We are about to embark on a totally new subject:
a)abrogating verses
b)those which are abrogated

This topic is a source of controversy in the ummah:
so please listen attentively:

Allah ‘tala uses stages to abrogate verses

Ali, the caliph saw a man giving a speech in the masjid, he asked him, "Do you know those verses that were abrogated?" the man said, “No” so Ali told him to leave that masjid and not return, as he was destroyed and seeking to destroy others *

Al Baqarah 2:106 - Such of our revelation as We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but we bring (in place) one better or the like thereof. Knowest thou not that Allah is Able to do all things? (106)

-- there are scholars who claim that no abrogation took place
-- they claim that abrogation didn’t take place
-- as Allah is not indecisive.
-- they say that if you believe in abrogation
-- you are saying that Islam has weaknesses.
-- abrogation took place in Quran and also Sunnah

1. VISITING GRAVEYARDS by WOMEN:
-- in the early stages of Islam,
-- the prophet forbade the Muslims from visiting graveyards.
-- then the prophet told them now
-- you may visit the graveyards because they remind you of death

‘I used to prevent you from visiting the graves…[now] visit them, for verily it reminds you of the hereafter.’ Tirmidhi

-- when you debate with Shia,
-- they say that some parts of the Quran have been forgotten
-- they use 2:106 - we refute them with the same ayah
-- that Allah has willed that the verse was forgotten,
-- then He gave a verse which is better
-- so we are not at a disadvantage
-- you are allowed to visit the graves : but not women.

Thabit narrated that the Prophet (saws) cursed women who visit grave-yards often" [Sunan Ibn Majah:1574] MUSLIM agrees

-- reason women are not allowed to visit the graves:
-- they will not behave properly, they will wail and cry loudly
-- Aisha’s brother died, she visited his grave.
-- why did she visit the grave of her brother?
-- because, the prophet said Allah curses the women
-- who visit the graves OFTEN ( as a habit )
-- if you visit the grave as a one off:
-- you didn’t do anything wrong

"Allah has cursed women who visit graves," is understood. As for if they visit for contemplation, compassion, and seeking baraka by visiting the graves of the righteous, then it is not wrong if they are elderly. It is disliked if they are young [f: and there is fear of fitnah from their attending....] (Ibn Abidin, Minhat al-Khaliq Hashiyat al-Bahr al-Ra'iq, 2:210)

-- another abrogation that took place in Hadith (sunnah):
-- in early stages if a couple had sex,
-- but didn’t ejaculate, they didn’t have to make ghusl
-- then later on, even when the two parts met
-- without ejaculation - ghusl became compulsory

Allah's Messenger (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said that, "If one of you sits between her legs (of a woman) and penetrates her, Ghusl (bath) is obligatory." (Bukhari and Muslim) "Even if he does not ejaculate." (Muslim)

-- we have heard evidences from Hadith in regards to abrogation
-- what about evidences from the Quran
-- we have heard evidences from Hadith in regards to abrogation
-- what about evidences from the Quran

O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say, nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (except when traveling on the road), until after washing your whole body if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again. (Nisa 4:43)

-- many Sahabahs died whilst drinking

O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say (Nisa:43)

-- when the Sahabahs heard this ayah,
-- they were still drinking
-- they drank after Isha. and were sober by fajr
-- Hamza the prophets uncle drank a lot
-- there is a verse that abrogated this verse:

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination? of Satan's handiwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. (Al-Maida 5:90)

The people in whose heart is a disease
-- they continued to drink, even until today; they quote:

O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,(Nisa 4:43)

-- we say to them, you are quoting an ayah which came down
-- in the early stages of Islam
-- and it is abrogated.
-- Allah said : Do not come near to alcohol:
-- much less to actually drink it. : Avoid it strictly

2. YOU GO YOUR WAY and I’LL GO MY WAY Al Kafiroon 109:6

"To you be your religion, and to me my religion (109:6)

And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone (Al-Anfal 8:39)

-- this ayah has also been abrogated: with : Al Anfal 8:39

"To you be your religion, and to me my religion (Al-Kaafiroon 109:6)
--came down when they didn’t have an army, this was in the Makkan stage

Sahih Muslim (1:33) The Messenger of Allah said: "I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah..."

-- people who drink alcohol, we have news for you:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar; “Whosoever drinks, alcohol even though he does not get intoxicated, as long as he has a drop of wine in his stomach and in his veins, his salah will not be accepted. If he dies while he is in that situation, he dies as an infidel. The salah of that who drinks alcohol and get intoxicated is not accepted for forty days and if he dies in that situation, he dies as an infidel.” (Nasai)

The salah of that who drinks alcohol and get intoxicated is not accepted for forty days and if he dies in that situation, he dies as an infidel.” (Nasai)

-- even though your salah is not accepted you still have to pray.

3. PUNISHMENT FOR COMMITTING ZINA An-Nisa 4:15

And those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse, take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them (i.e. women) to houses until death comes to them or Allah ordains for them some (other) way. (An-Nisa 4:15)

-- another ayah which has been abrogated
-- In the early stages of Islam, a girl who committed zina
-- was put under house arrest
-- in the early stages this was the punishment:
-- then this law was abrogated
-- by Surah Noor 24:2

The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment (Al-Noor 24:2)

In the early stages of Islam, there was no flogging,

-- then Allah opened a way for them
-- the new punishment of flogging
-- and being sent to another city for one year

The Prophet (saws) said, "No doubt I will judge between you according to Allah's Laws. The slave-girl and the sheep are to go back to you, and your son will get a hundred lashes and one year exile." He then addressed somebody (Hadrat Unais (r.a.)

-- those are some of the examples of the abrogated verses
-- you are not allowed to say Allah is indecisive
-- it is called "stages in legislation"
-- Allah knew the people were addicted to alcohol
-- He swt knew they were also weak
-- but when Allah knew the people became stronger in Islam (eeman)
-- He (swt) told them Not to come near it ( alcohol )

Whenever Allah's Apostle ordered the Muslims to do something, he used to order them deeds which were easy for them to do, Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 19

The Arabs were coming from a background of shirk : so the prophet feared they would worship the graves : he forbade them from visiting : then when the Muslims became strong in tawheed, he allowed them (as there was no longer fear of shirk)

Know you not that it is Allah to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? And besides Allah you have neither any Wali (protector or guardian) nor any helper (2:107)

For verily, it was only the excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets that destroyed [the nations] who were before you” (Agreed Upon) Hadith No. 9 from 40 Hadith

-- sometimes Allah didn’t mention some particular thing
-- but the Sahabah would ask the prophet about these things

Al-Baqarah 2:108 - Or would ye question your messenger as Moses was questioned aforetime? He who chooseth disbelief instead of faith, verily he hath gone astray from a plain road. (108)

Islamic etiquettes of asking questions :

A You are not allowed to ask a question when the answer will be given to you will cause you pain

O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. (Al-Ma'idah 5:101)

B When you ask a question: it should be with sincerity to seek knowledge

And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: "The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allâh knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property). And if Allâh had wished, He could have put you into difficulties. Al-Baqarah 2:220

Truly, Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise." (Al-Baqarah 2:220)

-- they were God-fearing and they didn't want to mistreat the orphans

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill treated. I and the guardian of the orphan will be in the Garden like that," indicating his two fingers. [Bukhari]

Stay away from the seven destroyers." They said: O Messenger of Allah and what are they? He said: "Associating with Allah in worship, sorcery, the taking of a life which Allah has sanctified except rightfully, consuming interest, consuming the property of an orphan, fleeing on the day of intense battle and slandering innocent, unknowing, believing women." Muslim & Bukhari

They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Al-Baqarah 2:222

Then they asked the prophet about menstruating women: they migrated from Makkah, and now they saw the Jews how they treated their women while menstruating: So Allah revealed Al Baqarah 2:222

-- And when they have purified themselves
-- means ‘when they make ghusl’
-- when a woman finishes her menstruation
-- she must make ghusl,
-- if you have sex before she has made ghusl
-- you have committed haraam
-- the "modernist" says; "I use durex (condoms)
-- so we can have s-x while my wife is menstruating".
-- they will tell you that they must change Islam
-- to accommodate modern times (audhubillah)

And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not (right) for you that you should annoy Allâh's Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily! With Allâh that shall be an enormity. (Al-Ahzab 33:53)

C You are not allowed to ask a question to make yourself familiar with the opposite gender

-- you cannot ask questions with "ulterior motives

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said : The messenger of Allah said Part of someone's being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him. Hadith Nawawi No. 12

D It is haraam to ask inquisitive questions

-- people ask questions, like.. how much do you earn. was your wife a virgin*
-- excessive questioning is not allowed, you will only make a burden on yourselves
-- the Jews asked Allah: about the cow: what kind of cow,
--what color cow, they then became a burden on themselves

The Prophet saws said that Allah will not ever let him enter Paradise who cares little who shares his wife's privacy.

Al-Mumtahina 60:10 abrogated this practice: O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them, Allah knows best as to their Faith, then if you ascertain that they are true believers, send them not back to the disbelievers, they are not lawful (wives) for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them (60:10)
