(Notes & Audio) Tafsir Surah Al ‘Araf - Part 23 - Listen To The Quran When It Is Recited

Tafsir Surah Al ‘Araf - Part 23 - Listen To The Quran When It Is Recited
By Shaikh Abdullah Faisal
Saturday 8th November 2014

This will be the last segment of Surah Al Araf insha'Allah

AYAH 201

Verily, those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2), when an evil thought comes to them from Shaitan (Satan), they remember (Allah), and (indeed) they then see (aright). (Al-A'raf 7:201)

What is Taqwa?
Taqwa is to place between yourself and Allah's punishment a barrier
By doing what is fard and abstaining from what is haram

Taqwa is from the root word ‘Waqqa’ which means ‘to protect’
So the person of Taqwa is protected from the plot of shaytan
Allah (swt) is saying that dhikr is your protection in the above Ayah
He (swt) says that when you do dhikr you are protected from the shaytan’s whisper
The people remember Allah when they hear the whisper of shaytan by saying
aoothu billahi mina shaytanir rajim

"Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, (An-Nas 114:5)
"Of jinns and men." (An-Nas 114:6)

Allah warns you in the above ayah of shaytan's whispers
Allah said to remember Him so that you will see things right
Because the taqwa gives you baseerah
Baseerah means to see things with the spiritual eye
You will see good as good and the evil as evil
Allah also told you that the taqwa will give you the farqan (intuition)

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty. (Al-Anfal 8:29)

Furqan means to judge between the right and the wrong
You are protected with your taqwa

Say (O Muhammad SAW) : "This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allah i.e to the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge.
And Glorified and Exalted be Allah (above all that they associate as partners with Him). And I am not of the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah; those who worship others along with Allah or set up rivals or partners to Allah)." (Yusuf 12:108)

AYAH 202

But (as for) their brothers (the devils) they (i.e. the devils) plunge them deeper into error, and they never stop short. (Al-A'raf 7:202)

The above Ayah means their brothers are of the devils
So there is a brotherhood between the devils and the human beings
And they inspire each other to do evil

Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaitan (Devil Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Al-Isra 17:27)

The above Ayah is the hujjah to prove the brotherhood of the devil and humans
They worship each other and offer sacrifices to each other
When Allah said that the jinn do not stop short of luring (tempting) them to do haram
The Ayah means that the temptation of shaitan is 24 hours a day

The shaitan knows who is making dhikr
If he sees a person making dhikr he leaves him alone
He will find someone else who is not making dhikr
This person is a hard nut to crack (says the shaitan about the person making dhikr)

Further proof of shaitan inspiring man:

See you not that We have sent the Shayatin (devils) against the disbelievers to push them to do evil. (Maryam 19:83)

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. (Tafseer Qurtubi, Vol.7, Page 67) (Al-An'am 6:112)

'And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the jinns, but they (jinns) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief. (Al-Jinn 72:6)

AYAH 203

And if you do not bring them a miracle [according to their (i.e. Quraish-pagans') proposal], they say: "Why have you not brought it?" Say: "I but follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This (the Qur'an) is nothing but evidences from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe." (Al-A'raf 7:203)

The pagans of Quraysh complained of the fact
There are no rivers which makes their life hard
They asked the Prophet (saw) for a miracle
And said they would believe if it happens
The people of Saleh (as) asked for a camel and killed it when they received it
Allah split the moon in front of their eyes and they did not believe

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad SAW to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). (Al-Qamar 54:1)
And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: "This is continuous magic." (Al-Qamar 54:2)

The biggest miracle of the rasul (saw) is the Holy Quran
And they were asking for another miracle
Because it was revealed to an unlettered Prophet with no mistakes
And all the predictions of the Quran will come to pass
It agrees with science
It has all topics and subjects
It is comprehensive

AYAH 204

So, when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Surat Al-Fatiha), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.9, Pages 162-4] (Al-A'raf 7:204)

The above Ayah is evidence that to listen to the Quran is an act of ibada
Why? Because you obtain Allah's mercy when you listen to the Quran
It is haram to play the Quran on CD or YouTube etc
While you are having a conversation in the background
Because Allah (swt) said "when the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively..."
So for you to have a conversation when the Quran is being recited,
You are disrespecting Allah (swt)

Because of this Ayah (7:204) the scholars agree that
You cannot have the Quran as a ringtone
Why? Because you might be in the company of others,
And when your phone rings everyone has to stop their conversation
To listen to your ringtone because your ringtone is the Quran
You are imposing on other people, and that is oppressing the people
That is why it is haram

When you pray salah behind the imam and he is reciting loud,
You are supposed to listen to his recitation attentively
Why? To listen to the Quran is an act of ibada

You don't get any barakah by listening to music
Music makes your heart hard
Music draws shaitan to your house
Quran drives shaitan away from the house
The scholars differ as to whether music is haram or halal
Only Ibn Hazm says music is halal
Even though Ibn Hazm say music is halal, you are not allowed to insult Him

AYAH 205

And remember your Lord by your tongue and within yourself, humbly and with fear without loudness in words in the mornings, and in the afternoons and be not of those who are neglectful. (Al-A'raf 7:205)

Allah has commanded you here to make dhikr
People who forget Allah forget themselves
Meaning they forget that they are Muslims
Sometimes they are in nightclubs

And be not like those who forgot Allah (i.e. became disobedient to Allah) and He caused them to forget their ownselves, (let them to forget to do righteous deeds). Those are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (Al-Hashr 59:19)

They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (At-Tawbah 9:67)

Allah (swt) does not forget
Therefore, the tafsir is ‘they ignore Allah so Allah ignores them’

Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. (Ra'd 13:28)

Allah (swt) is telling you with the dhikr of Allah the heart will find contentment
But the kaafir says in pill we trust
They want you to take Prozac which make you suicidal; it is a gimmick

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'an nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." (Ta-Ha 20:124)
He will say:"O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)." (Ta-Ha 20:125)
(Allah) will say: "Like this, Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allah's Mercy)." (Ta-Ha 20:126)

Allah spoke about the people who do dhikr:

Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding. (Aali Imran 3:190)

Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying) : "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire. (Aali Imran 3:191)

Every creation of Allah (swt) is for a purpose
Even the shaitan being here with us is for a purpose
Have you been to the gym? The heavier the weights, the stronger you become
Therefore, the more you resist the shaitan, the stronger your imaan will become

Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (SAW) said, “The world, with all that it contains, is accursed except for dhikr (the remembrance of Allah) that which pleases Allah; and the religious scholars and seekers of knowledge.' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/561) 2322 and Sunan Ibn Majah (5/231) 4112, (Abu Eesa al-Tirmidhi said: this hadeeth is hasan ghareeb)]

Abu Sa'eed al Khudri (ra) narrates from the Prophet (Peace be upon him) who said: Do Dhikr so much that people start calling you Majnoon (mad) [Tafsir ul Qurtubi, Volume No. 14, Page No. 197]

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (ra) who said that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: Remember Allah in abundance to the extent that Munafiqeen say that you are showing off [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Volume No. 6, Page No. 384]

Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said, "The similitude of one who remembers his Rubb and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead." [al-Bukhari (6407) and Muslim (779)]

Allah (swt) has commanded you to do dhikr, because
He does not want you to be spiritually dead
And because He does not want you to become a victim of shaitan’s web
The Prophet (saw) told Omar (ra) that when the shaitan sees him
He crosses over to the other side of the road

Sa'd b. Waqqas reported that Umar sought permission from Allah's Messenger (SAW) to visit him when some women of the Quraish were busy in talking with him and raising their voices above his voice. When 'Umar sought permission they stood up and went hurriedly behind the curtain. Allah's Messenger (SAW) gave him permission smilingly. Thereupon 'Umar said: Allah's Messenger, may Allah keep you happy all your life. Then Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: I wonder at these women who were with me and no sooner did they hear your voice, they immediately went behind the curtain. Thereupon 'Umar said: Allah's Messenger, you have more right that they should fear you. Then Umar (addressing the women) said: O ye enemies of yourselves, do you fear me and fear not the Messenger of Allah (SAW)? They said: Yes, you are harsh and strict as compared to the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if Satan would encounter you in the way he would certainly take a different way from that of yours. [Sahih Muslim, Book 31, Hadith #5899]

AYAH 206

Surely, those who are with your Lord (angels) are never too proud to perform acts of worship to Him, but they glorify His Praise and prostrate before Him. (Al-A'raf 7:206)

Did you know that even the angels testify to the shahada?
The kuffar are so proud that some of them do not testify to the shahada

Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. La ilah illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (Aali Imran 3:18)

If Allah testify and the angels testify, who are you that you cannot testify?

There is a house called Bait ma'moor
Everyday angels go there to make hajj
This house is directly above our kabbah

By the Mount; (At-Tur 52:1)
And by the Book Inscribed. (At-Tur 52:2)
In parchment unrolled. (At-Tur 52:3)
And by the Bait-ul-Ma'mur (the house over the heavens parable to the Ka'bah at Makkah, continuously visited by the angels); (At-Tur 52:4)

70,000 angels go to this kaaba everyday
They are not proud because they do not have diseases of the heart like man and jinn

This is Al Bait-ul-Ma'mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and when they leave they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).' Then I was shown Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (i.e. a tree in the seventh heaven) Bukhari: (3207) Bukhari: (4/54) Hadith 429)
