- What is the meaning of mu’tazila?

- Hasan al Basri was in the masjid in Iraq giving a dars when someone told him he heard Muslims making takfir on some Muslims whilst others were giving them hope.

- They called them kaafirs because of their major sins but others gave them hope.

- Hasan al Basri was asked what the status of the man who perpetrated a major sin was.

- Waasil ibn Ataa said that the perpetrator of a major sin is on the fence, neither a Muslim nor a kaafir.

- He answered before Hasan al Basri could answer.

- This classification was shocking to Hasan al Basri.

- Wasil ibn Ataa and Hasan al Basri differed in aqeedah.

- Wasil withdrew himself from Hasan al Basri.

- The word i'tazala means to withdraw.

- This is what Hasan al Basri said Wasil ibn Ataa had done, that he withdrew from them.

- So he was given the nickname the Mu'tazila.

- Wasil ibn Ataa started his own study circle with Amr ibn Ubayd and developed their own aqeedah.

- A lot of their aqeedah came from Greek philosophy.

- Because of this, a lot of their aqeedah is atrocious.

- They came up with a new category which is called manzila bayna manzilatain (on the fence).

- This is bid’ah because Allah has divided mankind into three categories in the Quran and it is impossible to find a fourth.

- Allah said a person is a Muslim, a kaafir or a hypocrite; there is not another category.

- Every scholar will tell you the innovator is worse than the sinner.

- A person may say they have found a fourth category, the faasiq.

- We say to them the word faasiq means a sinful Muslim.

- Another would say what about the faajir?

- We say to them the faasiq and faajir are one and the same.

- A person would say they have found a fourth category: a muwahhid.

- We say to them a muwahhid is a person on authentic tauheed so the muwahhid is a real Muslim. So you still have not found a fourth category.

- They say the deviant is the fourth category but we say a deviant is a Muslim.

- A person will be in the hellfire forever for major kufr.

- If his kufr is minor, he will come out with the shafa'ah of Muhammad.

Abu Hurayrah narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The Jews were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and the Christians were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects.” [Sunan Abu Dawud (4/197) No. 4596, Sunan Tirmidhi (5/25) No. 2640, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/128) No. 3991, Musnad Ahmad (2/332) No. 8377]

- If they ask about if the 72 sects will be in the hellfire forever, the answer is ‘it depends’.

- What about the murtad? Is this a fourth category?

- A murtad is an apostate; he will be in the hellfire forever. So a murtad is a kaafir.

- What about the mushrik?

- A mushrik is a pagan who ascribes partners to Allah so he is a kaafir.

- What about a zindeeq?

- He is a heretic who makes up his own religion so he is a kaafir, e.g. Elijah Muhammad and Farrakhan.

- What about a mulhid?

- A mulhid is an atheist so he is also a kaafir.

- There still is no fourth category.

- They believe the perpetrator of a major sin is a kaafir and in the hereafter he will be in the hellfire forever.

- Some are surprised to know that Bukhari collected hadith form khawaarij.

- He collected hadith from them because they do not lie.

- They believe when you lie you become a kaafir.

- None of the 4 great imams collected hadith from the Shiites because they lie.

- Their religion allows them to lie.

- Their belief is that the perpetrator of a major sin is a Muslim perfect in iman and it is fard on Allah to give them Jannah because he recites the shahada.

- They quote Surah An-Nisa verse 48 as thier hujjah:

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. (An-Nisa 4:48)

- They think it is fard 0n Allah to forgive them for major sins because they recite the shahada.

- We refute them with the exact same ayah with the part ''to whom He pleases''. They skip over this part.

- They hang on to this verse.

- Allah said He will grant forgiveness to whom He pleases.

- They say a person who commits major sins is on the fence, neither a Muslim nor a kaafir.

Narrated By 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: During the lifetime of the Prophet there was a man called 'Abdullah whose nickname was Donkey, and he used to make Allah's Apostle laugh. The Prophet lashed him because of drinking (alcohol). And one-day he was brought to the Prophet on the same charge and was lashed. On that, a man among the people said, "O Allah, curse him ! How frequently he has been brought (to the Prophet on such a charge)!" The Prophet said, "Do not curse him, for by Allah, I know for he loves Allah and His Apostle." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 81, Hadith #771]

- The Prophet confirmed the iman of this man.

- This above-mentioned hadith is to refute what the mu’tazila say.

- It is worthy of mentioning that the mu'tazila say that the perpetrator of a major sin will be in the hellfire forever.

- By you promising this sinner the hellfire forever you have made takfir on him, because only kuffar will be in the hellfire forever.

- They preach jabr.

- They preach that the perpetrator of a major sin should not be punished for his sin because it was Allah who predestined for him to commit that major sin.

- So they say man should be stripped of all responsibility.

- They say you can do anything and blame Allah because He predestined what you would do.

Those who took partners (in worship) with Allah will say: "If Allah had willed, we would not have taken partners (in worship) with Him, nor would our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything (against His Will)." Likewise belied those who were before them, (they argued falsely with Allah's Messengers), till they tasted of Our Wrath. Say: "Have you any knowledge (proof) that you can produce before us? Verily, you follow nothing but guess and you do nothing but lie." (Al-An'am 6:148)

- They say you can't blame someone for cheating on his wife because it was predestined.

- Ask them if a paedophile abducted their daughter, raped and killed her, would they say to the judge not to punish him because it was predestined?

- If they wouldn’t use qadr to set their brother free, why you use it to set yourself free? This is double standards.

It is reported that a man stole, he said to Umar: "I stole because this was the Qada’ of Allah (Divine Will of Allah)." Umar said to him: "I am going to chop off your hand because it was the Qada’ of Allah (Divine Will of Allah)." [Ibn Taymiyyah in ‘Minhaj as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah’ (3/234)]

- This is the correct creed.

- We say that in the dunya he is a fasiq.

- His staus is a faasiq.

- On Judgement Day he is under the mercy of Allah.

- If Allah wants He can forgive him or send him to the hellfire for a while.

- Any other aqeedah than this is zandaqa.

- We take this stance because of Surah An-Nisa verse 48.

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. (An-Nisa 4:48)

- He is under Allah’s mercy on the day of judgement.

- These are those who are prone to debate.

- They are people who are harshly cantankerous.

- This means those who reject Allah's 99 names and attributes.

- They deny qadr.

- They are rationalists; they rationalize the deen.

- They are the philosophers

- They call themselves this.

- The other 5 names are given to them by their enemies.

- The sixth name is what they call themselves.

- They say by rejecting Allah's 99 names and attributes they are upon firm tawheed.

- They say each name of Allah is a different god.

- Tenet means a doctrine which your religion is based upon

- They claim that each of Allah’s names is a god in itself.

- They say they can’t believe in these names.

- They say they are committing shirk if they believe in these names.

And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do. (Al-A'raf 7:180)

- In the above mentioned ayah, Allah commands us to call Him by His beautiful names.

And when you (Muhammad SAW) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'an) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.). (Al-An'am 6:68)

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever 'ahsaha' (enumerates them, believes in them, ponders their meanings, worships Allah by them and supplicates with them, and acts by them according to one's belief in them) will enter Paradise.” [al-Bukhari (7392) and Muslim (2677)]

- The Prophet also has many names.

- Are they saying we have lots of prophets?

- The reason why they reject the 99 names is because the Arab Christians told them they were worshiping 99 gods.

- The Arab Christians are wrong with this accusation.

'Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Muhammad Ibn Habeeb Ibn Abee Habeeb on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather [who] said: I witnessed Khaalid Ibn 'Abdullah Al-Qasree - and he addressed them at Waasit - "Oh People, make sacrifice, may Allah accept it from you. Verily I am sacrificing Al-Ja'd Ibn Dirham, for indeed he claims that Allah did not take Ibrahim as a khaleel (close friend), and [that] He did not speak to Moosa. Most Perfect is He and exalted is He from what Al-Ja'd says." Then he descended and slaughtered him. I say: And the Jahmiyyah and Mu'tazilah speak with this, and they distort the text of the revelation regarding that, and they claim that the Lord is purified of that (i.e. having spoken to Moses and taken Ibrahim as a khalil). [Mukhtasar al-Uluww of adh-Dhahabi, (p.134)]

- They practice ta'weel.

- This means to interpret the names of Allah to mean other than their meanings.

(Allah) said: "O Iblis (Satan)! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands. Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the highly exalted?" (Sad 38:75)

- They don't believe that Allah has two hands.

- The clock on the wall has two hands but the hands are not like our hands, why can't they think that Allah's hands are not like our hands?

- They don't want to believe that Allah has two eyes. They find this belief repugnant.

- They say we are giving Allah body parts.

'Abdullah bin 'Umar (RA) said: One day the Messenger of Allah (SAW) mentioned Al-Masih Dajjal (the Antichrist) in the presence of the people and said, "Verily, Allah is not one-eyed but Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal is blind in the right eye which looks like a swollen grape." [al-Bukhari (7127) and Muslim (169)]

- The above hadith is used by ibn hanbal to state that Allah has two eyes.

- We don’t say Allah has a body, we say Allah's dhaat (person).

- No scholar says Allah has a body.

- Never use body to describe Allah.

- They don't want to believe that Allah becomes jealous.

Narrated Al-Mughira: Sa'd bin 'Ubada said, "If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him (behead him) with the blade of my sword." This news reached Allah's Messenger (SAW) who then said, "You people are astonished at Sa'd's Ghira. By Allah, I have more Ghira than he, and Allah has more Ghira than I, and because of Allah's Ghira, He has made unlawful Shameful deeds and sins (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) done in open and in secret. And there is none who likes that the people should repent to Him and beg His pardon than Allah, and for this reason He sent the warners and the givers of good news. And there is none who likes to be praised more than Allah does, and for this reason, Allah promised to grant Paradise (to the doers of good)." [al-Bukhari (7416) and Muslim (1499)]

- They don't want to believe in Allah's Shin even though Allah says on that day He will expose His Shin.

Remember) the Day when the Shin shall be laid bare (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) and they shall be called to prostrate (to Allāh), but they (hypocrites) shall not be able to do so, (Al-Qalam 68:42)

Narrated By Abu Said: I heard the Prophet saying, "Allah will bring forth the severest Hour, and then all the Believers, men and women, will prostrate themselves before Him, but there will remain those who used to prostrate in the world for showing off and for gaining good reputation. Such people will try to prostrate (on the Day of Judgment) but their back swill be as stiff as if it is one bone (a single vertebra)." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 6, Book 60, Hadith #441]

- This creed that man creates his own actions is shirk because Allah is the Creator of actions.

"While Allah has created you and what you make!" (As-Saffat 37:96)

- They reject faith in qadr; they are called qadariyya by their enemies.

- This is also shirk because of the hadith:

He asked “O Muhammad, what is faith”? He said, “It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers (peace be upon them all), in the Last Day and in Predestination of good and evil.”[Bukhari 47, Muslim 4, Tirmidhi 2619, Abu Dawud 4695, Nisai 5005, Ibn Majah 63, Ahmed 184]

Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) reported having heard from Allah’s Messenger (SAW) who said, “Allah decreed the destinies before He created the heavens and earth by fifty thousand years.” [Tirmidhi 2163, Ahmed 6590, Muslim 2653]

Ata' bin Abi Rabah said, "I went to Ibn 'Abbas and found him drawing water from the well of Zamzam. The bottom of his clothes was wet with the water of Zamzam and I said to him, 'They talked about Al-Qadar (some denied it).' He asked, 'Have they done this?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'By Allah! This Ayah was revealed only about them, ("Taste you the touch of Hell!" Verily, We have created all things with Qadar.) They are the worst members of this Ummah. Do not visit those who fall ill among them or pray the Funeral prayer for those among them who die. If I saw one of them, I would pluck out his eyes with these two fingers of mine." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir (7/483), Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim (10/3321) No. 18715, Ithaf al-Khiyarah al-Maharah al-Busayri (6/280) No. 5846, its narrators are Thiqat (trustworthy)]

TENET 4: The perpetrator of a major sin is on the fence, neither here nor there.

- We say this tenet of yours is hypocrisy.

- You claim that he is in the hellfire forever so you have made takfir on him.

- The perpetrator of a major sin is not a kaafir unless the sin is kufr akbar.

- On judgment day he is under the mercy of Allah.

- Allah can forgive him and send him to Paradise or He can send him to the hellfire for a while.

- Any other aqeedah different to this is zandaqa.

- Arbiter means judge.

- They say the aql is the final arbiter to decide what is right from wrong.

- The first mu'tazila in history was Iblees himself.

- The mu'tazila has to be intellectually convinced to obey Allah.

(Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay." (Al-A'raf 7:12)

- Iblees was not intellectually convinced to bow down to Adam.

- Another famous mu'tazila was the son of noah.

- He thought the mountain was tall enough to save him from Allah.

So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Nuh (Noah) called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), "O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers." (Hud 11:42)
The son replied: "I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water." Nuh (Noah) said: "This day there is no saviour[] from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy." And a wave came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. (Hud 11:43)

- The Jews are mu'tazila because they wrote the Talmud from their aql.

- They said the Talmud is better than what Allah revealed to Musa.

- They say the Talmud is better than the Torah.

Imam Malik said: “Whoever seeks the religion through Kalâm becomes a Zindeeq! And whoever seeks money [through alchemy] becomes bankrupt. And whoever seeks the strange narrations becomes a liar!” [Abdallah al-Ansari, Damm al-Kalam wa-Ahlih (4/115) No. 873]

- Imam Malik cursed those people who tried to learn their deen from kalaam.

Ali (RA) observed, "If the religion was based on opinion, the bottom of the sock would take preference in being wiped to the top of the sock." [Related by Abu Dawud (1/90) No. 162 and ad-Daraqutni (1/378) No. 783 with a hassan or sahih chain.]

- It is a fabricated hadith that says Allah created the aql first.

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said that it is Mowdoo' (fabricated). He said: " As for the first Hadeeth (creation of intellect) it is a lie, (ruled to be) fabricated by the scholars of knowledge and hadeeth, it is not in any of the book of Islam that are depended upon, rather it is narrated by the likes of Dawood bin Al Muhbir and his likes from those who authored about the intellect...." [Majmoo'ul Fatawa: 18/336,337]

- They have the nerve to quote Surah Al-Baqarah verse 34 as their hujjah:

And (remember) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam.". And they prostrated except Iblis (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah). (Al-Baqarah 2:34)

- Zamakhshari, a mu'tazila, wrote in his tafsir that iblees was an angel. He took this from the Christians.

And (remember) when We said to the angels; "Prostrate to Adam." So they prostrated except Iblis (Satan). He was one of the jinns; he disobeyed the Command of his Lord. Will you then take him (Iblis) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zalimun (polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc). (Al-Kahf 18:50)

- This is the counter ayah that shows Iblees was of the jinn.

- Surah At-Tahrim verse 6 is another ayah used to prove Iblees was a jinn.

O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded. (At-Tahrim 66:6)

- The ulama use these ayat to refute them.

- Ma’moon was a caliph who set up a tribunal to punish anyone who did not believe the Quran was created.

- He set up an inquisition to see who did not have his aqeeda.

- He would beat a person to force them to accept his aqeeda.

- He beat Ahmad ibn Hanbal to try and force him to accept his aqeedah but he refused.

- Ahmad ibn Hanbal was named the imam of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah because he stood up against Ma'moon.

from Alee bin al-Hasan al-Kuraa'ee who said: Abu Yusuf said: I debated Abu Hanifah for six months, and then our view became united that the one who said the Qur'an is created is a kaafir. [Adh-Dhahabee brings with a good (jayyid) chain of narration, as occurs in Mukhtasar al-Uluww (p. 155)]

Imam Shafi (rahimaullah) said, “Whoever says that the Qur’an is created is a kaafir” [Masail Abu Dawood Pg 262, sanad is Saheeh]

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, “Whoever says that the Qur’an is created is a kaafir; do not say salam to him, neither pray behind him nor sit with him.” [Masail ibn Hani Pg 154 Vol.2 fekrah 1863]

Never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him ) till you follow their religion. Say: "Verily, the Guidance of Allah (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him) were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Qur'an), then you would have against Allah neither any Wali (protector or guardian) nor any helper. (Al-Baqarah 2:120)

- To believe the Quran is created is kufr akbar and takes you out of the fold of Islam.

- The reason why Ahmad ibn hanbal did not make takfir on Ma'moon is because Ma’moon implemented sharia and did jihad.

- They claim there are two types of hujjah: Dhannee ad-dalaala and Qat’ee ad-dalaala.

- Dhannee ad-dalaala means doubtful hujjah.

- Qat'ee ad-dalaala means hujjah which is clear cut with absolutely no doubts.

O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (Al-Hujurat 49:12)

- Their aqeedah is that you are not allowed to base your aqeedah on hadith that is ahad because it is Dhannee ad-dalaala

- They say hadith ahad is dhann.

- They ask how you can follow hadith ahad when Allah cursed dhann in the Quran.

Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW), say, "Actions only go by intentions. Everyone gets what they intend..." [al-Bukhari (1) and Muslim (1907)]

- The above mentioned hadith shows that hadith ahad is accepted as sahih.

Ibn 'Abbas (RA) narrated, 'A Bedouin came to the Prophet (SAW) and said, 'I have sighted the crescent (of Ramadan). He then said to him, "Do you testify that there is none worthy of worship but Allah?" The Bedouin said, 'Yes.' He asked him again, "Do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?'' The man replied, 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah (SAW) thereupon said, "O Bilal! Announce to the people to (start) fasting tomorrow." [Sunan Abu Dawud (2/302) No. 2340, Sunan al-Nasa'i (4/132) No. 2113, Sunan Tirmidhi (3/74) No. 691, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/565) No. 1652, Sunan al-Darime (2/9) No. 1692]

Narrated By Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet sent Muadh to Yemen, he said to him, "You are going to a nation from the people of the Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite them, be the Tauhid of Allah. If they learn that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers to be offered in one day and one night. And if they pray, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor. And if they agree to that, then take from them Zakat but avoid the best property of the people." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 9, Book 93, Hadith #469]

- The Prophet sent one man to Yemen to teach them their deen.

Narrated By Abu Huraira: The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?" They replied, "No, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied in the negative. He said, "You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way... [al-Bukhari (770) and Muslim (352)]

- The mutazila have the audacity to quote Surah Al A’raf verse 143 to say we cannot see Allah.

And when Mûsa (Moses) came at the time and place appointed by Us, and his Lord spoke to him, he said: "O my Lord! Show me (Yourself), that I may look upon You." Allāh said: "You cannot see Me, but look upon the mountain if it stands still in its place then you shall see Me." So when his Lord appeared to the mountain[], He made it collapse to dust, and Mûsa (Moses) fell down unconscious. Then when he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to You, I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers." (Al-A'raf 7:143)
The counter ayat are:

Some faces that Day shall be Nādirah (shining and radiant). (Al-Qiyamah 75:22)
Looking at their Lord (Allāh); (Al-Qiyamah 75:23)

- This is the counter ayah to show that we will see Allah on that day.

There they will have all that they desire, and We have more (for them, i.e. a glance at the All-Mighty, All-Majestic). (Qaf 50:35)

- The mazeed (extra) in the above ayah is to look at Allah's face.

- They have to explain alif lam meem.

- Shaikh looked at mu'tazila tafsir when he was in university.

- None agree on what alif lam meem means.

- They have 30 differing opinions on this; no one is sure who is right or wrong.

- The Prophet didn't explain it but they think they can.

It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad SAW) the Book (this Qur'ān). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkām (commandments, etc.), Al-Farā'id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudud (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers, etc.)]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allāh. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Tafsir At-Tabarī). (Aali Imran 3:7)

- They think they know everything; this is the hallmark of the mu'tazila.

- The Shiites shift the full stop to include that their imams know the meaning of the allegorical verses besides Allah.

- The official creed of the Shiite is the mu'tazilite creed.

- They have adopted this creed.

Ja'far Ibn Abdullah narrated: We were with Malik Ibn Anas when a man came to him and said: “O Abu Abdullah (Allah said) 'Ar-Rahman upon the Throne Istawa' (20:5), how was His Istiwa? Imam Malik inclined his head and was silent until the sweat of fever covered his brow, then he looked up and said: "Istiwa is not unknown, the Kayf (how) is uncomprehendable, believing in it is wajib (obligatory), and asking about it is bid'ah (innovation), and I do not think that you are anything but an innovator." Then he ordered that the man be expelled. [Abu-Naeem Al-Asbahani in 'Hilyatul-Awliya wa Tabaqat Al-Asfiya' (Vol. 6, pg. 325-326)]

The Most Beneficent (Allāh) Istawā (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). (Ta-Ha 20:5)

Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allāh), will not cause the earth to sink with you, then behold it shakes (as in an earthquake)? (Al-Mulk 67:16)

Allāh is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that you can see. Then, He Istawā (rose above) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He has subjected the sun and the moon (to continue going round)! Each running (its course) for a term appointed. He regulates all affairs, explaining the Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail, that you may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord. (Ra'd 13:2)

Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “Those who are merciful will be given mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will have mercy on you.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 40, Hadith #4941]

...Zainab used to boast before the wives of the Prophet and used to say, "You were given in marriage by your families, while I was married (to the Prophet) by Allah from over seven Heavens." And Thabit recited, "The Verse: 'But (O Muhammad) you did hide in your heart that which Allah was about to make manifest, you did fear the people,' (33.37) was revealed in connection with Zainab and Zaid bin Haritha." [Sahih Bukhari (9/125) No. 7421]

- These evidences prove that Allah is above the heavens, above the Arsh.

It is narrated that the companion Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam, (RA) slapped his servant girl who used to tend his sheep, and as a result went to the Prophet (SAWS) and asked what should be done as an atonement for having slapped her. The Prophet replied, "Bring her to me" so Mu'awiyah brought her to the Prophet. The Prophet then asked her, "Where is Allah?" and she replied "Above the Sky" then the Prophet asked her, "Who am I?" and she replied, "You are Allah’s Messenger", so the Prophet said, "Free her, for verily she is a true believer." [Sahih Muslim (1/381) No. 537]

Anas (RA) says, “I went into the presence of Aishah (RA) whilst someone else was seated with her. The person asked, ‘O Mother of the believers, relate to us regarding earthquakes (as to their cause)’ She turned her face away. I (Anas) asked her, ‘Relate to us regarding earthquakes, O Mother of the believers!’ She said, “O Anas, if I were to inform you thereof, you will live a sorrowful life and you will die in this state of grief and you will be raised on the Day of Judgement whilst this fear is in your heart.” I said, “O Mother, relate to me.”
She then said, “When a woman removes her clothes in a house other than her husbands (an indication towards adultery), she tears the veil between her and Allah. When she applies perfume to please a male other than her husband, this will be a source of fire and a blemish for her. When the people then begin to commit adultery, consume alcohol and use musical instruments, Allah becomes enraged above the heavens and orders the Earth to shake them.
If they repent and refrain, then it is good for them, otherwise Allah will cause it to fall upon them.” I asked, “Is this their punishment?” She said, “It is rather a mercy, means of blessings and admonishment for the believers, and a punishment, display of anger and torment for the unbelievers.” [Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/561) No. 8575 and Kitab Al-Fitan (2/619) No. 1729]

...So, when you ask Allah (for something), ask for Al-firdaus which is the best and highest part of Paradise." (i.e. The sub-narrator added, "I think the Prophet also said, 'Above it (i.e. Al-Firdaus) is the Throne of Beneficent (i.e. Allah), and from it originate the rivers of Paradise.") [Sahih Bukhari (4/16) No. 2790]

Abu Haneefah (rh) said, when asked of his opinion of the one who says, ‘I do not know whether Allah is above the heavens or on the earth.’ - “He has disbelieved, because Allah says, “The Most Merciful rose above the Throne,” and His Throne is above His seven heavens.’ He was then asked, ‘what if he said that Allah is above His Throne but he does not know whether the Throne is in the heavens or on the earth?’ He said, ‘He has disbelieved, because He has denied that He is above the heavens, And whosoever denied that He is above the heavens has disbelieved.” (‘Sharh Usul I'tiqaad Ahlus Sunnah’ of al-Laalikaaee (d.414AH), ‘al-Uluww’ of adh- Dhahabee, also ‘Sharh Aqueedah at-Tahaawiyyah’ of ibn Abee al-Izz al-Hanafee)

6, pg. 325-326)]

Imam Shafi'i (rh) said: This is the evidence that Allah the Most High is above the Arsh, without specificity known to us, and He is away from His creation. There is none comparable to His and He is the All-Hearing the All-Seeing. [Tafseer al-Imam ash-Shafi'i (3/1063)]

Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not cause the earth to sink with you, then behold it shakes (as in an earthquake)? (Al-Mulk 67:16)

Yusuf bin Musa al-Qattan, the Shaikh of Abu Bakr al-Khallal, said: It was said to Abu Abdullah (Ahmad bin Hanbal): "Allah is above the seventh heaven, over His Throne, separate and distinct (ba'in) from His creation, and His Power and Knowledge are in every place?" He said: Yes, He is over His Throne, and nothing escapes His Knowledge. [related by Adh-Dhahabi in Mukhtasar al-Uluww (p.189)] This al-Qattan is thiqah (trustworthy) from the Shaikhs of al-Bukhari. He died in 253H, al-Khallal heard from him, and the isnaad is sahih.
