(NOTES & AUDIO) Tafsir Surah Al ' Araf - Part 11 - Musa (as) And The Pharaoh

Tafsir Surah Al ' Araf - Part 11 - Musa (as) And The Pharaoh
By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
Thursday 2nd October 2014

AYAH 103

Then after them We sent Musa (Moses) with Our Signs to Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them. So see how was the end of the Mufsidun (mischief-makers, corrupts, etc.). (Al-A'raf 7:103)

What is the meaning of the word THEM?
THEM means the five Prophets (as)
The five Prophets are Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut and Shuayb

AYAH 104

And Musa (Moses) said: "O Fir'aun (Pharaoh)! I am a Messenger from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). (Al-A'raf 7:104)

Allah (swt) sent Musa (as) to the Pharaoh and spoke about it in 20:24-30

"Go to Fir'aun (Pharaoh)! Verily, he has transgressed (all bounds in disbelief and disobedience, and has behaved as an arrogant, and as a tyrant)." (Ta-Ha 20:24)
[Musa (Moses)] said: "O my Lord! Open for me my chest (grant me self-confidence, contentment, and boldness). (Ta-Ha 20:25)
"And ease my task for me; (Ta-Ha 20:26)
"And make loose the knot (the defect) from my tongue, (i.e. remove the incorrectness from my speech) [That occurred as a result of a brand of fire which Musa (Moses) put in his mouth when he was an infant]. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 16, Page 159]. (Ta-Ha 20:27)
"That they understand my speech, (Ta-Ha 20:28)
"And appoint for me a helper from my family, (Ta-Ha 20:29)
"Harun (Aaron), my brother; (Ta-Ha 20:30)

Musa put fire on his tongue when he was a child
That caused his speech problem
The Pharaoh used his speech problem and his poverty as an argument against him
When he went to speak to the people

"Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? (Az-Zukhruf 43:52)
"Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" (Az-Zukhruf 43:53)

For you to use someone’s disability against him means you are very low
Did you know that the scholars used this ayah to prove
That the Pharaoh was not a real atheist
They said atheist do not believe in angels

AYAH 105

"Proper it is for me that I say nothing concerning Allah but the truth. Indeed I have come unto you from your Lord with a clear proof. So let the Children of Israel depart along with me." (Al-A'raf 7:105)

Musa here is saying that it is not proper for him to lie about something Allah revealed
Moreover, he has brought evidences
The worst man is the one who lies against Allah

AYAH 106

[Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "If you have come with a sign, show it forth, - if you are one of those who tell the truth." (Al-A'raf 7:106)

This was a challenge to show a sign,
Similar to when the people of Salih (as) said to him to make a camel come out of a rock
Likewise, when the Quraish asked Muhammad (saw)
To make the moon split and Allah blessed Muhammad (saw) with the miracle

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad SAW to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). (Al-Qamar 54:1)

And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: "This is continuous magic." (Al-Qamar 54:2)

During the lifetime of the Prophet the moon was split into two parts and on that the Prophet said, "Bear witness (to thus)." [Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 830]

When the Pharaoh asked Musa to provide signs he got to prove his message,
Allah blessed Musa with the miracles
Two on the spot but 7 more were yet to come

AYAH 107 - 108

Then [Musa (Moses)] threw his stick and behold! it was a serpent, manifest! (Al-A'raf 7:107)
And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white (with radiance) for the beholders. (Al-A'raf 7:108)

The Pharaoh thought the stick of Musa (as) was just an ordinary stick
But it turned into a snake when he threw it down
It is one of the nine signs Allah (swt) gave to Musa

"And put your hand into your bosom, it will come forth white without hurt. (These are) among the nine signs (you will take) to Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people, they are a people who are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (An-Naml 27:12)

What was the response of the Pharaoh and his chiefs when they saw these two signs of Allah?

AYAH 109

The chiefs of the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer; (Al-A'raf 7:109)

AYAH 110

"He wants to get you out of your land, so what do you advise?" (Al-A'raf 7:110)

Did you know that Allah said they rejected the signs but in their hearts they believed?
They rejected the signs in the name of pride, arrogance, haughtiness

And they belied them (those Ayat) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their ownselves were convinced thereof [i.e. those (Ayat) are from Allah, and Musa (Moses) is the Messenger of Allah in truth, but they disliked to obey Musa (Moses), and hated to believe in his Message of Monotheism]. So see what was the end of the Mufsidun (disbelievers, disobedient to Allah, evil-doers, liars.). (An-Naml 27:14)

These are mentioned the hadith below

Ibn ‘Abbas, Mujahid, ‘Ikrimah, Ash-Sha’bi and Qatadah said: "They are his hand, his staff, the years of famine, the failure of the crops, the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs and the blood.'' [Tafseer Ibn Katheer (5/124)]

This Ayah proves that many kuffaar reject faith in the name of pride and arrogance

The chiefs of the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer; (Al-A'raf 7:109)

We studied five previous prophets who came before Musa (as)
At all times Allah (swt) said the Chiefs of the people turned them away
From the message and caused them to disbelieve

And they will say: "Our Lord! Verily, we obeyed our chiefs and our great ones, and they misled us from the (Right) Way. (Al-Ahzab 33:67)
Our Lord! give them double torment and curse them with a mighty curse!" (Al-Ahzab 33:68)

At all times, it is always the Chiefs who plot and plan against the truth
And causing the people not to believe

In order to ridicule Musa, the Pharaoh asked to have a tower built
So he could see if a God was up there

Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "O chiefs! I know not that you have an ilah (a god) other than me, so kindle for me (a fire), O Haman, to bake (bricks out of) clay, and set up for me a Sarhan (a lofty tower, or palace, etc.) in order that I may look at (or look for) the Ilah (God) of Musa (Moses); and verily, I think that he [Musa (Moses)] is one of the liars."
(Al-Qasas 28:38)

On October 4, 1957 the Russians launched Sputnik, a space program
They repeated what the Pharaoh said verbatim

They said when we were in space we did not see any God up there
They repeated what the Pharaoh said because their hearts are alike

….Their hearts are alike, (Al-Baqarah 2:118)

Then [Musa (Moses)] showed him the great sign (miracles). (An-Nazi'at 79:20)
But [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] belied and disobeyed; (An-Nazi'at 79:21)
Then he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah). (An-Nazi'at 79:22)
Then he gathered his people and cried aloud, (An-Nazi'at 79:23)
Saying: "I am your lord, most high", (An-Nazi'at 79:24)
So Allah, seized him with punishment for his last [i.e. his saying: "I am your lord, most high") (see Verse 79:24)] and first [(i.e. his saying, "O chiefs! I know not that you have a god other than I" (see Verse 28:38)] transgression. (An-Nazi'at 79:25)

The Pharaoh was a narcissist and insecure
He ridiculed the disability of Musa because he was a low life scum of the earth
The kuffaar have their salaf, Nimrod - who used to have sex with his mother
And they copy Nimrod to the letter
They love Nimrod and the Pharaoh

"He wants to get you out of your land, so what do you advise?" (Al-A'raf 7:110)

This ayah proves they were insecure
Allah said what they feared came to past

And to establish them in the land, and We let Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and Haman and their hosts receive from them that which they feared. (Al-Qasas 28:6)

Because their kingdom was destroyed
They used to kill the boys and allow the girls to live
To ensure the continuity of their kingdom

AYAH 111

They said: "Put him and his brother off (for a time), and send callers (men) to the cities to collect (and) - (Al-A'raf 7:111)

Here "put them off" means Put them in prison for a while or lock them up
Then we will bring 70 magicians to defeat them in magic
This was to be done publicly

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, “The magicians were seventy men who were magicians in the morning, but witnesses of faith by the time evening came.” Ibn Abi Hatim also reported that Al-Awza’i said, “When the magicians fell down in prostration, Paradise was raised up before them until they were looking at it.” It is reported from Sa`id bin Jubayr that he said concerning Allah’s statement, (So the magicians fell down prostrate.) “They saw their places (in Paradise) made clear before them while they were in their prostration.” `Ikrimah and Al-Qasim bin Abi Bizzah both said the same.

"Then verily, we can produce magic the like thereof; so appoint a meeting between us and you, which neither we, nor you shall fail to keep, in an open wide place where both shall have a just and equal chance (and beholders could witness the competition)." (Ta-Ha 20:58)
[Musa (Moses)] said: "Your appointed meeting is the day of the festival, and let the people assemble when the sun has risen (forenoon)." (Ta-Ha 20:59)
So Fir'aun (Pharaoh) withdrew, devised his plot and then came back. (Ta-Ha 20:60)

They had a big day in Egypt like Christmas
Musa (as) knew about it because he grew up in the house of the Pharaoh
The Pharaoh even promised the magicians an increase in salary
And he would make them of those close to him in status in the kingdom

In those days it was an honor to be close to the Pharaoh
Example, if you were a friend of the President and went to have dinner with him
At the White House, it would be an honor
In the KSA it is an honor to be invited to visit the King
When this happens in the KSA they show it on TV

AYAH 112

"That they bring up to you all well-versed sorcerers." (Al-A'raf 7:112)

The Pharaoh had 70,000 magicians but only wanted 70
To challenge Musa on the day of the great festival
These were the best of the best

AYAH 113 - 114
And so the sorcerers came to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). They said: "Indeed there will be a (good) reward for us if we are the victors." (Al-A'raf 7:113)
He said: "Yes, and moreover you will (in that case) be of the nearest (to me)." (Al-A'raf 7:114)

The Pharaoh would have given them a great reward and make them close to him
If they won the challenge

AYAH 115

They said: "O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" (Al-A'raf 7:115)

AYAH 116

He [Musa (Moses)] said: "Throw you (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic. (Al-A'raf 7:116)

Many scholars believe that magic started in Babylon
When the two angels Harut and Marut came to Babylon during the era of Sulaiman (as)
My shaikhs told me this is not the case
Because Musa lived long before Sulaiman
At least 1000 years before
And magic existed in the time of Prophet Musa (as)
Because Allah said in 7:116 the magicians of the Pharaoh displayed a great magic
Those who believe magic started in the time of Sulaiman are wrong

AYAH 117

And We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying) : "Throw your stick," and behold! It swallowed up straight away all the falsehoods which they showed. (Al-A'raf 7:117)

AYAH 118

Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. (Al-A'raf 7:118)

AYAH 119

So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. (Al-A'raf 7:119)

AYAH 120

And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. (Al-A'raf 7:120)

When the sorcerers were in sajda, Allah (swt) showed them their destiny in paradise
Even though the Pharaoh threatened to kill them they refused to return to kufr
Because they already saw their destiny in Paradise

So Musa (Moses) conceived a fear in himself (Ta-Ha 20:67)
We (Allah) said: "Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand (Ta-Ha 20:68)
"And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician's trick, and the magician will never be successful, no matter whatever amount (of skill) he may attain." (Ta-Ha 20:69)
So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: "We believe in the Lord of Harun (Aaron) and Musa (Moses)." (Ta-Ha 20:70)
[Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission? Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir'aun Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Moses) (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment." (Ta-Ha 20:71)
They said: "We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. (Ta-Ha 20:72)
"Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh)] reward, and more lasting (as regards punishment in comparison to your punishment)." (Ta-Ha 20:73)

Pharaoh accused the magicians of ganging up with Musa against him
These magicians all died as shuhada (martyr)
They died for what they believed in (Islam)

AYAH 121

They said: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). (Al-A'raf 7:121)

AYAH 122

"The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)." (Al-A'raf 7:122)

AYAH 123

Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "You have believed in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission. Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know. (Al-A'raf 7:123)

AYAH 124

"Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all." (Al-A'raf 7:124)

AYAH 125

They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord. (Al-A'raf 7:125)

AYAH 126

"And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims." (Al-A'raf 7:126)

The magicians made a dua asking Allah to give them sabr and make them die as Muslims
This dua can be found in ayah 7:126
Allah commands us to only die as Muslim

O you who believe! Fear Allah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah. (Aali Imran 3:102)
