look at your other deeds
--No intercession will be accepted for a person who does not pray
In Gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another,About Al-Mujrimun (polytheists, criminals, disbelievers, etc.), (And they will say to them): "What has caused you to enter Hell?" They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers). "Nor we used to feed Al-Miskin (the poor); "And we used to talk falsehood (all that which Allah hated) with vain talkers "And we used to belie the Day of Recompense. "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them (74:40-48)

Importance of Zakat
--We’re commanded to cooperate with each other for the sake of birr, righteousness and taqwa
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment. (5:2)
Birr = virtue
--Do not cooperate with each other in sin and transgression
--Abu Jahl refused to take shahadah because he didn’t want to pay zakat
--You’re not permitted to pay zakat to heretics, people with dodgy aqeedah (Shia, extreme Sufis, those who believe that dismantling Shariah is minor kufr, ie. MADkhalis)
And when it is said to them: "Spend of that with which Allâh has provided you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe: "Shall we feed those whom, if Allâh willed, He (Himself) would have fed? You are only in a plain error." (36:47)

Question: How much should I pay in zakat?
Zakat is 2.5% of your yearly savings
--One of the signs of last day is people struggle to spend in path of Allah (swt)
--The stronger your eeman (faith), the easier it is to spend in path of Allah (swt)
--The weaker your eeman, the more difficult it is to spend in the path of Allah (swt)

Question: What about sadaqa? Can we pay sadaqa to the heretical people?
No! It’s is haraam to pay your zakat to the people who call the mujahideen, ‘terrorist’
No! You can't pay your zakat to people who preach ‘democracy ‘
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilâh (God) is One Ilâh (God i.e. Allâh). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord." (18:110)

Question: Who do we pay zakat to?
Allah ‘tala told you who are the people who are entitled for zakat:
As-Sadaqât (here it means Zakât) are only for the Fuqarâ'[] (poor), and Al-Masâkin[] (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islâm); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allâh's Cause (i.e. for Mujâhidûn - those fighting in the holy wars) (9:60)
--Majority of people are poor/ only a minority are rich
--The best people are the mujahideen and the Uleman (scholars) who support them
--Hizb ut Tahrir says we shouldn’t pay zakat, as we don't have Caliphate, this is a weak argument and they are in error
--Fesabilillah in the ayat (9:60) means to support the mujahideen

O you who believe! Verily, there are many of the (Jewish) rabbis and the (Christian) monks who devour the wealth of mankind in falsehood, and hinder (them) from the Way of Allâh (i.e. Allâh's Religion of Islâmic Monotheism). And those who hoard up gold and silver [Al-Kanz: the money, the Zakât of which has not been paid], and spend it not in the Way of Allâh, -announce unto them a painful torment. (9:34)
--Nisaab means the amount that is zakatable (the minimum amount you need for it to become mandatory for you to give zakat
(in UK, it’s 1000 pounds, but if you have 1000 pounds of debt + you have 1000 pounds in bank, then you don't have to pay zakat)
--It’s compulsory for you to pay zakat on your gold and silver
--If you refuse to pay zakat, Allah ‘tala will hold up the rain
--And in the Hereafter, your wealth will come as snakes to bite you
"Whoever is made wealthy by Allaah and does not pay zakah of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous snake with two poisonous glands. It will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, "I am your wealth, I am your treasure" [Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 24, Number 486]

The 3 times Islam survived:
1) The day of Badr
2) When Abu Bakr fought the Murtaddoon who refused to pay zakat
3) When Imam Ahmed stood against the Mu’tazila to defend the claim Qur’an is Allah’s word

Question: What if a Muslim doesn’t have savings but they are still extravagant in spending?
ANSWER: Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaitan (Devil - Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (17:27)
