- According to ibn Abbas (RA) Uzair (AS) was a prophet.

- He passed by a town riding on his donkey and he entered the town and dismounted his donkey and the town was dilapidated.

- Such town is referred to as a ghost town so he made a statement "how can Allah (SWT) bring back this town after it was completely destroyed?" according to Ibn Kathir.

- Uzair (AS) did not doubt Allah's (SWT) power rather he was curious about it; so when he made this statement.

- Allah (SWT) caused him to die he remained dead for 100 years.

- The angel of death took his soul [he was 40 years old]; while he was dead for 100 years; his food and drink remained as is it did not decompose after 100 years.

- Allah (SWT) ordered another angel to bring him back to life; that angel asked Uzair (AS) "how long were you sleeping?"

- Uzair (AS) replied for a day or half a day.

- Uzair (AS) did not realize he was gone for 100 years.

- The angel told Uzair (AS) that he was sleeping for 100 years

Or like the one who passed by a town and it had tumbled over its roofs. He said: "Oh! How will Allah ever bring it to life after its death?" So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long did you remain (dead)?" He (the man) said: "(Perhaps) I remained (dead) a day or part of a day". He said: "Nay, you have remained (dead) for a hundred years, look at your food and your drink, they show no change; and look at your donkey! And thus We have made of you a sign for the people. Look at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh". When this was clearly shown to him, he said, "I know (now) that Allah is Able to do all things."

(Al-Baqarah 2:259)

- So Uzair (AS) concluded that: "I know, now, that Allah (SWT) is able to do all things".

- After this event, Uzair (AS) went back to his people.

- No one from his community recognize him, because he disappeared for 100 years.

- He went to his house to find his maid who was now crippled and blind.

- Uzair (AS) asked the maid "is this the house of Uzair?"

- The maid replied "yes, but no body talks about Uzair no more, he is far gone"

- Uzair (AS) said "I am Uzair (AS), Allah (SWT) caused me to die for 100 years and brought me back".

- The maid said "every time Uzair (AS) made a dua, Allah (SWT) answer. So if you are really Uzair (AS) make dua for my eyesight". So Uzair (AS) made dua and she was able to see again and also walk again.

- His maid ran to the assembly of the Israelites announcing "Uzair (AS) is back" but people claimed that she was a liar.

- She said "I am his maid, I was blind and crippled, and he made dua for me and now I am able to see and walk again" then Uzair (AS) came to the assembly.

- He saw his son who was now 118 years old.

- This son said "my father has a distinct mark on his back between his shoulder blade"

- They saw this birthmark and confirmed that this was indeed Uzair (AS) everyone was over joyed for his return.

- While Uzair (AS) was gone Nebuchadnezzar invaded Jerusalem and killed all the scholars and burnt all the Torahs.

- No body memorized the torah except Uzair (AS); So the community asked Uzair (AS) to write the torah for them.

- Uzair (AS) sat under a tree and rewrote the entire torah for them.

- This is the reason some Jews claim that Uzair (AS) is the son of God

And the Jews say: 'Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah's Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!

(At-Tawbah 9:30)

- Some scholar say the Jews simply meant he is a righteous man by saying he is the son of God.

- This is not the same concept as the Christians who claim Isa (AS) is the son of God.

- Uzair (AS) lived between Suleiman (AS) and Zachariah (AS), he came after Suleiman (AS) but before Zachariah (AS).

Narrated from the Hadith of Yunus Ibn Yazid after Az-Zuhri after Sa'id and Abu Salamah after Abu Hurairah; also it was narrated by Shu' aib after Abu Az- Zinad after Al-A'raj after Abu Hurairah as saying: Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: "An ant had bitten a Prophet (one amongst the earlier Prophets) and he ordered that the colony of the ants should be burnt. And Allah revealed to him: Because of an ant's bite you have burnt a community from amongst the communities which sings My glory ".This Prophet was narrated to be 'Uzair by Ishaq Ibn Bishr after Ibn Juraij afterMuhammad Ibn 'Abdel Wahhab Ibn Mujahid after his father; also this was narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) and Al-Hasan Al Basri. Allah knows best!

{The Group, all but At-Tirmidhi,}

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: An ant had bitten a Prophet (one amongst the earlier Prophets) and he ordered that the colony of the ants should be burnt. And Allah revealed to him:" Because of an ant's bite you have burnt a community from amongst the communities which sings My glory."

[The Book on Salutations and Greetings (Kitab As-Salam)' of Sahih Muslim.]

There are 13 lessons to be learnt from the story of Uzair (AS).

THERE ARE 13 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF UZAIR (AS)

LESSON #1: TOWN CAN BECOME A GHOST TOWN DUE TO NATURAL DISASTER [EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMI, etc]

Uzair (AS) was shocked by the sight of such town; towns can also be evacuated due to poor economy or natural disasters.

- Many towns in the USA are ghost town due to poor economy

LESSON #2: DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THE POWER OF ALLAH

They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him. And on the Day of Resurrection the whole of the earth will be grasped by His Hand[] and the heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glorified is He, and High is He above all that they associate as partners with Him!

(Az-Zumar 39:67)

(Allah) said: "O Iblis (Satan)! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands. Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the highly exalted?"

(Sad 38:75)

- Do not dwell too much about Allah's (SWT) two hands, read it, believe it, and leave it.

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “A man who had never done a pious deed said to his family members, ‘When I die burn me to ashes and divide the ashes into two parts. Scatter one of them on land and the other in the ocean. By Allah! If Allah gets hold over this body, He will punish it as severely as He may not have punished anyone else.’ When he died, his family members obeyed his instructions. Allah commanded the land to gather his ashes and it collected every particle of his ashes on it. And He commanded the ocean and it too gathered all particles even from its depths. (Then He gave it life and speech and) He asked him, ‘Why did you do that?’ He said, ‘My Lord! Fear of You!’ So Allah forgave him.”

[Sahih Bukhari]

- People under estimate the power of Allah (SWT).

Mujahid narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) said: “Allah created four things with His Hand; 1. The Throne 2. The Pen 3. Aadam and 4. The paradise of ‘Adn. He then said to the rest of the creation ‘Kun’ [Be] and it was.”

[Adh Dhahabi in ‘Mukhtasar al-‘Uluw’ (p105), Abu al-Shaikh al-Asbahani in 'al-‘Adhuma' (5/1555), Tafsir al-Tabari (21/239), ‘The chain is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim.’]

Abdullah ibn `Amr reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Your Mega Ramadan Change Project Fasting and the Qur'an will intercede on behalf of Allah's servant on the Day of Judgment: Fasting will say, "O my Lord! I prevented him from food and desires during the day, so accept my intercession for him." And the Qur'an will say, "O my Lord! I prevented him from sleeping by night, so accept my intercession for him." The intercession of both will thus be accepted.

(Ahmad and authenticated by Al-Albani)

The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.”

[An authentic hadith found in At-Tabaraanee, on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood]“

- We believe Ramadan will be a witness for us and the Quran will be a witness for us; we don't ask how.

Abdullah ibn 'Amr reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW), said: "The fast and the Qur'an are two intercessors for the servant of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: 'O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.' The Qur'an will say: 'I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.' And their intercession will be accepted."

[Musnad Ahmad (2/174) No. 6626, Mustadrak al-Haakim (1/740) No. 2036, Shu'ab al-Eman al-Bayhaqi (3/378) No. 1839

- Because Allah (SWT) has power over all things.

When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake And the earth discharges its burdens And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?" That Day, it will report its news

(Az-Zalzalah 99:1-4) Sahih International

- No Muslim will doubt these intercession of different things because we don't limit the power of Allah (SWT).

This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn. (It is said that one's left thigh will be the first to bear the witness).

(Ya-Sin 36:65)

LESSON #3: SOMETIME ALLAH MAKES AN EXAMPLE OUT OF A PERSON

- To teach the later generation Allah (SWT) may make an example out of someone.

- Example the Pharaoh; the body of the Pharaoh is preserved.

- This is a lesson for the later generation; so Allah (SWT) made an example out of Uzair (AS).

LESSON #4: IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A DEAD MAN TO KNOW HOW LONG HE WAS DEAD FOR

- The angel had to tell him that he was sleeping for 100 years.

LESSON #5: SOME PROPHET RODE ON A DONKEY

- This is a sign of humility, even the prophet Muhammed () rode on a donkey
- Prophet Muhammed () visited the leader of the hypocrites Abdullah ibn Ubayy on a donkey.

- The hypocrite tried to embarrass the prophet () because of that.

- This hypocrite also slandered the prophet's wife.

And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them both, but if one of them rebels against the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it complies with the Command of Allah; then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allah loves those who are equitable.

(Al-Hujurat 49:9)

Anas reports: “It was suggested to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he should visit Abdullah ibn Ubayy. The Prophet went to see him, riding a donkey, and a number of Muslims went out with him, walking through an area with bad smell. When the Prophet was with him, he said to the Prophet: ‘Stay at a distance. By God, your donkey’s smell is terrible.’ A man from the Ansar said to Abdullah: ‘By God! The stinking of the Prophet’s donkey is more pleasant than your smell.’”

(Related by Ahmad, Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

- He had a personal grudge against Muhammed () because before Muhammed () came to Medina, he was a king; he was known as King Salul.

- Then he was known as a king without any throne and when the prophet Muhammed () prayed his janaza, it was a mistake.

And never (O Muhammad SAW) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were Fasiqun (rebellious, - disobedient to Allah and His Messenger SAW).

(At-Tawbah 9:84)

Verily! Those who brought forth the slander (against 'Aishah the wife of the Prophet SAW) are a group among you. Consider it not a bad thing for you. Nay, it is good for you. Unto every man among them will be paid that which he had earned of the sin, and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be a great torment.

(An-Nur 24:11)

LESSON #6: IT IS POSSIBLE TO FORGET SOMEONE AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME

- His community forgot Uzair (AS)

LESSON #7: SOMEONE CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY THEIR BIRTH MARK

- The son of Uzair (AS) who was 118 years old, said "my father had a birth mark between his shoulder blade".

- Hence he identified his father using his birthmark.

- The Syrian monk Buhaira recognized Muhammed () by his birthmark.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: "Abu Talib departed to Ash-Sham, and the Prophet (ﷺ) left with him, along with some older men from the Quraish. And I can recognize him by the seal of the Prophet-hood which is below his shoulder blade, like an apple.' Then he went back, and made them some food, and when he brought it to them, he [the Prophet (ﷺ)] was tending to the camels.

{Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 49, Hadith 3980}

LESSON #8: KIDS BENEFIT FROM THE HONOUR OF THEIR PARENTS

- When Uzair (AS) was gone his son was leader of their community; the leader of the assembly was the sons of Uzair (AS).

LESSON #9: THE DU'A OF PROPHETS IS ANSWERED IN MOST CASES

- Uzair (AS) made dua for his maid and the old maid was cured.

Uthman ibn Haneef (RA) narrated: "A man who was blind came to the Prophet and requested him to pray to Allah that He may cure me of my blindness. He said, 'If you wish, but if you be patient, that is better for you.' He said that the Prophet (SAW) may pray for him. So, the Prophet (SAW) commanded him to make ablution and make it very well and pray in these words, 'O Allah, I ask you and plead to you through your Prophet Muhammad, Prophet of mercy, I plead by your virtue O my Lord, for my need, this one that it be granted to me. O Allah, accept his intercession for me.'"

[Tirmidhi 3589, Ibn Majah 1385, Ahmed 17240]

- Prophet Muhammad () made dua for a blind and this person was cured also.

LESSON #10: PROPHETS WERE BLESSED WITH MIRACLES

- Prophets (SAWS) were blessed with miracles to prove their prophecies.

- Musa's (AS) miracle was the rod.

- Yunus's (AS) miracle was the fact he survived the belly of the fish for seven days.

- Uzair (AS) cured the blind maid.

- Muhammed () split the moon.

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad SAW to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: "This is continuous magic." They belied (the Verses of Allah, this Qur'an), and followed their own lusts. And every matter will be settled [according to the kind of deeds (for the doer of good deeds, his deeds will take him to Paradise, and similarly evil deeds will take their doers to Hell)].

(Al-Qamar 54:2-3)

LESSON #11: YOU MAY DO TAWASSUL WITH THE DU'A OF A RIGHTEOUS PERSON

- The maid requested du'a of Uzair (AS)

- The word tawassul means to draw near to Allah (SWT)

O you who believe! Do your duty to Allah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach to Him, and strive hard in His Cause as much as you can. So that you may be successful.

(Al-Ma'idah 5:35)

- You call upon Allah (SWT) using his 99 names and attributes

- Asif Bin Barkhiyah was a regular believer who brought the throne of Bilqis by the blinking of an eye because he knew how to call upon Allah using His names and attributes

- You may use your previous good deeds to call upon Allah (SWT).

- You may also promise Allah (SWT) but if you fail to fulfil the oath, it is necessary upon your family to fulfil the oath.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "While three men were walking, It started raining and they took shelter (refuge) in a cave in a mountain. A big rock rolled down from the mountain and closed the mouth of the cave. They said to each other, "Think of good deeds which you did for Allah's sake only, and invoke Allah by giving reference to those deeds so that He may remove this rock from you." One of them said, 'O Allah! I had old parents and small children and I used to graze the sheep for them. On my return to them in the evening, I used to milk (the sheep) and start providing my parents first of all before my children. One day I was delayed and came late at night and found my parents sleeping. I milked (the sheep) as usual and stood by their heads. I hated to wake them up and disliked to give milk to my children before them, although my children were weeping (because of hunger) at my feet till the day dawned. O Allah! If I did this for Your sake only, kindly remove the rock so that we could see the sky through it.' So, Allah removed the rock a little and they saw the sky. The second man said, 'O Allah! I was in love with a cousin of mine like the deepest love a man may have for a woman. I wanted to outrage her chastity but she refused unless I gave her one hundred Dinars. So, I struggled to collect that amount. And when I sat between her legs, she said, 'O Allah's slave! Be afraid of Allah and do not deflower me except rightfully (by marriage).' So, I got up. O Allah! If I did it for Your sake only, please remove the rock.' The rock shifted a little more. Then the third man said, 'O Allah! I employed a laborer for a Faraq of rice and when he finished his job and demanded his right, I presented it to him, but he refused to take it. So, I sowed the rice many time till I gathered cows and their shepherd (from the yield). (Then after some time) He came and said to me, 'Fear Allah (and give me my right)." I said, 'Go and take those cows and the shepherd.' He said, 'Be afraid of Allah! Don't mock at me.' I said, 'I am not mocking at you. Take (all that).' So, he took all that. O Allah! If I did that for Your sake only, please remove the rest of the rock.' So, Allah removed the rock."

{Sahih al-Bukhari (2333) Vol. 3, Book 39, Hadith 526}

LESSON #12: ANIMALS PRAISE ALLAH

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: An ant had bitten a Prophet (one amongst the earlier Prophets) and he ordered that the colony of the ants should be burnt. And Allah revealed to him:" Because of an ant's bite you have burnt a community from amongst the communities which sings My glory."

[The Book on Salutations and Greetings (Kitab As-Salam)' of Sahih Muslim]

- Uzair (AS) destroyed an entire ant farm because he got bitten by one ant.

- Allah (SWT) said how could you do that those ants praise me.

LESSON #13: PEOPLE LIKE TO EXAGGERATE IN THEIR ADMIRATION OF PIOUS ONES

- Because the Jews claimed Uzair (AS) was the son of Allah (SWT) because he re-wrote the entire Torah.

Surely, they have disbelieved who say: "Allah is the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary)." But the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: "O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers.

(Al-Ma'idah 5:72)

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet (SAW), heard a man praise another man and he was using exaggeration in his praise of him. The Prophet (SAW), said, "You have destroyed or broken the man's back."

[Al-Bukhari (5337) and Muslim (7141)]

Say (O Muhammad SAW) : "O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path."

(Al-Ma'idah 5:77)

- People like to exaggerate their admiration.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The anger on those who took the graves of their Prophets as places of prostration was terrible."

[Muwatta Malik (1/223) No. 570, Musannaf Abdur Razzaq (1/406) No. 1587, Musnad Ahmad (2/246) No. 7352]

- The Christians raised Isa (AS) to God status in year 325 CE.

He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have children when He has no wife? He created all things and He is the All-Knower of everything.

(Al-An'am 6:101)

And they say: "The Most Beneficent (Allah) has begotten a son (or offspring or children) [as the Jews say: 'Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say that He has begotten a son ['Iesa (Christ)], and the pagan Arabs say that He has begotten daughters (angels, etc.)]." Indeed you have brought forth (said) a terrible evil thing. Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins, That they ascribe a son (or offspring or children) to the Most Beneficent (Allah). But it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Beneficent (Allah) that He should beget a son (or offspring or children).

(Maryam 19:88-92)
