TAFSIR Surah SHAMS {Audio & Noted} {FEB 10 2014}

FEB 10 2014 / 10 RABI AL THANI 1435 HIJRI

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا
And by the sun and its brightness;

(Ash-Shams 91:1)

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا
And by the moon as it follows it (the sun);

(Ash-Shams 91:2)

- This surah has all the characteristics of Makkan surahs because it is short and talking about previous prophets.

- This surah is talking about the sun

- Allah (SWT) can swear by anything He wants to swear by because He is Allah the creator of everything - He can swear by anything He wants to swear by?

Ibn 'Umar (RA) said: I heard a man saying: "No, by the Ka'bah." I admonished him: 'Do not swear by any thing besides Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying, "He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk."'

[Sunan Tirmidhi (4/110) No. 1535, Musnad Ahmad (2/125) No. 6072, Sunan Abu Dawud (3/223) No. 3251, Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/330) No. 7814]

But you the Muslim (the creation) cannot swear by anything except Allah (SWT).

You are not allowed to say "I swear by my mothers grave.

Allah (SWT) would never swear by a thing unless the thing was important.

Allah (SWT) swears by the sun because the sun is important.

Without the sun we would all freeze to death.

It's because of the sun we have the alternation of night and day.

Whenever the Muslim debates with an atheist, his first argument is about the sun.

The Muslim says to the atheist, if the sun were close to us we would die of intense heat.

If the sun was too far from us we would freeze to death.

The sun is positioned above our heads carefully, meticulously, accurately, fastidiously

Therefore the world did not come about by accident.

The world came about by intelligent design.

We do not believe in Darwinism.

Some people call themselves sun worshippers.

But we are not allowed to worship the sun.

And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.

(Fussilat 41:37)

When the Christians say Muslim worship the sun and moon, they slander the Muslim.

They intend to put out the Light of Allah (i.e. the religion of Islam, this Qur'an, and Prophet Muhammad SAW) with their mouths. But Allah will complete His Light even though the disbelievers hate (it). He it is Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islamic Monotheism) to make it victorious over all (other) religions even though the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad SAW) hate (it).

(As-Saff 61:8-9)

These two ayahs are called qadr of Allah (SWT).

People cannot stop what is predestined.

In the Arabic language words are masculine or feminine

The sun is feminine and the moon is masculine

Allah (SWT) says the moon chases after the sun; because the sun has what it needs.

Blessed be He Who has placed in the heaven big stars, and has placed therein a great lamp (sun), and a moon giving light.

(Al-Furqan 25:61)

In the above mentioned ayahs; never has Allah (SWT) described the moon as a great lamp.

The moon is just a munir.

The moon is a reflector, it has no light of its own.

The moon reflects the light of the sun.

So because of that Allah (SWT) didn't call the moon a great lamp.

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا

And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness;

(Ash-Shams 91:3)

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا
And by the night as it conceals it (the sun);

(Ash-Shams 91: 4)

Allah (SWT) is swearing by the day as it shows up the light of the sun.

The purpose of the day is for you to go out and earn your livelihood.

And have made the night as a covering (through its darkness),

(An-Naba 78:10)

- And the purpose of the night is for you to take rest.

And have made the day for livelihood. (An-Naba 78:11)

-Even though Allah (SWT) swears by the night, He also commanded us to seek refuge from the night.

-Because people use the night to spread mischief on the earth.

Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak, "From the evil of what He has created; "And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away). "And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots, "And from the evil of the envier when he envies."

(Al-Falaq 113:1-5)

People use the night to kill and rape women.

When it is night you cannot see properly; people use the night to do armed robbery.

If a person robs you, you can fight them.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if a man comes wanting to take my property? He said: “Do not give him your property.” He said: What if he fights me? He said: “Fight him.” He said: What if he kills me? He said: “Then you will be a martyr.” He said: What if I kill him? He said: “He will be in Hell.”

[Sahih Muslim (Vol. 1, pg. 124) No. 140] & {Trans Sahih Muslim Book 1 Chapter 63 Hadith 259}

Don't give them your wealth; your property is sacred.

Narrated By Jabir bin Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "When night falls (or it is evening), keep your children close to you for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night elapses, you can let them free. Close the doors and mention the Name of Allah, for Satan does not open a closed door."

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 54, Hadith #523]

When night comes people fall into three categories

1. He goes to his bed immediately

2. He establishes salah and reads Quran

3. He does haram activities

Allah (SWT) spoke about the earth in the above hadith;

And the mountains as pegs?

(An-Naba 78:7)

Mountains keep the earth still so that the earth doesn't move when you walk around.

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا
And by the heaven and Him Who built it

(Ash-Shams 91: 5)

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا
And by the earth and Him Who spread it,

(Ash-Shams 91: 6)

Allah (SWT) is speaking about the human soul.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (RA) wrote a book about the human soul.

And they ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning the Ruh (the Spirit); Say: "The Ruh (the Spirit) : it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little."

(Al-Isra 17:85)
The human soul is like the blue flame inside the charcoal; without the blue flame inside the charcoal, the charcoal is dead.

The human soul can travel and see everything.

Have you been to a place and said you have been there before.

Have you met someone and said you have met them before.

You experience dejavu.

Because the soul is a separate entity from your body.

The crew recognized Al-Khadir and took them on board without fare. Then a sparrow came and stood on the edge of the boat and dipped its beak once or twice in the sea. Al-Khadir said: "O Moses! My knowledge and your knowledge have not decreased Allah's knowledge except as much as this sparrow has decreased the water of the sea with its beak."...

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 3, Hadith #124]

Men with this soul example: George Bush, Tony Blair, Ariel Sharon.

These three men were given to us by democracy.

These men are war criminals.

Whenever a person has Nafs Ammara they live a wretched life.

They look 10 years older.

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'an nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." He will say: "O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)."

(Ta-Ha 20:124-125)

(Allah) will say: "Like this, Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allah's Mercy)."

 (Ta-Ha 20:126)

Narrated By 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud the Prophet (SAW) saying: "A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which, he is afraid, may fall on him; whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose and he just drives them away like this."

[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 75, Hadith #320]

For every human soul the people use these talk shows to take away the guilt.

They talk about homosexuality to entertain people.

The Kuffar use talk shows to take away the guilt of homosexuality, lesbianism, and such sins.

So that these things are no longer a taboo.

People still know good from bad.

We inspire every human soul to know good from bad.

You don't have to be a Muslim to know that stealing is wrong.

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا
And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), And Him Who perfected him in proportion;

(Ash-Shams 91:7)

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;

(Ash-Shams 91: 8)

You can be a Hindu, Buddhist or Jew and know that it is wrong.

You don't have to be a Muslim to know that it is wrong to rape kids.

Common criminals in prison don't accept some crimes.

The pharaoh knew good from bad.

The Pharaoh believed Musa brought the truth.

And they belied them (those Ayat) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their ownselves were convinced thereof [i.e. those (Ayat) are from Allah, and Musa (Moses) is the Messenger of Allah in truth, but they disliked to obey Musa (Moses), and hated to believe in his Message of Monotheism]. So see what was the end of the Mufsidun (disbelievers, disobedient to Allah, evil-doers, liars.).

(An-Naml 27:14)

Even though he believed in his heart he died a kuffar.

Iman is more than just conviction of the heart.

Iman has three dimensions.

Iman is of three dimensions.

1. Conviction of the heart

2. Declaration of the tongue
3. Implementation with the limbs.

The Pharaoh believed with his heart, but he did not declare nor implement with his limbs, so he died as kafir.

He believed with his heart but he didn't practice declaration of the tongue and implantation with the limbs.

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا
Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).

(Ash-Shams 91:9)

The above mentioned Ayah is clear evidence that when a person dabbles in haram he destroys himself spiritually, especially if he has an addiction.

Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.

(Al-Mutaffifin 83:14)

Abu Al-Ja'd (meaning Ad-Damri) narrated, and he was a Companion according to the claim of Muhammad bin Amr: the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'Whoever neglects the Friday prayer three times (in a row) without an excuse, then Allah sets a seal upon his heart.'"

[Sunan Tirmidhi (2/373) No. 500, Musnad Ahmad (3/424) No. 15537, Sunan Abu Dawud (1/277) No. 1052, Sunan al-Nasa'i (3/88 No. 1369, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/213) No. 1125, Sunan al-Darime (1/444) No. 1571, Muwatta Malik (1/180) No. 468]

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا
And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).

(Ash-Shams 91:10)

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا

Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin).

(Ash-Shams 91:11)

Allah (SWT) sent the people of Salih (AS) to them.

They gave prophet Salih (AS) a challenge.

"If you are a real prophet then why don't you make a camel come out of a rock"

Because they were Arabs, living outside of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia

Salih (AS) asked them "Would you believe if I make it happen? They said “yes we would believe"

Prophet Salih (AS) prayed and the camel came out of the rock but they went back on their word

They companied the camel was too big.

"Your camel is drinking too much from the well" (it was impossible to please them).

They always came with a new complaint.

إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا

When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).

(Ash-Shams 91:12)

So they started to think/talk about killing the camel.

Prophet Salih (AS) heard their plan and he said "this is the she camel of Allah (SWT)"

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا
But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!"

(Ash-Shams 91:13)

When the men heard the offer to kill the camel, its fitna of women.

A woman with three daughters said "any man who kills the she camel of Salih (AS), I will give him my most beautiful daughter to marry"

They killed the camel; not only did they kill the she camel but they started to plot to kill prophet Salih (AS) himself.

Only the Ummah of Yunus (AS) abandoned their kufr and returned to Islam.

When they heard about Chastisement of Allah (SWT).

The people of Yunus (AS) are unique in this regard.

So when they killed the she camel, Allah (SWT) reigned upon them fire and brimstone, destroyed them from above with chastisement.

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا

Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!

(Ash-Shams 91:14)

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allah is Severe in punishment.

(Al-Anfal 8:25)

Those who fail to forbid the wrong and enjoin the right will be enveloped in the sin and they will be enveloped in the Retribution of Allah (SWT).

On the authority of Abu Umar who said: Allah sent two angels to destroy a township with a natural disaster, but when they got there they found a man praying in the mosque. They went back to Allah and said: 'O Allah we found a man praying in the mosque.' Allah said to the two angels: 'Go back and destroy the township with that man as well because not once did he ever frown when he saw the people indulging in haram.'

[Ibnul Qayyim, al-Jawaab al-Kaafi (Vol. 1, pg. 46)]

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا

And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.

(Ash-Shams 91:15)
