Notes: The Virtue of Sabr- Shaikh Faisal

Tafseer Surah Baqarah: (The Virtue of Sabr)
Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(morning dars 5.02.11)

We don’t want to pre-empt the Mujahideen, all we can say is “Inna lillahi inna illaihi rajioon” - “from Allah we come and to Allah we return”
The biggest blow to Islam was the death of the Rasul, yet Islam survived; the Egyptian Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Persian Empire were conquered, many many territories.  People should not be disappointed by the death of people because Islam does not depend on the birth or death of any person.  This deen is the religion of Allah and Allah has promised it a brilliant future.
So if anyone asks you about the news, you should answer: “We pray Allah(swt) rewards him according to what he did in the dunya”

Surah Baqarah
36. Then the Shaitan (Satan) made them slip therefrom (the Paradise), and got them out from that in which they were. We said: "Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time."
37. Then Adam received from his Lord Words. And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful.

We will be Enemies to Each Other
--the shaitan caused Adam and Eve to slip from felicity so they were flung from heaven and told: "go and live on earth because you'll find a place there for a time" but "you will become enemies to each other"
Why you will become enemies of each other?
--when you are on earth you will be enemies to each other because you are competing over the same natural resources (food, clothing and shelter) and chasing the same things: same jobs, resources, women, promotion, etc
--when you are chasing the same things, you become competitors
--on earth, you must fend for yourself (food, clothing and shelter)
--in heaven, it's all provided for you, but on earth, those are taken back
We verily have created man in an atmosphere: (90:4)
--life will not be a bed of roses because we were made to struggle and toil
--some people can't cope w/ life on earth so they practice ESCAPSIM
--these people take drugs (weed, hallucinogens)
--the drugs remove them from reality to a world of fantasy
--they think drugs are for coping but they’re only "escapism"
--these people have no sabr or tenacity
--they want to numb the pain they feel
--some people live on anti-depressants or sleeping pills
--they sleep their life away with
--Prozac and such - they hope the drugs help but they don't work
--they can make you become suicidal
--the drug companies laugh all the way to the bank!
They fight not against you even together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Their enmity among themselves is very great. You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided, that is because they are a people who understand not. (59:14)
--you become enemies to each other [see 2:36]
--you think the kuffar are united but they are divided (they're competitors)
--they only unite against the haqq
--they unite against Islam
--they will bury their differences to join against haqq
--THE BATTLE OF THE DITCH .... they were united

Surah Baqarah
38. We said: "Get down all of you from this place (the Paradise), then whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.

The Law of Fear
--if you follow guidance, you don't suffer anxiety and fear
--if you fear Allah tala - then He will cause others to fear you
--when you fear Allah, He will put fear in the hearts of the kuffar for you
--if you don't fear Him or if you abandon your deen, the kuffar will have no fear in their hearts
--when two armies come face to face, if yu are equal to your enemies in sins, the one with better weapons will win the war

Surah Baqarah
39. But those who disbelieve and belie Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) such are the dwellers of the Fire, they shall abide therein forever.
40. O Children of Israel! Remember My Favour which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill (your obligations to) My Covenant (with you) so that I fulfill (My Obligations to) your covenant (with Me), and fear none but Me.
41. And believe in what I have sent down (this Qur'an), confirming that which is with you, [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], and be not the first to disbelieve therein, and buy not with My Verses [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] a small price (i.e. getting a small gain by selling My Verses), and fear Me and Me Alone” (Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. I, Page 253).
42. And mix not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth [i.e. Muhammad Peace be upon him is Allah's Messenger and his qualities are written in your Scriptures, the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] while you know (the truth) .

The Problem of the Jews/Christians
--but if you disbelieve, you will abide in Hellfire forever
--the only religion to Allah acceptable to Allah is Islam
--the Covenant that Allah took from Bani Israel is that they shud be alive and Muhammad(saw) comes then they will be the first to believe in him and support him and that they shud worship none except Allah
--and believe what has been sent down in this Quran because it confirms what came in the Torah so do not be the first to reject faith in it
--don't sell my revelation for a paltry price

--do not mix the truth with falsehood or hide the truth
--the kuffar are masters of mixing truth w/ falsehood
--whenever they show documentaries on all the religions, they put Islam in the middle of all the other religions
--they highlight the good points of all the religions so it APPEARS they are saying the same thing
--they also hide the truth – the Jews used to hide the description of Muhammad description out of fear their ppl  would embrace Islam
--the truth Allah is referring to is the description of Muhammad(saws)

Surah Baqarah
43. And perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, and Irka' (i.e. bow down or submit yourselves with obedience to Allah) along with Ar-Raki'un.

Salah/Zakah/Sawm have been enjoined upon us so we can attain Taqwa
--salah and zakah and saum were prescribed for those who came before you
--this brings you taqwah
And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion. (98:5)
--they were asked to be sincere to Allah and single out Allah for our worship and to net set up rivals to him
--every previos nation was sent a messenger telling the to worship Allah alone and reject faith in taghoot (false deities)
--Salat and Zakat was prescribed for them and the salat was the same for the prophets before Muhammad
--this is why when Rasul(saw) went on Isra wal Miraj, the Prophet led the other prophets in prayer in Masjid al Aqsa
and verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah)." Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth). (16:36)
O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2). (2:183)
--Jihad was prescribed to those before us: the difference is now we're permitted to take the booty
So when (the messengers with the present) came to Sulaiman (Solomon), he said: "Will you help me in wealth? What Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay, you rejoice in your gift!"[Then Sulaiman (Solomon) said to the chief of her messengers who brought the present]: "Go back to them. We verily shall come to them with hosts that they cannot resist, and we shall drive them out from there in disgrace, and they will be abased." (27:36-37)
--Rasul(saw) said: “i was sent with the sword from now until the day of Judgment. And my livelihood was placed underneath the blade of my sword.  And disgrace and humiliation was placed on the shoulders of all those who go against my deen, my mater-which is Isla, and he who imitates a ppl, becomes is one of them”
narrates by Ibn Omar: "the Prophet said: "I was sent by the sword proceeding the judgment day and my livelihood is in the shadow of my spear and humiliation and submission are on those who disobey me" [Musnad Imam Ahmed (vol. 2, p. 50)]

Surah Baqarah
44. Enjoin you Al-Birr (piety and righteousness and each and every act of obedience to Allah) on the people and you forget (to practice it) yourselves, while you recite the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]! Have you then no sense?

Practice what you Preach
--you can't preach against something you yourselves are doing, practice wat you preach
--not all kaafirs hearts are sealed
--if every heart was sealed, Islam wouldn't be the fastest religion in the world
Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearings, (i.e. they are closed from accepting Allah's Guidance), and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment. (2:7)
--we must establish evidence against the pagans (give them hujjah thru dawah)
--until then they will not become munfaqeenah (to abandon kufr)
--he went to give 1000 shahadahs
--he gave 450 because Kenyan gov't threw a ‘spanner in the spokes’ and stopped the dawah
--they said their donors told them to take Shaikh into custody
He it is Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad ) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islamic Monotheism) to make it victorious over all (other) religions even though the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammed ) hate (it). (61:9)

Surah Baqarah
45. And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi'un [i.e. the true believers in Allah - those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell, etc.)].

seek help in Patience and Prayer
--seek help in patience and prayer, but this is difficult except those who keep a lowly spirit / submissive and who fear Allah's punishment(hellfire) and- believe in His promise (paradise )
--without sabr, you can't reach anywhere spiritually
--Prophet Noah, Yusuf, Ayub - they suffered for the deen so you too will not have it easy, you have to have sabr
--some worship on the edge w/ a condition: “I will remain a Muslim if my life is prosperity, but if adversity comes, I'll leave Islam”
--when good comes, you're content; when calamity comes, you turn back and apostate from the deen and lose the dunya and the Hereafter
And among mankind is he who worships Allah as it were, upon the very edge (i.e. in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss. (22:11)
--Rasul(saw) said: “the believer's affairs are wonderful, when good comes to him he is grateful and that is good for him and when a calamity befalls him, he has sabr (patience) and that is good for him”
“How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all of it is good, and that applies to no one except the believer. If something good happens to him he gives thanks, and that is good for him, and if something bad befalls him he bears it with patience, and that is good for him.” [Narrated by Muslim, 2999]
--if you're not impatient, everytime a calamity befalls you will insult Allah
--if you aren't you will apostate from your deen and insult Allah tala
--whatever happens to you in your life it is Qadr (Allah's divine will).  Whenever a calamity befalls you, it was not meant to pass you by and whenever a calamity passes you by, it was not meant to befalls you, the pen is lifted and the pages are dry
--there is nothing in Qur'an or sunnah that says you should be pleased with qadr but you must be patient w/ it
"No slave of Allah will truly believe until he believes in al-Qadr its good and evil, and until he realizes that what has befallen him was not going tomiss him and that which missed him was not going to befall him." [Sahih at-Tirmidhi and it was authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani]
-- you're not a kaafir if you do suicide, they will be in Hellfire for some time, not forever.  All Muslims come out of the Hellfire after a time
The Prophet said, "He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." [Volume 2, Book 23, Number 446, Bukhari]
--Only the Khawarijj believe we're condemned forever
--seek help in patience and prayer and keep a lowly spirit
--impatient people go back and forth in islam
--Allah gives people light to cross the sirat according to how they treated Him in dunya
--Those who went backward/forward, He(swt) gives/takes the light
--but if you're sincere, He gives you permanent light
--the way you treat allah tala in the dunya, he treats you in the hereafter
--only with sabr will you be able to go to paradise
--Allah told Jibreel to look at Paradise; he said no one who hears of it will fail to enter it, but then He showed the hurdles (drugs, women, sin, etc), Jibreel was then afraid no one could enter Paradise
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: When Allah created Paradise, He said to Gabriel: Go and look at it. He went and looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might, no one who hears of it will fail to enter it. He then surrounded it with disagreeable things, and said: Go and look at it, Gabriel. He went and looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might, I am afraid that no one will enter it. When Allah created Hell, He said: Go and look at it,Gabriel. He went and looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might, no one who hears of it will enter it. He then surrounded it with desirable things and said: Go and look at it, Gabriel. He went, looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might and power, I am afraid that no one will remain who does not enter it.  Sunan abu dawud,40/4726.
--so you have to have sabr, its not easy
--if something is haraam and you abstain - this is sabr
--and if allah has enjoined on you, you do it – this is also sabr
(eg. waking up for Fajr, fasting in Ramadan, going to jihad, wearing hijab, and making hajj)
--we do the difficult things to get Allah's blessing
"The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj Mabrur." [Volume 2, Book 26, Number 595 Bukhari]
