Bismillah...

-Tomorrow is the first day of fasting
-so many people are doing taraweeh tonight

What is the definition of fasting?
-the literal meaning is "imsaak" - abstention
-technical meaning is: to abstain from food, drink and sexual intercourse,
-during the daylight hours of Ramadan from fajr until Maghrib to gain Allah’s pleasure
-why does the definition include "To gain Allah's pleasure"
-because those who fast to lose weight or for culture, will not gain any reward.
-actions are by intention

What is the difference between: saum and siyam?
-Saum is for the fast of Ramadan
-Siyam is general fasting

Two adhaan are important in Ramadan
-the ones for fajr and maghrib
-the adhan of fajr says "stop eating"
-the adhan of maghrib says "rush to break the fast"

Who are exempted from fasting?

1. THE MAD MAN
-because he cannot make his intention
-whoever does not make intention before fajr, has no fast (hadith)

2. CHILDREN BENEATH THE AGE OF 10
-you should encourage the children to fast half a day

3. THE ELDERLY
-he doesn’t fast, but he/she feeds a poor person for each day of Ramadan
-Anas ibn Malik would feed poor people when he became too old to fast

4. THE SICK
-there are two types of sick people
-those who are sick temporarily
-and those who are sick permanently
-the one who is sick temporarily makes up the days he/she missed due to their sickness
-when Ramadan is over
-those who are sick permanently: terminally ill
-they feed a poor person for every day missed

5. THE PREGNANT WOMAN
-she falls into the category of those who are permanently ill
-she is supposed to feed a poor person for everyday in Ramadan
-she does not need to make up the days she missed due to pregnancy
-because if she is pregnant for 3 Ramadans,
-how can you expect her to fast consecutively for 90 days
-this is also the fiqh of sahabah
-the sahabah did not tell pregnant women to make up the days they missed
-this is the ruling of ibn Abbas and ibn Umar (r.a)

6. THE BREAST FEEDING MOTHERS

-they have the same ruling as the pregnant woman
-they do not make up the days, they feed a poor person (feed a fasting person)

7. MUJAHIDEEN
-their job is laborious, march sometimes for miles, therefore they are exempted

8. TRAVELLER
-he is exempted but makes it up when Ramadan is over.

9. WOMEN IN MENSES (HAIZ)
-she doesn’t fast, but she makes up the days she missed

10. BLEEDING MOTHERS AFTER CHILD BIRTH
-bleeding usually continues for 40 days (normally)
-if it stops earlier she makes ghusl and fast and prays.

11. PEOPLE WHO FIND THE FAST UNBEARABLE.
-they are allowed to break the fast and make up the days they missed
-Nisa 4:29

...And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. (4:29)

Starting your fast in a state of janaaba: (Sexual / ceremonial impurity)
-due to a wet dream or intercourse
-you are allowed to start the fast in a state of janaaba
-but it is compulsory on them to make ghusl and pray fajr on time

The Duration of the Fasting
-from the adhan of fajr till the adhan of maghrib
-if you live in a society where you have abnormal timings
-where the day is very long in some parts of the world
-in this case you use the time of a country which is normal

KISSING DURING RAMADAN
-kissing is allowed for an old couple
-but makrooh for a young couple
-because young people have raging hormones
-it may lead to intercourse, and will break the fast

Sex after maghrib is permissible
-before maghrib is a major sin
-and one who does so has to pay atonement, kaffara
-he should free a slave
-or fast 2 consecutive months
-or feed 60 poor people

If the wife initiated the intercourse, she has to pay atonement also
-if she didn’t initiate it, then no atonement for her

MASTURBATION DURING RAMADHAN
-the person who masturbates before maghrib has to make up the day
-this is only if he ejaculates
-and only if it took place b4 maghrib

The goofy soofis claim that Albani said that
-if you masturbate in Ramadan your fast isn’t broken!
-maybe it’s a slander against Albani
-because soofis hate him

EATING OR DRINKING DUE TO FORGETFULNESS

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (SAW) said, “If anyone forgets and eats or drinks (by accident while he is fasting), he should complete his fast, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink.” [al-Bukhari (6669) and Muslim (1155)]

Ibn 'Abbas (RA) the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Verily Allah has pardoned [or been lenient with] for me my Ummah : their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and that which they have been forced to do under duress." [Sunan Ibn Majah (3/200) No. 2045, al-Mu’jam al-Kabir al-Tabarani (11/133) No. 11274, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi (7/584) No. 15094, Sunan al-Daraqutni (5/300) No. 4351]

THOSE WHO OVERSLEPT AND MISSED SUHUR
-they will have to go through the day of fasting without suhur
-since suhur is Sunnah mu’akadah not fard

Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: “Eat sahoor, for in sahoor there is blessing.” [al-Bukhari (1923) and Muslim (1095)]

INTENTION FOR FASTING
-rasulullah (saw) said any man who fasted without intending to do so
-has no fast for the day

Hafsah (RA) reported the Prophet (SAW) as saying, “He, who has not formed an intention (to fast) before dawn, has not fasted”. [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/108) No. 730, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/329) No. 2454, Sunan al-Nasa'i (4/196) No. 2331, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/598) No. 1700, Sunan al-Darime (2/12) No. 1698, Musnad Ahmad (6/287) No. 26500]

According to imam Malik you don’t need to make 30 intentions for 30 days
-just one is enough at the beginning
-according to the other fukaha you have to make individual niyyah for every day
-and that is the correct opinion: to make individual niyyah for every day

WHAT BREAKS THE FAST

1. Eating deliberately

2. Drinking deliberately

3. Smoking deliberately

4. Inducing vomit
-if you vomit accidently you didn’t break you fast

5. Menses (Haidh)
-if menses comes 12 midday or asr time you have to make up for the day
-but if after maghrib you don’t make up for the day

6. Nifadh bleeding after child birth

7. Masturbation before maghrib

8. Sexual intercourse deliberately
-if you forgot or accidently did it, it’s not broken

9. DRIPS/SUPPLEMENTS FOR FOOD

10. Apostasy

THINGS THAT DONT BREAK YOUR FAST

1. eat/drink forgetfully

2. Vomit unintentionally

3. Brushing teeth with toothpaste.

4. Swallow saliva and dust or smoke from the kitchen

5. Medical injections

6. Asthmatic pumps
-they are not food, they are a necessity
-hence scholars agree it doesn’t break the fast

7. Ear /eye drops, mascara

8. To have wet dream in day time

9. Thinking about breaking your fast
-the scholars differ on this issue but correct opinion is, it doesn’t break your fast.

10. To do a blood test

WHEN IT’S HARAM TO FAST

1. on a doubtful day (yawmul shak)

2. to fast 10, 11,12,13 of dhul hijjah
-as these are days of eidul adha (eid kabeer)

3. eid ul fitr (1st of shawwal)

SHOULD WE FOLLOW OUR LOCAL SIGHTING OF THE MOON
-those who follow so didn’t do anything wrong
-however more appropriate is to follow Makkah to unite the ummah

TARAWEEH PRAYERS
-taraweeh was oragnised by Umar (r.a)
-before him, people did so but was haphazard; he put them behind 1 imam
-those who do 8 follow Sunnah of rasulullah (saw)
-and those that do 20 follow Sunnah of Umar (r.a)
-they can’t criticize each other however
-Umar did great service to unite the ummah

FASTING THE DAY OF ARAFAH
-those who do so which is the 9th of dhul hijjah
-will have 1 year of their past sins and 1 year of coming sins forgiven

FASTING THE 10th OF MUHARRAM
-to fast the day of Ashura is Sunnah mu’akadah
-one year of your past sins get forgiven

WHEN IS IT MAKROOH TO FAST?

1. Fasting on a Friday as it is the eid of the week
-the only time it’s not is if you are following the pattern of Dawud (a.s)
-but to single out Friday and fast, it becomes makrooh

2. To fast on Saturday and Sunday since it’s the day of the Jews and Christians respectively
-the only time you can fast on Saturday or Sunday is
-if you are following the fast of Dawud (a.s)

3. A woman fasting Sunnah without her husband’s permission

BEST DAYS TO FAST
-Mondays and Thursdays as our deeds are shown to Allah on these days
-Allah forgives all Muslims except grudging Muslims

It was narrated that Aisha (RA) said: "The Prophet (SAW) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays." [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/121) No. 745, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/627) No. 1739, Musnad Ahmad (6/106) No. 24792, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (3/122) No. 2508]

Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Deeds are shown (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/122) No. 747]

MAKING UP DAYS YOU MISSED
-ulama say you should do so before fasting the 6 days of Shawwal
-because fard (fast of Ramadan) overtakes Sunnah (6 days of Shawwal)
-so make up the days you missed before you fast six days of Shawwal

FASTING DAYS YOU OWE TO ALLAH
-if a person owes Allah some days, and dies before he can make them up
-a family member should do it on his/her behalf

TAKING TABLETS TO SUSPEND MENSES FOR RAMADHAN
-ulama say women can do so and it’s not haram since it’s a one off situation

WHEN FASTING OUTSIDE RAMADAN BECOMES FARDH

1. If you took an oath to Allah
-e.g. O Allah if you let me pass my exam I’ll fast 5 days to thank You
-fasting becomes fard in this case

2. Breaking the Wallahi

Allāh will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masākin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allāh makes clear to you His Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:89)

THOSE WHOSE FAST IS REJECTED

THE KAAFIR
-just like his salah

THE MUNAFIQ
-e.g. the spy for kuffar

THE ZINDEEQ (heretic)
-e.g. Louis Farrakhan making up his own religion (Hislam)

THE MURTAD
-apostate e.g. magician

THE MUSHRIK
-e.g. the Beralvis, Shia and extreme soofis
-they are all grave worshippers.
