(Notes) Tafsir Surah Anfal (3): Taqwa is the Prerequisite for Furqaan

TAFSIR SURAH ANFAL (3):

TAQWA IS THE PREREQUISITE FOR FURQAAN

- The Arabic word ‘anfal’ means the booty or the spoils of war.

- This surah came down after the victory at Badr to explain the rules and regulations of war and the events that took place at badr b
ecause miracles took place at the battle of Badr.

- This surah came down to explain the scenarios of Badr.

- The battle of Badr is important because it was the first showdown between Islam and kufr.

- The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “O Allah, if you let the Muslims get destroyed, no one will be left to worship you.”

- The victory at Badr ensured the continuity of Islam.

- If it wasn't for the victory of Badr, we wouldn't be Muslims today.

- The battle of Badr was a turning point in history.

- The fall of Khaibar and the conquest of Makkah were also turning points in history.

- The victory of Khaibar shouldn't be underestimated; it gave the Muslims wealth to conquer the whole of the Arabian Peninsula.

- The victory of Mosul is a carbon copy of the victory of Khaibar.

- Both brought wealth to the ummah to spread Islam.

- Another turning point in history was the fall of Persia.

- The fall of Persia was the battle of Qadisiyyah; it was predicted by the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

- Another turning point was the fall of Spain at the hands of Tariq ibn ziyad.

- Another turning point in history was in 1453 - the fall of the Byzantine Empire by Muhammad al Fatih.

- Muhammad al Fatih was only 19 years old.

- Another turning point in history was the fall of the USSR at the hands of the mujahideen of Afghanistan.

- Another turning point in history is the return of the khilafah at the hands of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi.

- This fulfilled another prophecy of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

- The defeat of the crusaders in Jerusalem at the hands of Salahuddin al Ayoubi is another turning point in history.

- The defeat of the Tatars at the battle of Ain Jaloot is another turning point.

- The first time the USSR was defeated was in Afghanistan.

- When the Muslims destroy an empire, that empire can't be brought back.

- That empire is confined to the dustbin of history.

- They can't bring back the Persian Empire.

- They can't bring back the USSR as well.

- Every empire is destroyed when they pick on the Muslims.

AYAH 24

O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he (SAW) calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart (i.e. He prevents an evil person to decide anything). And verily to Him you shall (all) be gathered. (Al-Anfal 8:24)

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah An-Nisa verse 80:

He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as a watcher over them. (An-Nisa 4:80)

- The tafseer of the ayah: It means that you are supposed to obey Allah (SWT) and His Messenger (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the obedience is unconditional.

Narrated By Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever obeys me, obeys Allah, and whoever disobeys me, disobeys Allah, and whoever obeys the ruler I appoint, obeys me, and whoever disobeys him, disobeys me." [Al-Bukhari (7135) and Muslim (1835)]

- One tafseer of ‘calls you to that which will give you life’ is Qur'an and Sunnah. The second tafseer is when the Prophet calls you to the battlefield.

- The tafseer of ‘
and know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart’ is that Allah (SWT) prevents you from carrying out your evil and corrupted desires.

- There is no other tafseer for this.

- The gathering that Allah (SWT) is talking about is the gathering on Judgement Day and this gathering will take place in Jerusalem as mentioned in the following hadith.

Maymunah Bint Sa'd reports that she asked the Prophet (saw), "O Messenger of Allah, give us a pronouncement about Al-Quds (Jerusalem)". The Prophet (saw) replied, "It is the land where they will be raised (Al-Hashr) and gathered (Al-Mahshar)". (Ahmad, Tabarani)

AYAH 25

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal 8:25)

- In the above mentioned ayah, Allah (SWT) is saying if you do not do your duty to enjoin the good and forbid the wrong, when the punishment of Allah comes it will envelope everybody.

- And because of that Allah (SWT) told you in Surah 3:104 to let there arise a group enjoining good and forbidding evil.

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful. (Aali Imran 3:104)

- When the mujahideen take over a place, they always put in place people to enjoin the good and forbid the wrong.

- The punishment of Allah (SWT) is natural disasters.

“Anas (RA) says, “I went into the presence of Aishah (RA) whilst someone else was seated with her. The person asked, ‘O Mother of the believers, relate to us regarding earthquakes (as to their cause)’ She turned her face away. I (Anas) asked her, ‘Relate to us regarding earthquakes, O Mother of the believers!’ She said, “O Anas, if I were to inform you thereof, you will live a sorrowful life and you will die in this state of grief and you will be raised on the Day of Judgement whilst this fear is in your heart.” I said, “O Mother, relate to me.” She then said, “When a woman removes her clothes in a house other than her husbands (an indication towards adultery), she tears the veil between her and Allah. When she applies perfume to please a male other than her husband, this will be a source of fire and a blemish for her. When the people then begin to commit adultery, consume alcohol and use musical instruments, Allah becomes enraged above the heavens and orders the Earth to shake them. If they repent and refrain, then it is good for them, otherwise Allah will cause it to fall upon them.” I asked, “Is this their punishment?” She said, “It is rather a mercy, means of blessings and admonishment for the believers, and a punishment, display of anger and torment for the unbelievers.”
 [Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/561) No. 8575 and Kitab Al-Fitan (2/619) No. 1729]

- When people turn away from religion and dabble in degeneracy and debauchery, earthquakes happen

- Allah (SWT) told us the story of the Jews.

- They left a fish net in the sea to catch fish.

- They like to pull a stunt on Allah.

-
They say that they didn't break the Sabbath; the fish net caught the fish itself.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Ma'idah verse 60

Say (O Muhammad SAW to the people of the Scripture) : "Shall I inform you of something worse than that, regarding the recompense from Allah: those (Jews) who incurred the Curse of Allah and His Wrath, those of whom (some) He transformed into monkeys and swines, those who worshipped Taghut (false deities); such are worse in rank  (on the Day of Resurrection in the Hellfire), and far more astray from the Right Path (in the life of this world)." (Al-Ma'idah 5:60)

- Allah (SWT) turned the ones who broke the Sabbath into swine.

- Allah (SWT) turned the ones who did not enjoin the good and forbid the wrong into apes.

- Certain animals have certain characteristics.

- If someone calls you a swine it means you are shameless.

- If a person calls you a snake, it means you have not loyalty.

- A snake has a hidden agenda.

- If a person calls you a rat, it means you are an informant.

- If a person calls you a dog, it means you sleep around.

- If a person calls you a fox, it means you are cunning.

- If a person calls you a lion, it means you are brave.

- If a person calls you a donkey, it means you are stupid and it is very difficult to teach you.

- Animals have characteristics.

- If a person calls you a worm, it means you are a coward with no honour because a worm has no backbone.

- Even a snake has a backbone. This is why they constrict their victims to death.

- Allah (SWT) sent two angels to destroy a city.

- When they got there, they found a man praying in the masjid.

- The angels came back and asked how they can destroy the city with this man there.

- Allah (SWT) sent them back to destroy the city.

- The man didn't enjoin the good and forbid the wrong.

On the authority of Abu Umar who said: Allah sent two angels to destroy a township with a natural disaster, but when they got there they found a man praying in the mosque. They went back to Allah and said: 'O Allah we found a man praying in the mosque.' Allah said to the two angels: 'Go back and destroy the township with that man as well because not once did he ever frown when he saw the people indulging in haram.' [Ibnul Qayyim, al-Jawaab al-Kaafi (Vol. 1, pg. 46)]

- Some hadiths say to destroy the city and to begin with him first.

- This hadith was quoted to convince you that it is a religious duty to enjoin the good and forbid the wrong.

On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree (RA) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Sahih Muslim (1/69) No. 49, Musnad Ahmad (3/10) No. 11088, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/145) No. 4013, Sunan Tirmidhi (4/469) No. 2172, Sunan Abu Dawud (1/296) No. 1140, Sunan al-Nasa'i (8/112) No. 5009]

- If you don't hate the munkar in your heart, you have no imaan.

- So think about the Muslims who grow up in the west and don't hate homosexuality because they believe it is in the genes.

AYAH 26

And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful. (Al-Anfal 8:26)

'Few' refers to about 70 men in Makkah.

- The tafseer of the ayah - Allah (SWT) is talking about the two daars (abodes): Makkah and Medina.

- When you were in Makkah you feared that the pagans will kidnap you and kill you.

- The fear was so strong that when they migrated from Makkah to Medina, they did it at night.

- The sahabas had a fear and it was a legitimate fear because kidnapping was rife in the Arabian Peninsula.

- The pagan Arabs used to kidnap people and sell them into slavery.

- Surah 29:67 proves to you that kidnapping was rife in the Arabian Peninsula

Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in Batil (falsehood - polytheism, idols and all deities other than Allah), and deny (become ingrate for) the Graces of Allah? (Al-'Ankabut 29:67)

- The question in the above ayah is for the kuffar.

- It is for people like Abu Lahab.

- The reason why Makkah is a city of security and safety is because of the dua of Abraham.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Baqarah verse 126

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, "My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day." He (Allah) answered: "As for him who disbelieves, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the torment of the Fire, and worst indeed is that destination!" (Al-Baqarah 2:126)

- Allah (SWT) answered this dua of Abraham

And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful. (Al-Anfal 8:26)

- ‘But He provided a safe place for you’ - this is talking about Medina (daarul Islam) where the fear of abduction was no longer in your hearts.

- ‘
Strengthened you with His Help’ - it means the ansars of Medina

- They share their property with you 50-50.

- The orientalists who study Islam say there's never been such brotherhood like the brotherhood between the companions of Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

- Where else in human history will you find brotherhood like this?

- The brotherhood that existed between the muhajiroon (emigrants) and the ansar (helpers) has never been seen in history before.

AYAH 27

O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger, nor betray knowingly your Amanat (things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you). (Al-Anfal 8:27)

- When you study tafsir, there is something called asbab an-nuzul (why Allah revealed an ayah).

- Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a tipped of Quraish about the coming of the Prophet to conquer Makkah.

- The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was informed by supernatural means about the letter Hatib sent.

- A woman was delivering the letter.

- Ali asked her for the letter. He said if she doesn't give it, he's going to strip her naked.

- Hatib acted out of character so the Prophet
(Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) asked him about it.

- Umar (RA) said to the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to give him permission to cut off the head of this munafiq.

- The Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that Hatib participated in the battle of Badr.

Narrated 'Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi: I heard 'Ali saying, "Allah's Apostle sent me, Az-Zubair and Al-Miqdad somewhere saying, 'Proceed till you reach Rawdat Khakh. There you will find a lady with a letter. Take the letter from her.' " So, we set out and our horses ran at full pace till we got at Ar-Rawda where we found the lady and said (to her). "Take out the letter." She replied, "I have no letter with me." We said, "Either you take out the letter or else we will take off your clothes." So, she took it out of her braid. We brought the letter to Allah's Apostle and it contained a statement from Hatib bin Abi Balta a to some of the Meccan pagans informing them of some of the intentions of Allah's Apostle. Then Allah's Apostle said, "O Hatib! What is this?" Hatib replied, "O Allah's Apostle! Don't hasten to give your judgment about me. I was a man closely connected with the Quraish, but I did not belong to this tribe, while the other emigrants with you, had their relatives in Mecca who would protect their dependents and property. So, I wanted to recompense for my lacking blood relation to them by doing them a favor so that they might protect my dependents. I did this neither because of disbelief not apostasy nor out of preferring Kufr (disbelief) to Islam." Allah's Apostle, said, "Hatib has told you the truth." Umar said, O Allah's Apostle! Allow me to chop off the head of this hypocrite." Allah's Apostle said, "Hatib participated in the battle of Badr, and who knows, perhaps Allah has already looked at the Badr warriors and said, 'Do whatever you like, for I have forgiven you." [Sahih Bukhari: Vol: 4 Book 52 Hadith 251]

- Hatib's reason was that he was trying to protect his family.

- The Saudi Salafis use this hadith to say you can spy for the MI5, the CIA or the FBI.

- A Madkhali is a zindeeq; he is very evil.

- They put a spin on the hadith.

Narrated 'Ali: Allah's Apostle sent me, Az-Zubair and Al-Miqdad saying, "Proceed till you reach Rawdat Khakh where there is a lady carrying a letter, and take that (letter) from her." So we proceeded on our way with our horses galloping till we reached the Rawda, and there we found the lady and said to her, "Take out the letter." She said, "I have no letter." We said, "Take out the letter, or else we will take off your clothes." So she took it out of her braid, and we brought the letter to Allah's Apostle . The letter was addressed from Hatib, bin Abi Balta'a to some pagans of Mecca, telling them about what Allah's Apostle intended to do. Allah's Apostle said, "O Hatib! What is this?" Hatib replied, "O Allah's Apostle! Do not make a hasty decision about me. I was a person not belonging to Quraish but I was an ally to them from outside and had no blood relation with them, and all the Emigrants who were with you, have got their kinsmen (in Mecca) who can protect their families and properties. So I liked to do them a favor so that they might protect my relatives as I have no blood relation with them. I did not do this to renegade from my religion (i.e. Islam) nor did I do it to choose Heathenism after Islam." Allah's Apostle said to his companions." As regards him, he (i.e. Hatib) has told you the truth." 'Umar said, "O Allah's Apostle! Allow me to chop off the head of this hypocrite!" The Prophet said, "He (i.e. Hatib) has witnessed the Badr battle (i.e. fought in it) and what could tell you, perhaps Allah looked at those who witnessed Badr and said, "O the people of Badr (i.e. Badr Muslim warriors), do what you like, for I have forgiven you. "Then Allah revealed the Sura:-- "O you who believe! Take not my enemies And your enemies as friends offering them (Your) love even though they have disbelieved in that Truth (i.e. Allah, Prophet Muhammad and this Quran) which has come to you ....(to the end of Verse)....(And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray (away) from the Straight Path." (60.1) [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #572]

- The most noble tribe is Quraish.

- Hatib ibn Abi Balta’a was trying to ingratiate himself with Quraish.

- It was because of the behaviour of Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a that Allah (SWT) revealed ayah 27 of Surah Al-Anfal.

O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger, nor betray knowingly your Amanat (things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you). (Al-Anfal 8:27)

- Allah (SWT) mentioned amanah in the ayah.

- Amanah is when people entrust you with something.

- Example: a girl had a bad childhood and she comes to you for therapy. If you tell everyone about it, you betray her amanah.

- If a person entrusts you with their family and you make indecent proposals, you have betrayed the amanah.

- If someone gives you money for safekeeping, the money they gave you is called amanah.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Mu'minun verse 8

Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.) and to their covenants; (Al-Mu'minun 23:8)

- If you tell people, like those mentioned in the above ayah, a secret they take it to their grave.

- Some people use your secrets to blackmail you, especially some in the West.

- Hudhaifa ibn Yamaan would never let out a secret the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told him.

- This is why the Rasool told him the names of all the hypocrites of Madina.

- The people who will inherit Firdaws, one of their characteristics is that they don't betray their amanah.

- You need to ask yourself the question whether you're a snake.

- You need to ask yourself whether you protect the amanah or if you are a snake who betrays it.

Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) has never preached us without saying: "There is no faith for the one who has no amanah (trust) and no religion for the one who does not keep his promises." [Musnad Ahmad (3/135) No. 12406, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi (9/387) No. 18851]

- Some people go to Islamic universities and they become shaikhs. But they use their knowledge to cement the thrones of the apostate rulers and badmouth the mujahideen.

- So you need to ask the question, are you a shaikh or a snake?

AYAH 28

And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward. (Al-Anfal 8:28)

- Allah (SWT) told you on many occasions that your wealth and children are a fitna for you.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Imran verse 14

Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world's life; but Allah has the excellent return (Paradise with flowing rivers, etc.) with Him. (Aali Imran 3:14)

- To be able to have children is honour for you; it means you are not a waste of space.

- Sons are loyal to their fathers. They look after their fathers' businesses.

- Every country in the world imposes visas.

- In China, you need a visa to go from one city to another.

- Why is it that they impose visa restrictions to go from some cities to others in China?

- It is because some cities are richer than others and they want to avoid an influx

- They want to avoid having ghettos.

The Holy Prophet said: Your children at times make you become tight-fisted and cowards”. (Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal vol.4 pg.172)

- This hadith proves that your children are a fitna for you.

- Your wealth and children can cause you to hold back in carrying out your religious duties.

- This is why they are a fitna for you.

- Your wealth can make you abandon jihad.

- Your children can cause you to avoid giving zakah and sadaqah.

- Your wealth causes you to become used to luxury so you don't want to go to jihad.

- Your wealth can make you become addicted to the comforts of the dunya.

AYAH 29

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty. (Al-Anfal 8:29)

- Allah (SWT) is saying one of the prerequisites to have furqaan is taqwa.

- Furqaan is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

- You want to find a husband for your daughter; you see a shaitan and you think he is an angel.

- The man is a Barelvi or a Madkhali.

- How are they good for you sisters?

- How is a raafida good for your sister?

- Raafida comes from the Arabic word ‘rafada’; it means they reject the sahabas.

- The man believes the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is alive in the grave and that you can pray to Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

- Where is your furqaan?

Narrated Muawiya: I heard the Prophet (SAW) saying, "If Allah wants to do good to a person, He makes him comprehend the religion. I am just a distributor, but the grant is from Allah. (And remember) that this nation (true Muslims) will keep on following Allah's teachings strictly and they will not be harmed by any one going on a different path till Allah's order (Day of Judgment) is established." [Al-Bukhari (71) and Muslim (1037)]

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Baqarah verse 282

So be afraid of Allah; and Allah teaches you. And Allah is the All-Knower of each and everything. (Al-Baqarah 2:282)

- The prerequisite for furqaan is taqwa.

- When you have no furqaan, you're going to make bad decisions.

- Many Muslim women have their lives destroyed because their fathers married them to evil men because they had no furqaan.

- The father himself is a Barelvi so he got his daughter married to another Barelvi.

- The father is a barelvi/shia/madkhali but the daughter is not.

- Only with taqwa, you have furqaan.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: "A believer is not bitten from the same hole twice.” [Related by al-Bukhari (6133) and Muslim (2998)]

- How can you become shrewd, sharp and careful?

- You need the furqaan.

- How can you meet a person online and give them your bank details?

- Can you imagine the level of imbecility?

Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, ‘The time of the Dajjal will be years of confusion. People will believe a liar, and disbelieve one who tells the truth. People will distrust one who is trustworthy, and trust one who is treacherous; and the Ruwaybidah will have a say.’ Someone asked, ‘Who are the Ruwaybidah?’ He said, ‘Those who rebel against Allah and will have a say in general affairs.’ [Musnad Ahmad (3/220) No. 13322]

- The Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that one of the signs of the last days is that people will believe a liar.

- Firaasa is similar to furqaan.

- Firaasa is intuition.

Abu Sa’eed Khudri (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, ‘Guard yourself against a Believer’s insight, for, he sees with the light of Allah.” He then recited: Surely in that are signs for the sagacious. (15:75) [Sunan Tirmidhi (Vol. 5, pg. 298) No. 3127]

- It is the ability to look into the face of a man and tell he's committing zina or that he's a gambler.

- It is the ability to look into the face of a man and tell he's a spy.

Anas ibn Malik (RA) said: I entered the company of Uthman ibn Affaan (RA) while I was thinking about the beauty of a woman I saw in the street. Uthman (RA) then said: One of you enter my presence and the remnants of zinaa can be seen in his eyes. I then said: Did revelation come down after the departure of the Rasool (SAW)? Uthman said: But this is the deep insight, foresight and intuition of the believer. [Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Madaarij as-Saalikeen (Vol. 2, pg. 455)]

- Sometimes a man is having an affair and his wife catches him because she saw it in a dream.

- The wife even described the girl.

- Guard yourselves against the dreams of the believers too.

- When you are a believer, Allah (SWT) gives you true dreams.

- Many people are caught red handed because Allah (SWT) showed a believer a true dream.

- Three brothers went for jihad and they left their sister with Barsisaa.

- Barsisaa impregnated her.

- He told her brothers she became ill and died.

- The brothers saw the grave of their sister in their dream.

- When they dug up the grave they saw their sister and her son.

- Barsisaa was living in cave far away from the community so he thought his crime would be hidden.

- Who told you your crime is hidden?

- What about the true dreams of a believer?

- A true dream is a forty sixth part of prophet hood.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of Prophet-hood.” [Al-Bukhari (6989) and Muslim (2263)]

- The only thing left of prophethood is a true dream.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Nothing is left of the prophetism except Al-Mubashshirat." They asked, "What are Al-Mubashshirat?" He replied, "The true good dreams (that conveys glad tidings)." [Sahih Al Bakhari: Vol: 9 Book 87 Hadith 119]
