(NOTES & AUDIO) Tafsir Surah Al 'Araf - Part 16 - The 12 Sons Of Jacob (as)

Tafsir Surah Al 'Araf - Part 16 - The 12 Sons Of Jacob (as)
By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
Wednesday 15th October 2014

AYAH 157

Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e.Muhammad SAW) whom they find written with them in the Taurāt (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16), - he commands them for Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islāmic Monotheism and all that Islām has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islām has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibāt [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabā'ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.), he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allāh's Covenant), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad SAW), honour him, help him, and follow the light (the Qur'ān) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful. (Al-A'raf 7:157)

This is a very long ayah and I hope to do justice to it

Allah (swt) said in the above ayah that Muhammad (saw) could neither read nor write
This is because if he could, the haters would accuse him of writing the Quran himself
But Allah with His perfect wisdom revealed the Quran to Muhammad (saw)
Who could neither read nor write
When the Angel Gabriel (as) came into the cave and asked him to read
He (the rasul) said he could not read
The angel squeezed him three times saying ‘read’
And Muhammad (saw) repeated he could not read

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), (Al-'Alaq 96:1)

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Qur'ān, Islāmic laws and Islāmic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad SAW). And verily, they had been before in mainfest error; (Al-Jumu'ah 62:2)

Allah (swt) also said in the ayah that Muhammad (saw) is mentioned
In the holy books of the Jews and Christians

Deut 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I.

The prophet Allah is talking about in Deut 18:18 is not Jesus (as)
Allah (swt) is talking about a prophet similar to Musa (as)
And that prophet is Muhammad (saw)
And the evidences for this are:

1. Muhammad (saw) and Musa (as) came about because of Intimacy
- Jesus’ birth was an immaculate conception
The angel Gabriel blew into the sleeve of the Virgin Mary and he was conceived
(she became pregnant)

2. Musa (as) and Muhammad (saw) were accepted by their people
3. Both Musa (as) and Muhammad (saw) were statesmen
4. Their graves are on earth
- Jesus is in heaven, his grave is not on earth
In fact, he is still alive and not dead

5. Musa and Muhammad (saw) got married
- They were family men
- Jesus (as) did not get married

These evidences prove that Muhammad (saw) resembles Musa (as) not Jesus
Therefore he is the one spoken about in the Torah

Jn 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--

The comforter or the advocate is Muhammad (saw) not the Holy Spirit

John 14:16 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Because the Holy Spirit was already on earth.
What is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is Angel Gabriel

Therein descend the angels and the Rûh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] by Allāh's Permission with all Decrees, (Al-Qadr 97:4)
Peace! (All that night, there is Peace and Goodness from Allāh to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn. (Al-Qadr 97:5)

The night of power is peaceful until the break of dawn
This is in last ten nights of Ramadaan
If you hear dogs barking at night, or it is hot or very cold
That is evidence that that night is not the night of power

Allah (swt) said that those who were given the book (Jews and Christians)
Know Muhammad (saw) the way a father can recognise his children
Why? Because the description of Muhammad (saw) was revealed in the Torah and in the Injil

Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognise him (Muhammad or the Ka'bah at Makkah) as they recongise their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it - [i.e. the qualities of Muhammad which are written in the Taurāt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)]. (Al-Baqarah 2:146)

When the Prophet migrated from Makkah to Madinah
A group of Jews saw Muhammad and were convinced it was him
But they decided to be his enemy until they die
Because Muhammad was not a Jew

Ibn Ishaq on the authority of 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad Ibn 'Amr Ibn Hazm narrated: Safiyya bint Huyayy (RA) said: I was my father's favourite and also a favourite with my uncle Yasir. They could never see me with one of their children without picking me up. When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) came to Medina, my father and my uncle went to see him. It was very early in the morning and between dawn and sunrise. They did not return until the sun was setting. They came back worn out and depressed, walking with slow, heavy steps. I smiled to them as I always did, but neither of them took any notice of me because they were so miserable. I head Abu Yasir ask my father, "Is it him?" "Yes, it is." "Can you recognize him? Can you verify it?" "Yes, I can recognize him too well." "What do you feel towards him?" "Enmity, enmity as long as I live." [Seerah Ibn Hisham (2/119)]

The Jews are racist.
They preferred to go to the hellfire rather than to follow someone who was not a Jew

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Indeed Allah has removed from you the blind loyalties of jahiliyyah and the pride for ancestry. Either be a pious believer or a miserable sinner. (All of) you are children of Adam, and Adam is from dust. Let some men cease to take pride in others, who are nothing but burning coal for the HellFire, it will be easier for Allah to handle them than a dung beetle driving his nose into filth.” [Sunan Abu Dawud (4/331) No. 5116, Musnad Ahmad (2/361) No. 8721]

The racist is like a dung beetle
The beetle that rolls the human waste

Narrated Jubair ibn Mut’im: The Messenger of Allah (SAW), said: "He is not one us who calls for `Asabiyah, (nationalism/tribalism) or who fights for `Asabiyah or who dies for `Asabiyah." [Sunan Abu Dawud (Vol. 2, pg. 753) No. 5121]

One day a Jewish boy was on his death bed
The Prophet told him to take shahada when he realised he was going to die
The boy looked at his father and the father told him
To obey Muhammad (saw) and take shahada
The father said this because he knew Muhammad was a real prophet
Because of the description of Muhammad in his holy book

Narrated By Anas: A young Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet and he became sick. So the Prophet went to visit him. He sat near his head and asked him to embrace Islam. The boy looked at his father, who was sitting there; the latter told him to obey Abu-l-Qasim and the boy embraced Islam. The Prophet came out saying: "Praises be to Allah Who saved the boy from the Hell-fire." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 23, Hadith #438]

When the Prophet (saw) migrated to Madina,
He met the Chief of the Jews, Abdullah Ibn Salaam (ra)
Abdullah ibn Salaam ask a lot of questions including
Why does a baby resemble the father sometimes and other times the mother?
The Prophet answered all questions correctly
And he bore witness that the Prophet was a real Prophet.
This is stated in the hadith below

Narrated by Anas...On that 'Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the Apostle of Allah." 'Abdullah bin Salam further said, "O Allah's Apostle! The Jews are liars, and if they should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they would tell a lie about me." The Jews came to Allah's Apostle and 'Abdullah went inside the house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews), "What kind of man is 'Abdullah bin Salam amongst you?" They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst us, and the best amongst us, and the son of the best amongst us." Allah's Apostle said, "What do you think if he embraces Islam (will you do as he does)?" The Jews said, "May Allah save him from it." Then 'Abdullah bin Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they said, "He is the evilest among us, and the son of the evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him. [Bukhari Hadith 4:546]

So many Jews and Christians embraced Islam
Because his description was in their holy books

In ayah 157 Allah (swt) said one of the characteristics of Muhammad (saw) was that
He enjoins the right and forbids the wrong
To enjoin the right and forbid the wrong is a religious duty

Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad SAW) whom they find written with them in the Taurāt (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16), - he commands them for Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islāmic Monotheism and all that Islām has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islām has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibāt [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful…. [7:157]

Therefore all the Prophets in their time enjoined the right and forbid the wrong
So Allah said in 16:36:

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allāh (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Tāghût[] (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Tāghût besides Allāh)." Then of them were some whom Allāh guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth). (An-Nahl 16:36)

Allah (swt) commanded the people here to forbid the wrong and enjoin the right
If you don't enjoin the right and forbid the wrong
When the punishment of Allah comes, it will envelope everybody including the muslims

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allāh is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal 8:25)

On the authority of Abu Umar who said: Allah sent two angels to destroy a township with a natural disaster, but when they got there they found a man praying in the mosque. They went back to Allah and said: 'O Allah we found a man praying in the mosque.' Allah said to the two angels: 'Go back and destroy the township with that man as well because not once did he ever frown when he saw the people indulging in haram.' [Ibnul Qayyim, al-Jawaab al-Kaafi (Vol. 1, pg. 46)]

In regards to the above hadith,
The Prophet (saw) said not once did he frown when he saw the people indulging in haram

Abdullah ibn Masood said when you read the Quran and you see the words
O YOU WHO BELIEVE! you need to pay close attention
Because Allah is ordering you to do something
Or He is commanding you to abstain from something

In the ayah 157, Allah also said Muhammad (saw) releases them from a heavy burden
This was a covenant which was on the neck of Bani Isreal (the Jews)
What is the tafsir of these words?
I consulted Ibn Kathir for the answer
Ibn Kathir said Muhammad (saw) brought a shariah
Which is easier than the previous shariah

Example: In the Shariah of Muhammad (saw) everything in the sea is halal to eat
In the Shariah of Musa (as) you can't eat crab, shrimp, lobster and other shell fish
In the shariah of Musa (as) there is a thing called the sabbath
There is no sabbath in Islam

Abu Hurairah narrated: "A man asked Allah's Messenger 'O Messenger of Allah! We sail the seas, and we only carry a little water with us. If we use it for Wudu then we will go thirsty. So shall we perform Wudu from the (water of the) sea?' Allah's Messenger said: 'Its water is pure, and its dead are lawful.'" [Tirmidhi: (1/1) Hadith 69 & Book 1 Hadith 69]

"Sometime we may carry a little water with us in the ship while at sea; if we use the water we may get thirsty. Can we use the sea water for purification?" The Prophet said: "Its water is pure and its carrion is lawful" (Tirmidhi)

The hadith about making wudu with sea water is another example of
How the shariah of Muhammad makes things easier

Allāh intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you... (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Allāh does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour on you that you may be thankful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:6)

……And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allāh is Most Merciful to you. (An-Nisa 4:29)

Allāh burdens not a person beyond his scope. (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

All these are evidences to prove that the shariah of Muhammad (saw) is easier.

The Prophet (saw) said Allah has forgiven his people for what they have done out of mistake or under duress

On the authority of Ibn Abbas (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Verily Allah has pardoned [or been lenient with] for me my ummah: their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and that which they have been forced to do under duress. A hasan hadith related by Ibn Majah, and al-Bayhaqee and others.

You can even apostate from Islam (with your tongue) if someone holds a gun on you
Yet you are still a muslim because in your heart you have firm imaan
The evidence is 16:106

Whoever disbelieved in Allāh after his belief, except him who is forced thereto and whose heart is at rest with Faith but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is wrath from Allāh, and theirs will be a great torment. (An-Nahl 16:106)

Allah (swt) revealed this ayah for Ammar Ibn Yasser (ra)
To tell the Prophet that what he did was halal

On the authority of Anas bin Malik: The Prophet said, "Facilitate things to people (concerning religious matters), and do not make it hard for them and give them good tidings and do not make them run away (from Islam)." [al-Bukhari (6125) and Muslim (1734)]

One day the sahabah were on a trip and one fell and cracked his head
He had a wet dream and asked if he had to make ghusl
They answered yes and he died after doing so
This is mentioned in the hadith below

Narrated By Jabir: 'We set out on a journey. One of our people was hurt by a stone, that injured his head. He then had a wet dream. He asked his fellow travellers: Do you find concession for me to perform tayammum? They said: We do not find any concession for you while you can use water. He took a bath and died. When we came to the Prophet (SAW), the incident was reported to him. He said: "They killed him, may Allah kill them! Could they not ask when they did not know? The cure of ignorance is inquiry. It was enough for him to perform tayammum and to pour some drops of water or to bind a bandage over the wound (the narrator Musa was doubtful); then he should have wiped over it and washed the rest of his body."' [Sunan Abu Dawood (1/93) No. 336, Sunan al-Daraqutni (1/349) No. 729, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi (1/347) No. 1075]

To prove that the shariah of Muhammad (saw) is the shariah of mercy,
Look at the following hadith

'Aisha (RA) reported: "Whenever the Prophet (SAW) was given a choice between two matters, he would (always) choose the easier as long as it was not sinful to do so; but if it was sinful he was most strict in avoiding it. He never took revenge upon anybody for his own sake; but when Allah's Legal Bindings were outraged, he would take revenge for Allah's sake." [al-Bukhari (3560) and Muslim (2327)]

Unlike the shariah of Musa (as) there is no sabbath in Islam
62:10 is the evidence

Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salāt (prayer) is finished, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allāh (by working, etc.), and remember Allāh much, that you may be successful. (Al-Jumu'ah 62:10)

Leave the masjid after jumuah and go to seek your livelihood
If you want to open your shop 7 days a week, it's up to you
But I don't recommend that because your family has a right over you
You can't be an economic animal

AYAH 158

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allāh - to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Lā ilāha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He); It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allāh and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad SAW) who believes in Allāh and His Words [(this Qur'ān), the Taurāt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allāh's Word: " "Be!" - and he was, i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary),], and follow him so that you may be guided." (Al-A'raf 7:158)

Allah (swt) is saying in the above ayah that the message of Muhammad (saw) is universal
Because of this Allah (swt) asked Muhammad to say:
‘O mankind! Verily I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah’
And He said in another ayah ‘I did not send Muhammad except as a mercy to mankind’

And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) not but as a mercy for the 'Alamīn (mankind, jinns and all that exists). (Al-Anbiya 21:107)

Muhammad (saw) was a messenger to the jinn as well
Muhammad (saw) recited surah 55 to the jinn

Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny? (Ar-Rahman 55:55)

And the jinn were happy when the Prophet recited for them surah Ar-Rahman
We know they were happy because of 72:1-2

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of jinns[] listened (to this Qur'ân). They said: 'Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Qur'ân)!  (Al-Jinn 72:1)
'It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord (Allâh). (Al-Jinn 72:2)

In ayah 158 Allah said it is He who gives life and takes life
Prophet Abraham (as) used this argument against the king Nimrod
When he had a debate with him
Nimrod was in Iraq (Babylon)

Ibrāhim (Abraham) said, "Verily! Allāh causes the sun to rise from the east; then cause it you to rise from the west." So the disbeliever was utterly defeated. And Allāh guides not the people, who are Zālimûn (wrong-doers, etc.). (Al-Baqarah 2:258)

Nimrod claimed that he could give life and take life
And to prove this he set a man who was supposed to be hanged for murder free
And sent for an innocent man from the street and killed him
Nimrod had multiple personality disorder
He was a megalomaniac and a narcissist

The Pharaoh and every American president suffers from this same problem
Many shaikhs and doctors are also narcissist

Ibn Arabi was a goofy sufi
He introduced the concept of wahdatul wujood
wahdatul wujood means union
They think they can become so pious until they become one with Allah
For a man to think he can become one with Allah is an example of a narcissist
Hallaj believed in wahdatul wujood and got his head cut off
He was a shaikh as well

AYAH 159

And of the people of Mûsa (Musa) there is a community who lead (the men) with truth and establish justice therewith (i.e. judge men with truth and justice). (Al-A'raf 7:159)

Among the people of Musa (as) were men who led the people with justice
The people Allah is speaking about are likes of Joshua (as)
Joshua was the traveling companion of Musa when he went to meet al Kidr

The shias like to quote the hadith when the rasul (saw) said to Ali (r.a)
"you are to me like Harun was to Musa"

Narrated By Sad: Allah's Apostle set out for Tabuk. appointing 'Ali as his deputy (in Medina). 'Ali said, "Do you want to leave me with the children and women?" The Prophet said, "Will you not be pleased that you will be to me like Aaron to Musa? But there will be no prophet after me." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 59, Hadith #700]

This is their evidence that Ali (ra) should have been the caliph and not Abu Bakr (ra)
The sahabah used to say in the time of the prophet
The best among them was Abu Bakr, then Umar (ra) then Uthman (ra)

Narrated By Ibn 'Umar: We used to compare the people as to who was better during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle. We used to regard Abu Bakr as the best, then 'Umar, and then 'Uthman. [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 5, Book 57, Hadith #007]

The prophet (saw) heard them saying it and did not stop them from saying it

How do you reconcile my hadith with the hadith the shias like to quote?
We say to them Harun (as) was older than Musa (as)
Harun died before Musa
So if you want to say Ali (ra) is like Harun and the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was like Musa, We cannot accept it because Harun died before Musa
When the Prophet (saw) said you are to me like Harun was to Musa
He was referring to a particular time during the Tabuk expedition
It was a temporary not permanent thing
This was to comfort Ali (ra) for staying behind

AYAH 160

And We divided them into twelve tribes (as distinct) nations. We directed Mûsa (Musa) by inspiration, when his people asked him for water, (saying): "Strike the stone with your stick", and there gushed forth out of it twelve springs: each group knew its own place for water. We shaded them with the clouds and sent down upon them Al-Manna and the quails (saying): "Eat of the good things with which We have provided you." They harmed Us not but they used to harm themselves. (Al-A'raf 7:160)

Jacob (as) had 4 wives and got all pregnant
In total they gave birth to 12 sons
This is how you have the 12 tribes of Bani Israel
He went to stay with his uncle Laban
He met his two daughters, Lia and Rachel when he arrived
Rachel was pretty but Lia was not beautiful
Jacob proposed to Rachel and the uncle agreed and they got married
When night came the uncle sent Lia into the bedroom
Jacob consummated the marriage thinking he was in bed with Rachel
But he was with the ugly sister, the uncle tricked him
When he woke up in the morning he got the shock of his life
He realized he consummated with the ugly sister, not the pretty one
He complained to the uncle and asked why he tricked him
He married Rachel not Lia
The uncle said the older sister has to get married before the younger sister
- this was their culture
This is why Laban (the uncle) tricked him
However, since he was so crazy about Rachel he was offered both sisters
Because in their shariah you can have two sisters at the same time in marriage
Lia gave birth to six kids one after the other
Rachel, with all her beauty, she was barren and sad
So Rachel gave her slave girl to Jabob to marry
The slave girl gave birth to two kids
Then Lia gave her slave girl to Jacob to marry and she gave birth to two kids
Now Jacob has 10 kids
Then a miracle came
Rachel gave birth to Yusuf (as) after many years and then Benjamin
This is how we know the 12 sons of Jacob
That are the fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel
The word Israel means Jacob

These 12 sons became the father of the 12 tribes
And hence Bani Israel are 12 tribes
This was why Allah (swt) caused 12 streams to come from the rock
So each tribe will have their own stream

AYAH 161

And (remember) when it was said to them: "Dwell in this town (Jerusalem) and eat therefrom wherever you wish, and say, '(O Allāh) forgive our sins';
and enter the gate prostrate (bowing with humility). We shall forgive you your wrong-doings. We shall increase (the reward) for the good-doers." (Al-A'raf 7:161)
