(NOTES & AUDIO) Tafsir Surah Al ' Araf - Part 9 - The Story Of Prophet Shuaib (as)

Tafsir Surah Al ' Araf - Part 9 - The Story Of Prophet Shuaib (as)
By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
Monday 30th September 2014

And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers. [7:85] Sahih International

Prophet Idris (as) discovered the scales
He was also the first to write with the pen

The people of Shu'ayb (as) became rich.
They were the first to cheat with the scales
For example, 16 oz make 1 pound
But if you should buy 1 pound of rice, they will only give you 14 oz
This is how they became rich
This is call clandestine activities
These people who cheat with the scales are called Mutafifeen

Allah (swt) spoke about them in 83:1-6
When you measure for them, they demand the measurement in full.
But if they measure for you they cheat you.

Woe to those who give less [than due], Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss. Do they not think that they will be resurrected For a tremendous Day - The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds? [83 1-6]

Allah (swt) here is reminding these people of Judgement Day
You should be just, fair, clean in all trading transactions

Abu Hurayra (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW), said, "Anyone who carries arms against us is not one of us. Anyone who cheats us is not one of us." [Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith #182]

Sometimes you are trading a car and something is faulty in the car
Are you muslim enough to tell the customer?
This is also cheating in trade if you don’t tell him

It was narrated from Rifaa’ah ibn Raafi’ (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The merchants will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as evildoers, apart from those who fear Allah and are honest.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhi (3/507) No. 1210, Sunan al-Darime (2/322) No. 2538, Sunan Ibn Majah (3/277) No. 2146, Ibn Hibban (11/276-277) No. 4910, Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/8) No. 2144; Abu Esa said: It is hasan saheeh. al-Haakim said this hadith has Sahih isnaad but they (Two Shaikhs) did not narrate it; adh-Dhahabi graded this Sahih]

Shuayb (as) invited the people to monotheism
When people dabble is shirk, they have no tauheed
Shirk is the mother of all evil
They also have no taqwa
They will stoop very low - this was the problem of the people of Shuaib

Madian is a piece of land between Egypt and Syria
When Musa (as) ran away from Egypt, he went to Madian
Many scholars say the man he met in Madian and married his daughter was Prophet Shuayb
Musa worked for 10 years, but the mahr was for him to work for 8 years
The extra two years was sadaqah

And do not sit on every path, threatening and averting from the way of Allah those who believe in Him, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. And remember when you were few and He increased you. And see how was the end of the corrupters. [7:86]

When you sit by the roadside, the road has its rights

Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads (ways)." The people said, "There is no way out of it as these are our sitting places where we have talks." The Prophet said, "If you must sit there, then observe the rights of the way." They asked, "What are the rights of the way?" He said, "They are the lowering of your gazes (on seeing what is illegal to look at), refraining from harming people, returning greetings, advocating good and forbidding evil." [al-Bukhari (2465) and Muslim (2121)]

The above hadith mentions the four rights of the road.
The people of Shuayb were highway robbers
They didn't give the road its rights
Their love for wealth made them rob the people on the road

A man came to the Messenger of Allah () and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What shall I do if someone comes to me with the intention of taking away my property?" He replied, "Do not hand over it to him." The man asked, "What shall I do if he fights me?" The Messenger of Allah () said, "Then fight him." "What will be my position in the Hereafter if he has killed me?" The Messenger of Allah () replied, "In that case you are a martyr." The man asked: "What if I killed him?" The Messenger of Allah () replied, “He will be in the Hell- fire.”  Muslim, Book 12, Hadith 1357

Did you know that Allah (swt) says you should kill the highway robber?
You should be kind to the wayfarer, but the people of Shuayb didn’t do this
They robbed the people on the road

Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,[5:33]

Allah (swt) says in the above ayah that the arm robber should be crucified
The Qadi in the court house needs to make ijtihad
According to shariah law, if you steal, your hand is cut off
But that is for a petty thief

[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah . And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.[5:38]

The highway robber is not a petty thief, because he robs with a weapon
This is why this person is killed
The highway robber is very dangerous

And if there should be a group among you who has believed in that with which I have been sent and a group that has not believed, then be patient until Allah judges between us. And He is the best of judges." [7:87]

The judgement of Allah (swt) that Prophet Shuayb is talking about is
Allah's chastisement against those who reject faith
Because of Allah's perfect judgement,
He will never punish the wayward until He sends a messenger to warn them

.. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.[17:15]

Allah gives you ample opportunity to believe
When Prophet Shuayb said Allah is the best of judges
He is referring to Allah's hakimiyyah

Is not Allah the most just of judges?[95:8]

Human judges allow tribalism, nationalism, racism to influence their judgement
The human judges allow diseases of the heart to influence their judgement
But Allah is the best of judges because
He has no disease of the heart to interfere in His judgement
Sometimes the class system interferes in peoples’ judgement

It was narrated that 'Aishah said:"A woman of Quraish, from banu Makhzum, stole, and she was brought to the Prophet. They said: 'Who will speak to him concerning her?' They said: 'Usamah bin Zaid.' So he came to the Prophet and spoke to him. But he rebuked him, and he said; 'Among the Children of Israel, if a noble person stole, they would let him go. But if a low-class person stole, they would cut off his hand. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if Fatimah bint Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.""
Sunan an-Nasa'i, Vol. 5, Book 46, Hadith 4904

The above hadith proves that judges can be swayed by a person’s status, unlike Allah
Allah doesn't care about who is rich, poor, black or white
Allah is the best of judges

The chiefs of those who were arrogant among his people said: "We shall certainly drive you out, O Shu'aib, and those who have believed with you from our town, or else you (all) shall return to our religion." He said: "Even though we hate it! (Al-A'raf 7:88)

The ayah is telling you that kuffaar are dictators

But the answer of his people was only that they said, "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure." [7:82]

The word "his' here is Prophet Lut (as)
By them saying that the married people are pure,
Is proof that to live your life as a gay is impure
The gay lifestyle is a dirty lifestyle
This story of Lut (as) was brought to you to prove that history repeats itself
The story of Lut came before the story of Shuayb

The lesson you need to learn here is that Kuffaar are Dictators
The kuffaar brought missiles into Iraq to make the people accept democracy
The ayah "You to your way..." in surah Kafiroon is abrogated

To you be your religion, and to me my religion (Islāmic Monotheism)." (Al-Kafirun 109:6)

The new ruling is "Fight them until there is no more fitna" 8:39

And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah . And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do. [8:39]

Also, 9:5 (the verse of the sword) also abrogated "You to your way and me to my way"

And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [9:5]

The chiefs who waxed proud among his people said, "Indeed we will definitely drive you out, O Shuaayb, and the ones who have believed with you, from our town, or (else) you indeed will definitely go back to our creed." Said he, "Even if we hate . [7:88]

Do you realise that for all the Prophets that were sent,
Allah (swt) always mentioned the Chiefs of the City?
They are always the ones who turn the people away from the message

And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy - devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent. [6:112]
And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive [it] not. [6:123]

The chiefs of the city were the ones who turned the people away from the Prophets

The Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say, "How we wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.", And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way., Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse." [33:66-68]

Here you'll see that the people will blame their chiefs on Judgement Day

"We should have invented a lie against Allah if we returned to your religion, after Allah has rescued us from it. And it is not for us to return to it unless Allah, our Lord, should will. Our Lord comprehends all things in His Knowledge. In Allah (Alone) we put our trust. Our Lord! Judge between us and our people in truth, for You are the Best of those who give judgment." (Al-A'raf 7:89)

When you taste the sweetness of imaan
You will never want to return kufr after that

Anas bin Malik (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said, "There are three qualities whoever has them, will taste the sweetness of Iman (faith): To love Allah and His Messenger (SAW) more than anyone else; to love a slave (of Allah) only for (the sake of) Allah; and to abhor returning to infidelity after Allah has saved him from it as he would abhor to be thrown into the fire (of Hell)." [al-Bukhari (21) and Muslim (43)]
