Bismillah…

The greatest miracle of all times is al-Qur'an
-it’s the best Book, revealed via the best Angel (Jibril),
-to his best Prophet (Muhammad saws),
-in the best city (Makkah), during the best month (Ramadan)

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

FASTING WAS DECREED TO GAIN TAQWAH

Taqwah:
place between yourself and the wrath of Allah (tala)
-a barrier by doing what is fard and abstaining from haraam

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Qur'an was revealed in Ramadan

-as a guidance and mercy for mankind
-when you sight the crescent and you are at home, you must fast
-there is not fast for the traveler until he returns home, but this is left up to the discretion of the traveler
-some of the Sahabah did fast when they traveled, no one criticized them for doing so

FASTING IN RAMADAN IS DONE TO SHOW GRATITUDE TO ALLAH

FASTING FOR THE TRAVELER IS NOT REQUIRED

-Those that fasted did not criticize those that didn’t fast
-in the Meccan society, there were a lot of vices
-Rasulallah would go to the cave of Hira
-and contemplate about the condition of Quraysh
-prostitution, as well
-a woman would have a flag at her doorstep that means she was a woman of zina
-Riba was widespread
-the pagan Arabs worshipped 360 idols

Rasulallah was disgusted and would take food and drink with him in the cave while he would isolate himself from his people..
..one night, while he was in the cave of Hira during Ramadan, in Laylat al-Qadr, Angel Jibril came to him and revealed the Qur'an (al-Alaq 1-5)

THE VIRTUES OF RAMADAN

1. ANYONE WHO FASTS IN RAMADAN w/ FAITH and HOPING FOR ALLAH'S FORGIVENESS

-all his sins will be forgiven
-anyone who fast in Ramadan with Imaan and sincerity,
-all his previous sins will forgiven

In a hadith narrated by Salman Al-Farsi, the Prophet () said, "Whoever feeds a fasting person, will be recompensed with forgiveness of sins and salvation from Hell. He will receive the same reward as the fasting person without causing him any reduction (in his reward).”

-from one Jumu'ah to another Jumu'ah, and from one Ramadan to another Ramadan,
-wipes out all sins if we abstain from the major sins
-also the five daily prayers do the same**
-Rasulallah said "Ameen" on 3 occasions

“The five daily prayers, Friday prayer to the following Friday prayer, and Ramadan to the following Ramadan are expiations for sins as long as one abstains from major sins. [Muslim]

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ascended the mimbar and said: “Ameen, ameen, ameen.” It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, you ascended the mimbar and said, ‘Ameen, ameen, ameen. He said: “Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me and said: ‘If Ramadan comes and a person is not forgiven, he will enter Hell and Allaah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.’ So I said Ameen So I said Ameen. He said: ‘O Muhammad, if both or one of a person’s parents are alive and he does not honour them and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allaah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.’ So I said Ameen. He said: ‘If you are mentioned in a person’s presence and he does not send blessings upon you and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allaah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.’ So I said Ameen.” Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan, 3/188

Jibril revealed to him that whosoever did not benefit from his fasting in Ramadan is cursed
Rasulallah said Ameen to that du'a, and that person will enter Hell

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” Bukhari 31 Hadith 125

2. FASTING IS A SHIELD

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” (Ahmad, Bazzaar & Bayhaqi)

-the way a police would wear a bullet proof jacket from the bullets,
-likewise fasting is a screen, a shield from the temptation from the society
-the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person
-is more pleasing to ALLAH than musk
-using tooth paste while you are fasting is permissible

Abu Hurayrah (Radhiyallaho anho) relates that Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) said, "My Ummah were given five things for Ramadan which were not given to anyone except them. For them, the smell from mouth of a fasting person is more sweeter to Allah than the fragrant smell of musk

-in Ramadan, the shayateen are chained,
-but Iblis himself is not chained, only the roaming shayateen are chained,
-so its possible for us to sin
-the gates of Jannah are opened and the gates of Jahanaam are closed

Al-Bukhaari (1899) and Muslim (1079) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.”

-there is a gate in Jannah called Rayyan,
-and this is the gates of the fasting people
-Ramadan will intercede on Yawm al-Qiyamat

"There is a gate to Paradise that is called ar-Rayyan. On the Day of Resurrection it will say: 'Where are those who fasted?' When the last [one] has passed through the gate, it will be locked." [al-Bukhari and Muslim].

“He leaves his food, drink and desires because of Me. Fasting is for My sake and I shall reward it. And every good deed shall be rewarded ten-fold.” (Recorded in Bukhari)

-our good deeds are ours, and we get 10 good deeds for one good deed,
-but fasting is for ALLAH and HE can multiply it by 700
-fasting is for ALLAH's sake

“He leaves his food, drink and desires because of Me. Fasting is for My sake and I shall reward it. And every good deed shall be rewarded ten-fold.” (Recorded in Bukhari)

ALLAH will reward the fasting of Ramadan and HE will reward it as HE pleases

3. THE HOLY QUR'AN INTERCEDES FOR US
-there are many types of' Shafa'a
-the fasting in Ramadan will intercede just as Qur'an will intercede
-were we to ask such things, we would prove ourselves to be hypocrites

"The fast and the Qur'an are two intercessors for the servant of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: 'O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.' The Qur'an will say: 'I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.' And their intercession will be accepted." [Ahmad]

“And every good deed shall be rewarded ten-fold.” (Recorded in Bukhari)

This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn. (It is said that one's left thigh will be the first to bear the witness).(Ya-Sin 36:65)
no Muslim can ask how Ramadan will intercede, for we would limit the Power of ALLAH and HE is al-Qaadir (the All-Able)

THE 18 VIRTUES OF RAMADAN

1. YOU KEEP IN TOUCH W/ THE HOLY QUR'AN

-the Hafiz finishes the Qur'an in salat al-Taraweeh
-we are permitted to give the Hafiz a salary for his recitation in Ramadan
-Rasulallah gave a woman in nikah to a man
-and her Mahr was for the husband to teach her Qur'an

-Imam Shafi'i said that a hafiz who teaches others Qur'an can charge a salary
-Imam Shafi'i pass the Fatwa of a salary for reciting the Qur'an

PRAYING OUR TARAWEEH PRAYERS
-in Makkah & and Madina they pray 23 raka'at
-In Saudi, some do 8 or 20, 23
-In Indian Sub-continent, they pray 20 Raka'at
-we cannot criticize people who pray less raka'at during Ramadan
-if you do so, you might lose in Barakah in your Salah
-some have obligations and they might shorten their Taraweeh

REASON WHY IT WAS 23 RAKA'AT IN UMAR'S TIME
- its because two men were arguing whether to pray 8 or 12,
- so Umar added the 2 numbers and they ended up with a new number of Raka'at
- someone screamed "Bida'a! Bida'a"
- Umar assembled the people into one Jama'ah
- that was one of the of the greatest accomplishments for this Ummah

THE SUNNAH IS 11 RAKA'AT
The Shia don’t pray Taraweeh

Of all the numbers mentioned, none is sounder than 11 raka'at. 'Aishah (ra) was asked how was the prayer of the Prophet (saw) She replied: "He did not pray in Ramadan or some other times more than eleven raka'at." (Muslim/Bukhari)

The Huffadh look forward to Ramadan,

-and they memorize the Qur'an with care and get ready from Ramadan
-the Sunnah of Umar is 23 Raka'at
-the Sunnah of Rasulallah is 11 Raka'at as our mother Ai'sha said in Hadith
-in the west, due to lack of knowledge,
-people make a big issue with the number of Raka’at in Salat al-Taraweeh

2. IT KEEPS YOU IN TOUCH w/ ALLAH (tala)
-it keeps us in close contact with ALLAH when we pray Taraweeh

3. ITS A MEANS TO HAVE YOUR SINS FORGIVEN
-its an opportunity to have our sins forgiven

4. IT'S A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO BECOME HEALTHY
-its a golden opportunity to become healthy as Rasulallah said in hadith

Fast and you will be healthy." It is part of a hadeeth reported by lbn 'Adiyy in al-Koamil (7/2521) by way of Nahshal ibn Sa'eed: from ad-Dahhaak: Fast and you will be healthy." It is part of a hadeeth reported by lbn 'Adiyy in al-Koamil (7/2521) by way of Nahshal ibn Sa'eed: from ad-Dahhaak:

A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with little food) and a kaafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats with seven intestines" (Bukhari)

-we do not overeat, our stomach shrinks,
-some eat till their bellies stretch, this is a sign of the hypocrites
-Muslims eat in one intestine, Kuffar eat in seven intestines
-big bellies do not give us a good public image

5. IT TEACHES YOU SABR (PATIENCE)
-fasting teaches us Sabr
-there is set time for the breaking of the fasting
-because were we to break our fast 5 minutes before the time,
-our fasting will be bautil

6. IT TEACHES YOU UNITY
-likewise if a man has a beautiful wife, he will learn to wait
-till the breaking of his fast before he has any relations with her
-fasting in Ramadan brings unity; we fast the same month
-even the Shia, the Barelvis and the Qadiyanis fast in Ramadan
-but they get nothing but thirst and hunger
-it enhances the Islamic brotherhood and sisterhood

7. IT ENHANCES THE ISLAMIC BROTHERHOOD AND THE ISLAMIC SISTERHOOD
-we invite Muslims in our houses for breaking their fast

8. ITS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE EXPATIATION OF SINS

"Fasting the day of 'Ashura' (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year." (Muslim)

-the pregnant women feed the poor because they cannot fast
-and they get their sins forgiven
-we also feed the fasting people, we will get their Barakah and we will be forgiven

Zaid ibn Khalid Juhni related that the Prophet said: He who provides for the breaking of the Siyam of another person earns the same merit as the one who was observing Siyam diminishing in any way the reward of the latter (Tirmidhi).

In a hadith narrated by Salman Al-Farsi, the Prophet (saws) said, “Whoever feeds a fasting person, will be recompensed with forgiveness of sins and salvation from Hell. He will receive the same reward as the fasting person without causing him any reduction (in his reward).”

9. IT TEACHES YOU CONSCIENCE

-those who are wealthy should feed the fasting person*
-we did not lock our doors and commit sins buy eating & drinking
-or having relations with our spouses
-because we know that ALLAH is watching us

10. ITS SEPARATES THE BELIEVERS FROM THE MUNAFIQEEN
-it separates the Believers & Disbelievers & Munafiqeen
-some Muslims in Saudi who are 70 years old fast !
-some Munafiqeen travel away from their families to avoid fasting in Ramadan
-if you're young, healthy and strong - you are required to fast

ALLAH DIDN’T GIVE THE MUNAFIQEEN THE TAWFEEQ TO FAST
-ALLAH didn’t want their fast perhaps because they deny the Haakimiyya of ALLAH,
-or they believe its ok to spy on Muslims
-maybe you're evil in your aqeeda if you don't have the Tawfeeq to fast
-or is it ok to pray to the graves

11. IT TEACHES YOU ADAPTABILITY (you're flexible)
-you are not fixed, rather you are flexible, the Suhur is taken before sunrise
-in Asian community it is called Sehri
-when the Adhan is called at Maghrib, we are ordered to rush to break our fast
-Rasulallah said as long as the Ummah rushes to break their fast,
-it will be in goodness
-we should eat at Suhur for there is Barakah during this time

1233. Sahl ibn Sa'd reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "People will continue to be all right as long as they hurry to break the fast." [IMAM NAWAWI Agreed upon]

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ascended the mimbar and said: “Ameen, ameen, ameen.” It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, you ascended the minbar and said, ‘Ameen, ameen, ameen.” He said: “Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me and said: ‘If Ramadan comes and a person is not forgiven, he will enter Hell and Allaah will cast him far away. Say Ameen.’ So I said Ameen. Say Ameen.’ So I said Ameen.”

12. IT GIVES YOU A SENSE OF BELONGING / IDENTITY

"Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it." Sahih Bukhari, Vol.3, Book 31, #146, Narrated Anas bin Malik

Ramadan gives us a sense of belonging & identity

-because we are from the Ummah of Rasulallah
-only break your fast w/ dates or something sweet (preferably, dates) unless you
-it is makrooh to delay the Iftar and we are to
-break our fast with dates (its Sunnah Muakkadah)
-if not dry dates (unless you are poor)
-Rasulallah commanded us to open fasting with dates

Salman ibn Amir Dhabi related that the Prophet said: Break your fast with dates, or else with water, for it is pure (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).

13. IT’S A MEANS FOR GAINING VICTORY OVER THE KUFFAAR

THE BATTLE OF BADR

-it is a means to gain victory over the Kuffar
-THE BATTLE OF BADR: THE TURNING POINT IN HISTORY
-Badr took place in the 17th of Ramadan, Fath Makkah, conquering of Spain
-many battles were fought and won in Ramadan
-Tariq ibn Ziad was 17 years old when he conquered Spain
-Tariq ibn Ziyad conquered Spain with 12 000 men,
-after 93 years of the Hijra (711 CE)

BATTLE OF HITTIN
-BATTLE OF HITTIN also took place in Ramadan
-Salahuddin al-Ayyubi conquered Jerusalem, 583 years after AH (1187 CE)

BATTLE OF AIN JALOOT
-all these victories take places because Shayateen are chained
-the Muslims defeated the Tartars then
-Ain Jaloot, when Tartars came in Baghdad
-Mu’tasim was the Khilafah
-the Tartars came and threw our books in the Euphrates and Tigris
-the water became dark because of the ink

MAHMOOD SAIFU DEEN QUTUZ
-Mahmood Saifu Deen Qutuz (leader of Egypt at that time)
-received 3 ambassadors and a letter from the Tartars
-the letter said that our women were widows and the men were killed
-Mahmood killed the ambassadors and hanged them in public for everyone to see
-he gathered the Muslims and they went to fight the Tartars in Ain Jaloot
-they did Jihaad to defend the Deen
-Ain Jaloot was called the "The Moment of Truth"
-in battle, the Tartars had the upper hand

MAHMOOD GAVE ANOTHER SPEECH
- and his words gave courage to the men and they defeated the Kuffar
-Ain Jaloot took occurred on the 25th of Ramadan in 658 AH
-certain forces on earth were never defeated before but when they meet Muslims
-they taste their first defeat

The Muslims are known to break the backs of the so-called superpowers
-the Muslims in Ain Jaloot preferred to go down in history
-as men who face the Kuffar rather than surrendering to them

14. IT MAKES YOU FEEL THE HUNGER THAT POOR PEOPLE FEEL
-[YOU BECOME CHARITABLE]
-it makes us feel the hunger of the poor, and thus we become more charitable

15. IT MAKES YOU SAVE BACK ON MONEY /SPENDING
-we reduce our daily meals, and we save our money
-we cannot fast with the intention to lose weight, we must have ikhlaas an niyyah
-we fast to please ALLAH

16. IT TEACHES YOU SELF-RESTRAINT and TAQWAH
-Ramadan is a guest for 30 days
-Ramadan is not merely physical, but also emotional & spiritual
-we fast to be from the Muttaqoon

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

In an another hadith, the Holy Prophet warned, "How many persons fast and get nothing out of their fasting except hunger and thirst and how many persons pray at night and get nothing out of it except sleeplessness."

-some only get hunger & thirst from their fast due to their intention

a) make your intention to fast before the athaan of Fajr
-you heart has to fast
-you have no blessing that day if you wait till after the athaan
-no fasting if intention is made after Adhan

IMAM MALIK SAID 1 INTENTION IS ENOUGH FOR ALL OF RAMADAN

THE HANBALIS BELIEVE THE INTENTION MUST BE MADE EACH DAY

Imam Ahmed said we must make an intention everyday and that is the correct opinion

b) you're not permitted to carry grudges
-every Mondays & Thursdays, our good deeds are shown to ALLAH

The gates of Paradise will be opened on Mondays and on Thursdays, and every servant [of Allah] who associates nothing with Allah will be forgiven, except for the man who has a grudge against his brother. [About them] it will be said: Delay these two until they are reconciled; delay these two until they are reconciled. Qudsi 20

-so you have about 48 hrs to forgive grudges and ask forgiveness for them
-your 2 eyes have to fast and they cannot look at haraam

c) your 2 eyes and hands must also fast - as well as your tongue
-(no back-biting or slander)
-we are allowed to perform Jihaad in Ramadan

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" Bukhari 111 / 127

-when we don’t give up evil speech & action, ALLAH is in no need of our fasting
-if one comes to us with slanders and backbiting, we must turn away from that person
-our tongues must fast

**BE BOLD AND SAY: I AM FASTING, SO I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR ARGUMENT
we cannot go to casinos or brothels, our feet must fast
after Maghrib, spouses are allowed to have relations,
and private parts must fast in Ramadan
we must not surrender ourselves to zina

Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him." Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 481

When you have a car, you must service it:

-the oil, the spark plugs and such (tires, too)
-so we must service ourselves: hearts and minds and bodies

IN JAHILIYYA
-only the weak fall by the wayside
-only the strong survive in Jahil society

17. IT CONTAINS THE NIGHT OF POWER
-the best night of all occurs in Ramadan
-it is better than a 1000 months

18. FOR US TO PERFORM UMRAH, WE GET THE BARAKAH OF HAJJ
-Umrah in Ramadan equals the reward of Hajj
-that is the significance of Ramadan in the sight of ALLAH

“When the month or Ramadan arrives, go for ‘umrah, because `umrah in Ramadan is like accompanying me on Hajj.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1764)]

***WHEN RAMADAN IS HERE, SOME PEOPLE BECOME PIOUS BUT AFTERWARD, THEY GO BACK TO WICKED WAYS

-they do not really worship Allah 'tala
-those that abstain from haraam only in Ramadan, they worship Ramadan and not ALLAH
-In Southhall, the Sikh girls hate Ramadan
-because their boyfriends restrain from them
-we say to these girls that these boys worship Ramadan and not ALLAH

"Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it." Sahih Bukhari, Vol.3, Book 31, #146, Narrated Anas bin Malik
