-68- Prophet Suleiman and the Ant

Tafseer Surah An-Naml: Prophet Suleiman and the Ant
By Shaikh Faisal

(morning dars: 6.8.11)
(embellishing previous dars)

And indeed We gave knowledge to Dawûd (David) and Sulaimân (Solomon), and they both said "All the praises and thanks are to Allâh, Who has preferred us above many of His believing slaves!" (SURAH AL-NAML 2715)

David and Suleiman received knowledge from Allah tala

--when He (swt) loves you, he gives you understanding on the deen
--Ibn Josiah said what the prophets leave behind was knowledge
--when you have knowledge, you became a slave of Allah 'tala

Ibn al Qayim al Jawiyya said when you have knowledge it makes you become a slave to the wealth

--what is better to have knowledge or wealth the scholars choose knowledge
--because it's the legacy of the prophets
--wealth protects you but you become a slave to that wealth
--when you have knowledge it makes you fear Allah and protects you
--when you have wealth you spend all your time protecting the wealth
---when you have knowledge you become a slave of Allah and when you have wealth
--you become a slave of the wealth

Wealth makes you paranoid

--Muslims w/ knowledge sakina = peace of mind
--they don’t need shrinks, but these people have fake friends
--knowledge gives you real friends

3 Homosexuals who made AIDS famous, Pharaoh and others had wealth but no knowledge

A Munafiqh will never have 2 qualities knowledge of Islam and a beautiful character

-- Allah only gives the barakah of Islam, to those who he loves
--those who do not know are not equal to those who do know
--because of this David and Suleiman knew they were preferred above the other servants

Say "Are those who know equal to those who know not?" It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allâh's Signs and Verses). (SURAH AZ-ZUMAR 399)

“The scholars are the inheritors of the prophets.” [Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Ibn Maja, Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, and others] This Hadith highlights the esteem in which religious scholars are held by Allah, His angels and His other creatures. If “salat” is mentioned with reference to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), it denotes “Allah's Grace with Mercy;” if it is mentioned with reference to the angels, it denotes “praying for forgiveness;” and if it is mentioned with reference to other creatures - men, animals, etc., - then it means “prayer and supplication”. Thus, Allah graces that person with His Mercy who teaches people beneficial knowledge, also. This Hadith highlights the esteem in which religious scholars are held by Allah, His angels and His other creatures. If “salat” is mentioned with reference to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), it denotes “Allah's Grace with Mercy;” And Sulaimân inherited (the knowledge of) Dawûd. He said "O mankind! We have been taught the language of birds, and on us have been bestowed all things. This, verily, is an evident grace (from Allâh)." (SURAH AL-NAML 2716)

If it is mentioned with reference to the angels, it denotes “praying for forgiveness;” and if it is mentioned with reference to other creatures - men, animals, etc., - then it means “prayer and supplication” Thus, Allah graces that person with His Mercy who teaches people beneficial knowledge, also (i.e., the knowledge of Islam); angels pray to Allah to forgive his sins; and other creatures pray for his well-being Umama reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “Allah AND His angels AND the people of the heavens AND the earth, EVEN the ants in their rocks AND the fish, PRAY for blessings on those who teach people good." [at-Tirmidhi] (Aisha Bewley, Riyad as-Salihin (The Meadows of the Righteous), Book of Knowledge, 241. Chapter the excellence of knowledge;

Fatima was asking for her share of Muhammad's fadak he left behind

--she was told he left behind his knowledge

And Sulaimân inherited (the knowledge of) Dawûd. He said "O mankind! We have been taught the language of birds, and on us have been bestowed all things. This, verily, is an evident grace (from Allâh)." (SURAH AL-NAML 2716)

--the truth is David was poor and Suleiman was rich so he inherited
--dunya was not inherited by instead --knowledge, ilm and hikmah

Allah commanded us to sacrifice a cow and the Shiites said the cow was literally,
Aisha! The is the shady tafseer of the Shiites

And (remember) when Mûsa (Moses) said to his people "Verily, Allâh commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allâh's Refuge from being among Al-Jâhilûn (the ignorants or the foolish)." (SURAH AL-BAQARA 267)

--if a Shiites are in the chain of transmitters, the a Hadith is called onto question
--Suleiman inherited from David (the knowledge of David, according to the translators)

The greatest knowledge is knowledge of Quran and Sunnah

Verily, the Prophets did not bequeath deenars or dirhams. All they left behind was knowledge, so whoever takes it, has indeed acquired a huge fortune. [Al-Musnad, 5/196] Also related by Aboo Daawood, 3/317; at-Tirmidhi 5/49; Ibn Maajah 1/81, ad-Daarimee, 1/98 and ibn Hibbaan, 1/152 (al-Ihsaan)

When someone slanders you, they must give you all their good deeds on the Day of Judgments

Hasan al Basaree heard a man slandered his name
--but he had knowledge, so he sent the man a gift
--the slanderer asked 'why are you sending me fruit?'
--as a thank you gift for all the man's good deeds al Basaree on Judgment Day

WHEN SOMEONE CAN'T ATTACK YOUR TRUTHS ~ THEY WILL SLANDER YOUR NAME AND ATTACK YOUR CHARACTER

"If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you, for I fear Allâh; the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exists)." (SURAH AL-MAEDA 528)

Hasan al-Basri, (ra) who was told that a certain individual was speaking against him behind his back. The following day, al-Hasan al-Basri sent that individual a basket of fruit saying that he was recently informed that the individual had given him some of his good deeds, so he sent him this fruit as a token of his gratitude. The 2 sons of Adam, Cain and Abel, were fighting Abel says I will never lift my hand to strike you because if you kill me you'll be taking away all my sins And there were gathered before Sulaimân his hosts of jinn and men, and birds, and they all were set in battle order (marching forward). (SURAH AL-NAML 2717)

Suleiman inherited knowledge and hikmah

Prophet Suleiman (as) loved horses so much, he forgot to pray salatul ‘Asr because he played with them and he took an oath that he will never play with them anymore + that’s why Allah replaced the horses with an army of Jinns [Abu Dawud]

--all his jinns, animals and birds were arranged in order
--there were no horses there
--why not?

Prophet Suleiman (as) loved horses so much, he forgot to pray salatul ‘Asr because he played with them and he took an oath that he will never play with them anymore + that’s why Allah replaced the horses with an army of Jinns [Abu Dawud]

--because he forgot his prayers while playing w/the horses
--horses are used to repair or destroy nations

“If there was [such thing as] bad omens in anything, they would have been in houses, spouses and horses.” [al-Bukhari, al-Sahih and Muslim, al-Sahih]

By the (steeds) that run, with panting. Striking sparks of fire (by their hooves), And scouring to the raid at dawn. And raise the dust in clouds the while, Penetrating forthwith as one into the midst (of the foe). Verily, man (disbeliever) is ungrateful to his Lord; (SURAH AL-ADIYAT 1001-6)

So Suleiman arranged his birds, jinn, and animals, as any good general does

And there were gathered before Sulaimân (Solomon) his hosts of jinn and men, and birds, and they all were set in battle order (marching forward). SURAH AL-NAML 2717

Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said "O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulaimân (Solomon) and his hosts should crush you, while they perceive not." (SURAH AL-NAML 2718)

The ant and Suleiman

LESSONS

1) Animals are able to recognize people
2) the ant was a female ant
3) Animals have mercy and compassion because the ant cried out to save the other ants
4) Animals are Muslims and good ones are concerned about other Muslims

Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth glorifies Allâh. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (SURAH AS-SAFF 611)

The Messenger of Allah (saw) also said, "The believers, in their love, mutual kindness, and close ties, are like one body; when any part complains, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever." [Muslim]

"None of you will truly believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself". (narrated by Bukhari)

So he [Sulaimân] smiled, amused at her speech and said "My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favours which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by Your Mercy among Your righteous slaves." (SURAH AL-NAML 2719)

Suleiman was smiled and was impressed w/ the brotherhood and sisterhood

--he smiled [tabassum] when he saw this
--he smiled because he understood the animals' languages
--he said, “I want to be thankful to you, bless me and my parents”
--Bless my father, David (even in the grave)
--Allow me to use the barakah you gave me for righteous good deeds
--Allah tala to put him among righteous people

Recapping
1. Bless me to be grateful
2. Bless my parents, as well, even David in the grave
3. Bless me to use barakah for righteous good deeds
4. Admit me among the righteous people

Kaafirs in their 'hay-day'

Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delights[] (you indulged in, in this world)! (SURAH AT-TAKATUHR 1028)

The kaafirs of Quraish

--this is their time in jahiliyya
--many of their friends said DON'T EMBRACE ISLAM
--Abu Talib was there and he should have taken Shahadah but Abu Jahl said
--DON'T EMBRACE ISLAM
--worst thing is for you to have evil friends
--you will come and cry out - see Surah 2528 - I wish I didn't so and so for my friend

"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a Khalil (an intimate friend)! (SURAH Al-FURQAN 2528)

As Suleiman approached the ant, the ant cried out "run to your holes, take cover"
--which Muslims are crying out to save our own ummah, as the ant did ?

He inspected the birds, and said "What is the matter that I see not the hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees? (SURAH AL-NAML 2720)

Suleiman had to be the Commander in Chief
--so he was inspecting his birds, animals and jinns for their battle

And (remember) when you (Muhammad SAW) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle (of Uhud). And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (SURAH IMRAN 3121)

--but he didn't see the bird there and he was going to demand a very good reason from him
--why he wasn't punctual

“I will surely punish him with a severe torment, or slaughter him, unless he brings me a clear reason." (SURAH AL-NAML 2721)

He inspected the birds, and said "What is the matter that I see not the hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees? (SURAH AL-NAML 2720)

The absentee has no deputy
--He thought of slaughtering the bird because he doesn't like anyone leaving the battlefield
--"I'll punish him severely"

"I will surely punish him with a severe torment, or slaughter him, unless he brings me a clear reason." (SURAH AL-NAML 2721)

--Suleiman took punctuality very seriously
--the ummah today are fired daily because they are not punctual

And he sought among the birds and said How is it that I see not the hoopoe, or is he among the absent? (20) I verily will punish him with hard punishment or I verily will slay him, or he verily shall bring me a plain excuse. (21) -Surah an Naml

I called on Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari and said to him, "Relate to me what you have heard from Allah's Apostle ." He said, "I accompanied him on one of the journeys." (Abu Aql said, "I do not know whether that journey was for the purpose of Jihad or 'Umra.") "When we were returning," Abir continued, "the Prophet said, 'Whoever wants to return earlier to his family, should hurry up.' We set off and I was on a black red tainted camel having no defect, and the people were behind me. While I was in that state the camel stopped suddenly (because of exhaustion). On that the Prophet said to me, 'O Jabir, wait!' Then he hit it once with his lash and it started moving on a fast pace. He then said, 'Will you sell the camel?' I replied in the affirmative when we reached Medina, and the Prophet went to the Mosque along with his companions. I, too, went to him after tying the camel on the pavement at the Mosque gate. Then I said to him, 'This is your camel.' He came out and started examining the camel and saying, 'The camel is ours.' Then the Prophet sent some Awaq (i.e. an amount) of gold saying, 'Give it to Jabir.' Then he asked, 'Have you taken the full price (of the camel)?' I replied in the affirmative. He said, 'Both the price and the camel are for you.' '' Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 113

Suleiman made a public announcement to his troops
--about what he'll do to the bird so they realize
--they can't come later, either

LESSONS

The Commander in Chief needs to be serious / gravitas
The Commander in Chief needs to be decisive

But the hoopoe stayed not long, he (came up and) said "I have grasped (the knowledge of a thing) which you have not grasped and I have come to you from Saba' (Sheba) with true news. (SURAH AL-NAML 2722)

LESSONS

--The news the bird brought
--don't underestimate the birds
--the bird's news he brought back from Yemen
--he went to Sheba / Saba and brought back news from there
--so prophets don't know everything because the bird knew what Suleiman didn't know

Say (O Muhammad SAW) "I possess no power over benefit or hurt to myself except as Allâh wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe." (SURAH AL-ARAF 7188
)

--"I am bringing you is the haqq because I don't tell lies"
--the bird used the word yaqeen (certainty)

"I found a woman ruling over them", she has been given all things that could be possessed by any ruler of the earth, and she has a great throne. (SURAH AL-NAML 2723)

"I found a woman ruling over them", she has been given all things that could be possessed by any ruler of the earth, and she has a great throne. (SURAH AL-NAML 2723)

The bird told Suleiman about the queen, Bilqis

--she was the commander / possessive of a great many people
--Islam is here to take you away from the servitude of the creation
--Your liberation is in monotheism
--Your captivity is in polytheism
--Islam takes you away from the now-ness of the dunya to the vastness of the Hereafter
--People of Sheba were not male chauvinists they allowed a woman to rule
--she was given everything (ie a leader might need to rule)
--she he went into the palace to look around
--he wanted to bring back the news
--he mentioned the great throne

One day Omar gathered his Governors & Muawaiya was dressed all fancy & Omar disliked it & Muawaiya said the People of Syria will not accept me without this, Omar kept quiet.

So all Governors aim to impress.

How did we find out that the Bird went inside to look around?

Coz the Bird said... the Queen had a Mighty Throne...
--how the bird could know if she didn’t see it.
--the bird was a proper messenger coz she brought news of Haqq!

[As Shaitân has barred them from Allâh's Way] so they do not worship (prostrate themselves before) Allâh, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you reveal. (25) Allâh, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne! (SURAH AL-NAML 2724-25)

LESSONS

-- what lesson do we learn from this ayah every single animal in the world knows
--that Allah deserves to be worshipped
-- Animals are aware about the web of the Satan
--shaytaan lead them away from the path
--animals are aware that its the shaytaan that misguides them to worship other than Allah
--they despise the human for this
--in France a dog ate half the woman’s face
--it puzzled the animal psychologists on the news channels..
--they do not have the knowledge to explain this
--the bird complained to Suleiman that a woman ( and her people ) worshipped the sun
--instead of Allah and the bird was so clever that he told Suleiman
--that it was the shaytaan that caused their evil deeds to look fair-seeming to them
--the animals are aware of the web of shaytaan
--the bird continues to speak

Allâh, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne! (SURAH AL-NAML 2725)

-- even tho the woman in Yemen had a great throne, Allah is the Lord of the Supreme Throne
-- Suleiman listened attentively to the bird, and did not interrupt the bird
--the prophets have the best character
-- you cannot compete with the prophets were good character is concerned

And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted (standard of) character. (SURAH AL-QALAM 684)

LESSONS
-- many times people speak to you - you do not allow them to finish this is bad character
-- Christians in debate, will be "dirty" in their debate, and not allow you to finish your sentence(point)
-- when the bird was speaking to Suleiman, he allowed the bird to finish his testimony
--about what he saw in Yemen

-- And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted (standard of) character. (SURAH AL-QALAM 684)

-- Suleiman took the battle to the kufaar himself
-- he was marching and he heard the speech of the ant

And (remember) when you (Muhammad SAW) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle (of Uhud). And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (SURAH IMRAN 3121)

--we use this ayah to debunk and checkmate the Shiites, who say that the wives of the Rasool are not of his household

[Sulaimân] said "We shall see whether you speak the truth or you are (one) of the liars. (SURAH AL-NAML 2727)

Suleiman didn't follow the testimony of1 individual

-- look at the character of Suleiman he didn’t follow the testimony,
--he said he would verify if the testimony is the truth

O you who believe! If a Fasiq (liar — evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done. (SURAH AL-HUJRAAT 496)

--the character of the Prophets is the same way - they verified everything
-- when a person hates you they will never verify the news about you
--if they hear something bad about you they will believe it
--do not allow your hared for a person cause you to be unjust
--people believe what they ant to believe

Selective amnesia
--enemies never verify what they hear
-- that is the reality of the world we live in people believe what they want to believe
--they forget what they want to forget (selective amnesia selective senility)

When they can't come for a debate, they attack your character

--they make up their own Hislam

Suleiman's character was beautiful
--he verified the people in Yemen worshipping the sun in Yemen

Shiites are an example of believing in what THEY WANT TO BELIEVE

-- if the Muslims verified the stories they hear, there wouldn’t be
--so much fitnah today people believe what they want to believe
--in a Shia debate, they were telling Shaikh not to quote Bukhari but 10 minutes later:
--THEY QUOTED FROM BUKHARI
--many from this room where there to witness this
