-418- Hadeeth Number 9: Beware of Awkward Questions

By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal

NOTES typed by AT38 and AT7
Edited and Formatted by AT38/AT7

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say, "What I have forbidden for you, avoid. What I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. For verily, it was only the excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets that destroyed [the nations] who were before you." [Related by al-Bukhari (7288) and Muslim (1337)]

This hadeeth is telling us the importance of obeying the prophet (saw)

He was born in 603 C.E and died 681 C.E
-he died 59 years after the hijrah at age 78
-he is the most quoted human being on earth
-because he narrated most of the hadeeth of the prophet (saw), 5375
-so when you read the books of hadeeth you see ‘an Abi Hurairata radiyallahu anhu qaal'

He was born in Ba'a by the red sea coast in Yemen
-but his religion was not Christianity or Judaism
-his parents were pagans
-because when the prophet (saw) met him
-he told him his name was Abdus Shams (the slave of the sun)
-but the prophet told him you can’t be so
-but your name is Abdur Rahman (the slave of The Most-Merciful)
-so the prophet (saw) gave him 2 names
-Abdur Rahman and Abu Hurairah

His real name is Abdur Rahman ibn Sakhr

His father died when he was very young leaving him to take care of his mother

The next most quoted people after him are Abdullah Ibn Umar, Aisha (r.a) etc.
-his daughter married Saed Ibn Mosayyeb
-he was the top student of Abu Hurairah
-if a hadith chain of narration misses a sahabi but has him, it is accepted

The first part of the hadith shows that hadith is hujjah
-this refutes the Parvezi

Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind) : "If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Aali Imran 3:31)

-this ayah coincides with the hadith we are discussing

...And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Hashr 59:7)

With clear signs and Books (We sent the Messengers). And We have also sent down unto you (O Muhammad SAW) the reminder and the advice (the Qur'an), that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought. (An-Nahl 16:44)

-all of these verses are proving that hadith is hujjah

Narrated By 'Ubada bin As-Samit: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 12, Hadith #723]

-53:3-4 is hujjah that the hadith carries the same power
-in legislating (making haram and halal)
-the Sunnah teaches us how to pray not the Quran!

Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. (An-Najm 53:3)

It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (An-Najm 53:4)

-how do you know it is fard to pay sadaqatul fitr? From the Sunnah

It was narrated from al-Diya’ from Jareer ibn ‘Abd-Allah (RA) that the Prophet (SAW) said: “The month of Ramadan is suspended between heaven and earth and is not taken up to Allah except by zakat al-fitr.” [at-Targhib wat-Tarhib al-Mundhiri (2/97) No. 1653, al-Jami' al-Saghir al-Suyuti (No. 7156)]

-Silk and gold are haram for men- we know this also from Sunnah

Abu Musa Ash’ari reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Wearing silk and gold is forbidden to the men of my Ummah. But (they are) allowed to their women.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/217) No. 1720, Sunan An-Nasa'i (8/161) 5148]

Bara bin Aazib (RA) said that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) was asked about making ablution after eating camel flesh. He said, “Make ablution after that”. Then he was asked about mutton. He said, “It is not necessary after that.” [Sunan Dawud (1/47) No. 184, Sunan Tirmidhi (1/122) No. 81, Sunan Ibn Majah (1/311) No. 494, Musnad Ahmad (4/303) No 18725]

-Allah told us it is haram to marry two sisters at the same time
-but the Sunnah tells us about the niece and aunt

Narrated Um Habiba: I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." He said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for even now I am not your only wife; and the most beloved person to share the good with me is my sister." The Prophet said, "But that is not lawful for me (i.e., to be married to two sisters at a time.)" I said, "O Allah's Apostle! By Allah, we have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah ! Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she would not be lawful for me to marry, for she is my foster niece, for Thuwaiba has suckled me and Abu Salama; so you should neither present your daughters, nor your sisters to me." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number #43]

When the rasul (saw) said "when i command you to do,
-do to the best of your abilities" this coincides with 64:16

So keep your duty to Allah and fear Him as much as you can; listen and obey; and spend in charity, that is better for yourselves. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, then they are the successful ones. (At-Taghabun 64:16)

On the authority of Suhail bin Abi Saleh from his father: ‘A man once asked Abu Hurayrah (RA), ‘What is al-taqwa?” He replied, “Have you ever taken a path filled with thorns?” The man replied, “I have.” Abu Hurayrah asked him, “What did you do?” He replied, “When I saw a thorn I would dodge it or pass over it or behind it.” Abu Hurayrah said, “That is al-taqwa.”’ [al-Zuhd al-Kabir al-Bayhaqi (p350-351) No. 963]

Mutiny is to ask excessive questions
-the Jews are fond of this
-Jews are mu’tazilites so they always ask ridiculous questions
-until they are intellectually convinced

Jews refused to sacrificed the cow when it was said them 'sacrifice a cow'
-this was straight forward and any cow could do
-so Allah (swt) made it difficult for them

And (remember) when Mûsa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allāh commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allāh's Refuge from being among Al-Jāhilûn (the ignorants or the foolish)." (Al-Baqarah 2:67)

They said, "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!" He said, "He says, 'Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but (it is) between the two conditions', so do what you are commanded." (Al-Baqarah 2:68)

They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us its colour." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in its colour, pleasing to the beholders.' " (Al-Baqarah 2:69)

They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us what it is. Verily to us all cows are alike, And surely, if Allāh wills, we will be guided." (Al-Baqarah 2:70)

He [Mûsa (Moses)] said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor water the fields, sound, having no other colour except bright yellow.' " They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it though they were near to not doing it. (Al-Baqarah 2:71)

And (remember) when you killed a man and fell into dispute among yourselves as to the crime. But Allāh brought forth that which you were hiding. (Al-Baqarah 2:72)

-they slaughtered it but were still reluctant because they were not intellectually convinced
-this shows that if a person is not a sincere believer
-he'll always ask ridiculous questions because he is not intellectually convinced

The shaytan was a Mu’tazilite
-this is why he refused to bow down to Adam

And (remember) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam.". And they prostrated except Iblīs (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allāh). (Al-Baqarah 2:34)

Abu Hurayra said, "The Messenger of Allah (SAW), addressed us and said, 'O people. Allah has made the hajj obligatory for you, so go on hajj.' A man said, 'Every year, Messenger of Allah?' He was silent until the man had said it three times. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) then said, 'If I said yes, it would become obligatory and you would be unable to do it.' Then he said, 'Let me be when I refrain from mentioning something to you. Those before you were destroyed by the quantity of their questions and their disagreement with their Prophets. When I command you to do something, then do it as much as you can. When I forbid you to do something, then leave off doing it.'" [Sahih Muslim (2/975) No. 1337]

Or do you want to ask your Messenger (Muhammad Peace be upon him ) as Mûsa (Moses) was asked before (i.e. show us openly our Lord?) And he who changes Faith for disbelief, verily, he has gone astray from the right way. (Al-Baqarah 2:108)

Ja'far Ibn Abdullah narrated: We were with Malik Ibn Anas when a man came to him and said: “O Abu Abdullah (Allah said) 'Ar-Rahman upon the Throne Istawa' (20:5), how was His Istiwa? Imam Malik inclined his head and was silent until the sweat of fever covered his brow, then he looked up and said: "Istiwa is not unknown, the Kayf (how) is uncomprehendable, believing in it is wajib (obligatory), and asking about it is bid'ah (innovation), and I do not think that you are anything but an innovator." Then he ordered that the man be expelled. [Abu-Naeem Al-Asbahani in 'Hilyatul-Awliya wa Tabaqat Al-Asfiya' (Vol. 6, pg. 325-326)]

-some people like to ask questions only Allah knows the answers
-questions like,' when is judgement day?'

They ask you about the Hour (Day of Resurrection): "When will be its appointed time?" Say: "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord (Alone). None can reveal its time but He. Heavy is its burden through the heavens and the earth. It shall not come upon you except all of a sudden." They ask you as if you have a good knowledge of it. Say: "The knowledge thereof is with Allāh (Alone) but most of mankind know not." (Al-A'raf 7:187)

-they even asked Jesus that question

But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (Matthew 24:36) King James Version

-the hypocrites do this because they are searching for a reason to justify their kufr
-and apostate from Islam

O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. But if you ask about them while the Qur'ān is being revealed, they will be made plain to you. Allāh has forgiven that, and Allāh is Oft¬Forgiving, Most Forbearing. (Al-Ma'idah 5:101)

They ask you (O Muhammad ) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allāh makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought." (Al-Baqarah 2:219)

And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: "The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allāh knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property). And if Allāh had wished, He could have put you into difficulties. Truly, Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise." (Al-Baqarah 2:220)

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill treated. I and the guardian of the orphan will be in the Garden like that," indicating his two fingers. [al-Adab al-Mufrad al-Bukhari No. 137]

And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? (Al-Balad 90:10)

But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. (Al-Balad 90:11)

And what will make you know the path that is steep? (Al-Balad 90:12)

(It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.). (Al-Balad 90:13)

Abdullah Ibn `Amr Ibn al-`Aas said: "We were with the Prophet when a youth came and said: 'May I kiss (my wife) while I am fasting?' He (the Prophet) said: "No". Then an old man came and said: 'May I kiss (my wife) while I am fasting?' He said: "Yes". So we began looking at one another, so Allah's Messenger said: "The old man is able to control himself". [Musnad Ahmad (2/220) No. 7054, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/312) No. 2387]

-the rasul (saw) used to kiss Aisha (r.a) while fasting
-but this is only for old men not young men
-if a shaikh is saying democracy is shura, he is a milkshake not a sincere shaikh
-do not trust him with your deen and he should not speak in your masajid

On many occasions, while shaikh was in Africa, he was quizzed about his aqeeda
-before he was allowed to speak in the masjid

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. The ruler is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock; the man is the shepherd of his family members and is responsible for them; the woman is the shepherd of her husband’s house and children and is responsible for them; the slave is the shepherd of his master’s wealth and is responsible for it. Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.” [al-Bukhari #853 and Muslim #1829]

-this was what the Jew did to the rasul (saw) before embracing Islam
-the rasul answered all question and he embraced Islam

A man will be thrown in hell for showing off with knowledge

Abu Hurayra said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say, 'The first of people to be judged on the Day of Rising will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought and will be informed of the blessings he had and will acknowledge them. Allah will say, "What did you do with them?" He will say, "I fought for You until I was martyred." Allah will say, "You lie. Rather you fought so it would be said, 'A bold man!' And so it was said." Then the command will be given and he will be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire. There will also be a man who studied knowledge and taught it and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought and informed of his blessings which he will acknowledge. Allah will say, "What did you do with them?" He will say, "I studied knowledge and taught it and I recited the Qur'an for You." He will say, "You lie. Rather you studied so that it would be said, 'A scholar!' and you recited so that it would be said, 'He is a reciter!' And so it was said." Then the command will be given and he will be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire. There will also be a man to whom Allah gave a lot of wealth and all sorts of property. He will be brought and informed of his blessings which he will acknowledge. Allah will say, "What did you do with them?" He will say, "There was no path in which You like spending to be done but that I spent in it for You." He will say, "You lie. Rather you did it so that it would be said, 'He is generous.' and so it was said." Then the command will be given and he will be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.'" [Sahih Muslim (3/1513) No. 1905]

The people of the Scripture (Jews) ask you to cause a book to descend upon them from heaven. Indeed they asked Mûsa (Moses) for even greater than that, when they said: "Show us Allāh in public," but they were struck with thunder clap and lightning for their wickedness. Then they worshipped the calf even after clear proofs, evidences, and signs had come to them. (Even) so We forgave them. And We gave Mûsa (Moses) a clear proof of authority. (An-Nisa 4:153)

-The kuffaar in Makkah challenged the rasul (saw) to make the moon split

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad SAW to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). (Al-Qamar 54:1)

And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: "This is continuous magic." (Al-Qamar 54:2)

-The people of Saleh (a.s) were Arabs and challenged him as well

Thamûd (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islāmic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin). (Ash-Shams 91:11)

When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). (Ash-Shams 91:12)

But the Messenger of Allāh [Sālih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allāh! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" (Ash-Shams 91:13)

Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! (Ash-Shams 91:14)

And He (Allāh) feared not the consequences thereof. (Ash-Shams 91:15)

-people are fond of challenging others
-whenever a man wants to be a kafir
-there is no miracle that you can give to make him believe

Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): "In what (condition) were you?" They reply: "We were weak and oppressed on earth." They (angels) say: "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination! (An-Nisa 4:97)

It almost bursts up with fury. Every time a group is cast therein, its keeper will ask: "Did no warner come to you?" (Al-Mulk 67:8)

-the angels ask rhetorical questions to people on judgement day

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allāh (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Tāghût[] (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Tāghût besides Allāh)." Then of them were some whom Allāh guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth). (An-Nahl 16:36)

Hypocrites love asking sarcastic questions

And whenever there comes down a Sûrah (chapter from the Qur'ān), some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice. (At-Tawbah 9:124)

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt, and they die while they are disbelievers. (At-Tawbah 9:125)

-when you try to ridicule a surah you are trying to ridicule Allah

Verily, Allāh is not ashamed to set forth a parable even of a mosquito or so much more when it is bigger (or less when it is smaller) than it. And as for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord, but as for those who disbelieve, they say: "What did Allāh intend by this parable?" By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. And He misleads thereby only those who are Al-Fāsiqûn (the rebellious, disobedient to Allāh). (Al-Baqarah 2:26)

-Allah used many animals to give examples in the Quran
-the kuffaar always ask why is HE using these animals

Fear Allah to the best of your ability and hope for the best

So keep your duty to Allāh and fear Him as much as you can; listen and obey; and spend in charity, that is better for yourselves. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, then they are the successful ones. (At-Taghabun 64:16)

-shaytan may give you evil whisper and make you entertain bad ideas about Allah

The best answer for this question is 2:134
-Allah won't ask you the fitna between Ali and Aisha or with Mu’awiya

That was a nation who has passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do. (Al-Baqarah 2:134)

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said “A sign of one’s excellence in his Islam, is ignoring what does not concern him.” [Tirmidhi 2318, Ibn e Majah 3976, Ahmed 1737, Al-Muwatta 1604]

How can you ask how much a person is earning?!
-or whether his wife was a virgin on the wedding night

A sister used to come to the room and ask brothers if they are going for jihad and where to
-is very easy to know a spy; they always ask incriminating questions
-these questions are called entrapment
-the person asking the questions is called an agent provocateur
-the kuffaar are saying that they were able to entrap Imam Anwar Al Awlaki (r.a)
-by using a white kaafir to trap him
-the man planted on the imam was a man who spoke radical to win his trust

Had We willed, We could have shown them to you, and you should have known them by their marks, but surely, you will know them by the tone of their speech! And Allāh knows all your deeds. (Muhammad 47:30)

-it is easy to know the munafiq because he always exposes himself when he speaks

O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allāh, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought. (Al-Hajj 22:73)

If you are in a gathering of the NOI, you can ask a shaikh about creation

-also you can ask about the whereabouts of Allah if among goofi soofis

it is narrated that the companion Mu`awiyah ibn al-Hakam, (RA) slapped his servant girl who used to tend his sheep, and as a result went to the Prophet (SAWS) and asked what should be done as an atonement for having slapped her. The Prophet replied, "Bring her to me" so Mu`awiyah brought her to the Prophet. The Prophet then asked her, "Where is Allah?" and she replied "Above the Sky" then the Prophet asked her, "Who am I?" and she replied, "You are Allah’s Messenger", so the Prophet said, "Free her, for verily she is a true believer." [Sahih Muslim (1/381) No. 537]

The Most Beneficent (Allāh) Istawā (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). (Ta-Ha 20:5)

Ali (RA) narrated: We did not cease to doubt punishment in the grave till the surah was revealed: Your rivalry in the accumulation of wealth diverts your minds. (102:1 etc.) [Sunan Tirmidhi (Vol. 5 pg. 447) No. 3355]

The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you, (At-Takathur 102:1)

Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die). (At-Takathur 102:2)
-do not forget angel Gibril asked questions about Islam to teach us the deen

on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who said: One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journey were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down in front of the Prophet (SAW), with his knees touching against the Prophet’s (SAW) and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs he said, "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam." The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "Islam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform prayers, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadhan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so." He said, "You have spoken rightly"; and we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He [the man] then said, "Tell me about iman." The Prophet (SAW) said, "It is to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny (qadr), both the good and the evil of it." He said, "You have spoken rightly." He [the man] said, "Then tell me about ihsan." The Prophet (SAW) said, "It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then (knowing that) truly He sees you." He said, "Then tell me about the Hour." The Prophet (SAW) said, "The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner." He said, "Then tell me about its signs." The Prophet (SAW) said, "That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefooted, naked destitute shepherds competing in constructing lofty buildings." Then he [the man] left, and I stayed for a time. Then he [the Prophet (SAW)] said, "O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "It was Jibreel, who came to teach you your religion." It was related by Muslim.

Assalamu alaikum, sometimes brothers that i don't know personally ask me for my number after adding me on Facebook after a week. I never give my number to anyone because I’m not stupid. Am I too paranoid for doing this or right?

-you can’t be too paranoid
-there are too many hypocrites and spies around
-the one who set up Anwar Awlaki (RH) spoke jihad
-do not give money to people you met on the internet

I know some brothers who pray the prayer of the traveller because they do not see themselves as permanent residents of darul harb London, is this permissible?

-this is not permissible
-if you are born in London you have to pray normally
-they want to exploit the deen
-someone lives off of food stamps and claims to be the caliph
-you can't use darul harb as an excuse to say you are a traveller
-they make up their own fiqh

They don’t understand the rules of living in darul harb
-they say all the girls in darul harb are their concubines
-they buy goods with credit card fraud
-they love the shaikhs that gives them this *fatawa*

A man took a girl as concubine in UK and she cried rape
-he was sentenced to prison
-you can't take concubines until you subdue the land

It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land... (Al-Anfal 8:67)

I have been trying to get the brothers and sisters to start another masjid with the correct aqeeda, being that in my area there are tabligh, salafi, murji and so forth. They agree that these masjids do not have the correct aqeeda but they give excuse not to start a masjid with correct aqeeda what should I do?

-if they are reluctant to start a masjid you can pray with the tabligh
-the salafis are the Jews of the ummah

-the salafi will not accept hujjah

Spying in Brixton (UK) :

-they spy on the Muslims
-in UK they have two salafi masjids that make takfeer on each other
-refusing to pray janaza on each other, this is takfeer
