Tafsir Surah Al 'Araf - Part 3 - The 13 Types Of Shirk

Say (O Muhammad SAW) : "Who has forbidden the adoration with clothes given by Allah, which He has produced for his slaves, and At-Taiyibat [all kinds of Halal (lawful) things] of food?" Say: "They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them)." Thus We explain the Ayat (Islamic laws) in detail for people who have knowledge. (Al-A'raf 7:32)

What do you understand from this ayah?
According to Shariah law, everything is halal until proven haram
The Shariah is the law of rahma (mercy)
Because of this, everything is halal until proven haram
A thing can only be haram if it was made haram by Quran or Hadith
So, the hadith has the power to make things haram because of the verses:

Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. (An-Najm 53:3)
It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (An-Najm 53:4)

This is the evidence used by the scholar to say that the hadith is also revelation
And that the hadith has the power to make things haram

Abu Musa Ash’ari reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Wearing silk and gold is forbidden to the men of my Ummah. But (they are) allowed to their women.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/217) No. 1720, Sunan An-Nasa'i (8/161) 5148]

The wearing of gold and silk by men was made haram by hadith

Abu Musa Ash’ari reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Wearing silk and gold is forbidden to the men of my Ummah. But (they are) allowed to their women.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/217) No. 1720, Sunan An-Nasa'i (8/161) 5148]

Narrated Um Habiba: I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." He said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for even now I am not your only wife; and the most beloved person to share the good with me is my sister." The Prophet said, "But that is not lawful for me (i.e., to be married to two sisters at a time.)" I said, "O Allah's Apostle! By Allah, we have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah ! Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she would not be lawful for me to marry, for she is my foster niece, for Thuwaiba has suckled me and Abu Salama; so you should neither present your daughters, nor your sisters to me." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number #43]

Muslim men also don't marry the aunt and niece at the same time
Because the hadith made this haram
However, if one dies we can marry the other

Some people are takfir happy
They make takfir on muslims for drinking alcohol or having a girlfriend
Some cops are trigger happy, they like to kill kill kill
No sin can put you outside the fold of Islam unless it is kufr akbar (major kufr)
In order to refute this mentality, Allah says:

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Who has forbidden the adoration with clothes given by Allāh, which He has produced for his slaves, and At-Taiyibāt [all kinds of Halāl (lawful) things] of food?" Say: "They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them)." Thus We explain the Ayāt (Islāmic laws) in detail for people who have knowledge. (Al-A'raf 7:32)

The only time the clothing is haram is if it is tight fitting, or has pictures on it
Or the clothing is exclusive to a religious group
Ex.: If the pants (trousers) or dress is worn by Hindus only, it is haram to wear it
As for the necktie, you can wear it if it is a part of your uniform
Like work, but after work, take it off
My shaikhs believed the necktie is a sign of Christianity
They say it has some Christian history attachment to it
Also, the clothing cannot be made of pigskin
The clothing cannot be see through as well
As long as these conditions are met, your clothing is halal
Jeans is not haram unless it is tight
However, women have to wear a hijab and jilbab over it
If they wear pants, they have to wear a jilbab over it (trousers)


The ayah also means that you are not allowed to turn your back on the dunya
And don’t turn your back on the fine things in life
Because Allah doesn’t allow you to do this
Allah (swt) says you should have fun in 28:77

But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and do good as Allah has been good to you, and seek not mischief in the land. Verily, Allah likes not the Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts). (Al-Qasas 28:77)

Why do you want to turn your back from the dunya
When Allah says you should not forget your portion of the dunya?
In the above ayah
If you turn your back to the dunya, many of your kids will turn their back on Islam
Because you make Islam boring
The ayah also means when you take Islam into a community,
You are not allowed to say their culture is haram
Unless their culture is in conflict with Shariah

Allah said you should enjoy yourself in the dunya
And you will enjoy yourself also in the paradise
As a muslim you will get double enjoyment, Dunya and the afterlife.
The kuffar has no enjoyment in the hereafter
Don’t turn your back on the dunya
Don’t forget your portion of the dunya
Muslims aren't allowed to forget the Dunya
Your kids turn their back on Islam because they find it boring
This is the meaning of the ayah

Reminder: The foods are halal of the Jews and Christians
This is Allah’s words in 5:5

Made lawful to you this day are At­Tayyibat [all kinds of Halal (lawful) foods, which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, etc., milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits, etc.). The food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals, etc.) of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them. (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before your time, when you have given their due Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage), desiring chastity (i.e. taking them in legal wedlock) not committing illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. And whosoever disbelieves in the Oneness of Allah and in all the other Articles of Faith [i.e. His (Allah's), Angels, His Holy Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection and Al­Qadar (Divine Preordainments)], then fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers. (Al-Ma'idah 5:5)

The slaughtering of the Jews and Christians is halal for you to eat out of necessity
The meat of the people of the book is halal for you to eat.
This verse also says you should not take girlfriend
Allah (swt) mentioned girlfriend here in the Quran

The people that say they don’t accept eating the slaughtering of Jews and Christians
Claim the Jews and Christians today are different from the ones before
When you make that statement, you trap yourself
Because the Ulama will use the Quran to refute your statement

You may marry a woman from the people of the book out of necessity.

Ibn Jareer al-Tabari (rh) said, commenting on what 'Umar said to Hudhayfah and Talhah: Rather 'Umar objected to Talhah and Hudhayfah (may Allaah have mercy on them) marrying the Jewish and Christian women lest the people follow their example in that, and lose interest in the Muslim women, or for other similar reasons, so he commanded them to let them go. [Tafseer al-Tabari (4/366) No. 4222]

It was narrated that Shaqeeq ibn Salamah said: Hudhayfah married a Jewish woman, and 'Umar wrote to him saying: Let her go. He wrote to him saying: Are you saying that she is haraam so that I should let her go? He said: I am not claiming that it is haraam; rather I am worried lest you marry the immoral ones among them. [Narrated by Ibn Jareer al-Tabari in his Tafseer (4/366-367) No. 4223; classed as saheeh by al-Haafiz Ibn Katheer in his Tafseer (1/583)]

Omar (ra) was afraid that if you marry a Christian girl she could be a floozy
As mentioned in the above hadith
The word floozy means a woman with no morals
She is the village bike

Surely, they have disbelieved who say: "Allah is the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary)." But the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: "O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong­doers) there are no helpers. (Al-Ma'idah 5:72)
Surely, disbelievers are those who said: "Allah is the third of the three (in a Trinity)." But there is no ilah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilah (God -Allah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them. (Al-Ma'idah 5:73)

Allah made takfir on the Christians who lived in the time of the Prophet in the above ayah
After Allah made takfir on them, He allowed you to eat their slaughter

The council of Nicea was held 200 years before the birth of Mohammad (PBUH)
This introduced the trinity to Christianity
Those who say the Christians at the time of the Prophet were different
From the Christians of today have been proven wrong in 5:72-73
The trinity existed when the verse about their food being lawful to you was revealed
Before you come to debate, get your history right
Why would Allah address the trinity if it didn't exist?
The Quran and history are against your argument

Everything in the sea is also halal

Abu Huraira reported that a man asked the Prophet (SAW): 'We travel in the sea and we carry with us little water. If we used it for wudu then we would be suffering thirst! So should we still use this water for wudu?' The Prophet (SAW) replied: "Its [sea] water is pure and its dead meat [fish and whatever lives in sea and die by leaving it] is Halal to eat" [Sunan Tirmidhi (1/100) No. 69, Sunan Abu Dawud (1/21) No. 83, Sunan al-Nasa'i (1/50) No. 59, Sunan Ibn Majah (1/250) No. 386, Sunan al-Darime (1/201) No. 729, Musnad Ahmad (2/361) No. 8720]

The Hanifi madhab says otherwise
The Hanifis don’t eat crab, sea snake, crocodile...
They don't accept this hadith
They don’t eat shrimps
Actually, they say there are exceptions to this rule
The Hanbali and Maliki accept this hadith at face value
They allow you to eat saltwater crocodile
Uthaymeen accepts this hadith

Shaykh Ibn â Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, after stating that it is more likely that it is permissible to eat crocodiles and other sea creatures: The correct view is that they are not excluded from that, and that all sea creatures that live only in water are halaal, whether alive or dead, because of the general meaning of the verse that we have quoted above â i.e., the verse (interpretation of the meaning): â Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water game and its use for foodâ al-Maaâidah 5:96.  Al-Sharh al-Mumtiâ (15/35).

 Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, after stating that it is more likely that it is permissible to eat crocodiles and sea snakes: The correct view is that nothing is excluded from that, and that all the sea creatures which can only live in water are halaal, alive or dead, because of the general meaning of the verse – i.e., “Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water game and its use for food” [al-Maa’idah 5:96]. End quote from Sharh al-Mumti’ (6/327). Fajr edition.

Uthaymeen was the best scholar of fiqh for the century
The argument that you can eat crocodile seems a bit extreme in my opinion
I prefer the hadith that everything is halal in the see except saltwater crocodile
But Uthaymeen has more knowledge than me


Say (O Muhammad SAW) : "(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al­Fawahish (great evil sins, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge." (Al-A'raf 7:33)

What is the tafsir of this ayah? The scholars often repeat this ayah
Fawahish means unlawful intercourse.
One of the signs of the last day is that
People will commit unlawful intercourse openly

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) turned to us and said: 'O Muhajirin, there are five things with which you will be tested, and I seek refuge with Allah lest you live to see them: Immorality never appears among a people to such an extent that they commit it openly, but plagues and diseases that were never known among the predecessors will spread among them. They do not cheat in weights and measures but they will be stricken with famine, severe calamity and the oppression of their rulers. They do not withhold the Zakah of the wealth, but rain will be withheld from the sky, and were it not for the animals, no rain would fall on them. They do not break the covenant with Allah and His Messenger, but Allah will enable their enemies to overpower them and take some of what is in their hands. Unless their leaders rule according to the Book of Allah and seek all good from that which Allah has revealed, Allah will cause them to fight one another. [Sunan Ibn Majah (Arabic/English), Vol. 5, pg. 222-223, Hadith #4019]

There is another hadith about a man passing by a couple committing intercourse openly
And will tell them to go behind a wall
This hadith has already come to pass
All these are called signs before the day of Judgement

There is a hadith where the Prophet (saw) says Allah is jealous

Narrated Al-Mughira: Sa'd bin 'Ubada said, "If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him (behead him) with the blade of my sword." This news reached Allah's Messenger (SAW) who then said, "You people are astonished at Sa'd's Ghira. By Allah, I have more Ghira than he, and Allah has more Ghira than I, and because of Allah's Ghira, He has made unlawful Shameful deeds and sins (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) done in open and in secret.
And there is none who likes that the people should repent to Him and beg His pardon than Allah, and for this reason He sent the warners and the givers of good news. And there is none who likes to be praised more than Allah does, and for this reason, Allah promised to grant Paradise (to the doers of good)." [al-Bukhari (7416) and Muslim (1499)]

Due to His jealousy He has made Fawahisha haram whether it is done secretly or openly
What is the meaning of unrighteous oppression?
Unrighteous oppression is when you oppress people who did not wrong you
To pick on those who did not wrong you, or
When you take revenge, you go beyond limits
For example, US said they need to take revenge because of 9/11
They went after Iraq and Afghanistan
Why did they go to Iraq?
You are upset with one person in the family
You go in the home and kill everyone including the cats and dogs to take your revenge
That is called unrighteous oppression

And if you punish (your enemy, O you believers in the Oneness of Allah), then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). (An-Nahl 16:126)

Allah revealed 16:126 when they mutilated Hamza (ra) at the battle
The Prophet (saw) said he was going to mutilate 100 kufaar as revenge
This is why Allah sent this verse

When Allah said that they should not mutilate the dead, but to have sabr
The Prophet decided to have sabr instead of mutilating
He was very upset because of the way they mutilated his body
They stole Hamza's body parts and took them back to Makkah

Allah is saying that if you mutilate their dead because they did it to you
Then it is halal
But to have sabr is better
An eye of an eye is halal
When Allah said to have sabr is better,
The Prophet decided to have sabr and not mutilate their dead.
Allah (swt) also says in the Ayah He has forbidden shirk

There are 13 types of shirk


And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Baqarah 2:165)

Allah (swt) spoke about it in the above ayah


It is only Shaitan (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya' [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger, Muhammad SAW)], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers. (Aali Imran 3:175)

Allah (swt) spoke about it in 3:175 above


Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say) : "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah." Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever. (Az-Zumar 39:3)

Allah pronounce those who put themselves an intermediator above 39:3


...and put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed." (Al-Ma'idah 5:23)

Allah (swt) spoke about it in the above ayah


The evidence is 6:121

...and if you obey them [by making Al­Maytatah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikun (polytheists) [because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that which Allah has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allah is polytheism]. (Al-An'am 6:121)

You become a kafir just like the pagan Arabs if you eat the meat that is unlawful


To make supplication to others besides Allah
Your dua is an act of ibada (worship)

Nu’man ibn Bashir (RA) narrated the Prophet (SAW) said, “The supplication is itself worship.” Then he recited. And your Lord says, “Call upon Me, and I shall answer you. Surely those who are too arrogant to worship Me, they shall enter Hell, disgraced.” (40: 60) [Tirmidhi (5/456) No. 3372, Abu Dawud (2/76) No. 1479, Ibn Majah (5/5) No. 3828, Ahmad (4/271) No. 18410]


...There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. (Ash-Shura 42:11)

Nothing resembles Allah


"And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him." (Al-Ikhlas 112:4)

Allah has no co-equal
Even when you study fiqh, they use the same word for marriage.
She has to marry someone on her level
Ex. a doctor cannot marry a trash collector
They don't allow this because they say that man is not her co-equal
Only the Maliki madhab allow this marriage


They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God - Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)[]. Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)." (At-Tawbah 9:31)


The man who makes up a new religion is a legislator; he is legislating
The novice who follows him is doing the shirk of obedience

...and He makes none to share in His Decision and His Rule." (Al-Kahf 18:26)

Or even do they have associates (with Allah) who have legislated for them as the religion that which Allah has not given permission? And had it not been for the Word of Verdict, indeed it would have been decreed between them, and surely the unjust will have a painful torment. (Ash Shura 42:21) [Dr Ghali Translation]

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728H): “Whenever a person makes halal what is haraam by consensus or makes haraam what is halal by consensus or replaces the Sharee’ah that is agreed upon by consensus, then he is a Kaffir by the agreement of the scholars of Fiqh.” – “Al-Fataawa”, Vol. 3/267

Legislation is for Allah alone. He makes none to share in His rule.
Why is he a kafir? Because he's legislating


Ibn 'Umar (RA) said: I heard a man saying: "No, by the Ka'bah." I admonished him: 'Do not swear by anything besides Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying, "He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk."' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/110) No. 1535, Musnad Ahmad (2/125) No. 6072, Sunan Abu Dawud (3/223) No. 3251, Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/330) No. 7814]

Anybody who swears by other than Allah has committed shirk
As mentioned in the above hadith


Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: "O people, save yourselves from this shirk (ash-Shirk al-Khafi) for it is more inconspicuous than the creeping of ant." So someone, whom Allah willed to say, said: 'How do we save ourselves from it while it is more inconspicuous than the creeping of ant ya Rasool Allah?' Prophet (SAW) said: “Say: Allahumma inni audhubika minal nushrika bika shayaan na'alamuhu, wa nastaghfiruka lima la na'alam (O Allah we take Your refuge from doing shirk with You knowingly, and ask for Your forgiveness for doing it unknowingly)" [Musnad Ahmed (4/403) No. 19622 and Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah (6/70) No. 29547]

Stay away of riyyah (showing off).
This shirk doesn’t make you a kafir because this shirk is minor, not major
It only nullifies the act done showing off

Prophet (pbuh) said: “The thing I fear for you most is ash-Shirk al-Asghar (minor shirk). The Companions asked O’ Messenger of Allah, what is minor shirk? He replied, ‘ar-Riya’ (showing off), for verily Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection when people are receiving their rewards, ‘Go to those for whom you were showing off in the material world and see if you can find any reward from them.” (Reported by al-Imaam Ahmad, at-Tabaraani, and al-Bayhaqee)


Allah refuted those who believe that in the ayah below:

It is not given to any human being that Allah should speak to him unless (it be) by Inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He sends a Messenger to reveal what He wills by His Leave. Verily, He is Most High, Most Wise[] . (Ash-Shura 42:51)

For Allah to come down in the form of a man is impossible.
The man that Louis Farrakhan believes is god was a drug dealer
Master Farad Muhammad
Use Ash-Shura 42:51 to refute Christians and the 'nation of Islam'
They said the Whiteman is a devil, but this man was a white man
He was selling drugs in California
The Christians say Jesus (as) was god in flesh when he was on earth
If Master Farad Muhammad was Allah, how can he be arrested for selling drugs?

If Jesus was God in flesh - use Matthew 19:17 to check-mate the Christians

And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. (Matthew 19:17) King James Version

Because Jesus said "why call me good? No one is good except God"
Also use Matthew 24:36 to check-mate the Christians

But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (Matthew 24:36) King James Version

Jesus said he didn't know when Judgment day is

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. (John 5:30) King James Version

In John 5:30 Jesus said he has no authority to do anything
The question is how can God be stripped of His authority?
This will prove to the Christians that they are hypocrites
Here is the knock-out punch

And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. (John 5:37) King James Version

Jesus is saying that he cannot be God because his has neither seen Him nor heard His voice
It has never happened and will never happen
This refutes their argument
Jesus said this because he did not want people to think that he is God
You should know this hujjah by heart
Use it to debate with the Christians

There is a concept called Wahdaltul wujood (Union)
This means a man can become so pious until he becomes Allah
This is the ideology of the goofy sufi
They believe when you become Allah, you don't have to pray anymore
And everything haram has now become halal for you
The sufi purpose of practicing sufism is to accomplish wahdatul wujood (union with Allah)
This concept is shirk
It was introduced to the Muslims by Ibn Arabe
There are two Ibn Arabe
Ibn Arabe al Malike (a sincere scholar)
Ibn Arabe as Sufi
We are condemning ibn Arabe as Sufi
