The Prophet (saw) was sitting with his companions and told them to stay away from the 7 major sins.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." The people enquire, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What are they? "He said, "To join others in worship along with Allah, to practice sorcery, to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, (according to Islamic law), to eat up Riba (usury), to eat up an orphan's wealth, to give back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and to accuse, chaste women, who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.  BUKHARI Vol. 4, Book 51, Hadith 28

The 7 worst sins are shirk, magic, murder, riba, to rob the orphan, slander pious believing Muslim women, and to run away from the battlefield

- Shirk means associate partners with Allah

There are two types of shirk: major and minor

- major - makes you an infidel and nullifies all of your pious deeds
- minor - makes you a sinner and nullifies the deed that accompanies it

- giving away in charity to show off is an example of minor shirk. This shirk nullifies only the deed that accompanies it and no other deed.
- because major shirk nullifies all of our pious deeds, Allah warned the Prophet (saw) in the follow Ayah

And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad SAW), as it was to those (Allah's Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers." (Az-Zumar 39:65)

- major shirk causes you to abide in the hell-fire forever
- minor shirk will allow you to receive the intercession by Muhammad
- because major shirk will put you in hell forever, you cannot beg Allah to forgive your dead kaafir relatives

It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah's Forgiveness for the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief). (At-Tawbah 9:113)

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. (An-Nisa 4:48)

- Allah will forgive major shirk if you make tawbah before you die
- the above Ayah is about people who died as mushrikeen because they did not make tawbah before they died.

1.  Shirk of Love

- when you love something more than you love Allah
- some people dont close their shops to pray salatul Jumuah
- some people miss Asr salah due to a football game
- about this shirk, Allah says:

And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Baqarah 2:165)

2. Shirk of Fear

- when you fear someone more than you fear Allah
- this shirk causes people to sell-out or even become apostates from Islam

Therefore fear not men but fear Me (O Jews) and sell not My Verses for a miserable price. And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the Kafirun (i.e. disbelievers - of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allah's Laws). (Al-Ma'idah 5:44)

3. Shirk of Swearing by Other Than Allah

Ibn 'Umar (RA) said: I heard a man saying: "No, by the Ka'bah." I admonished him: 'Do not swear by any thing besides Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying, "He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk."' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/110) No. 1535, Musnad Ahmad (2/125) No. 6072, Sunan Abu Dawud (3/223) No. 3251, Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/330) No. 7814]

- to say "I swear by the kaaba" is haram. Say instead "I swear by the Lord of the kaaba".

4. Shirk of Slaughtering

- to kill an animal in the name of a false deity
- the only slaughter allowed is the slaughtering in the name of Allah

Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allah's Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allah). And certainly, the Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind) to dispute with you, and if you obey them [by making AlMaytatah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikun (polytheists) [because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that which Allah has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allah is polytheism]. (Al-An'am 6:121)

- pagans use to eat meat that died by itself [dead meat]
- this is haram as mentioned by Allah in the above Ayah
- because of the Ayah [above] there is ijma among the scholars that you will become a kaafir if you eat the animal in which the name of a false deity was called over the animal, and you knew about it
- Yes, you can eat the meat of the people of the book [Jews and Christians]

5. Shirk of Going to Fortune-tellers

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (SAW), said “Whoever comes to a fortune-teller and believes him has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (SAW)”. [Musnad Ahmad (Vol. 2, pg. 429) No. 9532 and Mustadrak al-Hakim (Vol. 1, pg. 49) No. 15]

- if you believe the fortune teller has the same knowledge of Allah in regards to the unseen, you are associating partners with Allah
- that makes you a kaafir
- only Allah has the knowledge of the unseen

6. Shirk of Tawakkul

- to put your trust in other than Allah

7. Shirk of Showing Off

- to do good by showing off

Prophet (pbuh) said: “The thing I fear for you most is ash-Shirk al-Asghar (minor shirk). The Companions asked O’ Messenger of Allah, what is minor shirk? He replied, ‘ar-Riya’ (showing off), for verily Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection when people are receiving their rewards, ‘Go to those for whom you were showing off in the material world and see if you can find any reward from them.” (Reported by al-Imaam Ahmad, at-Tabaraani, and al-Bayhaqee)

Whoever seeks knowledge to argue with the scholars, or to show off with the ignorant people, and attracts the faces of the people towards him, Allah would enter him into the Hellfire." [Hasan - Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]

8. Shirk of Describing Allah with Human Qualities

- Christians do this
- They said Allah rested on the 7th day... [below]

Exodus 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
  • they also say Allah made tawbah for creating man... [below]
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. (Genesis 6:6) King James Version

- to accuse Allah of repenting is blasphemy because only sinners repent

9. Shirk of Describing a Man with Godly Qualities

- ex: Christians believe Jesus is God
- if you die on this belief, you will be in hell forever
- the Shia believe their imams have knowledge of the unseen

SHIA HUJJAH: The Imams have knowledge of the past and future; and nothing is hidden from them. ( Al-Kafi vol.1 p.260 )

- they claim their imams know when they are going to die
- you have to attack the Shia with tawheed
- you can knock them out with tawheed
- their weakness is tawheed
- they claim Ali was the first imam, second Hassan and then Hussain
- ask them how did Hassan die?
- they will tell you he was poisoned by his enemies
- but their Imams have knowledge of the unseen; so did Hassan commit suicide by eating poison deliberately?
- this is how you check-mate a Shia in a debate
- then you bring 7:188

Say (O Muhammad SAW) : "I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe." (Al-A'raf 7:188)

- even the Prophet (saw) was commanded by Allah to tell the people he does not have any knowledge of the unseen in the above Ayah

10. Shirk of Dua

- making dua to someone other than Allah
- Christians, Shia and Sufi do this
- Christians pray to Jesus
- Shia pray to their imams
- Sufi pray to their saints who are in the grave
- Christians say "Jesus is Lord" and pray to Jesus
- Shia say Ya Ali, Ya Hassan, Ya Hussain,… Maddad [Help]
- Allah refuted them
- they claim you have to see a receptionist before you see the dentist
- likewise, you have to speak to someone before talking to Allah
- but a dentist can't meet everyone so he needs a receptionist
- but Allah can listen to the supplication of 1 million people at the same time
- and who gave you the right to compare Allah to a dentist?
- who told you, you can compare the Creator to His Creation
- Allah refuted you in the Ayah below:

Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say) : "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah." Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever. (Az-Zumar 39:3)

when we pray, we recite:

You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). (Al-Fatihah 1:5)

- A Muslim who believes in the above Ayah cannot be a grave worshipper
- Allah called the grave worshippers liars and kaafirs because they dont really believe in Surah Fatiha verse 5
- can the dead man hear? Yes
- and there is life in the grave
- here is punishment in the grave
- so how can you doubt that there is life there
- Ali said he use to have doubts about the punishment in the grave until Allah revealed Surah 102

The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you, Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die). Nay! You shall come to know! Again, Nay! You shall come to know! Nay! If you knew with a sure knowledge (the end result of piling up, you would not have occupied yourselves in worldly things) (At-Takathur 102)

- The Prophet (saw) spoke to dead people at the battle of Badr after killing them

Narrated By Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet looked at the people of the well (the well in which the bodies of the pagans killed in the Battle of Badr were thrown) and said, "Have you found true what your Lord promised you?" Somebody said to him, "You are addressing dead people." He replied, "You do not hear better than they but they cannot reply."
[al-Bukhari (1370) and Muslim (2874)]

- as for the verse below where Allah said the dead people cannot hear you
- what Allah meant is He blocks them from hearing when people make dua to them
- because to make dua to the dead, is major shirk

If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad SAW) like Him Who is the AllKnower (of each and everything)[]. (Fatir 35:14)

dead can hear but when you pray to them and make dua,
- Allah prevents them from hearing the dua because praying to them is major shirk
- we know this because Allah has made takfir on the grave worshippers in the Ayah below

(Az-Zumar 39:3)

there are two types of kufr: major and minor
- only major kufr ejects you outside the fold of Islam
- likewise, there are two types of shirk: major and minor
- and only major shirk ejects a person outside the fold of Islam
- in the Ayah below, Allah makes takfir on Jews, Christians and Pagans
- because they dabble in major shirk
- Allah makes takfir on them even before Islam came to them
- Allah makes takfir on them because we cannot call a muskrik a Muslim

Those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and among Al-Mushrikun, were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence. (Al-Baiyinah 98:1)

11. Shirk of Worship

- Christians do this, Allah made takfir on them in the Ayah below

Surely, they have disbelieved who say: "Allah is the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary)." Surely, they are disbelievers who said: "Allah is the third of three deities (in a Trinity)." But there is no ilah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilah (God -Allah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them. (Al-Ma'idah 5:72-73)

12. To believe Allah appeared on earth in the form of a human being

- Christian, Nation of Islam believe this
- if Jesus is God, why did he rebuke a man for calling him good in the verse below

And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. (Matthew 19:17) King James Version

- if Jesus is God, why did he tell the people he doesn’t know when is Judgement Day
- only God Himself knows when is Judgement Day

But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (Matthew 24:36) King James Version

- if Jesus is God, why did he say I am ascending to my God and your God?

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. (John 20:17) King James Version

13. The Shirk of Legislation

- the shirk of legislation is to exchange the Shariah for man-made laws
- for example, to say to chop off the hand of a thief is wrong and it is better to put him in jail instead
- whosoever does this is legislating
- and this is major shirk
- in this regard Allah said:

And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers. (Al-Ma'idah 5:44) [Sahih International]

14. Shirk of Obedience

- to obey a man and disobey Allah
- Allah spoke about the shirk of obedience in the Ayah below

15. Shirk of Believing in the Stars

- some people believe rain came from the stars and not Allah
- these people are mushrikeen
- the Hadith below explains further

On the authority of Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhaniyy (RA), who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) led the morning prayer for us at al-Hudaybiyah following rainfall during the night. When the Prophet (SAW) finished, he faced the people and said to them: "Do you know what your Lord has said?" They said: "Allah and his Messenger know best." He said: "'This morning one of my servants became a believer in Me and one a disbeliever. As for him who said: 'We have been given rain by virtue of Allah and His mercy,' that one is a believer in Me, a disbeliever in the stars (2); and as for him who said: 'We have been given rain by such-and-such a star,' that one is a disbeliever in Me, a believer in the stars.'" (2) The pre-Islamic Arabs believed that rain was brought about by the movement of stars. This Hadith draws attention to the fact that whatever be the direct cause of such natural phenomena as rain, it is Allah the Almighty who is the Disposer of all things. [Bukhari (also by Malik and an-Nasa'i).]

16. Shirk of Wearing Amulets

‘Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk.” [Musnad Ahmad (4/156) No. 17458 and Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/243) No. 7513]

- this is minor shirk [not major]
- if you want to be protected by the Quran, you have to recite it, not wear it

17. Shirk of Believing in Omens

- some people think the number 13 is bad luck
- every culture has their omens
- some people think a mongoose running across the road is bad luck (or a black cat)
- others think if a black bird should pitch in a tree by their home, they will have a bad day
- or a one eyed man being a first customer is a sign of a bad day
- the Prophet (saw) pronounced omens as shirk in the Hadith below

Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Tiyarah (belief in evil omens) is shirk..." [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/160) No. 1614, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/17) No. 3910, Musnad Ahmad (1/440) No. 4194, Sunan Ibn Majah (4/560) No. 3538]

- to subdue the Jinn to do act for you that appears supernatural to the human eye
- Abu Hanifa claimed magic is a fantasy, not a reality
- Malik, Shafi and Ahmad say magic is real
- how can you tell if someone is dabbling is black magic?
- Imam Shafi said you can't kill a man who is doing tricks - you can only kill him if he is doing magic
- the Qadi in the IS courthouse has to give a warrant to search his house
- if vodo dolls [dolls made of clay with pins pushed in it], goat head, other tools used by the magicians are found in his house, he has to be killed
- the Prophet (saw) commanded us to kill magicians in the Hadith below

Jundub (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The hadd (prescribed punishment) for the practitioner of magic is a blow with the sword (i.e., execution)" [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/60) No. 1460, Sunan al-Daraqutni (4/120) No. 3204, Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/401) No. 8073, al-Sunan al-Kabir al-Bayhaqi (8/234) No. 16500, al-Mu'jam al-Kabir al-Tabarani (2/161) No. 1665]

- when Umar became Caliph, he wrote a letter to all of the Muslim Governors commanding them to find all the magicians and kill them, one by one
- some people believe magic began in the time of Prophet Sulaiman
- but the Islamic scholars disagree with this view
- Prophet Musa lived approximately 1000 years before Prophet Sulaiman
- and the Pharaoh brought 70 magicians to challenge Prophet Musa
- saying if the magicians beat Prophet Musa, he would give them a raise in salary
- they were the most learned magicians in Egypt
- but they lost and embraced Islam
- they were crucified after they embraced Islam
- although Prophet Sulaiman was not a kaafir,
- magicians are kaafirs because of what Allah says in the following Ayah
They followed what the Shayatin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman (Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us)." And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's Leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their ownselves, if they but knew. (Al-Baqarah 2:102)

- because of the above Ayah, there is ijma among the scholars of Islam that every single magician is a kaafir
- millions of Muslims are kuffar and dont even realize it because they dabble in black magic
- the Muslims need to study Nuwaqid al Islam [the nullifiers of Islam]

- a murderer is a person who kills a believer unjustly
- a murderer is not a kaafir, but a fasiq [sinner]
- because when the believers fight each other, Allah calls them believers
- however, a murderer who believes murder is halal is a kaafir
- this is the plight of the apostate leaders in the Ummah today
- they think it is halal to kill innocent Muslims
- they even take sides with the crusaders to kill innocent Muslims
- Allah promised the murderer the hell-fire in the Ayah below

And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the Wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him. (An-Nisa 4:93

the kawarij use this to say [incorrectly] that a murderer is a kaafir
- however, the only murderer who is a kaafir is the one who makes murder halal

And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them both, but if one of them rebels against the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it complies with the Command of Allah; then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allah loves those who are equitable. (Al-Hujurat 49:9)

- when Ali and Muawiya fought, nobody called them kaafirs
- it's called the fitna of Ali and Muawiya
- Allah refers to the Muslims who fight each other as believers in the above Ayah

- Riba is to charge someone interest
- when we take riba, we are guilty of making war on Allah and His Rasool
- the Ayah below explains further

And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums). (Al-Baqarah 2:279)

- taking riba doesn't make you a kaafir
- neither does murder
- but magic and shirk makes you a kaafir

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: "Riba has seventy segments, the least serious being equivalent to a man committing adultery with his own mother." [Sunan Ibn Majah (3/337) No. 2274 and Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/43) No. 2259]

- to rob the orphan is a major sin
- and Allah promised the Hell-fire to those who rob the orphan

Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing Fire! (An-Nisa 4:10)

dont marry a girl who is a orphan if you know you are weak in iman
- because an orphan has no one to look out for their interest
- so a person with weak iman will oppress the orphan
- Al Khidr put the wall back straight to protect the wealth of the orphan
- because people who are ungodly like to rob the orphans
- the Prophet (saw) said the best home is the home where the orphan is properly treated

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill treated. I and the guardian of the orphan will be in the Garden like that," indicating his two fingers.  [al-Adab al-Mufrad al-Bukhari No. 137]

- Allah said in the ayah below, the uphill road is to look after an orphan who is close to you
- and to feed poor people

But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. And what will make you know the path that is steep? (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.). Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), To an orphan near of kin. Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. (Al-Balad 90:11-16)

- the miskin is worst than the faqeer
- the faqeer lives from hand to mouth
- he works to pay bills only and has no savings
- the miskin has to go and search for food
- or beg money from others to buy food
- he searches for food from the garbage sometimes at Burger King, McDonald's, Popeye's, KFC...

- you can run away if you are outnumbered
- you can run away if the enemy has superior weapons
- and you have no weapons to counteract their weapons
- but you have to return at a later date to launch a gorilla warfare against the enemy in a war of attrition
- by doing so, you turn the battlefield into a quagmire
- and bleed the infidels slowly [but surely].

- Aisha suffered this
- hypocrites of Madina slandered her
- because one of the many characteristics of the hypocrites is that they like to slander pious Muslims
- they slander pious Muslims because they envy you for your deen and your izzah
- Aisha fainted when she heard about the slander
- her mom, Umm Ruman, kept the slander away from her
- Aisha was upset with her mom for not telling her about the slander
- the tongue and private parts are very dangerous
- and because of that the Prophet (saw) warned us about these two organs of our body in the Hadith below

Narrated By Sahl bin Sa'd: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him." [Sahih Bukhari (8/100) No. 6474]

It is reported from Hudhaifa that news reached him (the Holy Prophet) that a certain man carried tales. Upon this Hudhaifa remarked: I heard Allah's Messenger (SAW) saying: "The tale-bearer shall not enter Paradise." [al-Bukhari (6056) and Muslim (189)]

- he wont enter on the first occasion, he will be punished in hell-fire b4 he is allowed to go to paradise

Q: Shaikh, is wearing The  name of Allah on a necklace considered shirk ?
  • Wearing a chain with Allah’s name is not haram
  • because the person whose wearing the chain, wears it because he loves Allah
  • we are allowed to enter the toilet with a chain with Allah’s name
  • as for the Hadith that says the Prophet (saw) took off his ring that had Allah’s name on it before he entered the toilet, is a weak Hadith
  • so we are not allowed to apply it
  • as for hanging pictures with surahs or verses of the Holy Quran in our house
  • this is permissible because those who hang these Quranic verses, do so out of love for the Quran

Q: if a person is afraid of black dogs is this considered an omen?
  • to be afraid of a black dog is not considered believing in omen
  • because the Prophet (saw) said the black dog is the shaitan

It was reported from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Samit that Abu Dharr said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘If any one of you stands up to pray, then he has a sutrah [an item placed in front of a praying person as a “screen”] if he has something the height of the back of a saddle in front of him. If he does not have something the height of the back of a saddle in front of him, then his prayer is invalidated if a donkey or a woman or a black dog passes in front of him.’” I [‘Abdullah] asked, “O Abu Dharr, what is the difference between a black dog and a red or yellow dog?” He said, “O son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah (SAW) the same question, and he said, ‘The black dog is a shaytan (devil).’” [Sahih Muslim (1/365) No. 510, Sunan Abu Dawud (1/187) No. 702, Sunan al-Nasa'i (2/63) No. 750, Sunan Tirmidhi (2/161) No. 338, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/102) No. 952, Musnad Ah
