By the dawn; (Al-Fajr 89:1)

By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hījjah), (Al-Fajr 89:2)

And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allāh). (Al-Fajr 89:3)

And by the night when it departs. (Al-Fajr 89:4)

-Allah swears by fajr, it is the most barakah salah
-it has 2 Sunnah that the prophet (saw) never left off
-fajr is the Morning Prayer
-Allah swears by the even and odd numbers
-the even is the 4 rakat salat and the odd is Maghrib

Maghrib is the witr for the day
-the 2nd tafseer states that the even number is the creation because
-Allah creates in pairs, and the odd is Allah
-the 3rd tafseer: the even is the 10th of dhul hijjah
-the day on which the animal is slaughtered
-and the odd is the 9th, the day of Arafat

Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "No virtuous actions done during any ten days are better liked by Allah than the actions done on these days (the first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijja)." They said, "Messenger of Allah, not even jihad in the way of Allah?" He said, "Not even jihad in the way of Allah, except for a man who goes out putting his life and property in danger and returns with nothing." [Sahih Bukhari (2/20) No. 969, Musnad Ahmad (1/346) No. 3228, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/325) No. 2438, Sunan Tirmidhi (3/121-122) No. 757, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/620) No. 1727, Sunan al-Darime (2/41) No. 1773]

Ibn ‘Umar (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) said: "There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (La ilaha ill-Allah), Takbeer (Allahu akbar) and Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah)." [Musnad Ahmad (2/131) No. 6154]

-there are 3 opinions when Allah swears by the odd and even, these were mentioned
-when the flood of Noah (a.s) came, everything went in pairs on the ship
-the purpose of the night is for rest
-the purpose of the day is for you to work

There is indeed in them (the above oaths) a sufficient proof for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! (Al-Fajr 89:5)

What is the meaning of this word (Hijr)?
-it means to restrict a person
-if you are a fool and squander your wealth a judge can put a restriction on your spending
-you wealth is sacred

These men who are hijr are grounded in ilm and taqwa
-the taqwa stops them from dabbling in haraam and disgracing themselves
-if you fast on Arafat one year of your sins are forgiven

The aql stops you from doing foolish things
-this is why the aql is called hijr
-the aql stops you destroying yourself spiritually, physically etc.

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is All-Mighty, Oft¬Forgiving. (Fatir 35:28)

The people of Ad were tall and proud
-the tribe was called Iram and they did not thank Allah
-they were as if they did not need Allah
-they worshipped idols and shunned Allah
-prophet Hud was sent to them
-he told them to show gratefulness
-this shows Allah even blesses the kuffaar

And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allāh is a mighty reward. (Al-Anfal 8:28)

-Allah sent a wind

"I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord, and I am a trustworthy adviser (or well¬wisher) for you. (Al-A'raf 7:68)

"Do you wonder that there has come to you a Reminder (and an advice) from your Lord through a man from amongst you that he may warn you? And remember that He made you successors after the people of Nûh (Noah), and increased you amply in stature. So remember the graces (bestowed upon you) from Allāh, so that you may be successful." (Al-A'raf 7:69)

They said: "You have come to us that we should worship Allāh Alone and forsake that which our fathers used to worship. So bring us that wherewith you have threatened us if you are of the truthful." (Al-A'raf 7:70)

(Hûd) said: "Torment and wrath have already fallen on you from your Lord. Dispute you with me over names which you have named - you and your fathers, with no authority from Allāh? Then wait, I am with you among those who wait." (Al-A'raf 7:71)
So We saved him and those who were with him by a Mercy from Us, and We cut the roots of those who belied Our Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and they were not believers. (Al-A'raf 7:72)

These were the descendants of Noah
-they were like giants
-these are the words Hud said to them
-expect the kuffar to go astray where the names of Allah are concerned
-only the Muslims use the correct names of Allah

Not all the people of Ad were kuffar
-some abandoned idols and went with Hud
-Allah said when the wind came the destruction was so devastating,
-the men lay dead like the trunks of trees
-this was not a one day wind
-it was 7 nights and 8 days in succession

The Reality (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)! (Al-Haqqah 69:1)

What is the Reality? (Al-Haqqah 69:2)

And what will make you know what the Reality is? (Al-Haqqah 69:3)

Thamûd and 'Ad people denied the Qāri'ah [the striking Hour (of Judgement)]! (Al-Haqqah 69:4)

As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by the awful cry! (Al-Haqqah 69:5)

And as for 'Ad, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind; (Al-Haqqah 69:6)

Which Allāh imposed on them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you could see men lying overthrown (destroyed), as if they were hollow trunks of date-palms! (Al-Haqqah 69:7)

Do you see any remnants of them? (Al-Haqqah 69:8)

Al qari 'ah is another name for judgement day
-imagine a scene after a hurricane, this is how Ad was

Allah mentioned another Arab people
-these people were Arabs
-the Quran is for all mankind
-The people of Thamud dug out homes from the rocks

Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? (Al-Fajr 89:6)

Who were very tall like lofty pillars, (Al-Fajr 89:7)

The like of which were not created in the land? (Al-Fajr 89:8)

And (with) Thamûd (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? (Al-Fajr 89:9)

The people of Thamud asked their prophet Salih (r.a) to produce a camel out of the rock
-they loved camels
-he made them swear they would believe if he asked Allah to do this
-this was a special camel
-it could give milk to everyone in the city
-they complained that the camel was too big and frightening it

Salih told them that their camels would drink on alternative days
-the camel was hujjah against but they hated it
-they plotted to kill it and then they tried to kill Salih
-Salih warned them against hurting the camel of Allah
-they killed the camel and Allah destroyed them
-this was because of their sins

Thamûd (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islāmic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin). (Ash-Shams 91:11)

When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). (Ash-Shams 91:12)

But the Messenger of Allāh [Sālih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allāh! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" (Ash-Shams 91:13)

Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! (Ash-Shams 91:14)

And He (Allāh) feared not the consequences thereof. (Ash-Shams 91:15)

-the ones who did the crime and the ones who stood by and remained silent,
-and did not speak out, all were punished
-Ad and Thamud are mentioned together because they are similar
-they have many things in common
-the wealth caused them to become arrogant
-they forgot Allah

And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? (Al-Fajr 89:10)

Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allāh). (Al-Fajr 89:11)

And made therein much mischief. (Al-Fajr 89:12)

So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. (Al-Fajr 89:13)

Allah mentioned Pharaoh also
-what is awtad? It means he had soldiers that were strong
-they were fiercely loyal to him
-Pharaoh wanted to kill Musa (a.s), his adopted son
-the Pharaoh was loyal also to his soldiers
-the new Pharaoh, America; people think it is an honour to be in their army
-the other tafseer for awtad is the Pharaoh used to crucified his enemies with nail
-he was the first to start the practice of crucifying people

Then he gathered his people and cried aloud, (An-Nazi'at 79:23)

Saying: "I am your lord, most high", (An-Nazi'at 79:24)

He made a claim even shaytan never did
-he killed the boys and allowed the girls to live
-he saw in a dream that a fire came from Jerusalem and destroyed his kingdom
-he tried to change the qadr of Allah
-even his own soldiers complained he was killing too many kids
-so he decided that he would kill one year and leave the other
-so the year he stopped Haroon was born
-and the year he was to kill Musa (a.s) was born
-the Jews in Israel are worse than the Pharaoh and Hitler
-the Jews in Palestine deny the Palestinians clean water to drink
-there is no good in Jews
-they killed prophets

Allah (swt) said the people of Ad, Salih, and the pharaoh
-all had the same characteristics
-wealth, etc. and this shows you that Allah gives wealth to both those
-whom He loves and whom He doesn't
-but He only gives Hidaya to those whom He loves
-so being rich is not a sign that Allah loves you
-but If you are guided that means He loves you
-the three men who made AIDS famous were all rich
-they were homosexuals who had a disgraceful end

The other lesson is that power with no hikma (wisdom) and taqwa is a recipe for disaster
-all these had power but no hikma and taqwa
-Hitler had power but no hikma
-so he opened many war fronts
-and hence he lost in the end
-the same as the Pharaoh, Nimrod, Saddam Hussein, Bush, Blair etc.
-all these had power but no wisdom

The Pharaoh also made the magicians to work against the people
-so when these people believed in Allah and the Pharaoh threatened to crucify them
-but his punishment and reward is short lived and limited to the dunya
-but Allah's reward and punishment extends to the hereafter

He killed them and they died as shaheed
-they knew that what Musa (a.s) brought was not magic
-and they believed and refused to apostate

The wicked scholars today are like the magicians of the Pharaoh
-Pharaoh knew the people feared magicians so he used them
-and the apostate leaders know that we fear Allah
-so they use the wicked scholars to pass dodgy fatwas
-but the magicians are better than them since they made taubah when they saw the haqq
-but these wicked scholars die on their kufr and hypocrisy

So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. (Al-Fajr 89:13)

Natural disasters are as a result of our sins

Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allāh, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself. And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as a Messenger to mankind, and Allāh is Sufficient as a Witness. (An-Nisa 4:79)

-because when good comes is from Allah and when bad comes is from your own doing

Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). (Al-Fajr 89:14)

-this ayah tells you that Allah's knowledge is everywhere but not HIM
-not a leave falls from a tree but Allah knows it

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." (Al-Fajr 89:15)

-Man says he is honoured because your wealth is your honour
-if you go to the American embassy with a passport from a poor country
-they ask a million questions before they give you the visa
-but otherwise they will give you the visa with a few questions
-poverty breeds sins like prostitution
-this is the only reason why they practice prostitution

Shaitān (Satan) threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahshā (evil deeds, illegal sexual intercourse, sins etc.); whereas Allāh promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allāh is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah 2:268)

But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" (Al-Fajr 89:16)

-poverty is a disgrace
-Luqman said that the most bitter thing in life he have ever tasted is poverty

Luqman to his son, he said: “My son! I have carried grass-hoppers and cast-iron but I have never seen anything heavier (to bear) than a bad neighbour, and I have tasted all the bitterness, but I have never tasted anything more bitter than poverty.” [Ibn Abi Shaybah in 'Musannaf' (7/74) No. 34296 and al-Bayhaqi in 'Shu'ab al-Eman' (12/101) No. 9108]

And among mankind is he who worships Allāh as it were, upon the very edge (i.e. in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islām). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss. (Al-Hajj 22:11)

-they turn back on their heels as apostates

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill treated. I and the guardian of the orphan will be in the Garden like that," indicating his two fingers. [al-Adab al-Mufrad al-Bukhari No. 137]

Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! (Al-Fajr 89:17)

And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskīn (the poor)! (Al-Fajr 89:18)

And you devour inheritance all with greed, (Al-Fajr 89:19)

And you love wealth with much love! (Al-Fajr 89:20)

-you have to share the wealth to enjoy it
-if you can put a smile on a starving child you are enjoying your wealth

And when it is said to them: "Spend of that with which Allāh has provided you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe: "Shall we feed those whom, if Allāh willed, He (Himself) would have fed? You are only in a plain error." (Ya-Sin 36:47)

-kuffar don’t even want to look after their parents
-they put them in old age homes
-some don't embrace Islam because they don’t want to give in charity
-they say people are poor because Allah willed it
-some kill their parents for inheritance
-some go to Philippines to marry and kill the girl for insurance
-this is why life insurance is haraam
-people kill you for it
-they are greedy

They love wealth violently
-vehement and fervent in the love of wealth
-they believe in ‘the end justifies the means’ for them

Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, (Al-Fajr 89:21)

The earth will be destroyed

And what will make you know what it is? (Al-Qari'ah 101:10)

(It is) a hot blazing Fire! (Al-Qari'ah 101:11)

It is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about, (Al-Qari'ah 101:4)

And the mountains will be like carded wool, (Al-Qari'ah 101:5)

And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, (Al-Fajr 89:22)

And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? (Al-Fajr 89:23)

-if you can’t remember you will deny it
-Allah says He will make you remember

So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (Az-Zalzalah 99:7)

And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (Az-Zalzalah 99:8)

He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" (Al-Fajr 89:24)

So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. (Al-Fajr 89:25)

And none will bind as He will bind. (Al-Fajr 89:26)

-man will say he failed to prepare for this day
-he will wish he did good deeds
-judgement day will be a day of regret

"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! (Al-Furqan 25:28)

Verily, We have warned you of a near torment, the Day when man will see that (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever will say: "Woe to me! Would that I were dust!" (An-Naba 78:40)

(It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! (Al-Fajr 89:27)

"Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! (Al-Fajr 89:28)

"Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, (Al-Fajr 89:29)

"And enter you My Paradise!" (Al-Fajr 89:30)

-Allah Himself will say to the believers come back to your lord,
-pleased with you and you with Him

Allāh will say: "This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise) - they shall abide therein forever. Allāh is pleased with them and they with Him. That is the great success (Paradise). (Al-Ma'idah 5:119)
