-472-TAFSIR OF SURAH AZ-ZALZALAH

TAFSIR OF SURAH AZ-ZALZALAH

By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
8th RAMADAN 1434 / 17th JULY 2013

Notes by AT8 & Umm Farooq
Edited by Muminah_29

Zalzalah is the EARTHQUAKE

This Surah was revealed in MAKKAH

IT is short and it focuses on Judgment Day and Aqeedah

This Surah has all the characteristics of a Makkan Surah

Whereas Madinan Surahs focused on Shariah (Fasting, Inheritance, Jihad etc)

When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake. (Az-Zalzalah 99:1)

There will be a huge earthquake on the Day of Judgment

Judgment Day is a dreadful day, and mankind will behave in an intoxicated manner because of the horror they are in.

O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing. (Al-Hajj 22:1)

The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant one will drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state, yet they will not be drunken, but severe will be the Torment of Allah. (Al-Hajj 22:2)

The DAY is so horrific that every pregnant mother will drop her load.

The Earthquake which, is mentioned in Surah Zalzalah was also mentioned in Surah Al Hajj

The people will behave as if they are in a drunken state even though they did not consume any alcohol

They will behave as such because of the sheer horror and terror they will experience

On that day the Earth will throw out its burden.

When you overeat and your body rejects the food, you tend to vomit out the burden out of your digestive system

And when the earth throws out its burdens, (Az-Zalzalah 99:2)

And man will say "What is the matter with it?" (Az-Zalzalah 99:3)

Similarly the EARTH will vomit out all the dead bodies of the billion of people who were buried inside it as its burden

The dead bodies buried inside the Earth are classified as the Burden of the Earth.
Whenever an evil person is buried in the earth it becomes a burden for the earth.

Narrated Anas: There was a Christian who embraced Islam and read Surat-al-Baqarah and Al-`Imran, and he used to write (the revelations) for the Prophet. Later on he returned to Christianity again and he used to say: "Muhammad knows nothing but what I have written for him." Then Allah caused him to die, and the people buried him, but in the morning they saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is the act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and took his body out of it because he had run away from them." They again dug the grave deeply for him, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is an act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and threw his body outside it, for he had run away from them." They dug the grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. So they believed that what had befallen him was not done by human beings and had to leave him thrown (on the ground). (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 4, Book 56, Hadith 814)

Mankind will be astonished with the Earth’s shaking

On Judgment Day mankind will be like the flies that fly around a heat source. Totally confused, without direction

On that Day, the mountains will be reduced to wool from their once magnificent stature

Mankind will ask, why is the Earth behaving as such, and why is this Earthquake so huge.

They will exclaim, that they have never seen anything like this in their lifetime
It is the DAY on which the EARTH will TESTIFY on behalf of or against some people

All the people who committed crimes on the EARTH, the Earth will testify against them for their conviction

The Earth will also bear testimony on behalf of some people for their Salvation.

The Earth will also bear testimony for the Condemnation of some people

And this is the Tafseer of the previously mentioned Ayah

The Earth will be able to testify because it will be INSPIRED by its LORD to testify.
Hence Allah said:

Because your Lord has inspired it. (Az-Zalzalah 99:5)

A true believer is not allowed to question the possibility of the earth testifying on the Day of Judgment because we are not allowed to limit the powers of Allah

The above mentioned Ayah is the evidence that the only reason the Earth will be able to testify is because Allah allowed it do so by inspiring it

That Day mankind will proceed in scattered groups that they may be shown their deeds. (Az-Zalzalah 99:6)

In the above-mentioned Ayah, ALLAH is talking about the RESURRECTION of Mankind

This will take place after the THIRD blowing of the TRUMPET

The trumpet will be blown into three times on the Day of Judgment

1st BLOWING RAAJIFA

2ND BLOWING RAADIFA

3RD BLOWING ZAJRAH

Mankind will come out of their graves in groups for Judgment and to be shown their Deeds on the third blowing

The Muslims will be with the Muslims, The Jews with the Jews, the Christian with the Christian and so on

The Holy Prophet (SAWS) told us that on Judgment Day you will be with those who you loved.

Narrated Anas: A man asked the Prophet (saws) about the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet (saws) said, "What have you prepared for it?" The man said, "Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet (saws) said, "You will be with those whom you love." We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet (saws) (i.e., "You will be with those whom you love.") Therefore, I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs. (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 5, Book 57, Hadith 37)

>>>THE 5 STAGES OF JUDGEMENT DAY <<<

1)   RESURRECTION

Man will be resurrected bear footed, naked, uncircumcised and thirsty and also unconscious

Narrated By 'Aisha Allah's Apostle said, "The people will be gathered barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised." I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Will the men and the women look at each other?" He said, "The situation will be too hard for them to pay attention to that." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 76, Hadith #534]

2) THE LAKE FOUNT (Houd)

The lake fount is the fountain of the Holy Prophet (saws) from which the Ummah of Muhammad (saw) will go to drink to quench their thirst

Every Prophet has a lake fount but the fountain of Muhammad (saw) is the biggest

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection a group of companions will come to me, but will be driven away from the Lake Fount, and I will say, 'O Lord (those are) my companions!' It will be said, 'You have no knowledge as to what they innovated after you left; they turned apostate as renegades (reverted from Islam)." [Sahih Bukhari (8/120) No. 6585

Those who commit Bid’ah in the DEEN will be barred from drinking from the lake fount on the Day of Judgment.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr The Prophet said, "My Lake Fount is (so large that it takes) a month's journey to cross it. Its water is whiter than milk, and its smell is nicer than musk (a kind of Perfume), and its drinking cups are (as numerous) as the (number of) stars of the sky; and whoever drinks from it, will never be thirsty."  (Book #76, Hadith #581)

3) THE RECKONING (Al-Hisaab)

Some people will be given their books in their right hand and others will be given their books in their left hand

70,00 will enter the Paradise without any Hisaab
Hence the Holy Prophet (saw) said:

(Abu Huraira narrated: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, ''From my followers there will enter Paradise a crowd, seventy thousand in number whose faces will glitter as the moon does when it is full.'' On hearing that, Ukasha bin Mihsan Al-Asdi got up, lifting his covering sheet, and said, ''O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah that He may make me one of them.'' The Prophet said, ''O Allah, make him one of them.'' Another man from the Ansar got up and said, ''O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah to make me one of them. ''The Prophet said (to him), ''Ukasha has preceded you.''(Sahi Bukhari Vol: 8 Hadith No: 550)

Narrated By Sahl bin Sad The Prophet said, "Verily! 70,000 or 700,000 of my followers will enter Paradise altogether; so that the first and the last amongst them will enter at the same time, and their faces will be glittering like the bright full moon." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 54, Hadith #470]

You will be questioned about four things at the Hisaab.
Hence the Holy Prophet (saw) said in the following Hadith:

Abu Barzah al Aslami radi Allahu anhu reported that Allah's Messenger sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "The two feet of the servant will not cease (from standing before Allah) on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about four things on his life and how he spent it; on his knowledge and what he did with it; on his wealth and where he earned it and how he spent it; and on his body and in what way he utilized it." [Saheeh, reported by At-Tirmidhi

Those who are given their books in their right hand will go to Paradise and those who will be given their books in their left hand will go to Hell.

4) AL-MEEZAAN

The Meezan is the scales, which will be used to weigh the deeds of mankind on the Day of Judgment.
In this regard Allah said:

Then as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy, (Al-Qari'ah 101:6)

He will live a pleasant life (in Paradise). (Al-Qari'ah 101:7)

But as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be light, (Al-Qari'ah 101:8)

He will have his home in Hawiyah (pit, i.e. Hell). (Al-Qari'ah 101:9)

And what will make you know what it is? (Al-Qari'ah 101:10)

(It is) a hot blazing Fire! (Al-Qari'ah 101:11)

5) AS-SIRAAT

As- Siraat is the final stage on Judgment Day.
It is a bridge which is placed over the hellfire and everyone will cross the Siraat.
In this regard Allah said:

There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord; a Decree which must be accomplished. (Maryam 19:71)

Do not put a spin on the ayah above and say all of Mankind will go through Hell. This is the Tafseer of the hypocrites and the infidels.

In fact all of mankind will have to cross the Siraat over the hellfire
Some will fall into the hellfire and some will reach the other side, saved from the fire. Some will cross the Siraat with the speed of lightning.

If a Muslim falls over the bridge, he will come out of it with the intercession of the Holy Prophet (SAWS)

This is because any person with an atom's weight of IMAAN will come out of Hell

Narrated By Anas The Prophet said, "Whoever said "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a barley grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a wheat grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of an atom will be taken out of Hell." [Al-Bukhari (44) and Muslim (193)]

However if a Kaafir or a Munaafiq should fall into the hellfire, he will abide therein forever, because there is no intercession for them.
In this regard Allah said:

"What has caused you to enter Hell?" (Al-Muddaththir 74:42)

They will say "We were not of those who used to offer their Salāt (prayers). (Al-Muddaththir 74:43)

"Nor we used to feed Al-Miskin (the poor); (Al-Muddaththir 74:44)

"And we used to talk falsehood (all that which Allāh hated) with vain talkers. (Al-Muddaththir 74:45)

"And we used to belie the Day of Recompense. (Al-Muddaththir 74:46)

"Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." (Al-Muddaththir 74:47)

So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them. (Al-Muddaththir 74:48)

The Siraat will be very dark but ALLAH SWT will give us light to cross it.

Those with Strong Iman will be given strong light and those with Weak Iman will be given a weak light.

If a person went backward & forward in Islam (sometimes a Muslim and sometimes a kaafir) ALLAH SWT will give him light on the Siraat and also snatch it away from him.

The way you threat ALLAH SWT in the dunya, ALLAH SWT will threat you the same way in the Aakhira.

ALLAH SWT will show you your deeds on the Day of Judgment.

So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (Az-Zalzalah 99:7)

If you remove a harmful thing from the road and put it aside, it will be seen on the Day of Judgment and you will get a reward for it.

If you give one dates to someone for breaking fast, you will see it on the Day of Judgment.

We are not allowed to look down on small acts of charity or Taqwa.
We may view it as small, but it may be the one deed, that will take us to Jannah.

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim Allah's Apostle said, "There will be none among you but his Lord will talk to him, and there will be no interpreter between him and Allah. He will look to his right and see nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look to his left and see nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look in front of him and see nothing but the (Hell) Fire facing him. So save yourself from the (Hell) Fire even with half a date (given in charity)." Al-A'mash said 'Amr bin Murra said, Khaithama narrated the same and added, '..even with a good word.'" Sahih Bukhari Volume 9, Book 93, Number 603

Some people do not want to do small acts of charity or kindness, but what we do not know is which one (small) special deed will take you to Jannah, so never look down on small deeds of charity!
The following Hadith about the prostitute is evidence that we are not supposed to refuse to do small kindness/acts of charity.

Narrated by Abu Huraira the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her headcover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that." [Sahih Bukhari (4/130) No. 3321

In the above-mentioned hadith, ALLAH SWT allowed a prostitute to enter Jannah for giving water to a thirsty dog.

Therefore we are not allowed to look down on small acts of kindness,

Have you seen him who denies the Recompense? (Al-Ma'un 107:1)

That is he who repulses the orphan (harshly), (Al-Ma'un 107:2)

And urges not the feeding of AlMiskīn (the poor), (Al-Ma'un 107:3)

Who delay their Salat (prayer) from their stated fixed times, (Al-Ma'un 107:5)

Those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men), (Al-Ma'un 107:6)

And refuse AlMa'un (small kindnesses e.g. salt, sugar, water, etc.). (Al-Ma'un 107:7)

On the authority of Sha'bee who said 'Umar Ibn alKhattab was on a night's journey and he saw a caravan and the night was pitch black. He told a man to call them. They were asked "Where are you coming from?" Abdullah ibn Masood answered and said "We are coming from fajj Ameeq  the Deep Valley referring to an ayah of the Holy Quran (Surah 22:27)." They were then asked "And where are you going?" Ibn Masood said "Bayt Ateeq, referring to the Quranic name for the Ka'bah 'The Ancient House'." Umar then said "Verily there's a scholar amongst you." So Umar ordered a man to ask them "Which part of the Quran is the greatest?" Ibn Masood replied "He is Allah other than whom there's no god, the EverLiving.

(Ayatul Kursee)." Then they were asked, "Which part of the Quran is most clear in justice?" Ibn Masood replied, "Verily Allah has commanded that we do justice and be proficient in doing our duties (Surah 16:90)." Then Umar asked them "Which part of the Quran is most profound." Ibn Masood answered "Whosoever did an atoms weight of good shall see it then (Surah 99:7-8)." Then Umar asked them "Which part of the Quran gives the most hope?" Ibn Masood replied "Say O My servants who have wronged themselves by committing sins do not give up from the mercy of Allah. (Surah 39:53)." Umar then asked them "Is Abdullah ibn Masood with you?" The people in the caravan said "By Allah yes."' [Majmua Takhreej alDin alMaqdisi (pg. 7) No. 6]

And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (Az-Zalzalah 99:8)

The angels have recorded our deeds, which will be shown to us on Judgment Day.

We are not allowed to deny them (i.e. the Angels) they don’t make mistakes.

Even though we are not allowed to deny our deeds, the kuffaar will deny their deeds on the Day of Judgment.

The Muslims will admit their sins on the Day of Judgment and Allah will forgive them for their sins.
However the Kuffaar will deny their sins so ALLAH SWT will seal their lips and make their limbs testify against them in regards to the haram things they used to do.
In this regard Allah said:

This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn. (It is said that one's left thigh will be the first to bear the witness). [Tafsir At-Tabarī, Vol. 22, Page 24] (Ya-Sin 36:65)

The first limb to testify against us on Judgment Day will be our left leg.
