EDITED BY Abu Hafiza & Jansep2001

The surah means a woman who is examined.

It was revealed in Medina and therefore contains instructions.

O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, this Qur'an, and Muhammad SAW), and have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:1)

What Allah (SWT) is saying in the ayah is, if you leave your home to do jihad.

Then don't take the kufaar (His enemies and your enemies) as your friends.

Else, you are contradicting yourself.

This ayah tells you that Allah's enemy is automatically your enemy.

He is giving you dignity and respect to the believer.

Whenever you read a book about al walaa wal baraa.

They always include this ayah in the book.

It is impossible to write without including this ayah.

Allah (SWT) have written in the heart of those who love and hate for His sake imam.

Allah (SWT) said in 58:22 defines what al walaa wal baraa means.

You (O Muhammad SAW) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW ), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Ruh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the Party of Allah. Verily, it is the Party of Allah that will be the successful.

(Al-Mujadilah 58:22)

Allah (SWT) tells you that they are the fortunate ones.

The kufaar drove out the Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his sahaba (RA) from their homeland.

Waraqa Ibn Nawfal predicted this.

Their only crime was that they believed in Allah and Allah (SWT) alone

Allah (SWT) said:

They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!

(Al-Buruj 85:8

...Khadijah said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Apostle described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly."...

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith #003]

This is a crime in the eyes of the kufaar.

They even hate Dr Zakir Naik, Bilal Philips who don't even preach jihad.

And yet they banned them from many countries.

They only preach a mild version of Islam.

Tarik Ramadaan believes in democracy yet they hate him.

Allah (SWT) said in the ayah that their only crime was tawheed and the believe in the day of judgement the Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that he won't have left his land if he wasn't driven out.

Abdullah bin 'Adi bin Al-Hamra reported that he heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, "By Allah ! You (O Makkah) are the best of Allah' s land, and most beloved to Him. Had I not been driven away from you, I would have never departed (from you)."

(recorded by At-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah; At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Sahih')

Allah (SWT) said that if you really came out to fight in the path of Allah (SWT) then you should not take kufaar as your friends and allies.

Loving the kufaar and waging jihad doesn't go hand in hand.

Allah (SWT) didn't put Bisillahi Ar Rahmani Ar Rahim at the beginning of surah Taubah because He was declaring baraa from the kufaar.

Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikun (see V.2:105) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(At-Tawbah 9:5)

And He revealed the verse of the sword.

This and many others that deal with killing the kufaar and munafiqoon make it inappropriate to do so.

Allah (SWT) doesn't do oxymoron.

He doesn't put two contracting things in the same ayah.

Allah (SWT) revealed this ayah because Quraish broke their peace treaty with the Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), they helped one tribe to kill another tribe which was an ally of the Muslims.

Verily, We have given you (O Muhammad SAW) a manifest victory.

(Al-Fath 48:1)

The Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) knew that they would break the treaty because they were not sincere.

When this happened, the Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) declared war against Quraish.

This was a secret but a sahabi by the name Hatib Ibn Abi Balta (RA) sent a letter to Quraish to inform them that the Rasool (SAW) was coming.

The Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) found out from supernatural means.

Narrated By 'Ali: Allah's Apostle sent me, Az-Zubair and Al-Miqdad saying, "Proceed till you reach Rawdat Khakh where there is a lady carrying a letter, and take that (letter) from her." So we proceeded on our way with our horses galloping till we reached the Rawda, and there we found the lady and said to her, "Take out the letter." She said, "I have no letter."

We said, "Take out the letter, or else we will take off your clothes." So she took it out of her braid, and we brought the letter to Allah's Apostle. The letter was addressed from Hatib, bin Abi Balta'a to some pagans of Mecca, telling them about what Allah's Apostle intended to do. Allah's Apostle said, "O Hatib! What is this?"

Hatib replied, "O Allah's Apostle! Do not make a hasty decision about me. I was a person not belonging to Quraish but I was an ally to them from outside and had no blood relation with them, and all the Emigrants who were with you, have got their kinsmen (in Mecca) who can protect their families and properties.

So I liked to do them a favor so that they might protect my relatives as I have no blood relation with them. I did not do this to renegade from my religion (i.e. Islam) nor did I do it to choose Heathenism after Islam." Allah's Apostle said to his companions." As regards him, he (i.e. Hatib) has told you the truth."

'Umar said, "O Allah's Apostle! Allow me to chop off the head of this hypocrite!" The Prophet said, "He (i.e. Hatib) has witnessed the Badr battle (i.e. fought in it) and what could tell you, perhaps Allah looked at those who witnessed Badr and said,

"O the people of Badr (i.e. Badr Muslim warriors), do what you like, for I have forgiven you. "Then Allah revealed the Sura:

"O you who believe! Take not my enemies And your enemies as friends offering them (Your) love even though they have disbelieved in that Truth (i.e. Allah, Prophet Muhammad and this Quran) which has come to you... (to the end of Verse)... (And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray (away) from the Straight Path." (60.1)

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #572]

The letter was carried by a woman who Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a paid her 10 dinars to deliver the letter to the chiefs of Quraish.
As stated in the above hadith.

He wrote the letter hoping that this favour will make Quraish protect his family.

Because he was a foreigner and wanted to do something to please them.

The Rasool (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) didn't say to Umar (RA) when he asked for permission to chop off his head.

That 'we don't kill spies and hypocrites'.

But he said that he attended Badr i.e he fought at badr.

And so he should have an explanation for this.

No one is allowed to use this incident and say that they can spy for the kufaar against the Muslims.

Hatib fought at Badr and no one today witnessed badr.

The Madkhalis use this as hujjah to spy for the kufaar against us.

Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:2)

When you look at this ayah, take a look at what is happening in Afghanistan, Russia, UK, USA, etc.

They are treating Muslims badly and they committed no crime but Allah (SWT) told you here that they would never treat you well.

They will always persecute you in darul harb.

Darul harb kill, lock up and oppress Muslims.

Darul islam don't kill or imprison Muslim.

The kufaar of USA killed the 16 year old of the Imam Anwar Al Awlaki (RH).

They make up lies to invade Muslim lands, steal their wealth and kill Muslims.

The white kaafir of Europe and America use cartoons to insult Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

They stretch forth their tongues to slander us.

Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:2)

They desire that you will become kufaar like them.

Allah said:

O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitanah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses) if you understand.

(Aali Imran 3:118)

They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another). So take not Auliya' (protectors or friends) from them, till they emigrate in the Way of Allah (to Muhammad SAW). But if they turn back (from Islam), take (hold) of them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither Auliya' (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them.

(An-Nisa 4:89)

They want you to be in the same level as they are.

They want to see the filth in their societies happening in ours.

They want you to be a human garbage like them.

Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection (against Allah). He will judge between you. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:3)

This ayah reminds you of another ayah (26:88).

The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)].

(Ash-Shu'ara 26:88-89)

Faraz Rabbani and Hamza Yusif allow grave worshipping.

You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).

(Al-Fatihah 1:5)

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone," except the saying of Ibrahim (Abraham) to his father: "Verily, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to do anything for you before Allah." Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust, and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return,

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:4)

When Abraham (AS) found out that his father was an enemy of Allah (SWT), he made baraa from his father.

Hence al walaa wal baraa is called millat Ibrahim.

Abu Muhammad al Maqdisi (RA) wrote a book called "Millat Ibrahim".

A real Muslim loves and hate for the sake of Allah (SWT).

A real Muslim rejects the taghoot.

You cannot be Muslim unless you reject the taghoot.

The shahada is the rejection of the taghoot then believe in Allah (SWT).

Today, Muslims are mostly told to believe in Allah (SWT) but not to reject the taghoot.

"Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the disbelievers, and forgive us, Our Lord! Verily, You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:5)
This ayah is a dua.

So the question arises from this ayah, how do we Muslims become a fitnah for the kufar?

You can become a fitna for the kufar in four ways:

A) Don't allow them to defeat you in the battlefield because they will spread more corruption in the land.

They will go deeper in their kufr

The Jews did this after defeat of Egypt under the power of Jamal Abdel Nasr who fought in the
cause of nationalism

The Tatar accepted Islam after the battle of Ayn Jalut in 1260 C.E.

The Muslims fought in the name of Allah (SWT) in those days

So they were not a fitnah for the kufar because they defeated the Tatar,

So when the kufar defeats you, they will claim they are righteous and will go deeper in their kufr

B) So live amongst the kufaar so they will ill treat you

C) If we don’t practice what we preach, we become a fitnah for them

D) When we have what the kufaar need, we become a fitnah for them

Example we have oil so we have become a fitnah for them.

Certainly, there has been in them an excellent example for you to follow, for those who look forward to (the Meeting with) Allah (for the reward from Him) and the Last Day. And whosoever turn away, then verily, Allah is Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all Praise.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:6)

Allah (SWT) is telling you in this ayah to follow Abraham (AS), which is Millat Ibrahim.

Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allah has power (over all things), and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:7)

The scholars say this ayah is talking about Abu Sufyan (RA).

Abu Sufyan (RA) was the leader of Mecca after the death of Abu Jahl.

Allah's Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Love your beloved moderately, perhaps he becomes hated to you someday. And hate whom you hate moderately, perhaps he becomes your beloved someday.” (Hasan)

[Chapters On Righteousness: Jami At-Tirmidhi]

Muhammad (SAW) married the daughter of Abu Sufyan, Umm Habiba.

Abu Sufyan embraced Islam and did not die as a kafir.

Also: Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a) said: "Do not let your love (for anyone) be obsessive and do not let your hatred (of anyone) be destructive."

(Musannaf 'Abd ar-Razzaaq)

Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:8)

It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimun (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:9)

The reason these ayahs were revealed is because Asma's (RAA) mother bought gift for her.

Asma (RAA) didn't allow her mother to enter her house.

And she didn't accept the gift from her mother because she wasn't a Muslim.

Allah (SWT) did not like this treatment so He revealed these two verses.

Allah (SWT) is telling you that you can't paint every kafir with the same brush.

Treat every kafir in his own merit.

These kafir belong in the madhab of Abu Talib.

They sympathize toward Islam.

They believe Islam is the truth in their heart.

O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them, Allah knows best as to their Faith, then if you ascertain that they are true believers, send them not back to the disbelievers, they are not lawful (wives) for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them. But give the disbelievers that (amount of money) which they have spent [as their Mahr] to them. And there will be no sin on you to marry them if you have paid their Mahr to them. Likewise hold not the disbelieving women as wives, and ask for (the return of) that which you have spent (as Mahr) and let them (the disbelievers, etc.) ask back for that which they have spent. That is the Judgement of Allah. He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:10)

At the treaty of Hudaybiyyah, there was a clause that says the kufar can live amongst the Muslim and go back to their land if they choose to.

However a Muslim cannot return to his land if he lives amongst the kufar in their land.

Umar (RA) did not understand this clause.

The prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) knew that when a kafir tastes the sweetness of iman, they won't go back.

As for those who go back, we don't need them.

This ayah was revealed for the reason of marriage, a muslimah must marry a Muslim.

Do not use the argument that the Pharaoh was married with a muslimah because this was the shariah of Musa (AS).

We follow the shariah of Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

If a sheikh performs this type of marriage is a kafir because he is making something haram halal.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728H):  “Whenever a person makes halal what is haraam by consensus or makes haraam what is halal by consensus or replaces the Sharee’ah that is agreed upon by consensus, then he is a Kaffir by the agreement of the scholars of Fiqh.” – “

{Al-Fataawa”, Vol. 3/267}

And if any of your wives have gone from you to the disbelievers, and you have an accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those whose wives have gone, the equivalent of what they had spent (on their Mahr). And fear Allah in Whom you believe.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:11)

If you are married to a wife who is idol worshipper, you must divorce her after she gives back the dowry.

If she doesn't give back the dowry, you can take your share from the war booty.

O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give you the Bai'a (pledge), that they will not associate anything in worship with Allah, that they will not steal, that they will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood (i.e. by making illegal children belonging to their husbands), and that they will not disobey you in any Ma'ruf (Islamic Monotheism and all that which Islam ordains) then accept their Bai'a (pledge), and ask Allah to forgive them, Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:12)

The pledge given to the prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) by believing women.

1) They will not commit shirk

2) They will not steal

3) They will not commit zina (fornication or adultery)

4) They will not kill their children

5) They will not utter slander intentionally

6) They will not disobey Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)

After these six things were promised to the prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would beg Allah (SWT) to forgive them.

These six things were rampant in the society.

Hind, the wife of Abu Sufyan, came to Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi was sallam) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and does not give me and my children enough provisions except when I take something from him with out his knowledge. " Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi was sallam) said, "Take what is reasonably sufficient for you and your children."

(Bukhari and Muslim)

O you who believe! Take not as friends the people who incurred the Wrath of Allah (i.e. the Jews). Surely, they have been in despair to receive any good in the Hereafter, just as the disbelievers have been in despair about those (buried) in graves (that they will not be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection).

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:13)

Allah (SWT) is saying in this ayah that the Jews have gained Allah's (SWT) anger.

The reason is that the Jews reject Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) due to racism,

Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognise him (Muhammad or the Ka'bah at Makkah) as they recognise their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it - [i.e. the qualities of Muhammad which are written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)].

(Al-Baqarah 2:146)

Next reason is that the Jews insult the prophets of Allah (SWT).

Suleiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us)."

(Al-Baqarah 2:102)

The third reason is that the Jews kill prophets.

Is it that whenever there came to you a Messenger with what you yourselves desired not, you grew arrogant? Some, you disbelieved and some, you killed.

(Al-Baqarah 2:87)

Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Verily the most painful punishment on the Day of Judgment are those who kill the prophets or people murdered by the prophet or kill one of his parents, and making statues and knowledgeable people who do not benefit from his knowledge."

[related by Bayhaqi in 'Shu'ab al-Iman' (10/288) No. 7504]

Another reason the Jews are cursed is because they insult Allah (SWT).

Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of those (Jews) who say: "Truly, Allah is poor and we are rich!" We shall record what they have said and their killing of the Prophets unjustly, and We shall say: "Taste you the torment of the burning (Fire)."

(Aali Imran 3:181)

The Jews say: "Allah's Hand is tied up (i.e. He does not give and spend of His Bounty)."

(Al-Ma'idah 5:64)

Another reason the Jews are cursed is because they are the greatest enemy of the ummah.

Verily, you will find the strongest among men in enmity to the believers (Muslims) the Jews and those who are Al-Mushrikun (see V.2:105), and you will find the nearest in love to the believers (Muslims) those who say: "We are Christians." That is because amongst them are priests and monks, and they are not proud.

(Al-Ma'idah 5:82)

Another reason the Jews are cursed is because they write the book with their own hands and claim it is from Allah (SWT).

Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, "This is from Allah," to purchase with it a little price! Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for that they earn thereby.

(Al-Baqarah 2:79)

Another reason the Jews are cursed is because their rabbi made up a new religion for them which Allah (SWT) did not reveal.

They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah).

(At-Tawbah 9:31)

The rabbi wrote the Talmud which is the most racist book.

Or even do they have associates (with Allah) who have legislated for them as the religion that which Allah has not given permission? And had it not been for the Word of Verdict, indeed it would have been decreed between them, and surely the unjust will have a painful torment.

(Ash-Shura 42:21) Dr. Ghali
