Notes: Requirements of Jihad - Shaikh Faisal

The Requirements of Jihad
Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(evening dars 5.10.11)

The 13 Requirements of Jihad
1. Eeman
2. Maturity
3. Sanity
4. Sound body
5. Leadership
6. Training
7. Transportation
8. Money
9. Weaponry
10. Obedience to the Amir
11. Pure intentions
12. Unity
13. Sabr

1. Eeman
--it’s not a condition for the kaafirs to go and fight Jihad
--if they live in your country, they pay jizzah;
--you can’t force them to go to Jihad, but you can invite them
--Umar (ra) paid Christians to fight with the Muslims
5:27 - But recite unto them with truth the tale of the two sons of Adam, how they offered each a sacrifice, and it was accepted from the one of them and it was not accepted from the other. (The one) said: I will surely kill thee. (The other) answered: Allah accepteth only from those who ward off (evil).
--they went to the battlefield and they alongside the Muslims
--they didn't betray the Muslims, at the battle of Qadisiyya
And (O Muhammad ) recite to them (the Jews) the story of the two sons of Adam [Habil (Abel) and Qabil (Cain)] in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to Allah), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: "I will surely kill you. " The former said: "Verily, Allah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)" 5:27
Allah only accept the pious deeds of Al Muttaqun
Eeman is the first requirement of Jihad
The Prophet (saws) said, “Follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs”
--Umar was one of the rightly guided Caliphs
--you can use the kuffar to kill kuffar, but you cant use kuffar to kill Muslims
--what bin Baz did was haraam (you can't use kuffar to kill Muslims) - he did it in Iraq

CONDITIONS FOR USING KUFFAR ON THE BATTLEFIELD
1. Kaafir has to be a sympathizer to Islam
2. has to be a foot soldier not a general in a decision-making position
3. has to be monitored and controlled
When Abu Bakr was a Caliph, some Muslims apostated from Islam
--they think since the Prophet s.a.w. died, Islam became weak and so they apostated
--who told you that Islam become s death by the death of someone?
--if you die Islam, will go on; we don’t care who you are!
--Islam belongs to Allah and Allah swt will protect his deen
--great victories happened after the Rasool (saws) died
When the Rasul s.a.w. died one of the greatest victories took place:
--the army of Musaylimah got defeated
--some of the apostates returned back to Islam, but Abu Bakr didn't trust them
--he didn’t take them to the battlefield, but Umar (ra) took them to the battlefield
--none of them betrayed Umar (ra)
--they fought with zeal and enthusiasm, just like the other Muslims
--Umar (ra) took them back because some were naive and followed the crowd
--but Umar (ra) overlooked this and took them back
2:197 - The pilgrimage is (in) the well-known months, and whoever is minded to perform the pilgrimage therein (let him remember that) there is (to be) no lewdness nor abuse nor angry conversation on the pilgrimage. And whatsoever good ye do Allah knoweth it. So make provision for yourselves (Hereafter); for the best provision is to ward off evil. Therefore keep your duty unto Me, O men of understanding.
--any journey you go on, you need taqwa;
--if you’re going to get married, you need taqwa;
--if you’re going to seek Islamic knowledge, you need taqwa
The best of provision to take with you is Taqwa

2. Maturity
--15 years is the age for jihad
--but you can take someone younger than this
--Muhammad (saws) was sending one boy who was 15 and a younger boy said, “send me”
but the Rasool (saws) said he wasn’t old enough and the boy said, “but I can fight and win
the older boy”
--so the Rasool (saws) gave him the opportunity to show his strength;
--he beat the older boy and so Muhammad (saws) sent both boys into battle fro jihad
--a boy can be 12 yr old because he can be an expert at making IED(explosive device)
--it’s at the hands of the Ijtihad of the Imam

3. Sanity
--a mad man can’t go to hajj (it’s not accepted_
--you can’t marry a man who hears voices in his head
The actions are Innama (only, certainty) tied to the intentions and every person will earn that which he intended. [Related by Saheeh al-Bukhari, and Muslim]
Intentions:
--you have to make intentions for every single salah you pray
--you need to make intentions for every single Ibaadah; you have to say your intention –
--outloud for hajj
--when you fast in Ramadan you have to make intentions to fast
--you need to make intentions before the athan of Fajr;
--if you don’t, than you have no fast for that day

4. Sound body
Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame, etc.), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home). 4:90
Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward; 4:95
We use this ayah to flush the statement jihad of intention is the greatest
This Hadith that Jihad of Nafs is the greatest is fabricated:
"The best type of jihaad is the jihaad of the one who strives against his own self
(jihaad al-nafs) for the sake of Allaah."
No blame or sin is there upon the blind, nor is there blame or sin upon the lame, nor is there blame or sin upon the sick (that they go not forth to war). And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), He will admit him to Gardens beneath which rivers flow (Paradise); and whosoever turns back, He will punish him with a painful torment. 48:17
--with permission of Amir, a wheelchair-bound permission can do jihad

5. Leadership
A good leader has 7 traits:
1. brave
2. pious
3. has ilm (knowledge)
4. wisdom
5. humility
6. mild-tempered
7. a just leader (not oppressive)
A panel of scholars will choose the leader

6. Training
--the knowledge of Jihad is fard ayn
--you have to go for Jihad training when you reach the age of 15
Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly. 8:60
You may not know that they’re your enemies, but Allah knows because
--Allah knows what they conceal

7. Transportation

8. Money
The Prophet said. "Listen and obey (your chief) even if an Ethiopian whose head is like a raisin were made your chief." Bukhari Volume 1. Book 11. Number 662
You need transportation for Jihad, how will you go to the battlefield?
Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts, and when you said: "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, while their eyes overflowing with tears of grief that they could not find anything to spend (for Jihad) 9:92
Why they went back with their eyes full of tears?
--because they were not munafiqh; they were true Muslims
--the MADkhalis call the mujahideen "terrorists"
--jihad is kutiba = prescribed for you
--another reason why they went back with their eyes full with tears
--is because jihad is compulsory for you just like fasting is in Ramadan
O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)
2:183
kutiba = used for fasting and jihad
Jihad (holy fighting in Allah's Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know. 2:216

9. Weaponry
And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery, etc.) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly. 8:60
We have the aql that can take out the kuffar's ships
--if you, the Muslims, make rockets that can hit their ships and take them out,
--can you imagine how terrified they will be!
Hadith: your strength is in your fire-power
The Prophet s.a.w. said "Your strength is in your firepower"
Turhiboona means “to strike terror” not “to threaten”
--they give some dodgy translation to please the kuffar

10. Obey the Amir
O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger (SAW), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination. 4:59
You should obey the Amir; this is a requirement for Jihad
--busybodies have no place in the battlefield
--fitnah people have no place I the battlefield
--they will turn people against the amir
The Prophet s.a.w. said "Anyone who fights to make La ilaha illah Allah the highest, then he is a Mujahid"

11. Purify your intentions
--to purify your intention is a requirement for Jihad
--you can’t go to jihad with asabiyya
--our intention should only be for la ilaha il Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Allah
--only the deeds of the sincere are accepted
O you who believe! Make not unlawful the Taiyibat (all that is good as regards foods, things, deeds, beliefs, persons, etc.) which Allah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily, Allah does not like the transgressors. 5:87

12. Unity
Allah doth accept of the sacrifice of those who are righteous. 5:27
--Allah only accept the deeds of the righteous
--2 sons of Adam were talking and he said, Your sacrifice wasn't accepted because you didn't
have pure intentions”
--you need to purify your intention for your deeds to be accepted
--Allah only accepts the deeds of the righteous
--if you go to the battlefield and your intentions aren't for the sake of Allah swt,
--then it’s as if you committed suicide
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). 8:46
Ibn Abbas said "Disunity is a great evil"
--many times, Umar (ra) did things that Ibn Abbas (ra) did not agree with but
--he kept quiet to keep unity among themselves
--murjifeen (cause disunity on the battlefield)
If they had come out with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) disorder, hurrying to and fro in your midst and sowing sedition among you, and there would have been some among you who would have listened to them. But Allah knoweth well those who do wrong. 9:47
You’re not allowed to take the fitnah makers to the battlefield with you
A man came to the Prophet and asked, "A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them fights in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet said, "He who fights that Allah's Word (i.e. Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause." Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 65
--they are not called hypocrites; they are called simple-minded Muslims
--eg. a mad man in the UK by the name of Abu Isa claimed to be the Caliph and
--that all the Muslims in the world must give them there bayah
You can’t take the fitnah makers to the battlefield, because they will spread fitnah and
--cause people to rebel against the Amir

13. Sabr
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.) 8:46
You should be patient while you are on the battlefield; Allah is with the patient
THE REALITIES OF THE BATTLEFIELD IS VERY HARSH
You must have sabr so that you stay on the battlefield and don’t run away
There are 7 major sins
-Shirk
-Magic
-Murder
-Ribaa
-Robbing an orphan
-Slandering a Muslim woman
-Running away from battle
Stay away from the seven destroyers." They said: O Messenger of Allah and what are they? He said: "Associating with Allah in worship, sorcery, the taking of a life which Allah has sanctified except rightfully, consuming interest, consuming the property of an orphan, fleeing on the day of intense battle and slandering innocent, unknowing, believing women." Muslim & Bukhari

Whoever does not do them will have no such guarantee; if He wills, He will punish him and if He wills, He will grant him admittance to Paradise.” (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1531; Maalik, al-Muwatta’, 248; Ahmad, 21690)."
