-77- Yusuf and the King

Tafseer Surah Yusuf: Yusuf and the King
by Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
(evening dars: 6.13.11)

And there entered with him two young men in the prison. One of them said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." The other said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating thereof." (They said): "Inform us of the interpretation of this. Verily, we think you are one of the Muhsinûn (doers of good) (Yusuf 12:36)

--when Yusuf was in prison in Egypt, they spoke Coptic
--the pagans who were with Yusuf asked him to interpret their dreams
--Yusuf listened to their dream and made a judgment on it
--the one he knew would be found not guilty, "mention me to your master, the Pharaoh of Egypt"

Lessons:

--millions of people in the world are in prison but they did nothing wrong to go there

And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the Kafiroon (i.e. disbelievers - of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allah's Laws). (Al-Ma'idah 5:44)

Kaafiroon: 44 [didn't judge w/ Shariah]

And whosoever does not judge by that which Allah has revealed, such are the Zalimûn (polytheists and wrong¬doers). (Al-Ma'idah 5:45)

And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed (then) such (people) are the Fasiqûn (the rebellious i.e. disobedient to Allah). (Al-Ma'idah 5:47)

Lesson:

--millions of people in prison are innocent
--most of those, if not all, in Guantanamo Bay are innocent
--Barelvis hate Muslims more than anyone else does
--they call Muslims, "Wahabbis"
--the majority of Pakis are Barelvis and you're not to pray behind them
--they worship the grave instead of Allah tala
--the gora kaafirs @ Guantanamo Bay get excited when they see people suffer
--so they refuse to close it even though they know the people are innocent
--gora kaafirs love nothing more than seeing people suffer or go to electric chair

Belmarsh Prison (UK):

--our brothers there are innocent (Abu Qatadah, Abu Hamza)
--the gora kaafir love to break up families

THE GORA KAAFIR RESEMBLE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SHAITAN

--breaking up the families is the goal of the shaitan, destroy the family unit

--the gora kaafir insult Muhammad (peace be upon him) w/ cartoons

EVERY CHARACTERISTIC OF ILBISS IS PRESENT IN THE GORA KAAFIR

When Adam ate from the haraam tree:

--the reason wanted to see his private parts
--see 7:27

O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya' (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not. (Al-A'raf 7:27)

This ayah ought to say HEAVEN not PARADISE

Gora says for us to wear jilbab and hijab are illegal

--this is how they treat Muslim women: their women can wear virtually nothing but we can't cover

Back to the interpretation of the dreams:

--Yusuf asked the one who was going to be released to tell the king about him in prison and being innocent

And the king (of Egypt) said: "Verily, I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows, whom seven lean ones were devouring - and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry. O notables! Explain to me my dream, if it be that you can interpret dreams." (Yusuf 12:43)

--the pagan forgot to tell the king so Yusuf was in jail for a total of 7 years

--the king's dream had the number seven repeated

Lesson:

--even a kaafir can get a true dream
--3 types of dreams: from Allah, from shaitan or the rambling of your mind from the daytime

"There are three types of dreams: a righteous dream which is glad tidings from Allah, the dream which causes sadness is from Shaitan, and a dream from the ramblings of the mind. (Sahih Muslim)

--the true dream from Allah is the important one because it tips you off of what is to come
--the Shaitan likes to scare us and this is why they make horror films (to scare the population)
--no one wants to die and it's a natural instinct for us to love life

Jews and Arabs:
--they hate the Arabs and if you leave them alone, they will kill each other
--the only thing unites them is hatred of us

They said: "Mixed up false dreams and we are not skilled in the interpretation of dreams." (Yusuf 12:44)

Then the man who was released (one of the two who were in prison), now at length remembered and said: "I will tell you its interpretation, so send me forth." (Yusuf 12:45)

One of the pagans who was released remembered Yusuf's interpretations of dreams

(He said): "O Yûsuf (Joseph), the man of truth! Explain to us (the dream) of seven fat cows whom seven lean ones were devouring, and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry, that I may return to the people, and that they may know." (Yusuf 12:46)

--so when the king needed an interpretation, he sent for Yusuf

[(Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual and that (the harvest) which you reap you shall leave in ears, (all) - except a little of it which you may eat. (Yusuf 12:47)

"Then will come after that, seven hard (years), which will devour what you have laid by in advance for them, (all) except a little of that which you have guarded (stored). (Yusuf 12:48)

--Yusuf's explanation was that for 7 years, the Pharaoh would have good crops and the next

--7 years would be hardship
--then there would be abundant rain for one year
--the king was impressed so he sent for Yusuf to be brought to him
--be caliphs and kings need wise men around them
--even Umar wanted the intelligent Sahabahs to be around him and not to leave Madinah
--when he had to deal w/ the fireworshippers, he didn't know what to do with them
--Abdur Rahman bin Auf said to charge them jiza [and Umar took his advice]

"Then thereafter will come a year in which people will have abundant rain and in which they will press (wine and oil)" (Yusuf 12:49)

And the king said: "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "Return to your lord and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.'" (Yusuf 12:50)

Remember the story of the girl who cried “rape?"

--Umar didn't panic but he ran to Ali for advice about this girl who seemed to cry 'rape'
--Ali boiled water and he poured it on the specimen the girl had and it revealed it was not semen but
--the white of an egg she cracked
--Ali saved Umar on this and many occasions
--you need wise men around you!

And the king said: "Bring him to me." (Yusuf 12:50)

The king asked for Yusuf to be brought to him:
--he didn't ask for a retard but for Yusuf
--because kings and caliphs need to surround themselves w/wise men
--if you can’t hear, you'll "feel"

A WORD TO THE WISE IS SUFFICIENT

Lessons:

--kings need to surround themselves w/ wise men
--knowledge elevates your honor
--knowledge doesn't know any color

King Abdullah of KSA appointed Aadil al Kilbaani
--(he is so black, he is almost blue)(when he gives khutbah, it is packed)
--there's even chaos w/ the traffic
--you will cry when you hear his khutbah
--he was the 1st black to be appointed as Imam
--knowledge knows no color
--the same as the king had no problem bringing Yusuf to him
--when you have knowledge, people don't notice your color but your knowledge

Side-note:

--the black man has something to prove to white kaafirs
--he has to prove his al walaa wal baraa
--therefore, Obama fires more rockets @ Muslims than George Bush
--why were you glad a black man went to the White House?
--he is not making decisions on his own
--don't be naive: use your aql

Verily! The worst of (moving) living creatures with Allah are the deaf and the dumb, those who understand not (i.e. the disbelievers). (Al-Anfal 8:22)

So the king asked for Yusuf to be brought to him

--retards will give you bad advice and destroy your kingdom
--the bad advice was for Bush to go to Afghanistan where everything has to be brought in on foot/land

Wise men learn from their mistakes but wiser men learn from the mistakes of others ~ Sh Faisal

--the king was humble, which is why he was asking for a prisoner to come ["bring him to me"]

--people w/ goodness in their hearts like to be in the company of scholars
--they appreciate scholars
--they have sabr w/knowledge
--A'tuni Bihi [bring him to me]
--someone who is not intelligent, don't appreciate scholars
--a jahil (ignoramus) never appreciates scholars

And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness. (Al-Furqan 25:63)

A Righteous man walks w/ humility

--don't speak to ignoramus people
--don't debate them
--they will ask mindless questions
--when people say BUT say to them: "take it up w/ Allah tala on Judgment Day"
--our job is only to give you the message

"And our duty is only to convey plainly (the Message)." (Ya-Sin 36:17)

But when the messenger came to him, [Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "Return to your lord and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.'" (Yusuf 12:50)

--Yusuf asked to have his name cleared and what happened to the women who cut their hands the day he was accused

--he knew the king wanted his knowledge and wisdom
--but he wanted to have his name cleared before he helped the king
--even Muawaiya wanted to be surrounded by wise people
--when he was given a girl to marry, he look under her skirt but decided not to marry her and give her to his son
--but the scholar said oh no, she is haraam for him now because you saw her!
--so Muawaiya took the advice of the scholar
--and the same w/ the king in Yusuf's story:

[Then Yûsuf (Joseph) said: "I asked for this enquiry] in order that he (Al-'Aziz) may know that I betrayed him not in secret. And, verily! Allah guides not the plot of the betrayers. (Yusuf 12:52)

Yusuf demanded the king carry out a public inquiry to clear his name

Lesson:

--Yusuf was the one w/ the knowledge so he had the handle and the king has the blade
--your honor [izza] is sacred
--its fard ul ayn to protect it
--Shariah demands it
--Allah tala showers his mercy on those who prevent others from backbiting him
--if you hear someone backbite your brother, you ought to defend them

Our 6 sacred things

life
wealth
honor
aql
lineage
deen

Your honor:

--it is haraam for your wife to open the door to let a man in when you are not there
--because her honor can be compromised

Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) stated: “Brother in law is death.” Book 26, Number 5400, Imaam Muslim.

"Return to your lord and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.'" (Yusuf 12:50)

(The King) said (to the women): "What was your affair when you did seek to seduce Yûsuf (Joseph)?" The women said: "Allah forbid! No evil know we against him!" The wife of Al-'Aziz said: "Now the truth is manifest (to all), it was I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely of the truthful." (Yusuf 12:51)

Lesson:

--sexual haraasment is not just from men but also women

"If one conceals the private affairs (of others) it is like reviving a girl who has been buried alive, from her grave." (ABU DAWOOD, IBN HIBBAAN, AL HAAKIM, NASAA'I)

“I have not left behind me any fitnah (temptation) more harmful to men than women.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5096; Muslim, 2740.

The women spoke the truth about Yusuf and knew nothing bad to say about him

Lesson:
--even a kaafir notices your good character
--it opens doors for you that the evil character can't get in
--the company of righteous people is important

The Prophet, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "Do not take someone as a friend, unless he is a believer, and nobody should eat your food unless he is pious." (41:4832) Abu Dawud

And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (Al-Qalam 68:4)

Two types of proposals: decent and indecent

--the women knew nothing indecent about Yusuf

Lesson:

--Yusuf was trustworthy

HADITH: There are seven whom Allah ill shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; Two men who love each other for Allah's sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: 'I fear Allah', a man who gives in charity and hides it, Narrated by Abu Hurairah & collected in Sahih al-Bukhari (English trans.) vol.1, p.356, no.629 & Sahih Muslim English trans.) Vol.2, p.493, No.2248

Shirk, zina and murder in the same ayah

And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. (Al-Furqan 25:68)

--when shirk is rife there's no taqwah
--when there's no taqwah, they commit zina
--when there's zina, people commit murder

[Then Yûsuf (Joseph) said: "I asked for this enquiry] in order that he (Al-'Aziz) may know that I betrayed him not in secret. And, verily! Allah guides not the plot of the betrayers. (Yusuf 12:52)

Don't paint all men w/ the same brush
--not all men are alike
--Prophet pbuh said he would dash for the door
--when the king said bring him to me
--but Yusuf stayed in prison until an enquiry was made to clear his name
--and proved a point: not all men will betray others or stab them in the back

"And I free not myself (from the blame). Verily, the (human) self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Yusuf 12:53)

Allah said don’t even COME NEAR to zina

And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)](Al-Isra 17:32)

--do not be in seclusion with a member of opposite s-x

--Yusuf said it was the mercy of Allah causing him to abstain from zina
--the human soul is prone to evil

Verily, the (human) self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Yusuf 12:53)

And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly. (Yusuf 12:103)

And the king said: "Bring him to me that I may attach him to my person." Then, when he spoke to him, he said: "Verily, this day, you are with us high in rank and fully trusted." (Yusuf 12:54)

The king repeated it for the 2nd time: bring him to me!

--he wanted to be surrounded by wise people not retards

And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment). (Al-A'raf 7:34)

--the last pharaoh of Egypt was Cleopatra

--king was desperate for the success of his kingdom
--astakhlisuhu linafsi!= he will be exclusive to me!

Then, when he spoke to him, he said: "Verily, this day, you are with us high in rank and fully trusted." (Yusuf 12:54)

--he was high in rank because he had knowledge and wisdom

--those who know and those who do not know: are they equal?
--of course not

Say: "Are those who know equal to those who know not?" It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah's Signs and Verses). (Az-Zumar 39:9)

And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)](Al-Isra 17:32)

Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge" (as a minister of finance in Egypt, in place of Al-'Aziz who was dead at that time). (Yusuf 12:55)

Eventually, 'the aziz' died (the husband of Zulaikha)
Yusuf wanted to take over his job

Lesson:
--this shows that you are allowed to nominate yourself to a post/portfolio if you know you are qualified
--however not for pride reasons
--if you are not qualified ..you are deceiving them
--you can also take on a job if you confident in yourself
--sometimes a man can take on a job even though he has no experience because he has confidence in himself
--your taqwah makes you suitable for certain jobs
--best merit on your CV is your taqwah
--low self esteem sets you back: you must have self confidence..

Muhammad (saws) was shocked when Yusuf didn't rush to the door when he was sent free

he refused to leave prison until his name was cleared

"Bring him to me." (Yusuf 12:50)

[Then Yûsuf (Joseph) said: "I asked for this enquiry] in order that he (Al-'Aziz) may know that I betrayed him not in secret. And, verily! Allah guides not the plot of the betrayers. (Yusuf 12:52)

When the messenger came – we are talking about two verses later when the messenger comes and the messenger says, “The king is calling you.” – the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “He refused to go until he made sure that his excuse was well known. Had it been for me and had I been in his case, I would have rushed to the door.” Thus did We give full authority to Yûsuf (Joseph) in the land, to take possession therein, as when or where he likes. We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We please, and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinûn (the good doers). (Yusuf 12:56)
