Tafseer Surah Taubah Continued

If you march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people, and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allah is Able to do all things. (At-Tawbah 9:39)

- last time we were here we stopped at this ayah
- if you do not go to the frontline Allah will punish you
- i.e. you women will be raped, your scholars will be dumped in prisons
- your men will be in concentration camps
- Allah says - 2:251

And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allah is full of Bounty to the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). (Al-Baqarah 2:251)

- if you have natural resources your neighbours are going to steal from you

"Whenever a people abandon jihad they suffer ignobility in the land" [al-Baladhuri in 'Ansab al-Ashraf' (Vol. 3, pg. 236) No. 12]

Abu Bakr (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Whenever a people give up jihad Allah causes to decend on them a punishment from Himself. And the evil of the wicked ones will not affect you if you are guided. But when the punishment comes all of us will suffer if we abandon jihad. [al-Tabarani in 'al-Mujam al-Aswat' (Vol. 4, pg. 148) No. 3839]

Ibn Umar narrated the prophet (SAW) said: “If you deal in usury (riba) and hang onto the tails of cows, being satisfied with cultivation and ceasing to take part in Jihad, Allah will inflict a humiliation upon you which will not be removed until you return to your religion.” [Reported by Ahmad (2/42) No. 5007 and Abu Dawud (2/296) No. 3462 and graded as authentic by Al-Qattan. Al-Hafiz states in Al-Bulugh that the chain of narrators is trustworthy and reliable]

- return to your religion means to return to jihad

If you help him (Muhammad SAW) not (it does not matter), for Allah did indeed help him when the disbelievers drove him out, the second of two, when they (Muhammad SAW and Abu Bakr) were in the cave, and he (SAW) said to his companion (Abu Bakr):"Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His Sakinah (calmness, tranquillity, peace, etc.) upon him, and strengthened him with forces (angels) which you saw not, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while it was the Word of Allah that became the uppermost, and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (At-Tawbah 9:40)

- the word of the kuffaar is shirk
- the word of Allah is the uppermost

- Allah sent this ayah because when the rasul was migrating from Mecca to Medina
- there was a reward for whoever captured him
- Medina is north from Mecca, but the rasul (SAW) headed south to Yemen instead
- to lie to the enemy is halal, you can lie to save a marriage
- you can lie to make to Muslims make up if they hate each other
- some lies are halal

...Ibn Shihab said he did not hear that exemption was granted in anything what the people speak as lie but in three cases: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons and the narration of the words of the husband to his wife, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband (in a twisted form in order to bring reconciliation between them). [Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Hadith #6303]

Narrated Ka'b ibn Malik: When the Prophet (SAW) intended to go on an expedition, he always pretended to be going somewhere else, and he would say: "War is deception". [Abu Dawud 2629, Tirmidhi 1681, Ahmed 14312]

- Asma got slapped in the face, because she lied and said she did not know
- Abu Bakr (RA) become worried and said what if they look carefully they will see us
- the prophet (SAW) said do not be sad Allah is with us
- Taubah 40 is important to the Sunnis

…when they (Muhammad SAW and Abu Bakr) were in the cave, and he (SAW) said to his companion (Abu Bakr):"Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allah is with us… (At-Tawbah 9:40)

- in this ayah Allah pronounced Abu Bakr (RA) a Sahabah
- so how an earth can you (Shi’ites) say he is a kaafir?
- this is one of the ayahs the Shi’ites try to deny

- when the disbelievers drove them out, it was a prediction made by Waraqah

…Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly."… [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith #003]

- to hear his own people would drive him out was shocking
- he looked back at Mecca , and said you are the most sacred land on earth

Abdullah bin 'Adi bin Al-Hamra reported that he heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, "By Allah ! You (O Makkah) are the best of Allah' s land, and most beloved to Him. Had I not been driven away from you, I would have never departed (from you)." (recorded by At-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah; At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Sahih')

- Abu Jahal wanted to scatter the rasuls (SAW) blood amongst 7 tribes

And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad SAW) to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners. (Al-Anfal 8:30)

- 36:9

And We have put a barrier before them, and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them up, so that they cannot see. (Ya-Sin 36:9)

- this was the ayah the rasul (SAW) recited when he was migrating
- and sprinkled dust over their heads and they did not see them

- Ali killed more kuffaar than any other Sahabah
- the prophet (SAW) went south towards Yemen and stayed in the cave for three days
- and then left the cave after three days
- it was Asma (RA) who would take food and water to the cave
- God-fearing women can keep secrets
- if a woman has no Taqwah, you can not trust her with ANY information
- Muslim brothers keep secrets as they have something to prove
- a woman has nothing to lose and nothing to prove
- this is why a man is able to keep secrets more than women
- Asma was able to keep a secret because she was God-fearing
- a woman that is not God-fearing cannot protect her tongue and her private parts
- only a God-fearing person can protect these two organs

Narrated By Sahl bin Sa'd: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 76, Hadith #481]

- there was a cob web at the front of the cave
- so the kuffaar thought it is not broken he cannot be in there

Narrated By Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet and asked, "A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them fights in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet said, "He who fights that Allah's Word (i.e. Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 52, Hadith #65]

- Any one who fights to make la ilaha ilala the highest he is the mujahid

Verily, those who have turned back (have apostated) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them, Shaitan (Satan) has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allah) prolonged their term (age). (Muhammad 47:25)

This is because they said to those who hate what Allah has sent down: "We will obey you in part of the matter," but Allah knows their secrets. (Muhammad 47:26)

- if you join something which goes against what Allah has sent down
- you have nullified your Shahadah
- i.e. illuminate, you are not allowed to join a kaafir foundation that goes against Muslims

March forth, whether you are light (being healthy, young and wealthy) or heavy (being ill, old and poor), strive hard with your wealth and your lives in the Cause of Allah. This is better for you, if you but knew. (At-Tawbah 9:41)

- you should go forward if you are light weight or heavy
- a person who is ill can still go to the frontlines

Abu Hurayra said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW), said, "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer although there is good in each. Desire that which will bring you benefit, and seek help from Allah and do not give way to incapacity. If something happens to you, do not say, 'If only I had done such-and-such.' Rather say, 'The decree of Allah. He does what He will.' Otherwise you will open yourself up to the action of Shaytan." [Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Hadith #6441]

- look at the Sahabah who was blind and he still went for jihad (Abdullah ibn Umm-Maktum)
- what did he do? he carried the flag for the Muslims
- because he did not want to go to his grave without participating in jihad

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite. [Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Hadith 4696]

- how many of you knew a woman can go for jihad?
- a woman saved the rasuul (SAW) life at the battle of Uhud
- she fought when she was in her 60's

Umm Umarah, demonstrated courage and fearlessness in the battle of Uhud.

Hamza bin Sa'eed (RA) narrates that some woollen shawls were once brought to Umar (RA). Amongst them was a very large one of excellent quality. Some people indicated that it was of great value and should be sent to Safiyya bint Ubayd who was recently married to Umar's son Abdullaah (RA). However, Umar said, "I shall send it to someone who is more deserving to it, namely Ummu Ammaara Nusayba bint Ka'b (RA) about whom I heard Rasulullaah (SAW) say, 'Whether it was to the right or to the left, in whichever direction I turned I saw her fighting in my defence."' [Ibn Sa'd narrating from Waaqidi, as quoted in Kanzul Ummaal (Vol. 7, pg. 98)]

Narrated Umm Umarah: 'I reached the battlefield in the service of the fighters in the morning. In the beginning the Muslims were dominant and pressing hard on the enemy lines, but later victory deserted them and confusion and disruption spread amongst them. At that time, I went near the Prophet and in his defence began to use a sword, and shoot arrows until I was injured by the enemy. I saw the mark of a big wound on my shoulder and it was by Ibn Qamiah, may Allah destroy him! When the Muslims, after the defeat, ran away from the Prophet. Ibn Qamiah advanced shouting, 'Tell me - where is Muhammad! If he goes life from this battlefield I have no escape. This is my ruin and death!'. At this, I, Musab and some other companions who were guarding the Prophet faced him. It was here when Ibn Qamiah struck me, I also attacked him many times but the enemy of Allah was wearing 2 sets of armour.' [Seerat ibn Hisham, Vol. 3, p. 29; Tabaqat ibn Saad Vol. 8, p. 301]

- Google; Khawla bint al Azwar and read about her life story
- she fought like a man on the back of horses
- when the Sahabahs were sleeping, she would keep watch and at day time she was fighting
- where did she get her strength from? they call her the warrior behind the veil
- a woman can go for jihad if the Ameer gives permission, very few fought
- women usually go to cook food etc
- do not abandon jihad and put conditions on it like the MADkhalis
- they say no jihad without a caliph
- do not be like the Soofis and say jihad nafs is the greatest jihad
- this hadith contradicts Taubah 19

FABRICATED HADITH: "We have come back from the minor jihad to the major one" someone asked: "What is the major Jihad O Messenger of Allah?" he replied: "Jihad of the nafs," (This report, collected by Bayhaqi is fabricated as mentioned in Mannaar as-Subl of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah)

Ibn Taiymiyyah said in Al-Furqan PP. 44-45: "This hadith has no sources and nobody whomsoever in the field of Islamic knowledge has narrated it. Jihad against the disbelivers is the most noble of actions and moreover it is the most important action for the mankind."

Do you consider the providing of drinking water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) as equal to the worth of those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah? They are not equal before Allah. And Allah guides not those people who are the Zalimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers). (At-Tawbah 9:19)

- Bayhaqi was a student of al-Hakim, al-Hakim had 50 fabricated hadiths in his al-Mustadarak

Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame, etc.), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home). Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward; (An-Nisa 4:95)

- this hadith also goes against Surah Nisa
- this hadith goes against the Quran on many counts
- fabricated hadiths always contradict the Holy Quran

Had it been a near gain (booty in front of them) and an easy journey, they would have followed you, but the distance (Tabuk expedition) was long for them, and they would swear by Allah, "If we only could, we would certainly have come forth with you." They destroy their ownselves, and Allah knows that they are liars. (At-Tawbah 9:42)

- you have already fallen into fitnah
- the fitnah of hypocrisy

Allah said if the journey was short and they would collect booty, they would have gone
- but they did not because the journey was long
- the hypocrites used to find out who the prophet is fighting
- if there will be money and women they would go, they follow dunya

May Allah forgive you (O Muhammad SAW). Why did you grant them leave (for remaining behind, you should have persisted as regards your order to them to proceed on Jihad), until those who told the truth were seen by you in a clear light, and you had known the liars? (At-Tawbah 9:43)

- the hypocrites always give excuses, excuse about their wives, children
- they gave excuse of being weak because of the Syrian women
- and the prophet allowed them to stay behind
- Allah said why did the prophet (SAW) allow them

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your leave to be exempted from fighting with their properties and their lives, and Allah is the All-Knower of Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2). (At-Tawbah 9:44)

It is only those who believe not in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts are in doubt that ask your leave (to be exempted from Jihad). So in their doubts they waver (At-Tawbah 9:45)

- only munafiqs will come with excuses to be exempted from jihad
- a believer will never find excuses to stay away because the munafiq is always wavering
- a munafiq will always lie

In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. (Al-Baqarah 2:10)

The signs of a munafiq are 4

Narrated By 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.
1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 2, Hadith #033]

- you cannot trust him with money and your wives
- and his tongue is very dirty

So the munafiq during the time of the prophet used to lie to be excused from fighting in jihad
- they said the Syrian women were very beautiful and so they are scared of the fitnah
- we say to you already you have fallen into fitnah, the fitnah of hypocrisy and it increased
- but Allah caused the believers to increase in Eemaan
- so those of you that preach that Eemaan is static are jahil

And whenever there comes down a Sûrah (chapter from the Qur'an), some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice. (At-Tawbah 9:124)

And if they had intended to march out, certainly, they would have made some preparation for it, but Allah was averse to their being sent forth, so He made them lag behind, and it was said (to them), "Sit you among those who sit (at home)." (At-Tawbah 9:46)

- averse means to hate, Allah hates for them to be on the frontline with you
- because they are not frontline material, if they had wanted to prepare they would have
- Allah did not give them the tawfiq to make some sort of preparations

Had they marched out with you, they would have added to you nothing except disorder, and they would have hurried about in your midst (spreading corruption) and sowing sedition among you, and there are some among you who would have listened to them. And Allah is the All-Knower of the Zalimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). (At-Tawbah 9:47)

- if they had marched out with you
- they would have caused disorder and spread fitnah among the mujahideen
- one bad apple spoils the whole bag, you need to pay attention to quality not quantity
- because they would only add khabalah (disorder), they will turn one mujahid against the other
- or incite people against the Ameer

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). (Al-Anfal 8:46)

How can you have this on the battlefield?
- when Allah commanded you to have unity on the battlefield
- Allah said obey Allah and His messenger and do not dispute amongst yourselves
- and to be patient

So if Allah commanded you to have these, why will you take them to cause disorder?
- we do not want quantity but quality

Among you are some unsuspecting Muslims (not hypocrites), who will listen to them
- this person is weak in faith, but not a hypocrite
- there are some youths who are easily swayed and they are very naive
- so these people will be corrupted by the hypocrites

Verily, they had plotted sedition before, and had upset matters for you, - until the truth (victory) came and the Decree of Allah (His Religion, Islam) became manifest though they hated it. (At-Tawbah 9:48)

Mutiny means sedition
- so they were plotting mutiny in all the battles, but Allah protected His Deen

In Uhud the prophet left with many Sahabah
- but 300 turned back because of Abdullah ibn Ubay
- so the rasul was left with 700 Sahabah to fight

And among them is he who says:"Grant me leave (to be exempted from Jihad) and put me not into trial." Surely, they have fallen into trial. And verily, Hell is surrounding the disbelievers. (At-Tawbah 9:49)

- the trial here is what he said he had a weakness for beautiful girls
- but Allah said surely you have fallen into fitnah
- that of hypocrisy

If good befalls you (O Muhammad SAW), it grieves them, but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: "We took our precaution beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing. (At-Tawbah 9:50)

- when the Muslims won at Badr it caused the hypocrites grieve
- but when they lost at Uhud they rejoiced
- and said look we are so clever we did not go for the jihad, we did not go and die but turned back
- this is the mentality of the munafiq, when good comes to you he is sad

Say: "Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector)." And in Allah let the believers put their trust. (At-Tawbah 9:51)

Say: "Do you wait for us (anything) except one of the two best things (martyrdom or victory); while we await for you either that Allah will afflict you with a punishment from Himself or at our hands. So wait, we too are waiting with you." (At-Tawbah 9:52)

- so when you go to the frontline
- Allah said it is one of two

1. either you get martyrdom or
2. you come back with booty

- so it is a win-win situation for the believer but not for the munafiq because they are killed

It is halal to kill the munafiq, but it is left to the ijtihad of the Ameer
- evidence that the munafiq is killed:

A man came to the rasul and asked for his opinion
- but when he was given a verdict, he did not accept it
- so he went to Abu Bakr for his opinion, Abu Bakr asked, did you ask the prophet?
- he said yes; but I want your opinion. Abu Bakr drove him away
- then he went to Umar for his opinion, Umar asked, did you ask the prophet?
- he said yes; but I want your opinion. Umar said wait I’ll bring you my opinion
- he reached for his sword and chopped off his head and said this is my opinion
- because he was trying to veto the prophet and the prophet did not say Umar was overreacting
- a munafiq likes shopping around for opinions
- going from one Shaikh to the other
- trying to get a fatwa that suits his desires

This is the evidenced used by the scholars to say it is halal to kill the munafiq
- but you are not allowed to take the law in your own hands, it is up to the Ameer

'Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Muhammad Ibn Habeeb Ibn Abee Habeeb on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather [who] said:I witnessed Khaalid Ibn 'Abdullah Al-Qasree - and he addressed them at Waasit - "Oh People, make sacrifice, may Allah accept it from you. Verily I am sacrificing Al-Ja'd Ibn Dirham, for indeed he claims that Allah did not take Ibrahim as a khaleel (close friend), and [that] He did not speak to Moosa. Most Perfect is He and exalted is He from what Al-Ja'd says." Then he descended and slaughtered him. I say: And the Jahmiyyah and Mu'tazilah speak with this, and they distort the text of the revelation regarding that, and they claim that the Lord is purified of that [i.e. having spoken to Moses and taken Ibrahim as a khalil] Mukhtasar al-Uluww" of adh-Dhahabi, (p.133).

Khalid ibn Abdullah al Qasri killed Ja'ad ibn Dirham
- but he was the Ameer, so he had the power to do so
- but you can not take the law into your own hands
- and call people that drink alcohol hypocrites

When the prophet died some people refused to pay Zakah
- Abu Bakr made takfir on them and killed them

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) breathed his last and Abu Bakr was appointed as his successor (Caliph), those amongst the Arabs who wanted to become apostates became apostates. 'Umar b. Khattab said to Abu Bakr: Why would you fight against the people, when the Messenger of Allah declared: I have been directed to fight against people so long as they do not say: There is no god but Allah, and he who professed it was granted full protection of his property and life on my behalf except for a right? His (other) affairs rest with Allah. Upon this Abu Bakr said: By Allah, I would definitely fight against him who severed prayer from Zakat, for it is the obligation upon the rich. By Allah, I would fight against them even to secure the cord (used for hobbling the feet of a camel) which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (as Zakat) but now they have withheld it. Umar b. Khattab remarked: By Allah, I found nothing but the fact that Allah had opened the heart of Abu Bakr for (perceiving the justification of) fighting (against those who refused to pay Zakat) and I fully recognized that the (stand of Abu Bakr) was right. [Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith #0029]

Say: "Spend (in Allah's Cause) willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Verily, you are ever a people who are Fasiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)." (At-Tawbah 9:53)

And nothing prevents their contributions from being accepted from them except that they disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger (Muhammad SAW); and that they came not to As-Salat (the prayer) except in a lazy state; and that they offer not contributions but unwillingly. (At-Tawbah 9:54)

A munafiq dislikes to spend on the path of Allah, it is a burden on them
