Bismillah…

The word Masad means a rope or palm fiber

Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab (an uncle of the Prophet), and perish he! (Al-Masad 111:1)

His wealth and his children (etc.) will not benefit him! (Al-Masad 111:2)

He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames! (Al-Masad 111:3)

And his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of Sadan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) , or use to slander him). (Al-Masad 111:4)

In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad (palm fibre). (Al-Masad 111:5)

-this surah was revealed in Makkah
-Abu Lahab used to slander the rasul (saw)
-and his wife would place thorns in the path of the rasul

On the authority of Abdur Rahman bin Abi Az-Zinad from his father that a man called Rabi'ah bin 'Abbad from the tribe of Bani Ad-Dil, who was a man of pre-Islamic ignorance who accepted Islam, said to him, "I saw the Prophet in the time of pre-Islamic ignorance in the market of Dhul-Majaz and he was saying, "O people! Say there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and you will be successful." The people were gathered around him and behind him there was a man with a bright face, squint (or cross) eyes and two braids in his hair. He was saying, "Verily, he is an apostate (from our religion) and a liar!" This man was following him (the Prophet) around wherever he went. So, I asked who was he and they (the people) said, "This is his uncle, Abu Lahab." [Musnad Ahmad (4/341) No. 19026]

ASBAB AN NUZOOR

The rasul (saw) called the pagans of Makkah and asked
-if he told them that there was an army
-waiting for them behind the valley would they believe
-they said yes because he never lied even when joking
-the people of Makkah were thinking about
-what he told them about him being sent by Allah
-but Abu Lahab busted and cursed him

Abu Lahab was fluent in Arabic and was an Arab
-he was from the most noble tribe but yet neither of these saved him from kufr
-because Allah (swt) guides whom He wills
-so when you debate an Arab with wrong aqeeda
-he claims he knows better because he speaks Arabic
-but he is just like Abu Lahab

He was from the rasul's family biologically
-but he is not ahlul bait
-just like in the case of Nuh (a.s) with his son
-Allah told him he is not of his family

He said: "O Nuh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorants." (Hud 11:46)

-so him being from the family doesn't make him ahlul bait
-so there are many Arabs who believe in democracy and
-don't believe that Allah (swt) is on the Arsh
-always remind them of Abu Lahab and you should not soften with them

O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh against them, their abode is Hell, - and worst indeed is that destination. (At-Tawbah 9:73)

-like Allah told you in surah Taubah
-because they seek to mislead others and play the race card

So Allah promised him the hellfire in spite of him being an Arab and from Quraish
-so your status in society can't save you from the wrath of Allah

Another lesson is that the Quran made a prediction

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), that the Prophet (SAW) said: Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his needs in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever shields [or hides the misdeeds of] a Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah will aid His slave so long as he aids his brother. And whoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather together in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that sakeenah (tranquility) descends upon them, and mercy envelops them, and the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them amongst those who are with Him. And whoever is slowed down by his actions, will not be hastened forward by his lineage. [Sahih Muslim (4/2074) No. 2699, Sunan Tirmidhi (5/195) No. 2945, Sunan Ibn Majah (1/152) No. 225, Musnad Ahmad (2/252) No. 7421]

-that him and his wife will never embrace Islam
-and will forever be in the hellfire
-his real name was Abdul Uzzah bin Abdul Mutallib
-you should give your child a good name that is one of his rights over you

Narrated By Abu Darda': The Prophet (SAW) said: "On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and by your father's names, so give yourselves good names." [Sunan Abu Dawood (4/287) No. 4948, Sunan al-Darime (2/380) No. 2694, Musnad Ahmad (5/194) No. 21739]

Ibn ‘Umar (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The most beloved of your names to Allah are ‘Abdullah and ‘Abdur-Rahman.” [Sahih Muslim (3/1682) No. 2132, Sunan Tirmidhi (5/133) No. 2834, Sunan Abu Dawood (4/287) No. 4949, Sunan Ibn Majah (4/672) No. 3728, Sunan al-Darime (2/380) No. 2695, Musnad Ahmad (2/24) No. 4774]

Abu Wahb al-Jushami (RA), who was a companion of the Prophet (SAW), narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Give your children the names of Prophets, and the most beloved of names to Allah are ‘Abdullah and ‘Abdur-Rahman, and the most truthful are Haarith and Hammaam [these names both refer to one who is always doing something, whether good or bad], and the worst are Harb and Murrah [meaning ‘war’ and ‘bitterness’ respectively].” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4/287) No. 4950, al-Bukhari in 'Adab al-Mufrad' No. 814 and Bayhaqi in 'al-Sunan al-Kubra' (9/514) No. 19307]

-his wealth and his kids won't benefit him
-Allah said this because he used to make a mockery of the warnings the rasul gave him
-he said his wealth will bail him out from the hellfire
-he used to sell idols in his shop that was why he was vehemently against tauheed
-shirk is a million dollar business

Ibn 'Abbas (RA) narrated: When the Verse: 'And warn your tribe of near kindred.' (Ash-Shu'ara 26:214) was revealed. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) went out, and when he had ascended As-Safa mountain, he shouted, "O Sabahah!" The people said, "Who is that?" "Then they gathered around him, whereupon he said, "Do you see? If I inform you that cavalrymen are proceeding up the side of this mountain, will you believe me?" They said, "We have never heard you telling a lie." Then he said, "I am a plain warner to you of a coming severe punishment." Abu Lahab said, "May you perish! You gathered us only for this reason? " Then Abu Lahab went away. So the "Surat:-ul-Lahab" 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab!' (Al-Masad 111:1) was revealed. [al-Bukhari (4971) and Muslim (208) the wording is from al-Bukhari]

-he made it his job to slander the rasul and would walk around with him wherever he goes
-to refute what he was saying

His wife was the sister of Abu Sufyan
-her name was Umm Jamil Bint Harb
-in some narrations it is said that she had one eye
-she supported her husband vehemently
-and used to deliberately put thorns in the path of the rasul (saw) to hurt him
-she came with a big rock to hit the rasul when the surah was revealed

And when you (Muhammad SAW) recite the Qur'an, We put between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter, an invisible veil (or screen their hearts, so they hear or understand it not). (Al-Isra 17:45)

-but the rasul read surah 17:45 and he was screened from her

Ibn Abi Hatim said that his father and Abu Zurah both said that Abdullah bin Az-Zubayr Al-Humaydi told them that Sufyan informed them that Al-Walid bin Kathir related from Ibn Tadrus who reported that Asma' bint Abi Bakr said, "When تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ (Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab and perish he!) was revealed, the one-eyed Umm Jamil bint Harb came out wailing, and she had a stone in her hand. She was saying, 'He criticizes our father, and his religion is our scorn, and his command is to disobey us.' The Messenger of Allah was sitting in the Masjid (of the Ka'bah) and Abu Bakr was with him. When Abu Bakr saw her he said, 'O Messenger of Allah! She is coming and I fear that she will see you.'
The Messenger of Allah replied, إِنَّهَا لَنْ تَرَانِيVerily, she will not see me.
Then he recited some of the Qur'an as a protection for himself.
This is as Allah says,
And when you recite the Qur'an, We put between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter, an invisible veil. (17:45)
So she advanced until she was standing in front of Abu Bakr and she did not see the Messenger of Allah. She then said, 'O Abu Bakr! Verily, I have been informed that your friend is making defamatory poetry about me.' Abu Bakr replied, 'Nay! By the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah) he is not defaming you.' So she turned away saying, 'Indeed the Quraysh know that I am the daughter of their leader."'

Abu Lahab was so firm with his slander that he used to sit at the gate of Makkah
-and tell people to stay away from the rasul
-so Allah revealed surah 104 because of his slander

Woe to every slanderer and backbiter. (Al-Humuzah 104:1)

Who has gathered wealth and counted it, (Al-Humuzah 104:2)

He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever! (Al-Humuzah 104:3)

Nay! Verily, he will be thrown into the crushing Fire. (Al-Humuzah 104:4)

And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is? (Al-Humuzah 104:5)

The fire of Allah, kindled, (Al-Humuzah 104:6)

Which leaps up over the hearts, (Al-Humuzah 104:7)

Verily, it shall be closed in on them, (Al-Humuzah 104:8)

In pillars stretched forth (i.e. they will be punished in the Fire with pillars, etc.). (Al-Humuzah 104:9)

His wealth and his children (etc.) will not benefit him! (Al-Masad 111:2)

-in both surah 104 and 111, Allah spoke about wealth
-people think their wealth can take them above Islam
-but the Pharaoh had wealth yet he was not successful

Ibn Masood (RA) narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: "Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: (1) A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. (2) A man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Qur'an and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others." [al-Bukhari (1409) and Muslim (816)]

Ibn 'Umar (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur'an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day." [al-Bukhari (7529) and Muslim (815)]

-but people like Abu Bakr (r.a) and Abdurrahman Bin Auf (r.a)
-they made their wealth for good

The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you, (At-Takathur 102:1)

Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die). (At-Takathur 102:2)

Nay! You shall come to know! (At-Takathur 102:3)

Again, Nay! You shall come to know! (At-Takathur 102:4)

And his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of Sadan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet (Peace be upon him), or use to slander him). (Al-Masad 111:4)

In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad (palm fibre). (Al-Masad 111:5)

-Abu Lahab used to ask how they can exchange the idols that they see
-for a God they can't see
-if he couldn't make money in Islam then he doesn't want anything to do with it
-because he made money from selling the idols

THE 11 LESSONS FROM THE TAFSEER OF SURAH MASAD

1. EVERY PROPHET HAD AN ENEMY

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. (Tafseer Qurtubi, Vol.7, Page 67) (Al-An'am 6:112)

Prophet Abraham had Nimrod as his enemy
-Musa (a.s) had the Fir’aun
-Jesus (a.s) had King Herod as his enemy
-and these men plotted against the truth because they didn't want to lose their status

2. EVERY TOWN HAS AN ENEMY INSIDE IT THAT PLOT AGAINST THE TRUTH

And thus We have set up in every town great ones of its wicked people to plot therein. But they plot not except against their ownselves, and they perceive (it) not. (Al-An'am 6:123)

-So if you should go to any town to speak the truth
-expect to find people who will be against you

3. SOMETIMES YOUR OWN FAMILY BECOMES YOUR GREATEST ENEMY

O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you (i.e. may stop you from the obedience of Allah), therefore beware of them! But if you pardon (them) and overlook, and forgive (their faults), then verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (At-Taghabun 64:14)

4. YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED THE MOMENT TO SPEAK THE TRUTH

By Al-'Asr (the time). (Al-'Asr 103:1)

Verily! Man is in loss, (Al-'Asr 103:2)

Except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma'ruf)which Allah has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar)which Allah has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah's Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc.). (Al-'Asr 103:3)

-this is why Allah revealed surah 103:3

5. SHIRK IS A BUSINESS AND THOSE WHO BENEFIT FROM IT HATE ISLAM AUTOMATICALLY

-unless Allah guides them to Islam

6. WEALTH AND CHILDREN ARE FITNA

And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward. (Al-Anfal 8:28)

-Europe, Japan, USA etc. are rich countries and most of them don't believe

7. EVERY SECT OF PEOPLE HAVE THEIR WOMEN TO SUPPORT THEM IN THEIR KUFR

And his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of Sadan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet (Peace be upon him), or use to slander him). (Al-Masad 111:4)

-the Jews use their women to get secrets from you

8. THIS IS A GREAT PREDICTION OF THE HOLY QUR'AN

If you were a sahabi living at the time of the rasul (saw)
-and this surah is revealed, if you go to give him da’wah you are a kaafir
-because you are claiming that you do not believe in the Qur'an
-so no sahabi went to him to give him da’wah
-because the surah tells you that there is no hope for him
-Al Walid Ibn Mugheera was also predicted to be in the hellfire
-he wanted to be the prophet because he was jealous of him

I will cast him into Hell-fire (Al-Muddaththir 74:26)

9. ALL IT TOOK FOR ABU LAHABB TO PROVE THAT THE QUR'AN WAS FAKE WAS FOR HIM TO TAKE SHAHADAH

-but he never did so because the Qur'an is not a fake book

10. TO SLANDER THE TORCH-BEARERS OF THE TRUTH IS THE STRATEGY OF THE KUFAAR

-It is called propaganda warfare

They intend to put out the Light of Allah (i.e. the religion of Islam, this Qur'an, and Prophet Muhammad SAW) with their mouths. But Allah will complete His Light even though the disbelievers hate (it). (As-Saff 61:8)

11. YOUR NAME HAS A PROFOUND EFFECT ON YOUR CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY

-Abu Lahab has Abdul Uzzah as his name

-the rasul said that we should name our kids after good names
