(Allah) said (to Iblis) "Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all." (Al-A'raf 7:18)

- So Allah has promised anyone who follows the devil; He will fill them in hellfire.
- The devil assumed that he will win the battle of hearts and minds.

Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)." (Al-A'raf 7:17)

- Iblis said: ‘You will not find most of them to be thankful to you.’

And indeed Iblis (Satan) did prove true his thought about them, and they followed him, all except a group of true believers (in the Oneness of Allah). (20) And he (Iblis Satan) had no authority over them, except that We might test him, who believes in the Hereafter from him who is in doubt about it. And your Lord is a Hafiz over everything. (AllKnower of everything i.e. He keeps record of each and every person as regards deeds, and then He will reward them accordingly). (Saba' 34:20-21)

- Allah said the devil's assumption was correct because most of mankind follows him.
- Only a few people will believe in Allah, even after they believe, they commit shirk.

And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly. (Yusuf 12:103)

- Democracy is the greatest shirk.

And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him [i.e. they are Mushrikun -polytheists - see Verse 6: 121]. (Yusuf 12:106)

(Allah) said: "Go, and whosoever of them follows you, surely! Hell will be the recompense of you (all) an ample recompense. (63) "And Istafziz [literally means: befool them gradually] those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah's disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry, mutually share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways usury, etc., or by committing illegal sexual intercourse, etc.), and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but deceit. (64) "Verily! My slaves (i.e the true believers of Islamic Monotheism), you have no authority over them. And All-Sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian." (Al-Isra 17:63-65)

"And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrongdoers)." (Al-A'raf 7:19)

- The fitnah for Adam was just a tree, ‘curiosity killed the cat.’
- The Dunya has many fitnahs.

AYAH 20-21

Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." (20) And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere wellwishers for you both." (Al-A'raf 7:20-21)

- he tricked Adam into believing if he ate the apple; he will live forever.
- People exploit your fears.
- If you swear by Allah, you can deceive the Muslims.

They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. Verily, evil is what they used to do. (Al-Munafiqun 63:2)

- You can't defecate, in Heavan, if you do you, are thrown down to earth.
- A believer can be deceived with: 'W'Allahi'
- But the prophet (SAW) said that a believer is shrewd, sharp and careful

Anas Ibn Malik narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "A believer is shrewd, sharp and careful." [Quda'ee (d. 454 H) in 'Musnad al-Shihab' (Vol. 1 pg. 107) No. 128]

- Also a believer does not get bitten twice.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: "A believer is not bitten from the same hole twice.” [Related by al-Bukhari (6133) and Muslim (2998)]

- Adam (AS) was bitten by iblis, although Allah had warned Adam to stay away from Iblis
- saying that he is your open enemy

Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. (117) Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked. (118) And you (will) suffer not from thirst therein nor from the sun's heat. (119) Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered to him, saying: "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?" (120) Then they both ate of the tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray. (Ta-Ha 20:117-121)

- Adam (AS) and Musa (AS) had a debate
- Musa (AS) said to Adam (AS) that it is due to you that we were thrown out of heaven

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet narrated: Adam and Musa disputed with one another. Musa said, “O Adam! You are the one whom Allah created with His Own Hand. He blew into you His Spirit, but you misled the people and drove them out of Paradise.” So, Adam said to him, “You are Musa! Allah chose you for direct conversation with Him and He wrote (the Torah) for you with His Own Hand. You blame me for something that I did which Allah had recorded against me even before He had created the heavens and earth.” So, Adam out-debated Musa. [related by al-Bukhari (3409), Muslim (2652), Tirmidhi (2134), Ahmad (7623), Ibn Majah (80), Abu Dawud (4701)]

- So Adam (AS) with his reply won the argument.
- Insaan fell from a life of grace in heaven to a wretched life upon earth.
- Which is why Musa (AS) debated with Adam (AS); blaming him for our predicament.
- We must not repetitively say: ‘w'Allahi’, as it is not a good practise
- as you increase the risk of breaking the oath

Allah will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masakin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allah make clear to you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:89)

So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?" (Al-A'raf 7:22)

- Iblis used w'Allahi to trick Adam
- Adam was naive and thus did not realise that a being can say w'Allahi and lie.
- Such a liar comes under the category of one of the types of people who Allah will not look at in the akhirah.
- Iblis had great envy towards Adam and envy is an extremely bad thing, it drove iblis to do what he did.
- Qiyas = analogy/ deduction
- Iblis used qiyas to decide that fire was better than clay, but his qiyas was incorrect
- On disobeying Allah their heavenly clothes were removed and they became naked.
- So they covered their nakedness with leaves of heaven. Shyness overtook them.
- Shyness is a branch of eeman.

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is the branch of faith." [al-Bukhari (8) and Muslim (56)]

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) passed by an Ansari man who was exhorting his brother to be modest. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Let him be, for modesty is part of faith.” [al-Bukhari (24) and Muslim (36)]

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Hayaa is part of Imaan and Imaan is in Paradise. Lewdness is part of hardness of heart and hardness of heart is in the Fire.” [Musnad Ahmad (2/501) No. 10519]

They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers." (Al-A'raf 7:23)

- So they acknowledged their wrongdoing and turned in repentance to Allah, making this dua
- The Goofy Sufis claim: ‘that Adam repented to Allah in the name of Muhammad (SAW)’
- and it is due to this that he was forgiven.
- This hadith is famous, but it is a fabricated hadith.

“When Adam committed his sin, he said, ‘O Lord, I ask You by virtue of Muhammad to forgive me.’ Allah said, ‘O Adam, how do you know of Muhammad when I have not yet created him?’ He said, ‘O Lord, when You created me with Your own hand, and breathed into me the soul that You created, I raised my head and saw written on the pillars of the Throne, La ilaha ill-Allah Muhammad Rasool Allah [There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah]. Then I knew that You would not mention in conjunction with Your name any but the most beloved of Your creation to You.’ Allah said, ‘You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the most beloved of My creation to Me. Pray to me by virtue of Him, for I have forgiven you. Were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created you.” [It was transmitted by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak (2/672) No. 4228, Classified: Fabricated (Mawdoo) by adh-Dhahabi in his Talkhees, also see Silsilah-Daeefah No. 25]

- It is commonly quoted in their bid’ah gatherings especially milad an-Nabi.
- Brelvis, Goofy-Sufis and Tableeghi are known to quote this often.

(Allah) said: "Get down, one of you an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Hawwa (Eve), and Shaitan (Satan), etc.]. On earth will be a dwellingplace for you and an enjoyment, - for a time." (Al-A'raf 7:24)

- The reason why insaan are enemies to one another is because
- they fight over things such as: natural resources, women, jobs, money etc
- Whereas in heaven everything was ample and provided
- and on earth we have to fend for ourselves
- E.g. Bush and Blair’s invasion of Iraq was due to a greed for oil

He said: "Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e. resurrected)." (Al-A'raf 7:25)

- Life on earth is temporary
- we are simply passing by

Thereof (the earth) We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you out once again. (Ta-Ha 20:55)

- the permanent abode is the akhirah.
- We must be in this world as a traveller/wayfarer:

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) took me by the shoulder and said, “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.” And Ibn Umar (RA) used to say, “In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.” [Sahih Bukhari (8/89) No. 6416, Sunan Tirmidhi (4/567-568] No. 2333, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/232) No. 4114, Musnad Ahmad (2/132) No. 6156]

O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth). (Al-A'raf 7:26)

- Garments are a barakah from Allah
- When the prophet wore a new garment he would make a dua.

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (RA) reported: When Messenger of Allah (SAW) wore a new garment, he would name it. For instance, a turban or shirt or cloak and would supplicate:
اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِيهِ، أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهُ وَخَيْرَ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ
“Allahumma lakal-hamdu, Anta kasautanihi, as`aluka khairahu wa khaira ma suni'a lahu, wa a`udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.”
(O Allah, all the praise is for You that You have given it to me to put on. I ask You its goodness and the goodness of the purpose for which it was made, and I seek Your Protection from its evil and the evil of the purpose for which it was made). [Sunan Abu Dawud (4/41-42) No. 4020, Sunan Tirmidhi (4/239) No. 1767, Musnad Ahmad (3/30) No. 11266, Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/213) No. 7408, adh-Dhahabi said on the conditions of Muslim]

O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya' (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not. (Al-A'raf 7:27)

'Abdullah bin Umar narrated: the Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to often recite this supplication in the morning and when the night falls:
اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوَرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعاتي، اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وعن شمالي، ومن فَوْقِي، وأعوذ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي
“Allahumma-ustur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-ihfazni min bayni yadaiya wa min khalfi,wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali,wa min fawqi,wa a'uthu bi'athamatika an ughtala min tahti.”
(O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this life and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, life, family and wealth. O Allah! Cover my errors and reassure me in times of difficulty. O Allah! Protect me from before me, from behind me, from my right, from my left and from above me. I seek refuge with Your greatness from being killed from below me.) Waki’ commented (about being killed from below), "This refers to earthquakes.'' [Musnad Ahmad (2/25) No. 4785, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/318-319) No. 5074, as-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (9/210) No. 10325, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/37) No. 3871, Sahih Ibn Hibban (3/241) No. 961, Mustadrak al-Haakim (1/698) No. 1902]

- As the shaytan promised to attack us from the back, front, right and left,
- Muhammad (SAW) sought refuge from the same directions.

And when they commit a Fahisha (evil deed, going round the Ka'bah in naked state, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.), they say: "We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has commanded us of it." Say: "Nay, Allah never commands of Fahisha. Do you say of Allah what you know not? (Al-A'raf 7:28)

- When a person is upon misguidance, they blame their forefathers saying: ‘we are following them.’

When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah has sent down." They say: "Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following." (Would they do that!) Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided? (Al-Baqarah 2:170)

- The Fahisha Allah refers to here is, making tawaf naked,
- as it was a common practise for the pagans in those days.
- Adam and Hawa covering their nakedness in heaven; this proves that to do so is a part of insaans nature.
- so these pagans made tawaaf naked and then lied upon Allah saying that we are following Allah’s command.

And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah, while he is being invited to Islam? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers) folk. (As-Saff 61:7)

- they also had no gheerah as they allowed their women to do the same.

Narrated By Abu Huraira: The Prophet; said, “Indeed, Allah has Ghayrah, and the faithful believer has Ghayrah, and the Ghayrah which Allah has is provoked when a believer commits that which Allah has forbidden.” [al-Bukhari (4925) and Muslim (2761)]

Abdullah ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Three people will not enter paradise and Allah will not look to them on the Day of Judgment: the one who is disobedient to his parents, the woman who imitates men and the ad-Dayooth (cuckold, weak man who feels no jealousy over his womenfolk)..." [Musnad Ahmad (2/134) No. 6180, Musnad al-Bazzar (12/270) No. 6051, al-Sunnan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (2/63) No. 2354, al-Mu’jam al-Awsat al-Tabarani (3/51) No. 2443]

Say (O Muhammad SAW): My Lord has commanded justice and (said) that you should face Him only (i.e. worship none but Allah and face the Qiblah, i.e. the Ka'bah at Makkah during prayers) in each and every place of worship, in prayers (and not to face other false deities and idols), and invoke Him only making your religion sincere to Him by not joining in worship any partner to Him and with the intention that you are doing your deeds for Allah's sake only. As He brought you (into being) in the beginning, so shall you be brought into being (on the Day of Resurrection) [in two groups, one as a blessed one (believers), and the other as a wretched one (disbelievers)]. (Al-A'raf 7:29)

- The people of A'raf have an equal amount of good and bad deeds
- so they will be delayed on the bridge for a while until they are forgiven and admitted into paradise.

A group He has guided, and a group deserved to be in error; (because) surely they took the Shayatin (devils) as Auliya' (protectors and helpers) instead of Allah, and consider that they are guided. (Al-A'raf 7:30)

- Anyone who follows a deen other than Islam has taken shaytaan as his awliya

O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying and going round (the Tawaf of ) the Ka'bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance). (Al-A'raf 7:31)

- This ayah means that we must avoid both arrogance and extravagance

Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaitan (Devil Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Al-Isra 17:27)

- We must not waste food, e.g. a man may invite 20 people for dinner, but cook enough to feed 50 people.
- This ayah also instructs us to wear our best cloths to the masjid.
- this adornment, includes having a bath, brushing teeth, wearing perfume and wearing clean clothes to the mosque

Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Wear white clothes, for they are (considered as) your best clothes, and enshroud your dead in them.” [Musnad Ahmad (1/247) No. 2219, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/8) No. 3878, Sunan at-Tirmidhi (3/310) No. 994, Sunan Ibn Majah (4/580) No. 3567]

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo‘ (4/405): Doing ghusl on Friday is Sunnah, not obligatory in the sense that not doing it is a sin, and there is no difference of opinion among us concerning that. With regard to the one for whom it is Sunnah, there are four views, but the correct view that is supported by the text and regard by the author and the majority as the correct view is the following: It is Sunnah for everyone who wants to attend Jumu‘ah, man, woman, child, traveller, slave and others, because of the apparent meaning of the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar, and because the aim is cleanliness, and they are all the same with regard to that. It is not Sunnah for the one who does not intend to attend, even if he is one of those who should attend Jumu‘ah, because of the meaning of the hadeeth and because the reason is no longer present; and because of the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar, according to which the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever comes to Jumu‘ah, man or woman, let him do ghusl, and whoever does not come to it, man or woman, does not have to do ghusl.” Narrated by al-Bayhaqi with this wording and with a saheeh isnaad.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in al-Fataawa al-Kubra (5/307): It is obligatory to do ghusl on Fridays for one who is sweaty or has an odour that may offend others.

Jabir (RA) said: The Prophet (SAW) said, "He who has eaten garlic or onion should keep away from us or our mosques." [al-Bukhari (855) and Muslim (564)]
The narration in Muslim is: "He who has eaten onion or garlic or leek should not approach our mosque, because the angels are also offended by the strong smells) that offend the children of Adam."

- The angels are offended with bad smells, just as we are.
- All these examples are important aspects of adornment.
