16 THE STORY OF PROPHET ZAKARIYA (AS) {FEBRUARY 02 2014}

THE STORIES OF THE
PROPHET ZAKARIYAH (AS) Zechariah

(THE 21 LESSON FROM THE STORY OF ZAKARIYA (AS))

FEBRUARY 02 2014 / 02 Rabi Al Thani 1435 Hijri

Shaikh Abdullah AL Faisal

Edited By Abu Hafiza & Jansep2001

Zakariyah (AS) was one of the prophets of Bani Isreal.

(Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your Place of worship), so accept this, from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing."

(Aali Imran 3:35)

This is the beginning of the story in which the wife of Imran made a dua for the foetus inside her womb.

A Muslim woman should make dua for the foetus inside her womb all of the time; as well as the father.

Allah (SWT) will always answer the dua of three people.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said; Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler.

[Al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi - Sahih]

The prophet (SAW) declared, 'Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: when a fasting person breaks fast (in another narration, the fasting person until he breaks his fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.'

[Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi - Hasan]

The foetus was Mariam the mother of Jesus (AS).

Mariam is one of the four special women of paradise.

Anas reports that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allaahu alaihi wa sallam, said: 'The best women of mankind are four: Mariam daughter of `Imraan, Assiya wife of Pharaoh, Khadija daughter of Khuwailid, and Fatima the daughter of the Messenger of Allaah.'

[Bukhari and Muslim]

Then when she delivered her [child Maryam (Mary)], she said: "O my Lord! I have delivered a female child," - and Allah knew better what she delivered, - "And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam (Mary), and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast."

(Aali Imran 3:36)

Not only did Imran (AS) make a dua for Maryam but she also made a dua for the offspring of Maryam.

Every time he went to visit Maryam, he saw her with sustenance.

At that time Zakariyah (AS) was without a son or daughter at the age of 75.

When he found her with the fruit and Maryam said it was from Allah (SWT), he got an idea that Allah (SWT) could bless him with an offspring.

He was looking after Maryam because it was a decision by the elders who drew lots.

This is a part of the news of the Ghaib (unseen, i.e. the news of the past nations of which you have no knowledge) which We inspire you with (O Muhammad SAW). You were not with them, when they cast lots with their pens as to which of them should be charged with the care of Maryam (Mary); nor were you with them when they disputed.

(Aali Imran 3:44)

Zakariyah (AS) was the father of Yahya (AS).

At that time Zakariya (Zachariya) invoked his Lord, saying: "O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation."

(Aali Imran 3:38)

Zakariyah (AS) made this dua to his lord and the angels called him while his was in the minhrab; minhrab is a private room.

Then the angels called him, while he was standing in prayer in Al-Minhrab (a praying place or a private room), (saying) : "Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya (John), confirming (believing in) the Word from Allah [i.e. the creation of 'Iesa (Jesus), the Word from Allah ("Be!" - and he was!)], noble, keeping away from sexual relations with women, a Prophet, from among the righteous."

(Aali Imran 3:39)

All Allah (SWT) needed to create Yahya (AS) was "Be" and he was.

The birth of Yahya (AS) is similar to the birth of Ishmael (AS).

He said: "O my Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old, and my wife is barren?" Allah said: "Thus Allah does what He wills."

(Aali Imran 3:40)

He said: "O my Lord! Make a sign for me." Allah said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals. And remember your Lord much (by praising Him again and again), and glorify (Him) in the afternoon and in the morning."

(Aali Imran 3:41)

Allah (SWT) is Al Qadr, He does as He wills.

(This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah).

(Maryam 19:2)

Zakariyah (AS) used to work as a carpenter; because he was a carpenter, he was not rich.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "(Prophet) Zackary (ﷺ) was a carpenter."

{Arabic/English Riyadh Us Saleheen 542} & {Al Bukhari book 1 hadith 542}

This means he was humble; his earnings were humble earnings.

The scholars say he call out to his Lord in secret.

When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret,

(Maryam 19:3)

He performed Tahajjud.

The best time to pray to your Lord is the last 1/3 of the night.

‘Amr ibn ‘Absah reported that the Prophet (SAW) said: “The closest that the Lord is to His slave is in the later part of the night, so if you can be one of those who remember Allah at that time, then do so.”

[Sunan Tirmidhi (5/569) No. 3579, Sunan al-Nasa'i (1/279) No. 572]

Tahajjud is important because no one can say you are showing off and everyone is sleeping; you did your ibada in secret.

Allah (SWT) descends the last third of the night in a way that befits his majesty.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Our Lord (glorified and exalted be He) descends each night to the earth's sky when there remains the final third of the night, and He says: Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?

{It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim, Malik, at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud). In a version by Muslim the Hadith ends with the words: And thus He continues till [the light of] dawn shines}

Zakariya (AS) called out to his lord in secret at Tahajjud.

Saying: "My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and grey hair has spread on my head, And I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O my Lord!

(Maryam 19:4)

He put his tawakkul in Allah (SWT).

Tawakkul means trust in Allah (SWT).

Prophet Zakariyah (AS) said my head is on fire with grey hair.

"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir,

(Maryam 19:5)

He is concerned about his relatives.

He wanted offspring to carry on with the dawah work.

He was concerned that they would suffer a relapse in their deen.

Satan runs in our veins as blood runs in our veins.

Narrated by Safiyyah said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Be at ease, she is Safiyyah daughter of Huyayy. They said: Be glory to Allah, Messenger of Allah! He said: Satan runs in man like blood. I feared he might inspire something in your mind, or he said: evil (the narrator doubted).

{Sunan Abi Dawud 2470 Book 13, Hadith 2464}

"Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophet hood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!".

(Maryam 19:6)

Zakariyah (AS) is begging for offspring even though his bones have become feeble and his hair is on fire with grey hair.

"All in the heavens and earth and the fish in the depth of the water seek forgiveness for the scholar, and the superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like the superiority of the full moon at night over the rest of the stars. Verily the scholars are the heirs to the Prophets. Verily, the Prophets did not bequeath deenars or dirhams.  All they left behind was knowledge, so whoever takes it, has indeed acquired a huge fortune."

[Musnad Ahmad (5/196) No. 21763; Also related by Abu Dawud (2/341) No. 3641; at-Tirmidhi (5/48) No. 2682; Ibn Majah (1/150) No. 223, ad-Daarimee (1/110) No. 342 and ibn Hibbaan (1/289) No. 88]

He wanted an offspring to inherit his prophecy.

Thereupon Abu Bakr said, "The Apostle of God (ﷺ) said, "We leave no inheritance, what we leave behind us is sadaqah."

[Sahih Muslim: Book 19 Chapter 16 Hadith 4354]

What Prophet Zakariyah (AS) was speaking about was not dunya matters.

The shia'ts give a different meaning, they say he wanted a son to leave behind for dunya matters.

One of the major disputes between shia and Sunni is about fadak.

(Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)."

(Maryam 19:7)

Yahya in the English language is John.

He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age."

(Maryam 19:8)

Zakariyah (AS). was 75 years old

He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!"

(Maryam 19:9)

When you read this ayah, ayah 76:1-3 comes to mind.

Has there not been over man a period of time, when he was nothing to be mentioned? Verily, We have created man from Nutfah drops of mixed semen (discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer. Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.

(Al-Insan 76:1-3)

[Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." Then he came out to his people from Al-Minhrab (a praying place or a private room, etc.), he told them by signs to glorify Allah's Praises in the morning and in the afternoon. (It was said to his son) : "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). And Salamun (peace) be on him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised up to life (again)!

(Maryam 19:10-15)

21 LESSONS ARE TO BE LEARNED FROM THE STORY OF ZAKARIYAH (AS) AND YAHYA (AS).

LESSON 1: ALLAH AND THE UMMAH OF MUHAMMAD ((ﷺ)) HOLD MARYAM IN HIGH ESTEEM

So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya (Zachariya). Every time he entered Al-Minhrab to (visit) her , he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Maryam (Mary)! From where have you got this?" She said, "This is from Allah." Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit."

(Aali Imran 3:37)

LESSON 2: EVEN PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT PROPHETS ARE BLESSED WITH MIRACLES

- Maryam was blessed with miracles and she was not a prophet.

LESSON 3: YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ALLAH (SWT) DON'T BE PESSIMISTIC

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), who said that the Prophet () said: "Allah the Almighty said: 'I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed."

[Al-Bukhari (7405) also by Muslim (2675), at-Tirmidhi (2388) and Ibn Majah (3822)]

If you think of Allah (SWT) in a positive way, Allah (SWT) will give you what you ask for.

And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.

(Al-Baqarah 2:186)

Zakariyah (AS) and his wife were both old but he raised his hands and asked Allah (SWT)

LESSON 4: A RIGHTEOUS SERVANT OF ALLAH WORRIES ABOUT LEAVING BEHIND PIOUS OFFSPRING

"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir,

(Maryam 19:5)

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger () as saying: Zakariyya (peace be upon him) was a carpenter.

{Sahih Muslim (Book #030, Chapter 40 Hadith #5863)}

LESSON 5: NO SHAME IN WORKING AND EARNING YOUR OWN LIVING

LESSON 6: ALLAH PRAISED YAHYA BY SAYING HE WILL BE A BOY WHO WILL OBSTAIN FROM ZINA

Zina is fornication and adultery.

Narrated By Sahl bin Sa'd: Allah's Apostle () said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him."

[Trans Sahih Bukhari Vol: 8 Book 81 Chapter 23 No. 6474]

To abstain from zina makes you noble.

The tongue and the private parts are very difficult to control.

LESSON 7: THE BIRTH OF YAHYA IS LIKE THE BIRTH OF ISMAEL

Both prophets father were old.

Ibrahim (AS) was 85 and Zakariyah (AS) was 75.

LESSON 8: PEOPLE ARE APREHENSIVE ABOUT THE AGING PROCESS

He said: "O my Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old, and my wife is barren?" Allah said: "Thus Allah does what He wills."

(Aali Imran 3:40)

Saying: "My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and grey hair has spread on my head, And I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O my Lord!

(Maryam 19:4)

People worry about the aging process.

If you can discover a plant to reverse the aging process, you will become rich.

The Jew would like to live for 1000 years.

According to the Stem cell, research people will live much longer than 70 years in the future.

People see stem cell research as very dangerous.

It will allow people to live over 500 years.

People don't like grey hair and find it very uncomfortable.

LESSON 9: THE RIGHTEOUS FEAR FOR THEIR FAMILY AFTER THEY ARE GONE

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), who said that the Messenger of Allah () said: "Allah said: 'Sons of Adam inveigh against [the vicissitudes of] Time, and I am Time, in My hand is the night and the day.'" As the Almighty is the Ordainer of all things, to inveigh against misfortunes that are part of Time is tantamount to inveighing against Him.

[Bukhari (also by Muslim)]

The hadith means you look at yourself in the mirror and you see white hair and wrinkles and say look what time has done to me you start to abuse time.

Prophet Zakariyah (AS) was concerned because he did not have any pious children.

"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir,

(Maryam 19:5)

David (AS) had Sulaiman (AS); So David (AS) did not have to worry.

Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya'qub (Jacob)? When he said unto his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We shall worship your Ilah (God - Allah), the Ilah (God) of your fathers, Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), One Ilah (God), and to Him we submit (in Islam)."

(Al-Baqarah 2:133)

Before Zakariyah (AS), Sulaiman (AS), David (AS) we're going to Yaqub (AS). Even he was worried.

Even prophet Jacob (AS) gathered his 12 sons around his deathbed.

Every righteous man is concerned.

LESSON 10: WOMEN SHOULD HAVE KIDS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG

The best age for women to have children is when they are 18, 19, and 20

LESSON 11: PROPHETS LEAVE BEHIND ILM FOR PEOPLE TO INHERIT

ILM MEANS KNOWLEDGE

The Holy Prophet () said, “The Scholars are the Inheritors of the Prophets”

(Sunan At-Tirmidhi Vol. 5 p.2685)

"Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophet hood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!".

(Maryam 19:6)

LESSON 12: CHILDREN ARE GIFTS FROM ALLAH (SWT)

(Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)."

(Maryam 19:7)

Mankind is divided up into five categories where kids are concerned.

To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He bestows female (offspring) upon whom He wills, and bestows male (offspring) upon whom He wills. Or He bestows both males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills. Verily, He is the All-Knower and is Able to do all things.

(Ash-Shura 42:49-50)

1 Males alone, 2: female alone, 3 male and female, 4: barren, 5: disable.

These are the five categories of children Allah (SWT) blesses mankind with If you have male and female you are the most blessed.

LESSON 13: PROPHETS ARE INFALLIBLE

And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous,

(Maryam 19:13)

No prophet dabbled in zina or alcohol.

Allah (SWT) made them infallible so people cannot use their sins against them.

LESSON 14: LOOKING AFTER YOUR PARENTS IS A NOBLE AND RIGHTEOUS DEED

And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents).

(Maryam 19:14)

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small."

(Al-Isra 17:23-24)

LESSON 15: EVERY SOUL SHALL TASTE DEATH

And Salamun (peace) be on him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised up to life (again)!

(Maryam 19:15)

Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing).

(Aali Imran 3:185)

Verily, you (O Muhammad ) will die and verily, they (too) will die.

(Az-Zumar 39:30)

The Sufis believe Prophet Mohammad () is alive in his grave.

Narrated Anas: Whenever drought threatened them, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, used to ask Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He used to say, "O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain." And so it would rain.

(Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 17, Number 123)

The grave is an idol that people worship.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah () said, "O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The anger on those who took the graves of their Prophets as places of prostration was terrible."

[Muwatta Malik (1/223) No. 570, Musannaf Abdur Razzaq (1/406) No. 1587, Musnad Ahmad (2/246) No. 7352]

All the people that pray to the grave are kaffirs and idol worshipers.

You are not allowed to pray over them as Muslim.

If the Prophet () was alive in his grave, why would the angels say "you don't know what they did after you left"?

this is called the knockout punch for the grave worshipers.

Deviants can't survive when their are hanbali's around.

Statement of ibn Kathir.

Narrated Ibn Al-Musaiyab: The companions of the Prophet said, "Some men from my companions will come to my Lake-Fount and they will be driven away from it, and I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' It will be said, 'You have no knowledge of what they innovated after you left: they turned apostate as renegades (reverted from Islam).

{Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 586}

LESSON 16: A MOTHER IS ALLOWED TO MAKE A DUA FOR HER UNBORN FETUS

(Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your Place of worship), so accept this, from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing."

(Aali Imran 3:35)

Because the wife of Imran did this when Mary was inside of her womb.

LESSON 17: SIGN LANGUAGE IS AN ART

He said: "O my Lord! Make a sign for me." Allah said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals. And remember your Lord much (by praising Him again and again), and glorify (Him) in the afternoon and in the morning."

(Aali Imran 3:41)

Sign language is an art for the past and present.

LESSON 18: TO USE LOTS TO DECIDE A MATTER AVOIDS FITNA

This is a part of the news of the Ghaib (unseen, i.e. the news of the past nations of which you have no knowledge) which We inspire you with (O Muhammad ). You were not with them, when they cast lots with their pens as to which of them should be charged with the care of Maryam (Mary); nor were you with them when they disputed.

(Aali Imran 3:44)

Lots were used when they were disputing who should look after Maryam.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used lots to decide which wife was going on a journey with him.

Narrated By 'Aisha: Whenever the Prophet intended to proceed on a journey, he used to draw lots amongst his wives and would take the one upon whom the lot fell. Once, before setting out for Jihad, he drew lots amongst us and the lot came to me; so I went with the Prophet; and that happened after the revelation of the Verse Hijab (i.e. veiling).

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 52, Hadith #130]

LESSON 19: TAHAJJUD IS A GREAT VIRTUE

Because Allah (SWT) praised Zakariyah (AS).

When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret, (Maryam 19:3)

Zakariyah (AS) made his dua at tahajjud when everyone else was sleeping.

{Hadith Qudsi: 35}
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger () said: 'In the last third of every night our Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) (Allah (SWT)) descends to the lower most heaven and says; "Who is calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?."'

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

LESSON 20: TO BE MERCIFUL TO OTHERS IS A NOBLE ACT

Because Allah praised Yahya (AS). for being merciful to mankind.

And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous,

(Maryam 19:13)

Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah () said, “Those who are merciful will be given mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will have mercy on you.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 40, Hadith #4941]

LESSON 21: PRIDE AND ARROGANCE IS NO GOOD

Pride and arrogance is hated by Allah (SWT).

And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents).

(Maryam 19:14)

Pride and arrogance is ignoble quality.

"And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not each arrogant boaster.

(Luqman 31:18)
