(Notes) Tafsir Surah Anfal (1): The Three Daars (Abodes)

The Three Daars (Abodes)

16 June 2014 - 18 Shaban 1435 Hijri
Notes taken by Khadimuddin & Wordup1
Edited by Abu Hafiza & AT6

- It is translated into English as the booty, as the spoils of war

- The word Anfal has another Arabic name and it’s called ghaneema

They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) about the spoils of war. Say: "The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), if you are believers. (Al-Anfal 8:1)

- Anfal: wealth that was captured from the Kuffar after a war took place between the Muslims and infidels

- There are many evidences to prove that anfal is an integral part of Islam

- This is mentioned in the topic of Jihad (taught in Islamic universities).

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an surah al Anfal verse 41

And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allah, and to the Messenger, and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad SAW)], (and also) the orphans, Al-Masking (the poor) and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad SAW) on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong), the Day when the two forces met (the battle of Badr) - And Allah is Able to do all things. (Al-Anfal 8:41)

- In Surah 8:41, Allah (SWT) talks about Anfal

- The verse tells us that when you go on a raid, one-fifth of the wealth you capture belongs to Allah and His Prophet (SAWS).

- Since there is no prophet, you give it to the ameer to distribute as he pleases.

- Some scholars refute the wrong opinion among some scholars that you can go to jihad to enrich yourself.

- Badr started because the Prophet (saw) wanted to capture the caravan of Quraish.

- You can go to battle for the purpose of enriching yourself if your purpose is to spread Islam.

- However it is not allowed to ingratiate yourself with the wealth of the kuffar on an individual level.

- You can use the funds for media, ideological and economic warfare against the kuffar.

- Another verse which speaks about the anfal is Surah 33:27.

And He caused you to inherit their lands, and their houses, and their riches, and a land which you had not trodden (before). And Allah is Able to do all things. (Al-Ahzab 33:27)

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Fath verse 20

Allah has promised you abundant spoils that you will capture, and He has hastened for you this, and He has restrained the hands of men from you, that it may be a sign for the believers, and that He may guide you to a Straight Path. (Al-Fath 48:20)

- This is another verse which talks about anfal.

- ISIS earned 480 million dollars in one day and a huge amount of oil barrels.

- The kuffar called them the richest terror group.

- They captured 25 billion barrels of oil.

- The term ‘terror group’ is not appropriate, because they have land, they are a khilafah.

- In the time of Umar (RA), he saw Muslims planting and he got upset

- He said, leave the planting to the kuffar (Jews and Christians) and do jihad.

- No matter how much corn and wheat you plant, you cannot earn 480 million US dollars a day

- The fall of Mosul is exactly the same as the fall of Khaibar.

- When Khaibar fell, the wealth of khaibar was used to further the cause of Islam by the Prophet (SAWS)

- The following hadiths show the importance of the conquest of Khaibar.

Narrated By 'Aisha: When Khaibar was conquered, we said, "Now we will eat our fill of dates!" [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #547]

Narrated By Ibn Umar: We did not eat our fill except after we had conquered Khaibar. [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #548]

- When the Prophet (SAWS) signed the treaty of Hudaibiyyah, some of the sahabah (RA) were upset.

- But Allah (SWT) called it a great victory in Surah Al-Fath verse 1.

Verily, We have given you (O Muhammad SAW) a manifest victory. (Al-Fath 48:1)

- With the money from Khaibar, the Prophet conquered the other surrounding areas of Medina including Makkah.

Anfal is the best wealth for a Muslim to earn.

- It has numerous barakah

Ibn Umar narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "I was sent by the sword from now until Judgment Day, until Allah Alone is worshipped with no partners, and my livelihood is in the shadow of my spear, and humiliation and submission are on those who disobey me and whoever imitates a people is one of them" [Musnad Ahmad (2/50) No. 5115, Shu'ab al-Eman al-Bayhaqi (2/417) No. 1154, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/212) No. 19401]

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: I have been given superiority over the other prophets in six respects: I have been given words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning; I have been helped by terror (in the hearts of enemies): spoils have been made lawful to me: the earth has been made for me clean and a place of worship; I have been sent to all mankind and the line of prophets is closed with me. [Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith #1062]

- When the Prophet (SAWS) said, “spoils have been made lawful to me,” he meant him and his ummah.

The Prophet (SAWS) also said:

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the salah and pay the zakat. And if they do that then they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah.” [al-Bukhari (25) and Muslim (22)]

- There are three daars (abodes) in the world

1) DAARUL KUFR - land of the kuffar but they are not antagonistic towards Islam and Muslims.

- They are not locking up innocent Muslims in their home, and neither are they killing Muslims abroad, e.g. Jamaica, Argentina, Brazil & Venezuela.

- You are not allowed to carry out darul harb activities in this daar like stealing, looting and killing.

2) DAARUL HARB - land in which they lock up innocent Muslims at home and kill innocent Muslims abroad

- Examples of such countries are USA, UK, Saudi, France and NATO countries.

- In darul harb, when you borrow money from the bank, you don't have to pay back the money because they are enemies of Allah, His Rasul, his ummah and Islam.

- These are evil countries; they ban hijab, mosques, minarets, i.e. symbols of Islam.

- Any country that is killing Muslims all over the world is daarul harb.

- They have Muslim blood on their hands and the blood of a Muslim is more sacred than the kaabah.

- They rape Muslim women, they plunder our wealth and they even kill the children of the sheikhs like Anwar Al Awlaki’s son.

- Daarul harb is a satanic land.

- The leaders of daarul harb are freemasons who have given their bay’ah and wala to Ibless

- These are very evil men.

Sayyidina Hudhaifa ibn Yaman reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “By Him Who has my soul in His hand, the Last Hour will not come before you kill your imam, kill each other with your swords and the worst of you inherit your world (becoming your leaders).” [Tirmidhi 2177, Ibn Majah 4043]

- This is Muslim land in which shariah is implemented.

- Examples of such places are Northern Iraq and northern Nigeria

- Ghanimah is wealth acquired from kuffar after a battle, e.g. Badr and Hunain.

- Fai is wealth acquired from kuffar by means of stealing or deception.

- Stealing is halal in Islam if it is used to weaken the enemies of Allah economically.

- Imam Ghazali wrote an entire chapter about stealing in his book

- It is allowed to steal from a Madkhali, a Shia, a barevli and a qadiyanni too.

- These are all enemies of Islam

- When you wage war against Allah, you have forfeited your human rights.

- The following hadith is the evidence:

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the salah and pay the zakat. And if they do that then they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah.” [al-Bukhari (25) and Muslim (22)]

- Another evidence is the hadith of Abu Baseer.

- Part of the treaty of hudaibiyah was that anyone who left daarul harb (Makkah) for daarul Islam (Madina), the kuffar could take back but if a person from daarul Islam went to daarul harb, the kuffar were allowed to keep them.

- This clause caused Umar bin Khattab (RA) to fume.

Abu Basir came and said, "O Allah's Apostle, by Allah, Allah has made you fulfil your obligations by your returning me to them (i.e. the Infidels), but Allah has saved me from them." The Prophet said, "Woe to his mother! what excellent war kindler he would be, should he only have supporters." When Abu Basir heard that he understood that the Prophet would return him to them again, so he set off till he reached the seashore. Abu Jandal bin Suhail got himself released from them (i.e. infidels) and joined Abu Basir. So, whenever a man from Quraish embraced Islam he would follow Abu Basir till they formed a strong group. By Allah, whenever they heard about a caravan of Quraish heading towards Sham, they stopped it and attacked and killed them (i.e. infidels) and took their properties. The people of Quraish sent a message to the Prophet requesting him for the Sake of Allah and Kith and kin to send for (i.e. Abu Basir and his companions) promising that whoever (amongst them) came to the Prophet would be secure. So the Prophet sent for them (i.e. Abu Basir's companions) and Allah I revealed the following Divine Verses:
"And it is He Who Has withheld their hands from you and your hands From them in the midst of Mecca, After He made you the victorious over them... the unbelievers had pride and haughtiness, in their hearts... the pride and haughtiness of the time of ignorance." (48.24-26) And their pride and haughtiness was that they did not confess (write in the treaty) that he (i.e. Muhammad) was the Prophet of Allah and refused to write: "In the Name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the Most Merciful," and prevented the Mushriks from visiting the Ka'ba.
Narrated Az-Zuhri: Urwa said, "'Aisha told me that Allah's Apostle used to examine the women emigrants. We have been told also that when Allah revealed the order that the Muslims should return to the pagans what they had spent on their wives who emigrated (after embracing Islam) and that the Mushriks should not. keep unbelieving women as their wives, 'Umar divorced two of his wives, Qariba, the daughter of Abu Urhaiya and the daughter of Jarwal Al-Khuza'i. Later on Mu'awlya married Qariba and Abu Jahm married the other."
When the pagans refused to pay what the Muslims had spent on their wives, Allah revealed: "And if any of your wives have gone from you to the unbelievers and you have an accession (By the coming over of a woman from the other side) (Then pay to those whose wives have gone) The equivalent of what they had spent (On their Mahr)." (60.11)
So, Allah ordered that the Muslim whose wife, has gone, should be given, as a compensation of the Mahr he had given to his wife, from the Mahr of the wives of the pagans who had emigrated deserting their husbands. We do not know any of the women emigrants who deserted Islam after embracing it. We have also been told that Abu Basir bin Asid Ath-Thaqafi came to the Prophet as a Muslim emigrant during the truce. Al-Akhnas bin Shariq wrote to the Prophet requesting him to return Abu Basir.
[Sahih Bukhari, Vol 3, Book 50, Hadith #891]

- Abu Baseer (RA) took his shahadah and went to Madina but the kuffar said to send him back.

- The Prophet (SAWS) sent him back but he started living between Makkah and Medina and started looting the caravans of the kuffar and the Prophet (SAWS) did not reprimand him.

- Because of the hypocrisy amongst the Muslims living in the west (daarul harb), they think it is too radical.

- The Prophet (SAWS) approved the activities of daarul harb

- Many scholars gloss over this when they teach the seerah

- When you ask your local sheikhs, they will either claim ignorance or wouldn't know

- If you ask 100 sheikhs, one would answer this correctly.

- This hadith is also found in the sealed nectar, ibn hisham, and al bidaya wan nihaya.

- This only applies to kuffar in daar ul harb

- Hence stealing is allowed in Islam in daarul harb to weaken the enemies of Islam, economically.

- In daarul harb, they try you for crimes of thought; they don't need any evidence,

- It is haram to live in daarul harb

- They locked up Babar Ahmed without any evidence

- They are satanic men who don't have an atoms weight of good

- We are not allowed to apologise to the kuffar

- The Rasul (SAWS) used to raid the caravans coming from Syria.

- The reasons given by the prophet (SAWS) is that when the Muslims were migrating to medina, the kuffar usurped the wealth of the Muslims.

- So it is only fair to compensate for this loss by robbing the wealth of the kuffar.

- When the Prophet (SAWS) raided the caravans, it is called ANFAAL

- A part of the ANFAAL is women (right hand possessed)

- Women of kuffar who are killed become concubines.

Evidence of taking kuffar's women as concubines:

And they who guard their private parts Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors; (Al-Mu'minun 23:5-7)

- The scholars use this to prove that you can go to bed with your right hand possessed without nikah

- The Rasul (saw) also didn't marry Maria the Coptic

- The modernists say, you have to marry them.

- How do you checkmate them??

- Many of the women would be Hindus and Buddhists but you cannot do nikah with the mushriks.

Another evidence is the hadith:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: that while he was sitting with Allah's Apostle he said, "O Allah's Apostle! We get female captives as our share of booty, and we are interested in their prices, what is your opinion about coitus interrupt us?" The Prophet said, "Do you really do that? It is better for you not to do it. No soul that which Allah has destined to exist, but will surely come into existence. [Sahih Al Bukhari: Vol: 3 Book 34 Hadith 432]

- In the battlefield, it is up to the amir to distribute booty and right hand possessed

- Some scholars allow men to have sex with women in the west

- Because according to them they become right hand possessed.

- This is wrong because you have to subdue the land before you can do that.

- This is a wrong fatwa because the men will bring STDs to the Muslim women.

- The sheikh who passed the fatwa was very reckless.

- Ibn al Qayyim said you are not allowed to pass a fatwa until you know the fiqh ul waqi’ of the society.

- These sheikhs do qiyaas based on doing credit card fraud (stealing the wealth of the kuffar).

- Ahmed ibn hanbal said most mistakes are made with wrong qiyaas.

In "Fatāwā al-Subkī" (Shafi'i) the author narrates the opinion of two of the most prominent Imam’s of the Shafi'i School: Imam al-Ghazali and Imam al-Rafi'i. He says: "Al-Ghazali said that if a Muslim steals money from the disbelievers then the entire amount becomes his property and the one-fifth is not taken from it.

- If a kafir's wealth is stolen in daarul Islam, a Muslim’s hand is still cut.

- Cutting the hand is not applicable in daarul harb

- Because it is wrong to cut the hands in daar ul harb, or flog someone or kill a gay because there is no shariah established there.

- These are carried out in the Islamic State.

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Qur'an) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone); (Al-Anfal 8:2)

Allah (SWT) is telling us about the characteristics of the believer

1) They become fearful when they hear the Qur'an

2) The reading of the Qur’an increases their eman.

3) They have tawwakul (trust) in Allah

Anas ibn Malik reported that someone asked, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I tether it and trust in Allah or untie it and place trust in Allah”? He said, “Tie it and trust in Allah." [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/668) No. 2517, Sahih Ibn Hibban (2/510) No. 731, Shu'ab al-Iman al-Bayhaqi (2/428) No. 1161]

- Whenever you have tawakul in Allah, always tie your camel

- Ayah 2 of Surah Al-Anfal is similar to the following ayah:

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Qur'an), some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice. (At-Tawbah 9:124)

- Both ayahs speak about the eman of the believers increasing when they hear the Qur’an

- It is haraam to have a conversation when the Quran is being recited

- The proof for this is Surah 7:204.

So, when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Surat Al-Fatiha), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.9, Pages 162-4] (Al-A'raf 7:204)

- Allah (SWT) put a curse on those that don't contemplate and reflect on the Qur’an.

Do they not then think deeply in the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? (Muhammad 47:24)

- The Qur’an is the greatest miracle and if you can’t reflect on it, this means your heart is sealed.

Who perform As-Salat (Iqamatas Salat) and spend out of that We have provided them. (Al-Anfal 8:3)

- Allah gives us 2 more characteristics of the believers

4) They establish salah

5) They give zakah

It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and Forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise). (Al-Anfal 8:4)

- Here Allah (SWT) is talking about the noble provision of Jannatul Firdaws.

Successful indeed are the believers.
Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness.
And those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allah has forbidden).
And those who pay the Zakat.
And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts)
 Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame;
 But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors;
 Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.)[] and to their covenants;
And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) Salawat (prayers) (at their fixed stated hours).
 These are indeed the inheritors.
Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever. (Al-Mu'minun 23:1-11)

- These are the characteristics of those who will be in Firdaws.

- So the Quran supports the Quran, and doesn't checkmate the Quran.

As your Lord caused you (O Muhammad SAW) to go out from your home with the truth, and verily, a party among the believers disliked it; (Al-Anfal 8:5)

Disputing with you concerning the truth after it was made manifest, as if they were being driven to death, while they were looking (at it). (Al-Anfal 8:6)

- Why did some of the sahabas not want to go to Badr?

1) They were ill equipped to face the quraish

2) They were outnumbered 3 to 1

3) They were not properly fed

The hadith of Aisha (RAA) talks about the Muslims not being properly fed.

Narrated By 'Aisha: When Khaibar was conquered, we said, "Now we will eat our fill of dates!" [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #547]

4) If the fight Quriash, there will be bloodshed amongst their families; this was a reality.

- They wanted an easier option, the caravan of Abu sufyan but Allah planned something else.

And (remember) when Allah promised you (Muslims) one of the two parties (of the enemy i.e. either the army or the caravan) that it should be yours, you wished that the one not armed (the caravan) should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the truth by His Words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e. in the battle of Badr). (Al-Anfal 8:7)

- The caravan was a small shrimp; the victory at Badr was a big fish.

- Miqdad ibn amr was the spokesman for the sahabah.

Miqdad ibn Amr said to the Holy Prophet: “ O Messenger of Allah commands us with what Allah has ordained because you have our full support wholeheartedly. By Allah we will never say to you what Bani Israel said to Musa (i.e. you and your lord go and fight while we site and relax). But instead we say to you; you and your Lord go and fight and we shall be with you fighting for the cause of Allah. For by the one who has sent you with the truth if you march towards the highest mountains we shall march with you until we all reach it”.  (Seerah an-Nabawiyya by Ibn Hisham Vol 1. Pg.614 & Musnad Ahmad Vol.1 pg.390)

- This shows the superiority of ummah of Muhammad (SAWS) over the ummah of Musa (AS)

- The Prophet (SAWS) smiled when he heard this speech.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Aali Imran verse 110

You [true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah (legal ways, etc.)] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islāmic Monotheism and all that Islām has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islām has forbidden), and you believe in Allāh. And had the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) believed, it would have been better for them; among them are some who have faith, but most of them are Al-Fāsiqûn (disobedient to Allāh - and rebellious against Allāh's Command). (Aali Imran 3:110)

- The big fish is killing of the leaders of Quraish (disbelief) and to dispatch them to the hellfire, e.g. Utbah, Shaibah, Abu Jahal and Umayah ibn khalaf, AND to establish the truth

- The entire leaderships of the kuffar was wiped out

- Because Allah (SWT) tells us to fight the think tanks of the kuffar

- When you take out the leaders, the masses are asses

Allah (SWT) said in the Quran, Surah At Taubah verse 12

But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and attack your religion with disapproval and criticism then fight (you) the leaders of disbelief (chiefs of Quraish - pagans of Makkah) - for surely their oaths are nothing to them - so that they may stop (evil actions). (At-Tawbah 9:12)

That He might cause the truth to triumph and bring falsehood to nothing, even though the Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.) hate it. (Al-Anfal 8:8)

- When people lose the battle, the creed becomes baatil in the eyes of the people, e.g. the Nazis lost in ww2 and Nazism was finished; communism was finished in Afghanistan.

- When you defeat the kuffar, their creed becomes irrelevant amongst the masses.

- USSR broke into many smaller countries and communism ended

- Look at the momentum ISIS built itself and loads are joining them because people want to be part of the success.

- The victory of badr will swell the ranks of Muslims.

(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying) : "I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession." (Al-Anfal 8:9)

- The Prophet (SAWS) sought help before badr.

- The Prophet (SAWS) cried so much that his shirt became wet.

- Allah (SWT) sent 1000 angels to help the Muslims, answering the Prophet's dua.

Narrated By Ibn Abbas: On the day of the battle of Badr, the Prophet said, "O Allah! I appeal to You (to fulfil) Your Covenant and Promise. O Allah! If Your Will is that none should worship You (then give victory to the pagans)." Then Abu Bakr took hold of him by the hand and said, "This is sufficient for you." The Prophet came out saying, "Their multitude will be put to flight and they will show their backs." (54.45) [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #289]

- The shaitan was the one who encouraged the kuffar in Badr but when he saw the angels, he fled.

Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an, Surah Al Anfal verse 48

And (remember) when Shaitan (Satan) made their (evil) deeds seem fair to them and said, "No one of mankind can overcome you this Day (of the battle of Badr) and verily, I am your neighbour (for each and every help)." But when the two forces came in sight of each other, he ran away and said "Verily, I have nothing to do with you. Verily! I see what you see not. Verily! I fear Allah for Allah is Severe in punishment." (Al-Anfal 8:48)

- The shaitan said to Quriash, “you are on your own.”

- USA stands for yoU Stand Alone.

- The amount of homeless is proof of how the people there stand alone.

- The shaitaan said USA - you stand alone.
