THE WIVES OF THE PROPHET (SAW) :: MAIMUNA (ra)

By Shaykh Abdullah Faisal
PalTalk – May 04, 2013

Maimuna (ra)
-She was considered the one who had no conflict with any of the wives
-this was her good character and taqwa
-like all the wives an incident happened that led to their marriage
-she was a noble woman of Quraish but we don't have an incident to this effect
-she was the one who proposed to the Rasul (saw)
-in the 7th year after hijrah
-she was 36 years and he was 60 years
-and she only spent 3 years with the Prophet [pbuh]
-Mother of the believers Maimuna bint al-Harith

Her Family:

She was the mother of the believers Maimuna daughter of Al Harith ibn Hazan ibn Bujair, ibn al-Hazm, ibn Rubwaiba ibn Abdullah, ibn Hilal, ibn Amer, ibn Sa’sa’a Al-Hilaliyya.

Her mother was Hind daughter of Auof ibn Zuhair ibn AlHarith ibn Hamata ibn Humair. She was known as the noblest old woman on earth.

Her sisters were Lubaba AlKobra (Umm Alfadl) and Lubaba As-soghra and her half-sisters were Asmaa bint Omais and Salma bint Omais

Her sister Umm AlFadl was the wife of Al-Abbas (the Prophet’s uncle). Her sister Asmaa bint Omais married Jafaar ibn Abu Talib (the Prophet’s cousin and a famous Muslim martyr) and then Abu Bakr As-seddique then Ali Ibn Abu Talib (the two famous companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, and both became Muslim Caliphs Her sister Salma bint Omais was the wife of Allah's Lion Hamza Ibn Abd Elmutallib (the Prophet’s uncle and the leader of martyrs). She was from a noble family from the Quraish tribe.

Her marriage:

Maimuna or Barra as she was then called, yearned to marry the Prophet. She went to her sister, Umm al Fadl to talk to her about that and she, in turn, spoke to her husband, al-Abbas. Al-Abbas immediately went to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, with Maimuna's offer of marriage to him and her proposal was accepted.

When the good news reached her, she was on a camel, and she immediately got off the camel and said, "The camel and what is on it is for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."

They were married in the month of Shawwal in 7 AH just after the Muslims of Madina were permitted to visit Makkah under the terms of the treaty of Hudaybiyya to perform Umra.

Allah Almighty sent the following ayah about this:

Any believing woman who dedicates herself to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her, that is only for thee and not for the believers. (Al-Ahzab : 50)

The Wedding:

After the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had stayed for three days as stated in the Hudaybiya agreement, the people of Quraish asked him to leave. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asked them to allow him to wed among them in Quraish and he would invite them to the wedding feast but they refused harshly. The polytheists of Quraish actually feared the Prophet’s stay among them because of the impact he has on the hearts, so they wanted him to leave as soon as possible. The wedding was held in a place called Sarf ten miles from Makkah, in the month of Shawwal in 7 AH (After Hijra)

In the Prophet’s House:

The Prophet gave her the name, Maimuna, meaning "blessed", because they were married after the “blessed” occasion of his peaceful visit to Makkah after seven years of emigrating to Medina. Maimuna lived with the Prophet for just over three years, until his death. She was obviously very good natured and got on well with everyone, and no quarrel or disagreement with any of the Prophet's other wives has been related about her. A'isha, mother of the believers may Allah be pleased with her, said about her, "Among us, she had the most fear of Allah and did the most to maintain ties of kinship. It is from her merits that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, testified that she and her sisters Maymouna, Umm Alfadl, Salma and Asmaa are the believing sisters "

It was in her room that the Prophet first began to feel the effects of what became his final illness and asked the permission of his wives to stay in A'isha's room while it lasted.

Her Knowledge:

She was a knowledgeable woman, she would teach Muslims Sunnah for example her nephew Ibn Abbas (who was one of the most knowledgeable Muslims in religious issues) visited her once with his hair uncombed, so she asked him why he didn’t comb his hair, he said that his wife was menstruating. She told him the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would enter the house of his menstruating wife and would lean on her or sit on her lap and recite verses from the holly Quran.

She once knew that her nephew would not sleep in the same bed beside his wife when she was menstruating so she told him that this was not what the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would do when any of his wives was menstruating It is narrated that once one of her relatives visited her and from his smell she knew that he was drinking so she ordered him to admit his guilt and accept getting whipped for drinking or he would never visit her Maimuna, Mother of the believers may Allah be pleased with her reported many Hadiths from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him

Sheikh Ath-Thahabi said that she reported seven hadiths in the two Sahihs, another hadith was reported on her authority in Al-Bukhari alone, five in Muslim alone so the sum of the hadiths reported on her authority is 13 hadiths.

Her death:

Maymouna, Mother of the believers may Allah be pleased with her died in 51 AH Ibn Ataa said, “When Maymunah died, I went out with Ibn Abbas who said, “Do not shake her and be tender with her she is my mother.”

Aisha, Mother of the believers may Allah be pleased with her said when Maymunah, Mother of the believers may Allah be pleased with her, died; “Oh Maimuna passed away. By Allah she was pious and kept good terms with her kinship ties. May Allah have mercy on her. She was buried in Saraf (the place where she and the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, wed) according to her will.
