Importance of Zakat- Shaikh Faisal

Tafseer Surah Baqarah: (Importance of Zakat)
By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(morning dars 4.15.11)

Surah Baqarah
1. Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].
2. This is the Book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].
3. Who believe in the Ghaib and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and spend out of what we have provided for them [i.e. give Zakat , spend on themselves, their parents, their children, their wives, etc., and also give charity to the poor and also in Allah's Cause - Jihad, etc.].

Taqwa is to place between yourself and the wrath of Allah sat a barrier by abstaining from doing that which is haraam and doing that which is fard

Road to Taqwa:
1. keep up your prayers
Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do. (29:45)

2. make constant dhikr (remembrance of ALLAH)
And he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We assign unto him a devil who becometh his comrade; (43:36) And whosoever turns away blindly from the remembrance of the Most Gracious (Allâh) (i.e. this Qur'ân and worship of Allâh), We appoint for him Shaitân (Satan devil) to be a Qarîn (a intimate companion) to him. (43:36)
"Who whispers in the breasts of mankind,"Of jinns and men." (114:5-6)
--It is haraam for you to marry mad people or people who hear voices (weak in deen)

3. be in company of righteous people
O ye who believe! Be careful of your duty to Allah, and be with the truthful. (9 : 119)
Alas for me! Ah, would that I had never taken such an one for friend! (25:28)
--be in the company of the sincere muslims.  Rasul(saw) said you will be on the religion of your friends so choose carefully
--Masses are asses.  Do not follow the crowd , ALLAH tells us the majority of the people are Fasiqoon.
--We do not follow the majority; we go with the Quran and Sunnah

4. go to masjid on Friday where the Khutbuh touches your heart
--Its not fard upon women to go to masjid for jummat
--Abstain from masjid of the Shiites, Sufis and Barlevis

5. have a weekly study circle
--You need to learn the different sciences of the deen: Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, Hadith, and Tafseer.  The greatest subject of these is Aqeedah
--You are allowed to learn fiqh from Mu’tazila or Asharia but not Aqeedah
--You are only allowed to learn Aqeedah from Ahlus Sunnah wal jammah
***Abu Hanifa Said the greatest fiqh is to learn your creed (Aqeedah).  Tou cant pick it up as you go along.  If you do this, you will not pick up the correct creed.  You need to single out and learn your creed.

6. need to do research about your deen
--when Allah wants good for you, he gives you proper understanding of the deen

Surah Baqarah

The ppl of taqwa believe in Al-ghaib (the unseen)
--the most difficult thing to believe in is the hellfire and the punishment is everlasting

The ppl of taqwa establish their 5 daily prayers
--You can postpone some prayer if you are busy
--IF you are a traveler you can join/shorten prayers  (Hanafi do not allow you to join prayers bu the Rasul joined his)
--You can join asr/dhur and maghrib/isha
llah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you (2:185)
We have not sent down the Qur'an unto you (O Muhammad) to cause you distress,  But only as a Reminder to those who fear (Allah). (20:2-3)
--You can pray sitting in car/train/plane if traveling as Rasul used to pray on camel
--if you are sick, you can pray in a chair at the masjid
--AAccording to ibn hanbal, of you don’t pray you are a kaafir (if you abandon salat in its totality but if you miss 1 or 2, you are not a kaafir)
But if they repent, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for a people who know. (9:11)

The ppl of taqwa establish give in zakat
--2.5% of your yearly savings
And those who hoard up gold and silver [Al-Kanz: the money, the Zakat of which has not been paid], and spend it not in the Way of Allah, -announce unto them a painful torment. (9:34)
--this relates to zakat that has not been saved.
--If you store your wealth in silver or gold, you need to pay zakat on it
--if u have sheep/goats/cows, you need to pay zakat on it
--if you are a farmer, you need to pay zakat when you harvest your crop
And it is He Who produces gardens trellised and untrellised, and date-palms, and crops of different shape and taste (its fruits and its seeds) and olives, and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in taste). Eat of their fruit when they ripen, but pay the due thereof (its Zakat, according to Allah's Orders 1/10th or 1/20th) on the day of its harvest, and waste not by extravagance . Verily, He likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance), (6:141)
Trellised=maintained (eg. crops)

--some people are entitled to zakat but some are not:
As-Sadaqat (here it means Zakat) are only for the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars), but it's haraam to give to these: 1. can't give it to shiites, barelvis, sufiis and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise (9:60)
--Don’t give to deviants otherwise you are supporting their aqeedah
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment. (5:2)
--give to the fakir and miskeen (poor and needy)
--the people who collect zakat are entitled to have salary from the zakat (some people use this as an excuse to escape paying the zakat, don’t look for excuses)
--You can give zakat to kaafirs who are inclined towards Islam to soften their hearts so they may accept the faith
(eg. Umar cancelled the zakat given to the kuffar because Islam was strong and giving them is not compulsory. No one criticized him for this, Similarly Umar decided to accept into the army those who apostated/reverted to Islam during caliphate of Abu Bakr although AbuBakr would not allow them to fight.  This was the correct decision as they did not betray Islam)
--Rasul(saw) said if there would be a prophet after me, it would be Umar
--give zakat to free the captives or those in debt
--give zakat for Allah’s cause (Dawah and Jihad)
Fesabilillah=jihad on the battlefield (ALL 4 Imams held this belief)

--One of the signs of the last day is Zakat will be seen as burden and not as a pillar of Islam
--The only way to wage war against poverty is thru zakat (don’t make takfeer on prostitutes, make takfeer on apostate regimes who don’t implement the Sharia or set up a welfare/zakat system)
--When people withhold the zakat, Allah will with-hold the rain.  Why shud Alah show mercy to you when yiu have no mercy for His creation
“A people do not keep from giving the zakat on their wealth except that they will be kept from having rain from the sky. If it were not for the animals, it would not rain at all". [Ibn Maajah, according to al-Albaani it is sahih, see Silsilat al-Hadeeth as-Saheehah, vol.1, no.106]

Surah Baqarah
4. And who believe in (the Qur'an and the Sunnah) which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muhammad Peace be upon him ) and in [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] which were sent down before you and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell, etc.).

We believe in the Quran and the original Torah/Injeel
--Allah promised to protect the Quran, Allah only made such a promise for thee Quran because it is the final revelation and abrogates all previous texts so such a promise of protection was not needed for texts that were later abbrogated
Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, "This is from Allah," to purchase with it a little price! Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for that they earn thereby. (2:79)
Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur'an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) (15:9)
Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise (Allah ) (41:42)
Baatil = falsehood
--Proof from bible that the Torah is corrupted: "How can you say, 'We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord, when actually the LYING PEN OF THE SCRIBES has handled it falsely?” Jeremiah 8:8
