-69- Prophet Suleiman and Queen Bilqis

Prophet Suleiman and Queen Bilqis
by Shaikh Abdullah Faisal

(evening dars: 6.8.11)

--that Suleiman (as) was upset that one of the birds in his army was not punctual
--he didn't tolerate lateness or those who turn their back on jihad
--he planned a severe punishment unless the bird brought a good reason for being late
--this shows you that the prophets took their jihad very seriously

Allah defended the bird by saying he wasn't even really that late!

--can you imagine we're on a battlefield and you have the ammunition,
--but you came 2 hrs after the time you should be there
--5 minutes late is too much

Formula One race [on TV]
--when cars pull up to change their tires [make a pit stop] and get their petrol
--they are only in that pit stop for the maximum of 8-12 seconds (to change tires and add petrol)!!
--each second is very important

Abu Huraira reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: The son of Adam abuses Dahr (the time), whereas I am Dahr since in My hand are the day and the night. Sahih Muslim, Book 27 Number 5580

Allah dislikes that man is abusing time because HE is time

The bird and his news:
--the bird went to Sheba / Saba and brought back news from there
--"I am bringing you is the haqq because I don't tell lies"
--the bird used the word yaqeen (certainty)
--the bird brought knowledge that even Suleiman didn’t know
--because the prophets didn’t know everything:

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe." (Al-A'raf 7:188)

"I found a woman ruling over them", she has been given all things that could be possessed by any ruler of the earth, and she has a great throne. (SURAH AL-NAML 27:23)

The bird told Suleiman about the queen, Bilqis
--she was the commander of a great many people
--she was given everything needed by a ruler and has a wonderful Arsh
--so the bird went into the palace so he went IN to the palace to bring back important information
--he wanted to be a proper messenger
--the info the bird brought back was yaqeen (certainty)
--he inspected the Arsh with his two eyes

"I found her and her people worshipping the sun instead of Allah, and Shaitan (Satan) has made their deeds fair-seeming to them, and has barred them from (Allah's) Way, so they have no guidance," (An-Naml 27:24)

When Umar was caliph, he gathered all his governors but when Muawaiya came, he had on these fancy clothes; Muawaiya said he was ruling over Assyria and the people would not respect him if he dressed beneath them: Umar kept quiet.

A good leader listens to his men.

The bird in Yemen:

--he was appalled by what he saw (he shocked)
--how can people worship the sun instead of Allah tala?
--so animals know about tawheed and are Muslims
--animals are Muslims and good Muslims are concerned about other Muslims

Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth glorifies Allâh. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (SURAH AS-SAFF 611)

--animals are aware of the web of the Satan
--so [the bird] said that the shaitan made the people worship the sun instead of Allah tala

So that they may worship (prostrate before) Allah, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you reveal. (An-Naml 27:25)

Allah, La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne! (An-Naml 27:26)

Suleiman's character:
--he didn't interrupt the bird's explanation
--he let the bird tell him all he saw and all the reasons for coming back to camp late
--Christians, when they debate, are rude and they 'cut you off' when you're mid-sentence
--when Shaikh got into the debating chamber w/ the Christian,
--the Christian went off topic to discuss Aisha's marriage
--the kuffar will make you change topics
--they debate very dirty
--they hit 'below the belt" which means they don't argue fairly

[Sulaiman (Solomon)] said: "We shall see whether you speak the truth or you are (one) of the liars. (An-Naml 27:27)

Suleiman's character:
--he wanted to verify what the bird said
--in order to verify something, you need to have taqwa
--if you don't verify, people can get hurt

--if a Saudi Salafi heard that Shaikh Faisal is a thief, they wouldn't verify it;
--they only spread what they heard
--it's not in their best interest to verify
--people remember what they want to remember [selective remembering]
--they have hypocrisy in their hearts
--so, Suleiman gave a chance for the bird's news to be verified
--in these days, if we hear a friend is having an affair, we spread that gossip without verifying
--this is the source of ethnic cleansing: no one is verifying, just acting and over reacting
--the worst hatred is religious hatred

They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. (Aali Imran 3:118)

"Go you with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them, then draw back from them, and see what (answer) they return." (An-Naml 27:28)

She said: "O chiefs! Verily! Here is delivered to me a noble letter, (An-Naml 27:29)

"Verily! It is from Sulaiman (Solomon), and verily! It (reads): In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful; (An-Naml 27:30)

Suleiman’s letter didn’t have the mistakes that we often write, such as:
potatos=potatoes (such as Vice President Quayle did from US and it cost him the election)

Suleiman sent a letter to Bilqis (regarding her faith in the sun, not Allah tala)
--she knew it was a noble letter because she saw that is said: "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim"

“The best (Jihad) is (to speak) a word of truth to an oppressive ruler." Sunan of Abu-Dawood, Hadith 2040

Bilqis didn't find any grammatical errors in the letter
--it was one royalty sending a letter to another royalty
--when Princes William and Harry (UK) went to school, they went to Eaton [the best education]
--when Haron ar-Rasheed had a son, he employed people to come TO the palace to educate his kids
--he did jihad one year, next year: hajj and he continued this all his life

Back to Suleiman and Bilqis
--his letter had no grammatical errors and was written as if he was a noble person
--his letter began with: "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim"
--British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, wrote a letter to a woman whose son died in Iraq
--and his letter was written like rubbish
--it was so bad, that letter cost him the election!

"Verily! It is from Sulaiman (Solomon), and verily! It (reads): In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful; (An-Naml 27:30)

But Bilqis saw Suleiman's letter was a noble letter

"Be you not exalted against me, but come to me as Muslims (true believers who submit to Allah with full submission)'" (An-Naml 27:31)

Identical characters:

--Suleiman and Muhammad (saws)

And (remember) when you (Muhammad SAW) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle (of Uhud). And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Aali Imran 3:121)

--Muhammad left his home and went to the Battle of Uhud
--Suleiman took his army and marched to the battlefield [this is where he met that ant]

She said: "O chiefs! Advise me in (this) case of mine. I decide no case till you are present with me." (An-Naml 27:32)

She asked her chiefs for advice;
--this ayah shows us the importance of a Shura meeting
--"how should I respond to him?" "I can't act independently"
--even as a kaafira, she knew the importance of holding a Shura meeting

They said: "We have great strength, and great ability for war, but it is for you to command; so think over what you will command." (An-Naml 27:33)

--her chiefs advised her to command for them what she would have them do

She said: "Verily! Kings, when they enter a town (country), they despoil it, and make the most honourable amongst its people low. And thus they do. (An-Naml 27:34)

--the chiefs didn't speak wisely during the meeting because even though she was royalty
--she knows when kings enter a land, the corrupt it

"But verily! I am going to send him a present, and see with what (answer) the messengers return." (An-Naml 27:35)

The House of Saud

--they plotted w/ the British to destroy the Ottoman Empire
--and destroy the Khilafah system in Turkey
--they didn't expect the Palestinians to be given to the Jews
--when the Jewish State was established (not created because Allah tala is the "al Khaaliq" - one and only - (Creator)

So Bilqis sent him (Suleiman) many nice gifts
--this was like a chess game, you make your move, I'll make my move and then
--someone is CHECK-MATED

The Chess Game:
--Suleiman made the first move by writing Bilqis a letter to surrender to Islam or expect jihad

And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world (Al-Anfal 8:39)

So when (the messengers with the present) came to Sulaiman (Solomon), he said: "Will you help me in wealth? What Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay, you rejoice in your gift!" (An-Naml 27:36)

The men with Bilqis were out of touch with current events [fiqhul waaqi]
--Suleiman said, 'She tried to give me wealth?' What Allah gave me was greater than all these gifts
--you are the ones who are impressed w/ your own gifts: I am not impressed
--kaafirs put gifts they receive in special places and show them off

[Then Sulaiman (Solomon) said to the chief of her messengers who brought the present]: "Go back to them. We verily shall come to them with hosts that they cannot resist, and we shall drive them out from there in disgrace, and they will be abased." (An-Naml 27:37)

Suleiman returned the gifts to Bilqis
--and told her soldiers he wasn't impressed w/ these gifts: "embrace Islam"
--this is his 2nd move in the chess game
--now it's time for Bilqis to make her 2nd move
--someone will be check-mated!

He said: "O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?" (An-Naml 27:38)

An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." (An-Naml 27:39)

Suleiman asked one the chiefs to bring her Arsh back to him before she got to his compound
--he wants to be a good host and give her the comforts of her own home

One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!" then when [Sulaiman (Solomon)] saw it placed before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful!

One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye! (An-Naml 27:40)

Muhammad (saws) on the battlefield

--he was taking a little boy to the battlefield and some of the boys were jealous
--they felt they were just as strong, though younger
--one said he was stronger so Muhammad let them both fight
--when he saw the younger boy tell the truth (strong as the older boy):
--he took both boys to battle

then when [Sulaiman (Solomon)] saw it placed before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! (An-Naml 27:40)

The word "kaafir" means ungrateful [see 17:27] and in Surah Naml :40]

He said: "Disguise her throne for her that we may see whether she will be guided (to recognise her throne), or she will be one of those not guided." (An-Naml 27:41)

Inviting others to Islam
--prophets wrote short letters to invite others to Islam
--prophets didn’t ramble on and on
--so the adab and Sunnah for letters and emails is to be brief!

So when she came, it was said (to her): "Is your throne like this?" She said: "(It is) as though it were the very same." And [Sulaiman (Solomon) said]: "Knowledge was bestowed on us before her, and we were submitted to Allah (in Islam as Muslims before her)." (An-Naml 27:42)

So the throne of hers was brought to Suleiman and
--he pointed to the one he had brought from her home
--and asked if it was pleasant to her (she said yes, it was like hers @ home)
--why did he invite her to Islam first?
--before you fight them, you invite them, give them hujjah,
--and then if you must, fight them

And that which she used to worship besides Allah has prevented her (from Islam), for she was of a disbelieving people. (An-Naml 27:43)

She was worshipping the sun because the hujjah had not reach her
Recalling their chess-game (figurative)
1. Suleiman sent her a letter inviting her to Islam
2. She made the next move by send him gifts
3. Suleiman rejected her gifts
4. So her next move was to go to him directly and see this man who refused her gifts

It was said to her: "Enter As-Sarh" [(a glass surface with water underneath it) or a palace], but when she saw it, she thought it was a pool, and she (tucked up her clothes) uncovering her legs, Sulaiman (Solomon) said: "Verily, it is Sarh [(a glass surface with water underneath it) or a palace] paved smooth with slab of glass. " She said: "My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, and I submit (in Islam, together with Sulaiman (Solomon), to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)." (An-Naml 27:44)

**he had clear a tile-like floor so with water underneath, to seem like a pool
**so he had cleanliness [so much that his floor looked like water under it]

She lifted up her dress to step over the water and exposed part of her leg
--in Yemen, they were impressed with their own palace but Suleiman's "blew their mind"

She admitted: "my Lord, I have wronged myself"
"I oppressed myself because I worshipped the sun instead of Allah"
--"I know I was created by Allah to worship Allah"

and I submit (in Islam, together with Sulaiman (Solomon), to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)." (An-Naml 27:44)

"O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zûlm (wrong) indeed. (Luqman 31:13)

Bilqis confirmed the word of Luqman, the Wise
--she knew oppressed herself
--now, she asked, "What follows because the hujjah was established against me"
-- ( 'Inni Žalamtu Nafsi ) = Indeed I oppressed myself
--Bilqis surrendered IN Islam to Allah tala w/ Suleiman
--so women can't obey their husbands who are evil
