PROPHET SALIH (AS)

After the destruction of the people of Aad, because of their shirk, the tribe of Thamud succeeded them in power, wealth, knowledge and glory.

The tribe of Thamud were also Arabs, and they were situated approx 300km away from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

It is not surprising Allah (SWT) has destroyed many empires and civilisations, as Allah (SWT) has set a fixed time for every empire and civilisation.

In addition, for every nation is a [specified] term. Therefore, when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].

And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment). (Al-A'raf 7:34)

The destruction of the people of Aad were fresh in the minds of the people of Thamud, however they still made the same mistakes as the people of Aad did; did not learn any lessons from the destruction of the people of Aad.

Therefore, they became pagans just like their predecessors.

As they increased in their wealth, the more they increased in their vices and this is the scenario for every civilisation.

Say (O Muhammad SAW to the people of the Scripture) : "Shall I inform you of something worse than that, regarding the recompense from Allah: those (Jews) who incurred the Curse of Allah and His Wrath, those of whom (some) He transformed into monkeys and swines, those who worshipped Taghut (false deities); such are worse in rank (on the Day of Resurrection in the Hellfire) and far more astray from the Right Path (in the life of this world)"

(Al-Ma'idah 5:60)

Just like the people of Aad, the people of Thamud were proud of their craftsmanship, so they hewed homes out of rocks.

Tyranny was the order of the day, as their affairs were in the hands of tyrants.

Whilst they were in that miserable state, Allah (SWT) sent them a prophet from amongst themselves. Allah (SWT) sent them prophet Salih (AS)

To guide them from kufr and shirk to tawheed and Islamic monotheism.

Every man-made ism and schism is a taghoot

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming) : "Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut[] (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah)." Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).

(An-Nahl 16:36)

tag hoot means a false deity, anything that is worshipped or obeyed besides Allah (SWT) is a taghoot

taghoot means the kaafir army, the kaafir courthouse, an icon for a false religion such as mother Teresa

also the kaafir institutions such as NATO, UN and the IMF, freemasons etc are all taghoot.

You can only join Islamic organisations

And to Thamud (people, We sent) their brother Salih (Saleh). He said: "O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other Ilah (God) but Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein, then asks forgiveness of Him and turn to Him in repentance. Certainly, my Lord is Near (to all by His Knowledge), Responsive."

(Hud 11:61)

Prophet Salih (AS) was known for his wisdom and his piety, even before he became a prophet and Allah (SWT) only chooses people that are good in character as people like to use your past against you, so Allah (SWT) always chose the best of people to be His prophets.

They said: "O Salih (Saleh)! You have been among us as a figure of good hope (and we wished for you to be our chief), till this [new thing which you have brought; that we leave our gods and worship your God (Allah) Alone]! Do you (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped? But we are really in grave doubt as to that which you invite us to (monotheism)."

(Hud 11:62)

ibn Kathir said the only reason they could give prophet Salih (AS) was they found their forefathers worshipping idols and so this is why they were doing this

When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah has sent down." They say: "Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following." (Would they do that!) Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided?

(Al-Baqarah 2:170)

You cannot follow parents, you follow the hujjah.

Because some parents are kuffaar, some are mushrikeen and some are zindeeq (heretic).

The story of Salih (AS) tells you that people are loyal to their pagan culture. The majority of Buddhists in china, Japan and Burma will not take their shahada, similarly the Hindus of India and sri lanka will never take shahada.

Abu Taalib was loyal to a fault and because of this, he died as a kaafir. The prophet (SAWS) was very saddened by this and Allah (SWT) consoled the prophet (AS) by revealing the above Quranic verse.

Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (Al-Qasas 28:56)

You can love a kaafir, but it cannot be spiritual love, it has to be emotional love.

Prophet Salih (AS) was unrelenting (never gave up) in his dawah, so the chiefs of the city challenged him to make a camel appear from a rock.

Prophet Salih (AS) accepted the challenge, and so when people heard this, a huge crowd gathered at the foot of the mountain to see who would be the victor.

Before Salih (AS) invoked his Lord, he took a pledge from the people that they swore by Allah (SWT) that they would believe if he were able to make a camel come out of the rock.

So Prophet Salih (AS) invoked his Lord, and Allah (SWT) made a she-camel appear from the rock and this camel was 10 weeks pregnant.

The people were amazed by the size and beauty of the camel, so many people believed in prophet Salih (AS), but the majority remained as kuffaar.

So these people broke their 'Wallahi'

And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.

(Yusuf 12:103)

And when the punishment fell on them, they said: "O Musa (Moses)! Invoke your Lord for us because of His Promise to you. If you will remove the punishment from us, we indeed shall believe in you, and we shall let the Children of Israel go with you." But when We removed the punishment from them to a fixed term, which they had to reach, behold! They broke their word! So We took retribution from them. We drowned them in the sea, because they belied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and were heedless about them.

(Al-A'raf 7:134-136)

When the people went back on their 'Wallahi', they continued in their kufr, shirk and zandaqa.

Until, when death comes to one of them (those who join partners with Allah), he says: "My Lord! Send me back, That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.

(Al-Mu'minun 23:99-100)

These were empty promises and if he were returned back to the world, he would continue to do the same haram things he did previously because sins are addictive.

The reason why the people of Salih (AS) went back on their words and did not believe in Salih (AS), was because they were addicted to their evil and corrupted desires.

And nothing stops Us from sending the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) but that the people of old denied them. And We sent the she-camel to Thamud as a clear sign, but they did her wrong. And We sent not the signs except to warn, and to make them afraid (of destruction).

(Al-Isra 17:59)

This she-camel in Arabic is naaqatullah (the she-camel of Allah).

This she-camel was unique in the sense she was able to provide milk for everybody in the city.

"And O my people! This she-camel of Allah is a sign to you, leave her to feed on Allah's earth, and touch her not with evil, lest a near torment will seize you."

(Hud 11:64)

Those who hanged on to kufr, they hated the she-camel and Salih (AS). they hated the she-camel as she was the hujjah.

The people asked prophet Salih (AS) to bring a camel from the rock, because the camel is essential to the Arab culture.

The camel was innocent, and for you to hate the camel who was feeding you with milk, you focused your hatred on the camel only because it was the hujjah.

  • People do not like the hujjah.

When the people of Salih (AS) turned their hatred towards the camel of Allah (SWT), it was only because they hated the hujjah.

They complained, the first complaint was the she-camel was so large that it Frightened all the other animals away, so prophet Salih (AS) was able to compromise with the people by letting the she-camel drink separately from the other animals, so the people agreed.

Then the people made another complaint, saying the she-camel drank too much water.

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. (Tafseer Qurtubi, Vol.7, Page 67)

(Al-An'am 6:112)

And thus, We have set up in every town great ones of its wicked people to plot therein. But they plot not except against their own selves, and they perceive (it) not.

(Al-An'am 6:123)

The chiefs of the city then approached the most beautiful girls in the city to use their charms to entice the men to kill the she-camel of Allah (SWT).

A very beautiful girl called Saduq bint Mahya took up the offer

This woman proposed to a man called Masarai and when he saw how beautiful she was, he could not refuse the offer.

An old woman called Aniza approached another man Qudar ibn Saluf with her proposal, for him to marry any of her three beautiful daughters.

These two men picked up the offers because men are weak and think with their private parts.

Usama Ibn Zayd (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “I have not left behind me any fitnah (temptation) more harmful to men than women.” [Reported by al-Bukhaari (5096) and Muslim (2740)]

To kill the she-camel of Allah, was a huge task, and only the worst of kuffaar would do this, and because of no one having the courage to do this, the people used the oldest trick in the book, by using the biggest fitnah (women) to entice them to kill the she-camel.

These individuals carried out surveillance on the camel to watch the drinking pattern of the camel; they hid in the bushes.

The first to strike the camel was Masarai with an arrow and this hit the camel in the leg.

Qudar chopped up the other leg with his sword, this blow was more devastating than the first.

When the camel was on the ground, they gave it the fatal blow by chopping its head.

When the people heard this, they were cheering and these two individuals came back to a heroes welcome.

This was because they got rid of the hujjah.

When they went back to the city, people were reciting poetry and singing songs praising the two men.

This shows how evil and depraved these people were, as they asked for a miracle and got this miracle. but even after this, they broke their 'Wallahi' and killed the hujjah and praised the people that did this.

When prophet Salih heard this, he told them they had three days to enjoy themselves, and then the torment of Allah (SWT) will come to them.

Their attitude was, why three days? bring it on now!

Prophet Salih (AS) was saying why you do not make tauba for killing the camel.

Why are you hasty to receive the punishment of Allah (SWT)?

And indeed, We sent to Thamud their brother Salih (Saleh), saying: "Worship Allah (Alone and none else). Then look! They became two parties (believers and disbelievers) quarreling with each other."  He said: "O my people! Why do you seek to hasten the evil (torment) before the good (Allah's Mercy)? Why seek you not the Forgiveness of Allah, that you may receive mercy?" They said: "We augur ill omen from you and those with you." He said: "Your ill omen is with Allah; nay, but you are a people that are being tested." And there were in the city nine men (from the sons of their chiefs), who made mischief in the land, and would not reform. They said: "Swear one to another by Allah that we shall make a secret night attack on him and his household, and afterwards we will surely say to his near relatives: 'We witnessed not the destruction of his household, and verily! We are telling the truth.'" So they plotted a plot, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not. Then see how was the end of their plot! Verily! We destroyed them and their nation, all together. These are their houses in utter ruin, for they did wrong. Verily, in this is indeed an Ayah (a lesson or a sign) for people who know.

(An-Naml 27:45-52)

Not only did they plot to kill the she-camel, these nine mischief-makers were plotting the murder of prophet Salih (AS).

When the three day elapsed, a huge thunderbolt was heard in the sky.

The entire city of Thamud had huge and devastating earthquakes

These tall and lofty building hewed from the mountains could not save them.

Their dwellings crumbled and they were crushed by their own buildings.

And to Thamud (people, We sent) their brother Salih (Saleh). He said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. (La ilaha ill-Allah: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah). Indeed there has come to you a clear sign (the miracle of the coming out of a huge she camel from the midst of a rock) from your Lord. This she camel of Allah is a sign unto you; so you leave her to graze in Allah's earth, and touch her not with harm, lest a painful torment should seize you. "And remember when He made you successors after 'Ad (people) and gave you habitations in the land, you build for yourselves palaces in plains, and carve out homes in the mountains. So remember the graces (bestowed upon you) from Allah, and do not go about making mischief on the earth." The leaders of those who were arrogant among his people said to those who were counted weak - to such of them as believed: "Know you that Salih (Saleh) is one sent from his Lord." They said: "We indeed believe in that with which he has been sent." Those who were arrogant said: "Verily, we disbelieve in that which you believe in." So they killed the she camel and insolently defied the Commandment of their Lord, and said: "O Salih (Saleh)! Bring about your threats if you are indeed one of the Messengers (of Allah)." So the earthquake seized them, and they lay (dead), prostrate in their homes.  Then he [Salih (Saleh)] turned from them, and said: "O my people! I have indeed conveyed to you the Message of my Lord, and have given you good advice but you like not good advisers."
(Al-A'raf 7:73-79)

Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin). When the wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.

(Ash-Shams 91:11-15)

Ibn `Umar said, “When the Messenger of Allah went to the area of Al-Hijr in Tabuk with the people, he camped near the homes of Thamud, in Al-Hijr and the people brought water from the wells that Thamud used before. They used that water to make dough and placed the pots (on fire) for cooking. However, the Prophet commanded them to spill the contents of the pots and to give the dough to their camels. He then marched forth with them from that area to another area, near the well that the camel (as will follow) used to drink from He forbade the Companions from entering the area where people were tormented saying," I fear that what befell them might befall you as well. Therefore, do not enter on them.”

{Ahmad (mention in the tafsir of Ibn Kathir)}
